You know, I am a Star Wars fan/geek for almost 30 years and a roleplayer for also a very long time. For me the idea to play a Jedi in a virtual RP setting like a MMO is like a dream. A dream SWG had never fulfilled. Somehow, following the SWTOR forums has saddened me. While there are sure some good and insightful people, a lot seem to be of a way... Somehow I wish you could limit Jedi class only to people with an intelligent and character test. Before you laugh it off, yeah its some odd nerdosity, but, it makes me cringe when I think what type of jerks will play that class. Ok, they will play other classes, too, but it only really matters with Jedi. For me, Jedi are one of the best fiction inventions, they are no mere action heroes like thousands of others from thousands of other fiction. Like a Star Trek officer, the idea of a Jedi is some inspiring dream of humans bettering themselves. In ancient times humanity transported ethics via heroic tales, of people overcoming obstacles inside or outside of themselves. And such a thing were Jedi for me. The deeper you delve with all the novels and games, the more you can learn of other points of view, and sure while Star Wars isnt a Holy Book it sure contains some ethical questions. To me thus playing Jedi has to have meaning. And it cringe and sigh at the thought what kind of jerks will play Jedi as action heroes, as killing machines who "hunt Sith" like trophies. Why does it always have to come down to this, which side kills more? Would not the Jedi class in a story-driven game be the one, big chance to make something better, something greater? Deep inside I hope they will impose limits to Jedi which sort of prevent jerks for playing Jedi. A Jedi must act like one, and be more than a soldier, more than just one more killing "bad guys" - action-hero.
Of course for Bioware I am afraid it will pay off more easier to just make Jedi another action melee soldier for the hyper hyper kids and leave those few folks with old fashioned ideas to their dreaming. Sorry for the rambling, I am sure 99% of folks will just wonder what that guy here the heck is talking about...
Well in my opinion, I believe the Star Wars Universe should have no reserve for the Jedi or Sith class. It should be an all out war against each other. BioWare has stated that this is a time when it is normal for there to be a bunch of Sith and a bunch of Jedi, but I know you're afraid of the kind of person who's going to play this game is ME....true for sure.
My gods. Are you people serious? Half of you are against the OP's words. Calling him an extremist, a dictator, and all sorts of things. Do any of you even know what those words mean? Seriously. It's like you're just pulling words out of the air because you think they sound cool.
All over because his opinion is worried about how people will take the game and how they will play. He's not saying kill all the non-believers. He's as worried as the rest of us true Star Wars Fans, and if you're -not- worried. Then, I'll go "absolute" and say, you aren't a true Star Wars fan. Just a person who wants to play a game, for no reason but to play it.
And RP Servers? Please. Do you know what happens to RP servers? They get flooded the most, because of the fools, the idiots, and the twinks who want to make fun of the RPers. And 99.9% of the time, they're not enforced anyway. They're more a PVE then an RP server.
I have two forces by my side; One's the truth and one's a lie; Which one's which I cannot tell; This Enigma is my Hell..
A 'true Star Wars' fan. LOL. Thatll be the day, that I let other players judge if Im worthy to play a game. Besides I dont know how anyone can be called a 'true fan' of the timesetting of this game. It has nothing to do with the movies and takes place after the kotor games.
Bioware will be responsible for the lore. That wont be kiddie
bioware has consistantly kept to a modified table top version of rpgs in all their games. In the starwars table tops the jedi are less of a action tank, they fall into a light armor paladin role more or less. Most people that go off the bat to make a jedi will think I need str to use my lightsaber and con to live longer. They will neglect the two major skills of the jedi class, those being dex and wisdom. Now I am merely going off of the old KoToR and KoToR II set ups to assume how they will run this. Limiting jedi will not really work, what should be asked for however is an rp sever with stricter rules of play. No ooc channel, and gms that are prompt to respond to spam and herasment petitions will help on that too.
