Star Wars Galaxies for me was in fact the first mmo I ever played up to that point the few games I knew of as mmos hd nothing to interest me enough to pay a company a monthly fee to play the game then one of my favorite ips was created and I bucked the trend and subbed. It was great to play in the universe of SW that I loved so much from the movies to the comics to the novels.Suddenly some fairly common mmo problems began to creep in announced and stealth nerfs, server downtimes, immature players and I left soon after the nge and combat upgrade hit and the you know what hit the fan thankfully I was gone by then.
Strange thing happened then paying a monthly fee for a game I had purchased didn't seem so bad so I tried other franchises that interested mesuch as CoH/V,WoW,Guilwars,LOTRO and a few others and I came to realize that SWG was none of the things you describe it was not innovative, brilliant or anything like it it ws a shell of an actual game it basically gave us a lot of empty space and a bunch of random mobs to grind.
the themeparks never worked the quests were random and buggy and offered so little reward it was often not worth the walk to the terminal to get the quest was better to just go grind for resources.
Look had management been successful in turning SWG into even half the game that wow was I would have been all for it but I have never felt like they succeeded and that was even after trying the nge it was still buggy and pointless to play without finding some sort of way to entertain yourself while walking around in cartoon world.
Main theme of this reply is this game was just plain and simply never very good combat rarely made sense the crafting,rp and housing were the only parts of the game worth playing which at the very least is a shallow experience.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
SWG was my first MMORPG and my experience almost made me give up MMOs forever. Some of the many problems the game had:
Having to re-learn my character because of skills being nerfed
Having to change my weapons or armour because of a nerf or patch
Having to stand in various lines for heals and buffs just to play the game.
Having to deal with greedy crafters every few weeks because of insane degrading of my gear
Having to deal with lag and rubberbanding on a daily basis.
Having to deal with broken specials and professions that were never fixed because the DEVS were too busy playing jedi
Having to stay out of PVP because a jedi would wack you in five seconds.
Not having a good tutorial for those like me who were playing their first MMORPG.
Being forced to group with people so that it wouldn't take months just to gain one skill box.
Not knowing what the hell I was supposed to do in the game. I don't need to be held by the hand, but a few "getting to know the game" quests wouldn't have hurt.
Developers who were some of the rudest and condenscending I have ever seen. These people thought they were god's gift to the MMO world until World of Warcraft came along to knock them off their high pedastol.
A community filled with greedy crafters and elitist jedi. Some of the biggest pricks I've ever met in a game came from SWG. World of Warcraft doesn't even come close to touching the type of douchebags I met in the 2 1/2 years I played SWG.
So forgive me if I ain't falling all over myself to relive that experience.
SWG was my first MMORPG and my experience almost made me give up MMOs forever. Some of the many problems the game had:
Having to re-learn my character because of skills being nerfed Happens in every game. Having to change my weapons or armour because of a nerf or patch How often did this happen? Not much. Even then, it isn't a big deal as weapons and armor are easy to come by, unlike other games. Having to stand in various lines for heals and buffs just to play the game. Oh no, social interaction. I hope you didn't melt away. Having to deal with greedy crafters every few weeks because of insane degrading of my gear You must not be familiar with how economies work. I love the "Greedy crafters" one liner always thrown around. I found crafters to be anything but that, and usually incredibly nice and helpful. Having to deal with lag and rubberbanding on a daily basis. Only found that to be an issue in highly populated areas, which you find in a lot of games. Having to deal with broken specials and professions that were never fixed because the DEVS were too busy playing jedi I agree with the first part, but the second part just makes you look stupid. Devs too busy playing Jedi? Are you kidding me? If anything, stuff didn't get fixed because the devs spent so much time re-writing the game instead of making it better. Having to stay out of PVP because a jedi would wack you in five seconds. You must have really sucked at PvP then. Not having a good tutorial for those like me who were playing their first MMORPG. It was my first MMO too. I got by just fine. It's not their fault you couldn't figure things out on your own. Being forced to group with people so that it wouldn't take months just to gain one skill box. Yes, because MMOs are supposed to be single player games with a monthly fee. Not knowing what the hell I was supposed to do in the game. I don't need to be held by the hand, but a few "getting to know the game" quests wouldn't have hurt. True, that would have helped. I've never found a better community than the one I found in SWG, and I think most people that played it agree.
So forgive me if I ain't falling all over myself to relive that experience. Lucky for you, no other game gives that experience. Sorry some of us that liked it want to have it again.

