The game just doesn't look that compelling. It looks good on paper, but everytime I see what appears to be a scripted video (including the new one) I'm left with a sense of "meh." I need to see a LOT more, or even play the game, before I cease being a naysayer.
I stopped reading after you tried to assume my age range in some kind of attempt to discredit me. (off by about a decade) Fact is there is a press release that was not released by Aventurine concerning the publishing deal with Audiovisual. Unless you have evidence that discredits Audiovisual, im going to just stick with good ol' occam's razor on this one.
I thought so. You really consider the minor press release by an unknown (to the gaming community) to be some sort of proof that DF is coming out?
If so, I'll point to SOE's signed, announced deal with PE for G&H and despite the fact the pre-order boxes were in stores, the game never came out. (people also had actually played a beta, for better or worse)
DF is a long way from becoming a released game and credible proof is still sorely lacking.
yea man that long video of IN GAME FOOTAGE just doesnt support my idea that this game is real and will be released.
there is clearly no one working on it and it is just vaporware.
clearly. i take my words with ketchup and salt and will gladly eat them after you clearly put me in my place.
Oh man the DF fans achieved victory today, and it feels so good.
See you guys in game, and spare me the "uhhh no you didnt win nothing is proven, its scripted!" comments.
Just b/c they claim that is in-game footage doesn't mean it actually is. I'm not saying it's not, just saying that there is no UI, or player interaction shown in that video. It COULD all be scripted. it doesn't show anything new, nor does it prove anything, least of all that there is a playable game with all the features in it that they claim. All I saw was a video of possibly scripted footage taken from what appears to be a game engine. For all we know, that video could have been created using scripts in Unreal 2.5. Not saying it was, just that it could have been.
As for beta sign-ups, give me a break. They've had beta sign-ups before, they've claimed beta was going to start at such-and-such a time before. This is nothing new. When beta does actually start, and people actually get in and get their hands on the game, THEN that will be something to come and tell people to eat-their-words over.
This is nothing new.
A possible publishing agreement? Yeah, that is possibly something important, and could go a long way. But just b/c they may have reached a tentative agreement w/ someone to have their game published, doesn't mean it will actually make it to release. Do I think the people at AudioVisual (or w/e it's called) would sign a publishing agreement for a game they never saw? Probably not. But it is possible they were shown a video like we were just shown, and no one ever actually got to play the game. As I understand it, the publishing agreement is TENTATIVE, meaning they will publish the game should it ever materialize. They aren't giving the devs any money yet, they aren't investing in Aventurine, they have just reached an agreement to publish the game should it ever be ready for release.
I'm not saying the game is vaporware, I'm not saying it's not. All I'm saying is this video shows nothing new, and is NOT proof that there is actually a playable game. Until someone that is known, credible, and neutral (meaning not some joker that no one has ever heard of, who claims to be a guild leader of a guild no one has ever heard of) gets their hands on the game and reports back to the world at large, I will still have my doubts that Darkfall is what these people claim it to be. The absolute LEAST they should have done was had a UI visible, and shown someone interacting with it and the game responding to said interactions. I don't care what they say that video is, they've made statements in the past that have turned out to be false, it COULD be scripted.
I'm sorry, but this is not something the Darkfall supporters should be jumping for joy about, saying "i told you so, now eat your words". Really, nothing has changed. There still isn't solid proof the game is everything the devs claim it to be, or that there even is a game being made. Again, I'm not saying it's vaporware, just that nothing has changed in my eyes. I'm sure I'm going to get flamed for my opinions, but so be it, I call it as I see it.
For the record, I actually DO hope that Darkfall is everything they claim it to be. It would be one hell of an enjoyable game, and certainly one that I'd like to play. I'm just a bit of a skeptic that hasn't seen anything from these guys that proves their claims.
The agreement with the publisher has been finalized in a report where the publishers says that beta will start in October.
Shanna you do realize the video (a 688 mbit video almost 18 min playtime) was launched today which is Friday, you might want to want for Friday to actually pass before saying it's not coming out. How does it feel to have a full dozen eggs in your face?
So in one day Darkfall launches both a massive trailer that shows all aspects of the game, they even do show crafting, trading, banking and that sort of stuff, as well as pve, and about 15 different types of pvp encounters.
As for that it could still be another Dark & Light, who knows, so why do you bring up your own speculations as facts, and still find the nerve to call us fools.
What we do know is that Darkfall has had a lot of more funding, a lot more time and have always been a lot more promising then Dark & Light ever was, that is what we know for a fact and leave it at that.
This game has been in production a very long time compared to other games. From what I've read it looks promising and fun, but until it goes gold I'm gonna be a skeptic of its actual release.
Played : WOW, LOTRO, COH/COV, EQ2, SWG, and WAR. Playing EVE Online and AOC. Wtg for SW:TOR and WOD