Every game ever made has a following of people that run the gambit from stupid to hyper intelectual, in this way it is much like the real world. Like the real world you can choose to ignore the people you don't like in an mmo, or more aptly choose to avoid servers that are prone to such people. RP servers tend to discourgae such people as long as the community is behind the server rules. Basically this means ignore, don't group with, and pretty much black ball the people that want to harsh your gameing mellow.
The Jedi on the whole draw two kinds of people, those who understand it as a class, and those who just think lightsabers are cool. A closer study of jedi brings one to see that they are a mystical and metaphysical order above all else. Embracing violence only as a necessity to breing peace to a troubled time. I see them as practicing a type of arite in the force, taking only enough in all things, in this they are kept for the temptation of the force. A simple constant belief that you need only enough to live, to act, to be. Endulging to much in any aspect of the force leading to corruption and an addiction to the ease with which things come to those who wield the force.
They are however not gods, their powers are limited as atton rand in KoToRII's character shows, keeping the surface thoughts of ones mind in a constant state of termoil can allow one to hind intetions from a jedi. For someone who uses their mind to see what is comming, their comes a point where they miss the physical warning signs of an attack, waiting instead to feel it coming. I can honestly say I have high hopes for SWToR, that I hope bioware makes a game that draws many players, but that they also design many servers to pull the varried ideaologies into like minded pools.
I humbely appologize for letting my comment turn into a treatest on something else, be well
I must say I somewhat agree with OP, but not because of folks being stupid or retarded but because the world will be flooded by jedi, everyone seem to be jedi/sith and some few bounty hunters and others.. I mean isnt that the mistake SOE made? Id rather see the jedi/sith class something hard to achieve, perhaps something only a few would so that the general mass was something else and the magic restored to these classes. "Look theres a Jedi over ther" responds "cool"
this is good "yaaay Im a jedi" responds "jedi are stupid Sith like me much better" responds "so... you wanna party/team"
this is bad
Its not comparable to what SOE did. They let everyone be jedi in a time that there shouldnt be that many Jedi.
Jedi vs Sith will be a major conflict in this game. Of course there will be loads of Jedi! Get rid of your SWG mindset already.
Idiots are everywhere and there is nothing that can be done about it. Just the other day I went to our local mall and a guy was strutting around with no shirt on and his pants hanging below his butt cheek so you could see his dong flopping around in his boxers. You do the same thing in game as you do in real life, filter it out and surround yourself with mature, like minded individuals who behave respectfully. That's all that can be done, unless the government starts handing out hunting licenses to thin the herd.
To address an issue like this... simply make some servers for adults only, ages 21+. Obviously, they would need to make some servers for players 'of all ages', but I really would like to see some servers where I didn't have to deal with kids.

ummmm. Call me crazy but how would they ever enforce this? As long as mom and dad hands over the credit card and says "go for it" anyone can get on that server. It'll never happen.

So your ok with taking the Op's intelligence and character test when you buy the game?
Unless ofc you are the OP and decided to make another account to backup this ludicrous idea ?
I would be content if they just actually enforce the rules and have a extremely strict naming policy on RP servers. Don't want to see anyone name Ipwnyou or Ifdumom.
To address an issue like this... simply make some servers for adults only, ages 21+. Obviously, they would need to make some servers for players 'of all ages', but I really would like to see some servers where I didn't have to deal with kids.
Thats like those guilds that only recruit ppl over a certain age. I find it so ignorant that such a rule will prevent childish behaviour. In my experience the typical asshat in a game isnt that young.
Actually I think that people who favour age discrimination need to grow up.

I agree it's impossible to police such a system, nice idea but it would be a logistical failure.
My oldest son who is now 16 started playing WoW when he was 13, he first played alongside me then after I quit he found himself a guild and joined, I was surprised to learn that he had not told the guild his age, they didn't have an age requirement, but when I used his account and was explaining who I was they where all very surprised to find out his true age, they had all assumed he was in his early 20's, so it just goes to show that some youngsters out there can act and behave in a way that is beyond their years.