I would rather have KOTOR online. But with simliar things which made SWG such an awesome game. Player cites/bases/shops, not instanced, a fuck load of classes and the best crafting system ever made in a mmo. The old republic online, looks well... It looks like a good single player game. It looks 100% instanced... you have some gay ass character following you around because they want that whole "story crap which I cant see working in a mmo", which from what I've seen you have no choice in the matter. Its MMO I dont want a NPC following me everywhere. Sigh Meh I dont understand why they made it online, should of just been KOTOR 3.
I would love a sandbox type SWtOR, SWG II is just completely ruined by $OE.
That is a good thing,
No need to waste the IP on Uncle Owen, especially when there are tons of other SW fans that wanna play as well.
Let Uncle Owen cyber his mangina ents in an indie game.
If folks wanna just buy their gear, and not actually have to face the toughest content to get it they can use a gold seller. Wrapping a game, intended for many, around the few crafters is the most ignorant idea someone could come up with.

Asking Devs to make AAA sandbox titles is like trying to get fine dining on a McDonalds dollar menu budget.
I'd rather see Precu SWG. But since that won't 'officially' happen, I would love to see an SWG 2 with all the same features but better implemented. Ofcourse, that will not happen either. So like everyone else around here I am looking forward to SWTOR.
It looks like Bioware is coming up with some kind of Guild Wars type game but with a sub, but I will be happily and pleasantly surprised if this is not the case. Now there is nothing wrong with Guild Wars. I played it and loved it at the time, it just felt more like a coop game than an mmo to me.
SWG might be the most brilliant MMORPG ever created. All of the features are there, and it was so far ahead of its time when the game was released. It did fall under bad management and a saboteur at SOE; this saboteur, in seeing a competitor developing (such as WoW for EQ) will strike at the perfect moment to bring a game down. It is amazing to me that saboteurs actually do exist.
Would you rather have a SW:toR or a game like SWG but new?
Personaly I would much rather see a Star Wars Galaxies 2, highly polished, close to next gen graphics, but still playeble at machine's 2/3 years old, full of content, full of player created content, full of quest for those into it, full of freedom so meaning many sandbox like feature's as no MMORPG can truly be a sandbox game, still wondering why many call EVE a sandbox game, while to me it's a game that does have certain sandbox feature's, but still can't consider that game a sandbox, but I have/had the same feeling with SWG as to me it had/has sandbox feature's, but it's mixed with linear and handhold style's which is good for a MMORPG to catter to different playstyle's.
BUT.........
I will never expect a sort of SWG 2 from a company like Bioware, I love Bioware, played "almost" every game they made and pretty curious in what they are able to deliver in the MMO scene, I also know they are very good at story telling, their games have a certain freedom in choices but all boil down to very linear story's, but still great at that.
So to answer your Tittle question, I really would love a SWG 2 but do not want it coming from Bioware, I am sure many will want SW:Tor cause lets face it SWG was a very niche game when it started it cattered more towards the MMO"RPG" crowd then it does to the MMO crowd. And SW:Tor seems to be a perfect fit for Bioware, I am afraid that a SWG needs to be coming from SOE and SOE only regardless the mess they have made when they implimented the NGE, I still consider SOE more of a company willing to develop MMO "RPG"'s instead of what I find most company's just delivering MMO's.
I would love a sandbox type SWtOR, SWG II is just completely ruined by $OE.

Seriously the WoW generation needs to stop associating "Sandbox" with "roleplaying". Sandbox just means you aren't pigeonholed into doing one thing or another.
Can there be raiding for "Uber" gear in a sandobx? Yep, Mendalorian armor, jetpacks, AV-21(before the exploit was known :P), acklay bones for acklay weapons, Night Sister shards/weapons, Krayt Pearls, etc.
Can there be crafting? Yep
Can there be politics? Yep
Can there be player cities? yep
Can there be PvP? Yep
ANYTHING can be in a sandbox game.
The only difference between a Themepark and a Sandbox game is that Sandbox gives you LOTS of options and themepark gives you none. Personally I would rather have options.

