"With more than 11.5 million monthly subscribers,World of Warcraft is currently the world's largest MMORPG in those terms, and holds the Guinness World Record for the most popular MMORPG.In April 2008, World of Warcraft was estimated to hold 62% of the massively multiplayer online game (MMOG) market."

I thought it was obvious but I'll state it more clearly. World of Warcraft is 4 1/2 years old and is still the top MMORPG on the market. I think that's pretty amazing. For all the bashing that the haters of this game have done(and still do), the game is a still going strong with no signs of slowing down.
One day, there will be a game that will come along and knock it off it's perch. It is inevitable because all good things come to and end. But for this game to still be the top dog 4 1/2 years after its release is pretty amazing.

Ahh, it was an "I'm going to point out the obvious" thread. Got ya. Can I join in? I'm amazed that there hasn't been a good MMO released since WoW. I'm amazed people continue to run on that gear tredmill for 4 and 1/2 years. Don't get me wrong, I think WoW is great for what it is, but I'm still amazed that people haven't figured out that the game is nothing more than a gear tredmill, or if they have, that they actually enjoy it.
Frankly, I think WoW's initial success was due to advertising and polish, but since then it's continued success is due to lack of competition, incredibly high accessability, and simply because it's popular so everyone plays it, even if it isn't the best product on the market. Like Itunes, or something along those lines.

Difference between WOW and EQ/DAoC. WoW always stuck to their orginal gameplan. Make an easy to level game with raiding. EQ and DAoC change their core at every expansion. That's why I think WOW has kept growing. It has stayed true to its original game, which is more than I can say for once popular MMOs.
As to why there have been no successful games past WOW. IMO, its because they've all tried to copy WoW. WoW isn't fun to some of us, and to the ones who like why would they leave?
Congratz to WoW. My only hope is that Blizzard makes another game for the rest of us. I think they are the only ones who will break this WoW clone streak.
100% agree with you,, WoW is a great game...i played for 3 years...but i dont get into the endgame much,,cause it is such a griiiind...some may not mind this...i just get bored...but yeah...WoW was awesome...but ive done it too much...lol...well done blizzard...but i am waiting on the edge of my seat for something new to come out that kicks WoW's butt....:D
The problem with Blizzard announcing these numbers is that when WoW begins its inevitable decline (it's going to happen sometime people), as the old saying goes, the taller they are, the harder they fall.
Say for example Blizzard lost half of its fanbase who moved to the new Blizzard MMO. That's a loss of almost 6 million people. Harsh. But, that's still almost 6 times the subscriber base of its nearest competitor, which last I checked was a tossup between Lineage 2 and FFXI.
So, Blizzard has dug its own grave, for any loss is going to be seen as catastrophic doom, when in fact the game is doing stupidly well even then compared to other MMO's, where the baseline by industry standards is that gaining 100k subscribers is considered a successful business move. Many operate below this number.
Remember, it has to be fun to be a game. Grinding is a bedroom activity, and the point is definitely not to do my wife as fast as possible.
Explain to me how Subscribers moving from one of your own games to Moving to another of your games *and* buying a new box for that game, is "Digging their own grave"?

Just because you don't like the game doesn't mean it sucks as a fact, it means it doesn't suit your view of what it should be. Clearly there are more people in the MMO world that don't support your view. That doesn't mean they are right, or you aren't, just means that you're a minority.
It's amazing how the WOW haters flock to this forum like flies on shit for a game that they supposedly detest. Seriously folks, get over it. Whatever game you were playing before World of Warcraft came out got squashed like a little bug because people found this game more appealing. That's not the fault of Blizzard, that is the fault of whatever company was making your game. It's that companies fault for not making a game more appealing except to only a niche group of players who crave extreme game mechanics(forced grouping, perma death) that only the "Thank you sir, may I have another?" crowd would eat up.
It's not Blizzard's fault that every company out there decided to copy WOW afterwards. Or that other morons like SOE decided to make their horrible game worse by revamping it and making it a WOW clone with a FPS. A lot of the comments I read here and on other gaming forums read like the KKK , who are still pissed off that the South lost the war and want to bring back the confederacy.

