    I'll probably take a look, as I never gave Asheron's call a try cause at that time period I had my head up Diablo II's ass.

    At any rate Most of my first time ranting here on this  site wasn't so much about Darkfall, but the idea of Darkfall could be, and even if this project falls thorough another one with the same ideals could emerge. And that would be great.

    Every arguement seems to devolve into blind faith in one extreme or the other: Darkfall will release this year in an almost perfect state and blow the minds of players, or its some elaborate scam, extremely long con, that will either release bug ridden or never release at all.  Now, the only problem is, there is really no concrete evidence for either side, it's just personal feelings.  From what they've released concerning their game, the only opinion I can really conclude it that the game is still in development, and not near as ready for release as they state, unless they want to do a "guriella" release, which pretty much goes against how every games release cycle goes.

    There are very good reasons why they are not showing much of the game, and I believe that is because its not as "ready" as they say it is, not because they'd rather be "working on the title then showing it off, even though they state it's just about ready for release this year".  They know how long they have been in development, and I'm sure realize that if they say, "this feature, and/or that feature needs more work and we're not ready to speculate when it will be ready for launch" they will lose more of their fan base.  So, they don't release any concrete information on the current state of their client, and make vauge promises that if they break, its ok, because they never said anything "officially".

    When this game is close to being ready, you will know it, because like just about every other developer that wants to make a profit off their product, they will be showcasing it to the public, have set schedules for any types of Beta's, etc.  If they only do a small "internal" beta, then release, I believe they will shoot themselves in the foot pertaining to bugs/server stress/ etc, epecially seeing as they are promissing large scale PvP, town seiging etc, you can't internally test all those "massive" systems with 15-20 testers and AI.  Of course, no one knows the exact numbers of people currently testing it, but I'm keeping the number small (imo) due to the fact it is a small independant upstart company.  Too many things do not add up, IMO, to a release anytime before '09.  I really hope everything turns out great for Darkfall, I would buy it in a second, but with the history of the development, believing what they are telling you at face value is very niave.  You should believe what you can see/play/touch, not what someone, who wants your money of course, tells you is there but cannot show you.

    You make a lot of very good points! I am for one totally agreeing with you when you say that there is no concrete evidence either way that says DF will go or will not go live. I'm not saying it will for a fact but I certainly HOPE it does, or that some game that shares this array of features, no matter the name or the maker, does arrive.

    Interesting thing though with the "guerilla" tactic though. Isn't that what Blizzard just did with news of Diablo III? Well it's not a guerilla launch necessarily but they did keep it under wraps instead of super hyping it. Maybe that's not such a bad tactic to use. Only more time will tell, suppose.

    The majority of people on the official Darkfall boards are not as blind and stupid as one might think. Sure there's a few there that just belong in a cage somewhere to be experimented on but for the most part if they do not really DELIVER with this video there's going to be a huge backlash..