I agree these two terms don't mean the same thing, however people from the "Sandbox" crowd really do like "roleplaying" normally, because they seek this "immersion" factor, which many claim is tied directly into how believable a story is to them.
They're NOT the same, but often people who like one like the other

Would you rather have a SW:toR or a game like SWG but new?
I say ToR for the simple reason that SWG stepped into a fully developed time in the SW Mythos and thanks to it's downfall and an overall failure to drive that story forward as was originally planned kind of stagnated the game, and ruined a lot of that era for me. I'd hate to see that happen again, and even worse I'd hate to see them start SWG2 with the SWG Team because it would truly fail 100% of the time. Now if either can give us that sandbox game that SWG started as, I'd definately be willing to try both or either but I'd like to see more into the Old Republic.
Coming from someone who isn't a huge Star Wars fan and never played SWG... I would want SW: TOR mainly because i wouldn't trust the SWG team... also it just seems more appealing to me. Don't know if I would play it or not but i would actually check out...
I would love a sandbox type SWtOR, SWG II is just completely ruined by $OE.

WoW generation eh? That is why my sig calls out "I am an old school EQ player", and my bio page lists my RL age of 40. Couple that with the fact both me and the wife quit WoW at launch(I didnt make it thru 2 weeks of free 30 days) you couldnt be any more wrong if ya wanted to about me.
YOu know what else you are wrong about...MMO gaming. The things you call out like cities with politicss take gaming into Sim territory, and are NOT what mainstream folks want (IE the ones with the money to suport titles).
Your Uncle Owen sandbox play is niche, and even though I didnt like WOW, I sure as heck would play that a zillion times over before I would touch a litter box.
And as far as Uncle Owen specifically selling me things...why in the frack would I want that? Are you out of your God Damn mind? Seriously...you fracks need to STFU. Buying from Owen is no different than buying with RL cash. The only thing you earned was money to buy something, which any peckerhead can do farming 1st level mobs given enough time. YOu want top items, then you need to do top content.
I know I know...Owen can make it after I loot a part. "Frack you in the ear" did ya say? Because you can bet before us PvE folks bend over for Owen, in order to give him content, we will be looking for another game. Owen takes away from the PvE game regardless if it is building upon a looted part. We wanna loot the LightSabre of Arse Kicking +5 instead of Spacely Sprocket 122. It takes away from the thrill of adventuring.
And yes, in my native EQ there were some raid drops that required a smith. But the person had the option to be skilled enough themselves. They werent forced to deal with Owen, as everyone had their own Owen skills as secondary. Point being very few top end items are made with crafting in a good Pve...instead everything is dropped by mobs, or acquired thru questing.
Lastly...PvP....did I say there couldnt be PvP? No I believe my stance is open PvP isnt liked by PvE folks. Instead, if Devs wish to include it then it needs to be in the form of BGs/RvR. The launch of EQ showed that folks dont like being ganked. UO lost the far majority, of their playerbase, almost overnight when EQ launched. The EQ PvE servers had about an 8:1 player advantage over the PvP servers. Open PvP is a niche, the same as Owen is.
You sandboxers really need to accept your role as unwanted poster child of MMO gaming. Support the few games that do cater to ya, and hope for more. But in the meantime leave us PvE folks alone. We heard ya the first time with that tired arse litterbox talk, and if folks were interested in this much repetitive chit they would buy a cow.
Asking Devs to make AAA sandbox titles is like trying to get fine dining on a McDonalds dollar menu budget.
I swear Moaky.. Everytime I read your post I get to laughing to hard.. great way to wake up in the morning with coffee.. lmaooooo
GIVE EM HELL!!!
I need to keep and eye on you later, when games get closer to release.. I and a group of ADULT friends are looking for new adventures soon.. We all came from the old EQ1 days..
SWG was an innovation of our time that many will remember and still have hurt feelings. It wasn't the first to develop a no-level skill sandbox MMO by any means but it was the one with the biggest impact. However with all my memories and fun times, it is just that memories and fun times.
I trust Bioware to bring an innovation in story telling like no other studio produced before. I understand it won't be a true sandbox and that is alright. The point is you need to let go and let Bioware do what they do best, story telling.