I remember when I was in beta for WoW.....During the final days before release alot of us were talking in chat and most of us thought it was a nice game but that most of us wouldnt play it more than a couple months......It was too simplistic and it seemed that most people would get bored with it fairly quickly.......I still dont see how people can play it for so long but to each his own.
Sure they can, how many people thought the Earth was flat?
That is nonsense. The best science in those days see the earth as flat, the best science now see the earth as a sphere, the best science in the future might laugh at our generation now. What is right? It is what the majority believes.
As for 11.5 million cannot be wrong. That is a mute statement. There is nothing right or wrong liking a game. Its just a game. You can be right if you love a game only you play. So long as you play and enjoy. There are more than 11.5 million drug addicts on earth, does not make that "right" for me.
I am by no means a wow basher. I played it for a couple years and enjoyed it. However, I think it is far from a real MMO. Please, dont take this the wrong way. It is an MMO and it is good for the type that it is. But in thinking about why I enjoyed playing wow vs when I had my love/hate relationship with EQ (which that love/hate relationship will always be there), I realized something.
Playing Everquest was a lot of fun and frustration at the same time. It had huge highs and even lower lows when it came to the battle of the hour you were fighting. During that time though, you are very connected with the character that you have created. You are in a sense playing as yourself. You dont want to die, You dont want your character to die, you made much more logical decisions when playing. None of this zerg crap that goes on in todays mmo's. Just like the real world, Fear is a huge motivator and EQ had loads of fear built right into the game. You dont see that in WoW. Its not that type of game. To me, WoW is like watching cartoons. (This is not a pun at its graphics, I actually liked its style of graphics). Cartoons are great, they make you laugh and are almost always an enjoyable experience. While you dont connect with the cartoons, they are entertaining and thus enjoyable. The same goes with WoW. It is entertaining for the most part, but you dont really connect with your character. You play the game much like you would watch a cartoon. It is easy, not a big learning curve at all. You dont have to put forth much effort and you get rewarded a lot. You dont have to worry about whats around the corner, you dont have to worry or fear anything at all in the game. I think that is why WoW is so popular, almost everyone loves to watch cartoons, it would just fall in place that they would like WoW to. And considering that this is a new generation of MMO players compared to those that played old EQ or earlier, this is all they know.

my statement has nothing to do with telling you that anything is right for you. it simply means that those group of people think the game is well made and doing a great job. there is no denying that fact.

WoW's success is due to advertisement? Oh can you sustain sales of empty bottles for 4 years for a price of a filled bottle of milk? That is bullshit number 1.
That people have not figured out after 4 years that it is threadmill? What does that mean? It means ppl do not agree with your negative view, they see fun in it that you cannot. Nothing wrong about either, except that you have to criticise others enjoying a game, while others respect your right to NOT enjoy it. This talks large on tolerance and understanding, and lacking from you.
You listed some features you think had helped WoW maintain its market share. You failed to realise this is exactly why there is no competition currently, b/c no company has been able to provide that kind of services these days. MMO is not a monopoly, MMO is not terribly expensive to launch, 10/20 million dollars is trivial these days to major corporates. Yet no one is able to provide a product that at least has just the kind of basic quality (accessibility, retention of clients ....). You say its not the best product in the market, you say there is no competition, you said ... how contradicatory, how biased.
Yes, that is impressive. To be honest I think Wow is a nice game but it doesn't deserve that big percentage of the market, there are many games around that deserves to be played.
But Blizzard are really good on finding out what most players want and giving it to them, only western game that even competed with it for a while was Guildwars (which had no monthly fees) but Wow won, mostly because GW was made on a very low budget.
The people anyways Wow have to thank are Strain (head dev for the first years in development) and Kaplan, it is their brilliant programming that made Wow so huge, other games have as good or better world but the polish and programming are something few if any can match.
If Kaplan ever should quit, I doubt that Blizz next MMO would be a hit. Already that Strain quited was a big setback, there are few people like that around and I don't see how Blizz could replace a guy like Kaplan.
Still, Wow is aging fast now so the time is almost here for a new king on the block. It might not come until 2010 since few games with the potential to take over comes 2009.
Nothing lasts for ever.

This I perfectly agree, except that the word right/wrong lends itself to easy misinterpretation, like the reply you got earlier from Abrahmm.
WoW is enjoyed by the 11.5million, me one of them as I pay for my account. I am not right or wrong, I am paying cos I think its worth $15, more than other ways of spending $15. I am not criticising you, nor WoWers, I am saying, better not use the word "rightt" or "wrong". Its a preference, and it cannot be measured along the right-wrong dimension.
I play WoW, and I do not know if I am wrong. Cos I do not care. I play while I enjoy, and log out when I want to. That is all to it.
World of Warcraft is a Succesful game. It is only bad if you see it as bad, You are entitled to your opinion, do I think WoW is a good game in a sense yes and in a sense no. One being that it has over 11.5 million suscribers and is still gaining players, two I would not play it because I have grown sick of it.
McDonalds is the best place to buy cheeseburgers cause they have 11.5 millions subs
Darkfalls so revolutionary it uninstalls itself.
Ah, there it is. Im surprise it took till page four till somebody mentioned the Mcdonalds and WoW analogy.
Anyways, Pesmergia, ive been reading your post and you truly are starting to reek of ignorance, not just in your views on gaming but about life in general. Also, im starting to actually doubt how valid your claims are, because as a long time WoW player and fan, who knows many other long time WoW players and fans, some of the terms you use dont really seem...spot on.
Basically, im calling your bullshit.
