I think it is goingto be a mix cause there were some great concepts in SWG and some bad ones and  they will take the ones that worked and use them to make the ultimate game play and thats the realitiy of it so..

I don't at this point we will ever see another version of  SWG, the one SOE published with Luca Arts. I think we are in for a different
kind of ride on this new Star Wars title.
Though I am a big Star Wars fan like most of the world is, I am kind of worried about the new title and what kind of mmorpg
experience it will bring to us. I will just hope for the best.

Are they still going to use Microtransactions on this game (SW:ToR)?

I don't know, But whether they did or didn’t isn’t a factor for me. It's Star Wars, and SOE has nothing to do with it.

I would love to see another game LIKE SWG...but not star wars. The way the game was, was great. Another company could make a game like it. But don't take on the SW name. It is sad to see games taking an IP and ruining it by putting out a half assed MMO.

SWG, Matrix, Age of Conan, LoTR all shoulda been excellent games, and to some they are, but they never capture the feeling of being part of the world created in the books/movies. Games based on a popular title to me, are just using that title to try n lure players...counting on the title itself to make the game.

I am looking forward to what Bioware comes out with. I doubt it will be as hardcore as ol SWG was. But it will probibly entertaining for a month or two.

It's not the name, it's the lore. I like Star Wars, even if I don't like all the stories xD

What if they give you neither SW:TOR or SWG 2?  What if they give you NGE 2?

What the hell is NGE 2? TOR will be what is, and it isn't SWG. Not even SOE would do another NGE, and if they did the folks playing it now would most likely love it. SWG is not my game anymore so I don't care, and BioWare isn't SOE.

SWG had its time. SoE messed it up.

I'm interested in Bioware and what they are doing with SW:TOR. I hope they can make an engaging game that will keep me playing.

ugh let's get a couple of things straight. SWG was a terrible game when it launched. It was bleeding subscribers left, right and center which is the reason why the CU and the NGE came along. A desperate attempt to save a game that was flawed from the start. If SWG had launched as NGE my guess is it would be pretty successful today. However, you simply cannot change MMO half way through or shit happens like it did with SWG.

SWTOR better be it's own game and the further it will stay away from SWG the better.

I don't want to see SWG2. Ideally I would like to see the skill/profession system, the crafting, the big open worlds, the player cities/housing, and the general freedom and sandbox nature of SWG, with the great story and quality that Bioware is known for.

But, I'm all too aware the game will probably contain none of those.

Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.

i voted for TOR. i had a great time with SWG from pre-cu through the nge. i never complained or threw a fit when things got changed. i accepted it and rolled with it and kept playing. eventually i was the only one left in my guild and really didnt have anyone i knew to play with anymore. that is what basically drove me from the game. i am looking forward to biowares game and am in no shape, form or fashion interested in another SWG.

I was an early SWG beta tester and like the vast majority of testers at the time warned against releasing the game in the state it was in. The developers ignored all feedback testers gave them and launched anyways. You are correct, I never played the retail version like many of my fellow beta testers. We realsised then what the developers realised a couple of years later - that the game was dead and needed to be fixed. Too little too late. Let's hope Bioware does not make the same mistake.

I would rather have KOTOR online. But with simliar things which made SWG such an awesome game. Player cites/bases/shops, not instanced, a fuck load of classes and the best crafting system ever made in a mmo.

The old republic online, looks well... It looks like a good single player game. It looks 100% instanced... you have some gay ass character following you around because they want that whole "story crap which I cant see working in a mmo", which from what I've seen you have no choice in the matter. Its MMO I dont want a NPC following me everywhere. Sigh

Meh I dont understand why they made it online, should of just been KOTOR 3.

LMAO.. The problem is.. SWG was a cancer from day 1.. It was just a matter of time before it died.. (which it did for ALL the right reasons)  But I see your point and understand, and agree.. There was alot of wonderful ideas with SWG as many other games in the market, the problem is Dev's normally have THEIR way or the highway mentality, and some games are just destine for failure..

Really? We need yet another posting started on this subject?

I hoping SW:TOR will be nothing like SWG in whatever messed up form it was. Bioware, I believe, will bring a breath of fresh air to this genre through their  abilities to tell unique and captivatiy stories with their games.