Sorry but but SWG fell for alot of reasons it was already dying (with falling subs) long before your "Saboteur" did anything. SW:TOR is not SWG2 and I am thankfull for that, wish some of you SWG vets would understand that and stop trying to get Bioware to make a rehashed clone of a game that failed on its own the first time.
If you really want a SWG2 then go talk to SOE, maybe if you ask nicely and show a real interest in such a thing rather then the same old hate and flame they might even consider it.
SWG was my first MMORPG and my experience almost made me give up MMOs forever. Some of the many problems the game had:
Happens in every game. No it doesn't.I've never played any other game that required me to chane my gear and tactics on such a consistent basis. How often did this happen? Not much. Even then, it isn't a big deal as weapons and armor are easy to come by, unlike other games. Easy only if you had lots of money. And once you got the armour and weapon that was right for you it degraded to nothing in a few months and you had to start the whole process over again. Oh no, social interaction. I hope you didn't melt away. I was a part of guild you moron.I don't mind socially interacting. That's why I play MMOs. But I don't like being forced to sit around for 45 minutes waiting to do something because of a game mechanic. When a game that is played by so few requires almost complete dependence on others to do anything it becomes boring very quickly. Forgive me for not wanting to pay a monthIy subscription for that. You must not be familiar with how economies work. I love the "Greedy crafters" one liner always thrown around. I found crafters to be anything but that, and usually incredibly nice and helpful. You were a friggin jedi. It's not like you had to worry about replacing your stuff as frequently as the rest of us did. Most of you guys were able to solo what it took the rest of us to group and used your alts to sell the stuff you looted. Those of us who had to go thru the process of town hopping and dealing with the one million credits for a piece of armour that is worthless in two months are the ones who talk about the greedy crafters. Only found that to be an issue in highly populated areas, which you find in a lot of games. Bullshit. I've been playing World of Warcraft for 6 months and haven't rubberbanded once. Lag is extremely rare as well and I do PVP a lot.In SWG, I was rubberbanding and lagging constantly and it didn't matter if I was around people or just hanging in my house. I would rubberband just driving across open land. And I'm using the same computer for WOW as I did for SWG.SWG servers even in their supposed glory days never come close to the population that WOW servers have had for 4 1/2 years so there's no excuse. I agree with the first part, but the second part just makes you look stupid. Devs too busy playing Jedi? Are you kidding me? If anything, stuff didn't get fixed because the devs spent so much time re-writing the game instead of making it better. Once again you are blinded by your profession. Jedi got constant updates and fixes while professions like commando and smuggler got NOTHING. In fact, you guys got something new in almost every patch that came out. You must have really sucked at PvP then. The typical response from the person who played an alpha class. It's no wonder so many of you quit when your "I Win" button got taken away. As a non jedi I would get attacked by packs of jedi as soon as I got flagged.Another reason that so many of us were against putting jedi in the game in the first place because we knew that once the alpha class was created that it would come to be a requirment to PVP. Soon as your "god" mode got taken away with the NGE the majority of you who thought you were so damn good either quit or respec every patch. It was my first MMO too. I got by just fine. It's not their fault you couldn't figure things out on your own. When you make a game for others to play, you should at least give them a general idea of how the game works. YOu shouldnh't just throw them in and say "now go play." And your "figure it out yourself" attitude is very typical of that community. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.... OMG.. Hilarious. I've never found a better community than the one I found in SWG, and I think most people that played it agree. To each their own. Must have been my server. All I can say is that on Corbantis the community sucked. And if most people who played it thought the community was the best then why did they leave the game even before the NGE and CU?
Lucky for you, no other game gives that experience. For once we agree.
I was with SWG from Beta, I complained and whined and moaned, It went gold I joined a huge guild, I joined a smaller guild I opped for Stratics I got the Imperial Hat fixed I quit.
SWG was a great idea shat down the leg of a imbecile. The timeline sucked, the combat sucked, the classes sucked, the lag sucked, bump mapping made the gfx suck, JTL was a glorified java game which sucked. Yet everything else in the game was fantastic.
Races were fun, blasters, degredation, multicolour armour, dances, emotes, multi classing great ideas in a bad timeline in a poor enviroment.
Imperials had to break their necks grinding to get the measliest un upgradeable crappiest armour available, they couldnt get army issue weapons etc et ctec. Jedi made no sense in game, lightsabre restrictions made no sense in game. Melee classes outmatching ranged classes made no sense.