Wow, someone who actually remembers the history of MMORPG development and puts more belief in past experience than developer hype? I'm afraid that kind of common sense is hard to find in the MMOPRG community, most prefer to slavishly believe anything developers tell them.
Perhaps progress is being made in Darkfall. But if a game has a record of shakey development then it has to work MUCH harder to prove itself. Given the past record of this game's development people should be demanding a LOT more proof of it than just videos and a sign-up page.
Like say, a working demo being shown at PAX or E3 or Joe's PC Hut or something.
When I see vids of people playing that demo along with fan previews describing the game then I'll start to credit these developers and their claims. But not before. We've seen this too many times in the past, it's about time we learned from it. There absolutely no reason to cut developers ANY slack when it comes to backing up what they hype. Accept proof first then the hype, not the other way around.
Between the checklist the Devs gave and what the video showed... it was mostly flashy stuff and combat in emphasis. All the non-combat details weren't emphasized enough. Reminds me of the original WoW Trailer where it was all combat here and there.

I know its too much to ask for these trolls to act like men and admit when they are wrong but that is what I am asking. Plain and simple.
Just to make your day, I'm not changing my answer. The game is still vaporware as far as I'm concernd. The whole video looked and was scripted, many animation problems, and the textures terrible. Maybe you guys will get Darkfall The animated series.

Riight...cracking up over what?
At least people are using logic and not blind faith. As I said in my post, NOTHING has changed. The video didn't show anything new, there still was no UI, UI/player interaction, or player interaction/game response shown in any way. That video COULD (not saying it was, just that it could have been) have been nothing more then a bunch of scripts being executed in a readily available commercial game engine. And we all know they've promised beta, and even had beta sign-ups before.
So let me ask again, what exactly changed since yesterday?
Nothing. They posted ANOTHER video that doesn't prove there is a playable game w/ even half the features they claim, and they put an application on their website for a beta that there still isn't a start date for.
8/29/08 The day NOTHING changed in relation to Darkfall

Cause all that makes more sense than the more logical explanation right? If anything, the burden of proof has been shifted to the naysayers (if it wasnt already on them).
But whats so great about this trailer? I only see people bashing eachother with swords and magic and archers...so it's like a single player? Is that what this game really only is? A single-player mechanic but it's only? If so it's....not worth my time. But like I said, what's so great about it? It seems like it's only a clicking game...if you want that play a single-player and mod or something and make servers...

How can anyone watch this whole video and not think massively multiplayer...not just what you saw, but the possibilities that the game offers. I think i may see what you are saying with teh single player mechanics of attacking, but then you can make that arguement for any mmo i guess.

I guess that makes sense. I always thought that people looked up to this game as a bloody gory most energetic MMO ever, so I guess I was wrong? Is this game only towards the single-player lovers and the social lovers? So if I'm saying it right it's just basically a sandbox?...which is what all the so called 'MMO Vets' are wishing for? Is that right?
I'm not here to jab this game with a stick, I'm just here to wonder if that's what all the fussing is about? I thought it was more....ya know, more.

Don't worry, it's all about perception. And you're not alone, I feel the same way. However there's tons of people who feel like original, so we both get our games (when Darkfall comes out).
I may just be misreading your posts and not understanding your questions.
In terms of what makes this game MMO-centric i guess...
It forces companionship in a way. Sure you can go it alone, but the world is dangerous. Full loot pvp everywhere. Strength in numbers and all that.
The possibilities that the game offers are endless, and when you team up with other players the options increase even more. The game was built around large battles, specifically with friendly fire.
The friendly fire aspect forces you to interact with your friends on the battlefield so you cant just be paying attention to yourself in a single player asepect. Some people dont like this kind of gameplay, and thats totally ok, its a niche game and wont appeal to anyone.
But this game is very sandboxy which is what a lot of us have been craving since SWG pre-nge went away.

You're right. Now that I think about it, nothing has changed between the Pro-Darkfall people and the Nay-Darkfall folks. All the Pro-Darkfall people have is another video.
The two opposing camps need to consider this:
Pro-DF> They got a new video that is 16 minutes long.
Nay-DF> Don't give a rip about the video, because its not substantial and wasn't on the list of things that would prove DF isn't vaporware.
All we know is that SOMETHING is being worked on. We don't know if its going to pull through effectively. We DON'T know how buggy it is. We KNOW there's going to be bugs.
And to all the Nay-DF folk out there... the sad part about all this, is the Pro-DF folk are SO appreciative about a video that even if they don't get everything they're promised--- they'll still love their DF.
This is fanaticism. Its what started the Crusades. Love your DF. Love your God.