Obviously you were all born into this video technology revolution where game developers got the idea that spending years worth of time developing a game to look neat in screen shots but play like total shit was an effective marketing approach. GRAPHICS DO NOT MAKE A GAME FUN OR SUCCESSFUL. Sure, good graphics can make it interesting but features, smoothness, and playability > shiny special effects and having to spend $500 to upgrade your pc. I have a decent rig but I do not want to HAVE to friggin triple-SLI GeForce 9 series video cards just to get 40+ frames in a game. Thats stupid and not worth buying a game that plays like utter shit even with superior hardware a la' AoC.
    There's all this talk here about how WoW's graphics are dated and blah blah blah. GOOD. If they don't modernize the graphics engine and their customer's computers can eat it up in frame rate and internet latency that means their first customers DON'T NEED to replace their system to enjoy it, which means it stays successful. You guys can all talk shit about WoW saying it sucks or the grafix and cartoony shit is lame but Blizzard's employees are rofling at you all on their way to the bank with hundreds of millions of dollars in subscriber fees. If the game sucked it wouldn't be such a popular megahit for 4+ years running. People STILL play a little something you might of heard of called "Super Mario Brothers" on a little system you might know about called a Nintendo, around what.. 23-24 years later? 8 bit graphics wasn't what kept SMB alive.. playability and FUN did.
    Darkfall may very well be vapourware. It IS a massive project, a groundbreaking and revolutionary project that will change the mmo industry for years to come IF it is successfully launched. It might currently be in the hands of people unable to handle the financial stress and labor stress or such a magnificent idea. But that doesn't mean it can't change hands to a more suitable vendor. It's like they took the greats from the past.. looks like a lot of UO, a bit of Morrowind/Oblivion, and crammed it into a goal with real potential to rock our faces. Who cares about what brand name its going to run under as long as this puppy gets released.
    So, in closing, you guys should all PRAY this game gets launched, and learn a thing or two about why it should be launched PROPERLY, even if it takes another few years to get done. Forget about stupid crap like grafix engines and shit talking WoW or whatever other game you want to use as a benchmark of progression for upcoming games. The ideas this developer has detailed for Darkfall should pique you all into giving them your support so we all get to see this monster hit shelves. When it does, games will be forced to get even MORE creative and innovative to be able to compete, which plays out better for us, the consuming gamers. STOP LETTING COMPANIES LIKE FAILCOM GET AWAY WITH RELEASING TOTAL SHIT. We all, regardless of what gaming era we are from, want games that will play like what Darkfall features. Support Darkfall, make it happen, better your gaming experiences.

    Besides, you have to agree I make a valid point, even you in your age as a gamer have to agree gaming could take a lot of points from Darkfall's ideas ;P

    Except that dark falls ideas are hardly anything new. I have experienced several games with ideas very similar at their conception, but it has been the implementation that has been lacking.  This is a reoccurence with many of these "innovative" games. Fans become enamored with a design statement and can't objectivly question the liklyhood a company has of meeting that design objective. Having a good idea, good writers, programmers and artists is such a minute park of making a MMO and in fact the easiest part. Darkfall has shown it's self at this point to be nothing but a collection of desires, desires in which any well experienced gamer has heard before and seen fail on mulitipule occasions.

    I hope darkfall pulls it off, but I understand the pitfalls involved in making a game on the scale that darkfall says it's attempting and have seen very little innovation/proof how they plan to account for those pitfalls.

    The first game I ever played was Ultima: Quest of the Avatar on a commodore 128.

    Then I "stepped up" to an Amiga 500 with 1 mb of memory.

    Then I really stepped up to a pentium 75 and played Dragon Lore...

    Same old, same old.  DF had fanbois believing on a 2008 release even as recent as a month ago.  What say you now?  Duh, it is very clear this game is not releasing anytime soon.  I am not so skeptical that I do not believe in the games exsistence, but I am realistic enough know that the game is NOT coming out in 2008.

    Speaking of not expressing anything genuine or informed... Your post boils down to:

     

    Darkfall is a good concept, even if the graphics suck (even worse than WoW's, which has been and continues to be successful). Since Darkfall is different than WoW, we should support it, not despite all the failed promises and outright lies, but because those lies mean the game will take over the world.

    Darkfall has not been in development so long to make it great. As both Brannoc and Claus have stated, the game has "taken way too long". Not "the game has taken as long as it needed in order to be great."

    And we're most of the way through August. We've passed the August 18th mark for the video, and have recieved absolutly no information this month.

    As you can cleary see the developer's were saying the same thing 7 years ago they are still saying today, beta, launch, publishing etc. will be happening "soon".
     
    Yet again another “supporter” demonstrates they are ignorant or in denial of the facts regarding Darkfalls development history, which probably explains why they are a supporter in the first place.

    You realise they did go through with that alpha by the way? Claus reports elsewhere how it went.

     

    Also, I don't see how you can even suggest a pre-alpha is a beta, duh.

    Most importantly, they've never set an official release date ever, until now, or in other words you've over-read and mis-interpreted Darkfall's development journals, which explains why you feel hurt and angry enough to scour the internet 24/7 for scraps of irrelevant info.

     

    Seriously, who cares that they've revised the scope of their game over the years, it's their prerogative as an independent developer to do so without a big-name money-hungry publisher breathing down their necks and forcing bad decisions on the game. The game will definitely be better for it.
