I've been looking at Darkfall for a long time.  It's got a really good idea, but theres little information they give us (The public).  Honestly, I didn't even expect to get it this far, I remember when they said they officially cancelled the project due to funds, then about a year ago I saw they were really working hard with a new team and everything.   I don't really care how long it takes, I have patience, especially with spore and WAR coming out this fall, I really don't mind if they wait another year to perfect the game.  All I want is a game that is finished, not a beta release (AOC).   I mean really, who actually demands this game to be released before its finished?  I never understood in some of these games releasing an unfinished game.  I've heard because they don't want to doubt their fans, but thats just plain dishonesty right there, instead of dissapointing them for a few more months, you kill their fun when its released.

What's the source of the client being 100% C++? I don't see it in the IRC chat.

yeah it doesn't say explicitly, i know i have read it somewhere though, i just can't yet place the reference. stands to reason, i sure as hell wouldn't use java on a 3d game client either.

    Overview:

Aventurine S.A. is looking for a senior game logic programmer for our highly anticipated MMORPG Darkfall Online.(www.darkfallonline.com)

The position requires you to implement gameplay features and system features in Java.

    --------

Gameplay features in Java?  That would mean their client is using Java for gameplay.

And now after 8 years of saying things will happen soon, they are still saying things will happen soon, and so far very few of them actually have, but yet they still have a community willing to wait.
If this routine has not changed in over 8 years I very much doubt it will in a month, simply all that will happen is the current members of the community who are no longer willing to wait will be replaced by new community members who are willing to wait.
This process has continued for 8 years and I see no reason why it wont simply continue indefinitely, multiple official / unofficial beta and release dates have come and gone as well as numerous other “promises” over the last 8 years.
And yet new community members, after 8 years of this, who replace those who are no longer willing to wait, are still willing wait for things to happen "soon" along with the allready existing community members who are still willing to wait.
All it requires is ignorance , naiveté and faith to perpetuate the cycle.
The only thing that can finally end this is for the things that have been perpetually about to happen soon for the last 8 years, like Beta, launch and new videos etc. to actually finally start happening "soon" i.e. in the next 5 months, or for Darkfall to be canceled.
Otherwise, 2008 along with all the things that were going to happen soon will come and go, along with the current members of the community who are no longer willing to wait, and a new community members and those still willing to wait will be getting excited all over again about the same things that might be happening sometime soon in 2009.

    Spot on!

This game will never be released.

    DF is a great scam.

So no "sexy time". Just more of Tasos lies.

Given the amount of time theyve drug this project out, everything theyve claimed to have completed would be out of date.

While definitely not the worst I've seen, I certainly wouldn't exactly call it sexy.

But then again anyone can make a pretty picture.  Let's see how it looks if and when the game comes out.

Haven't done a great deal of research on the developers, but Ricki Sickenger (Lead Tools/ Game Logic) has a lot of Java experience, and very little C++ (from circumstantial Google data). Can't find much on Kjetil Helland (Lead 3D/Client Programmer), but he may have more of a management background.

"Displays stuff" and "takes user input" is a hell of a lot of the "gamepay". You could just as easily say, all the server genius is AI and some databases.

That said, a lot of MMORPG's have clients written in Java.

LOL name me one commercial grade MMORPG that has a client written in JAVA.

NONE of them do. JAVA is slow as fuck compared to C++

Kjetil is the lead coder and main author of the 3d engine.

OK, you're misunderstanding what 'gameplay' is - gameplay is what's left once you take away all the main game subsystems - input, network stack, graphics engine, sound & mixing libraries, UI widget libraries, etc -- ie: gameplay is the content, the stuff i listed is the vehicle of that content.

By the way, there are basically no MMOs with a game client written in 100% java that don't run in a browser.

know whats funny?  the fact that they didnt just buy Hero Engine or Big World and save a few years of development time.. of course you need some REAL money for that though.

  • XxeonXxeon Member Posts: 559

they wasnt out when they started dev no engine could do what they wanted so they had to make it from scratch...

geese please.. running out of things arent you

and what exactly did they want?  An engine to show outdated graphics and a few characters running around on screen?

    They succeeded.