Which doesn't make sense, if it's supposed to be a niche game. It'd be 100x more fun with WoW's or WAR's numbers. Hell, put in some friendly fire in WAR and you'd have the same thing. The only difference would be WAR is more of a game (fun), and Darkfall is more of a "world" (realistic and time = reward, risk = reward, etc.) So Darkfall is a double-edged sword.

Alright, seems like it may be worth a try, if it does come up before I get hooked on something. But if what you say is true......why not just play Real Life, best MMO evahr! Has full loot pvp, perma death, everyone hates eachother, trafic, ah....almost seems like it's real!
Anyways yeah....can I build houses?
And make food?
And make clothes?
And have a party?
And have kids?
If you say no to ONE of those, it epic fails
But I'd like to add, like the above me, this game should fit everyones needs, not just pretend life in a big, evil, big, big world. I'd be more appealing if it had abilities, and some kind of....I dunno, AI Support?
What we are so excited about is the niche this game is offering. Even if the game gets shut down tomorrow, it is the idea of it that excites us.
Many gamers are just burned out with the same old style of gameplay that keeps being reused. Sure the IP changes, and graphics get a little better, and gameplay is a little more polished, but nothing really changes.
I am not a sci-fi gamer at all, minus some FPS sci-fis. But I loved playing EVE for awhile because of the difference in gameplay, true pvp, and sandboxy-ness.
The real answer to "what the fanbois get"...is that we get to see more of the game we love. We never needed proof that the game was real, any level headed person knew something was being worked on.
What do the naysayers get? Nothing. Unfortunatly the development of this game has baffled many people because it did not follow standard MMO development like we saw with AoC and WAR etc with communication with fans. So this has left people wondering wtf and how can a company act like this.
Today Aventurine really hit a home run and came through. Earlier today the trolls were giving us updates on the time in greece saying lol you guys fail again, its 5pm there, game over.
Then we find out that their staff stayed up till midnight their time to give us not on the promised video, but beta signups as well.
Say what you will, but it feels good to be a fan of a game that you are excited about. Especially when that game shows you more of what its all about. The trolls dont get this, because they are just petty by nature. Get a game, have some fun, why else would you be on a mmo forum?
What I saw when I watched that video: possibilities. I can be a pirate and roam the seas. I can terrorize other ships, or other players/cities on the shores. I can be a mercenary. I can get a group of friends together and we can become assassins. I can create a guild and build a city, taking part in politics and struggles for locations, resources, and bragging rights. I can be a peaceful crafter of goods. I can be a grunt in a "big guild" and take part in initiatives as directed. I can be an explorer. I can use a sword, or a bow, or magic, and combinations as well. When I attack or heal, I can affect my friends, and enemies. This requires attention to detail, I have to aim my spells and abilities. I can't target someone and spam keys while I watch TV like WoW.
IF this game runs smoothly and works, it'll be quite the sandbox. I guess people accustomed to WoW feeding them "content" in the way of time sinks and grinds might not like such freedom, or might lack the creativity to blaze their own path. But then again, this was never meant to be a mainstream MMO.

Educate me. I've lurked on this for months, but I'm new to participating in this conflict. You've inferred that you love this game. You've also admitted as a whole that you're chasing the ideal, because the idea excites you. Its like a young boy with a Hustler or a Playboy magazine.
"it did not follow standard MMO development". Well yes, it didn't, because its not endorsed by a big company, nor does it have any previous experience in the field. When you say "So this left people wondering wtf and how can a company act like this."? Its quite possibly because they haven't done this before. Developing a single-player game with a multiplayer-component is much easier to approach and endorse than an MMO. There is some skill required to do this... the reason why the Anti-DF crew exists is because Aventurine stumbles like a mofo going about this.
I have to admit, DAOC had this stumbling in its initial stages as well. WoW didn't do it so bad, because they had previous experience with their games and used Battle.Net as a platform to proceed with their MMO.
I'll give Aventurine the benefit of a doubt. But I realize the problem isn't DF itself... its the people who "love" it. In the end, we're not bagging on the game... its the zealotry. Not because we're jealous (i.e, ego-contesting), but because WE don't understand what in anyone's sane mind would cause a person to go religious (deeply-devoted) to an "idea" that has no wide-ranged media coverage or solid game publishing backing.

I've been a naysayer, and I won't eat my words.
The game just doesn't look that compelling. It looks good on paper, but everytime I see what appears to be a scripted video (including the new one) I'm left with a sense of "meh." I need to see a LOT more, or even play the game, before I cease being a naysayer.

And that is fine. I have no problem with that. The point most of us are talking about the trolls who have called it Vaporware and a hoax while insulting the followers of Darkfall.
We now have proof that Darkfall is not vaporware and now those same trolls are changing there arguement without admitting they were wrong.

To OP, you'll enjoy both more...

Dlore,
I may just be misreading your posts and not understanding your questions.

Argos,
No.

You sir seem to get it 100%
