This is what I strongly believe as well. My bet is that FF14 will be to FF11 what Aion is to Lineage 2. So while not the same world they will share strong links and similarities while playing quite differently. Most grownups that used to love FFXI in it's heyday want to actually play a game and not grind to eventually play the game some months later.
It won't be the same kind of progression as FFXI, I'd advise to forget that dream. Instead of having time fillers just maybe we'll get content hopefully in some form we've yet to see from anyone.
But it's all speculation.
Is this truely your bet or is this what you want FFXIV to be?

Mr Blood and I win this was just answered from the conference:
Hashimoto responds, "As with WOW, they're aimed at the casual user, we're aiming for more casual users. However, we don't want to make a copy of WOW, we want to be unique."
And..
"FFXI was originally designed based on party battles. With FFXIV, we'd like to have content for solo players, as well as extremely large battles for players to play together."
I wanted a oldschool final fantasy... SINGLE PLAYER game. This is the game I would play when somebody melted my face in a MMORPG and now they are even taking my escape away from me!
uh, just play the other one, that ws also anounced.....
A MMO final fantasy is not a final fantasy its a infinite fantasy. I play final fantasy to go from start of game to the END not to a infinite end. If Final Fantasy XI had a ending, I would have played it.
Um, not sure what you are saying here. but there are two FF games coming out, a traditional FF, and this one, that is a MMO.

Well... If the "aiming more toward the casual audience" = "fast leveling to end-game with little depth or meaningful content along the way", then that has decreased my interest as well.
If it simply means leveling will be more soloable so people can get to the more group-oriented content without having to wait for parties, etc... then I think it could work, because I think that's what they've been working toward with the changes in FFXI.

If that's the case, then they'll be shooting themselves in the foot in terms of any kind of community building. Myriad other MMOs have already proven out that if people can play solo... they'll play solo, group content be damned. In fact, they'll complain that the group content is "unfair" because they shouldn't be "forced to group" to do anything.

I don't think so, my gut feeling tells me this will be just as rewarding and fun a game as FFXI but just not as painful. I don't think they'd want to follow the WoW model to a T that would be just plain boring and stupid on their part. And SE people aren't stupid, so far. :P
edit: They've just said they will be implementing a lot of new systems. This might be ways of progression that encourages all types of play but doesn't force either.

A: I cannot say too much, but we hope to have battles that are many vs. many and many vs. one.
Interesting.
Oooohhh...
For FFXIV, the keyword that we've been using is "The Growth and Development of the Character." We will have the same type of storytelling and high-quality graphics. We also want to expand and create new in-game systems. The player can grow & develop in a more natural way without putting too much weight on the player. We will expand the job system to make it fairly different from the one in FFXI.

This is it right here the quote. This has been tried and tested. Gamers take the least path of resistance. If they can solo it they will, which makes it even harder to find a group. People say finding groups in FFXI was hard, Ill tell you whats hard try finding a group in a solo friendly game, its darn near impossible.

Some FFXIV info... Doesn't look old-school at all.
* Final Fantasy XIV appears to be the primary focus. FF XIV will be coming to PC and PS3, but they are also considering other hardware, including Microsoft.
* Regarding ties to FFXI, although some of the races will be similar the world will be very different. They have made the races similar in XIV to XI so that XI players can related better to the characters.
* Development will continue for FFXI and will not be ditched with the launch of FFXIV. They have a year planned for FFXI development still in the works.
* Action or turn-based? They will not discuss combat at this time.
* Like with WoW, they want to aim the game at casual users.
* Content for solo players and large-scale battles at launch.
* Worldwide simultaneous launch for PS3 and PC, with English, Japanese, German, and French supported.
* Servers set up that are cross-platform and cross-region, they finalize during beta testing to see how balance and player experience is.
* Regarding feedback from FFXI players, yes and they will continue to seek feedback moving into beta.
* Separate communities for XI and XIV or try to move subscribers over to XIV? They hope people will play both.
* Localize in Spanish? No, but it will be considered if there is a demand. They will do market research.
* Any MMO elements that will help improve on the genre? They want to make the best Final Fantasy game available, which is why they decided to make it a MMORPG. They want to implement a lot of new systems that haven't been seen in past MMOs.
* Why not just evolve FFXI? FFXI was designed for the PS2, then moved to PC and 360, porting to new technology would take too much, they want to create something new.
* Yesterday's trailer was pre-rendered with parts running on the in-game engine.
As if there aren't enough grouping games out there already. Find some other way to socialize besides grouping please.
Added Note: There have been plenty of MMOs that claimed to have solo content. What they failed to mention is that it was boring, tedious and unrewarding and that is before you even compare it to group and raid content.
Added Note: I think SWTOR will be the first and likely only MMO to have solo content that is actually fun and worth doing.
With PvE raiding, it has never been a question of being "good enough". I play games to have fun, not to be a simpering toady sitting through hour after hour of mind numbing boredom and fawning over a guild master in the hopes that he will condescend to reward me with shiny bits of loot. But in games where those people get the highest progression, anyone who doesn't do that will just be a moving target for them and I'll be damned if I'm going to pay money for the privilege. - Neanderthal
"Another very important concept that takes a different direction from FFXI, for FFXIV we want to make it so the player can choose to play solo, in a party, 40 minutes, all-day... there will be content for ALL of those play styles and systems for all of those play styles."
ouch. this one hurt. If you can solo all day and progress through the game, well then there wil be very limited grouping.