Placing the game in the space between the two films created a lack of player empowerment. The players actions couldnt alter the history. KOTOR has no history its blank slate, its decades before anything else happens. SWG2 would be a weak visual upgrade of a game that crippled itself trying to be visually appealing with no core mechanics.]
So in summary :- Yes we do want Old Republic so we can 'play' in Star Wars land instead of a large IRC room with pleasing star war based graphics.
i playing now more than 10 years: the old SWG was a benchmark, i still do not know any new titel who can beat this game. no wonder why peoples comparing other mmo's with it.
new mmorpg's are to simple and just to casual. now, they design games for 12 year olds, with 'high accesibility '(foolproof) gamemechanics..and, of course, with a optimized profitsystem. this is what they call innovativ lol.
new mmog's trying to entertain a player and let the player not play active the game: 'storyline focus' in a mmorpg... this is just ridiculous. maybe they think the modern playergeneration is to stupid and overchallenged, let em get passive, we do not want loose customers.
SWG was my first MMORPG and my experience almost made me give up MMOs forever. Some of the many problems the game had:
No it doesn't.I've never played any other game that required me to chane my gear and tactics on such a consistent basis. It was very rare that you actually had to change your gear or weapons because of a patch. You are over exaggerating. Easy only if you had lots of money. And once you got the armour and weapon that was right for you it degraded to nothing in a few months and you had to start the whole process over again. You didn't need lots of money to buy new armor, you are over exaggerating again. I can remember just before the NGE I bought 3 suits of maxed out recon armor for 200k each(the entire suit).
So few people played? I never had a problem finding people until SOE screwed the game over. Before that cities were packed. Here's a dirty little secret to stomp a lot of the rest of what you say. I was a Jedi for... 3 weeks. I was a Jedi for 3 weeks before the NGE hit and I quit. The vast majority of my time playing was as a Non-Jedi. So don't give me this "You don't understand, wah wah wah Jedi hurt me" attitude. Apparently you have never played a Feral Druid. Here, I'll give you an idea of how it words. "You are out of range" "You are out of range" "You are out of range" "You are out of range" "You are out of range" "You are out of range" "You are out of range" Even though my head is half way up their ass. No lag my ass.
Once again you are blinded by your profession. Jedi got constant updates and fixes while professions like commando and smuggler got NOTHING. In fact, you guys got something new in almost every patch that came out. False assumptions, read above.
The typical response from the person who played an alpha class. It's no wonder so many of you quit when your "I Win" button got taken away. Soon as your "god" mode got taken away with the NGE the majority of you who thought you were so damn good either quit or respec every patch. More false assumptions, read above. Not very wise to base entire arguments and personal attacks on assumptions.
When you make a game for others to play, you should at least give them a general idea of how the game works. YOu shouldnh't just throw them in and say "now go play." And your "figure it out yourself" attitude is very typical of that community. Sure, there could have been a little more guidance, but half the fun is actually figuring it out, not having it handed to you on a silver platter.
To each their own. Must have been my server. All I can say is that on Corbantis the community sucked. And if most people who played it thought the community was the best then why did they leave the game even before the NGE and CU? Well first of all, there are more things to consider than the community on whether you like and want to keep playing the game. Beyond that, SWG was doing just fine before the CU, and was actually recovering before the NGE. "Everyone left" after the NGE. www.mmogchart.com/Chart2.html

They're NOT the same, but often people who like one like the other
Personally I would prefer a game made by bioware in the timeline of the current movies as this is what I have come to know and enjoy.
SW:TOR? No. SWG2? Yes.
i.e. a GOOD sandbox.

SWG2
So far i have heard nothing that would make me interested in SWTOR. I really hope something will change that soon, since im a big SW fan.
Wise opinion, thats what I think too.
Currently Playing: World of Warcraft
No really.
i playing now more than 10 years: the old SWG was a benchmark, i still do not know any new titel who can beat this game. no wonder why peoples comparing other mmo's with it.
new mmorpg's are to simple and just to casual. now, they design games for 12 year olds, with 'high accesibility '(foolproof) gamemechanics..and, of course, with a optimized profitsystem. this is what they call innovativ lol.
new mmog's trying to entertain a player and let the player not play active the game: 'storyline focus' in a mmorpg... this is just ridiculous. maybe they think the modern playergeneration is to stupid and overchallenged, let em get passive, we do not want loose customers.
Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