Did you get all worried and upset that maybe some douchebag asshole enjoyed the movies? How is the game any different? Seriously this thread points out 1 large flaw and it isn't a matter of elitism.
Publishers should stop taking beloved intelectual properties and taking a corporate shit on them in hopes of catering to the lowest common denominator in the hopes of profit. if you want to fuck up an IP let it be one that's at least original. Creating a world isn't hard, the problem is in its population and what it consists of.
OP why dont you play a SP game? That way other lesser intellects cant spoil your fun. Why MMO at all or do you see everyone else playing as cannon fodder and there for your enjoyment?
I also love how the RP server brigade see their style of play as "more mature." Why is that? Because you talk like a 17th century cornish man when RPing your hobbit?
How can you be a social inadequate and a geek all at the same time?
Hmmm while I enjoy Elikal's threads and posts mostly this one kind of riles me up, therefore I'll keep this short before I rant.
Here's an idea, if you want to play with just your elite friends and put everyone else on ignore you can, turn off general and trade chat ect.. It's not because you think some kid is being an idiot that this kid doesn't think your an idiot yourself. Are you right, is he? Truth is you both are.
If you can't live with people that are different then you then consider closeting yourself and never coming out of the house. Because people that get on your nerves are everywhere you go.
QQ Jedis everywhere!! Aren't we beyond this yet? It's part of the lore, the game and the story get over it people.
I don't see why it would be so hard to roleplay any character in any game the way you wanted to. Just because nobody else is doing it, or some people think it's stupid, shouldn't ruin your enjoyment of a character in a game. I love to roleplay, its why i play roleplaying games. That doesn't mean I talk differently, or even really act differently than I do outside the game, but I make different choices based on the charcter I'm playing in game. I set my own limits and react according to how I belive the character would react to whatever situation I come across. This has nothing to do with what age or intellegence the other players on my server are.
However, I do lose a sense of immersion when people start talking about their real life, or stats, or whatever, but it's not a bad thing to realize you are playing a video game once in awhile. Just have fun. I can understand how it would be kinda silly to have 90% of a game playing the same class. In this case, if it really bothers you, you could either pick a different class to play or play a different game.
Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.
Another thing I just tought of reading the above post, is while many, many, many people will choose Jedi when the game launches I don't expect everyone will and as time goes on people are going to want to try other things and some others like myself will pick anything BUT Jedi.
It's like Barbarians in Conan, of course many people will want to play a Barbarian right away but that doesn't mean that's all you'll see while playing. And I don't want to hear how AoC sucks, that's not why I'm using the example heh.

Well its like anything else..
You are going to have people who liked different things about Star Wars. When they started talking about "Jedi" in SWG I wasn't interested. Well I read what came out before and during beta, but it wasn't something I wanted to be.
I wanted to be... a bounty hunter.
When The Empire Strike Back came out and there was the scene on the star destroyer with the bounty hunters... For some reason that scene really stuck with me.
Oddly enough if I play The Old Republic I still don't really have any interest in being a Jedi. Obviously many people as you say.. will.
While I do enjoy the movies, the Star Wars saga is rooted in a lone smuggler who has turned from the fence line to the side of…well his own which seems in touch with the good side, sometimes. Now all this rubbish about Jedi is a concept that evades me. A good guy who stays a good guy in an organization that makes the rules to their agenda. Sounds like a few presidents I read about. One should have to take an intelligence test just to find out if they are dumb enough to be a Jedi and be led around by the powers to be. The good side is just as evil as the dark side, its in the blood (Luke, I am your father). Never catch a smugglers daddy sayin that.
I say let all the kiddies be jedi, they will get bored within a month and go back to WOW. For me, Ill make my own way and not be controlled by the self proclaimed “good side” or the “wanna-be dark side.” Yarrr, its only right.
I'm with antarious on this one, I am sure I will make a sith at some point but at the start I plan to play a wookie or some other large sized creature, soldier class and walk around with blasters and maybe a vibrosword. I cant see how one class would be perceived as kiddie and the other not. I think that maturity means that you are not bothered with such trivial issues.