I think that all but the most feverent SWG fans have admitted defeat on this. BioWare seems to be well along in the dev cycle and are not going to turn the bus around now.

All thats left for them to do is a. try the game and see if they like it, b. walk away and get on with life, or c. Start the doomsaying and the hate posts, trying to sabotage this game.

And SOE was only part of the problem with SWG. I think the bigger part was LucasArts. They are anything Star War's worst enemy.

Its the name.. i dont like star wars as a series, as a story, i dont watch the movies, i dont look forward to the games. However, i like KOTOR, I like every game bioware has made, i have no doubt id like this one.

SWG had potential, only the players saw, the Developers had little interest in the game, more than likely all D&D wanna be wizards. They never understood the concept of a sandbox, they pushed out a game that everyone could see was half done at best. They caved in to the cry-baby carebears which ruined everything by taking away all risks.

The game became boring and easy, and why stick around when they ruined half of it by destroying all player interactions and crafting and deleted most of the proffesions. SWG is a broken and neglected game.

SWG2 will never be made, SOE and LEC have parted ways and will never work on a new project again with each other. Why? LEC is a a$$hat company that doesnt understand the mmo market. It is the reason you saw 2 major changes to SWG, they pushed the CU and NGE, and refused to backdown because they know whats best.

I really dont see the appeal of this game at all, it is a over-hyped console game that will never live up to the fanboy expectations. Sure their all "THIS IS GONNA BE THE BEST GAME EVER", but we all know after they play for the first week its all wow, then a month in they see the flaws and finally wake up from thier fanboy dream.

Who-ever can make a game with EVE space, SWG crafting, SWG entertainers, AOC graphics, WOW and EQ2 instances and itemization, a first person shooter combat system, will rake in money. I dont see any games like that in development. A game like that more than likely isnt going to happen for 10-20 years.

I suspect the OP is a joking but it still reflects the idea that you can judge a game seperately from the company running it.

It doesn't matter if a company makes a decent game if they can't manage and run it properly, running a MMORPG is a service not just about developing game mechanics. Companies shouldn't try to copy other games, they need to make their own game that they are able to support and run properly once it's released.

That's not saying SWG did not have it's fundamental problems. Emphasizing Crafting and skills like Dancing in a Star Wars game is a questionable design choice at best. Diehards can point out how SOE screwed things up, but they have to realize the possibility the game mechanics wouldn't have kept significant players even without SOE's problems.

SWG had it's chance. It failed. Now Bioware is going to try and they won't succeed by looking at other games, but rather developing it themselves. They've shown they understand how to make decent games, I say let them do it.

I think my answer is somewhere between the first two options. I liked the early days of SWG a lot and I think that it had many features that current MMOs lack. However, I would like to see Bioware add their own spin on things. By no means should Bioware base TOR on SWG and try to make a new SWG. They should recognize that SWG was a great game and take some of the great concepts and features of SWG and add it to their new and different game. Obviously Bioware is going to keep this in mind, given that most SWG players are going to try this game out.

  • jadan2000jadan2000 Member UncommonPosts: 508

I think we want a little bit of both. There are things in SWG that just were some of teh greatest ideas in gaming history:

    1. Social aspects

    2. interdependency

    3. skill systems

    4. space combat system

    5. player housing/ city building

but there comes a time when you need something new. All together people need to understand that TOR will not be like SWG, but it doesnt mean it wont be good.

True that. I've never seen a horse get so much attention even after it died.

    Currently Playing: World of Warcraft

  • I don't want a SWG2 if I wanted SWG it still exists. Now pre-cu, cu don't but who cares those times are over with. I do not want this company thinking it should or even try to mimic a system like SWG had. I just want them to come up with a  unique game design that isn't WoW in the Star Wars universe.

SWTOR has cleared the way for alot of Star Wars Fans, and brought back hope. Such as my self, I have played SWG since launch and seen the mistakes they made. Since, Bioware and EA are doing this game. We do not have to worry about Sony Screwing it up. I believe Bioware, will make this game worth it and bring its own Unique Game Style to it.

So no SWG 2, a game should not get a second chance, because they screwed it up. It is get out of the way to bring in the new team.

you can worry about EA screwing it though. EA desperately want to have a wow of their own.
