There is not a huge demand for a game like this and this ruleset in the states.
I agree. The huge skill grind + open pvp with full loot + map with newbie areas very exposed to high level players - is never going to attract many new players.
And while I have no problem with the open pvp with full loot, it seems like the easiest thing they could change that would make the game enjoyable to a larger audience. A few sensible tweaks to their ridiculous alignment system wouldn't hurt either.
yeah, 'cause as we can see, EVE is suffering horribly. /sarcasm
Seriously, though.,.it's not the premise of the game that's at fault, but the implementation. The REAL reason we don't see more open PVP / Full loot games is this: today's MMO developers are after the WoW playerbase. They don't want to actually take a chance on something new, they want to make the same recycled SHIT over and over again in a weak attempt to create the next "big", mainstream cash-cow.
ANYONE who reads forums dedicated to the MMORPG genre has seen the discontent and griping...and knows full well that there is a huge opportunity out there for those who dare to sieze it....as long as they don't fuck it up as bad as AV has.
Man.....when Wharg0ul is throwing in the towel on a game that he's supported for so long, that's really a sign that it's screwed the pooch.
( that's meant as a sign of respect there, Wharg0ul )

Companies want to make money. What they dont want to do is simply break even or make a small profit. They want a share of the market and there is nothing wrong with that. Most of the whiners and cryers are the same people making the same tired threads. Eve has a decent player base and thats a global number so it still pales to a straight up pve game with some pvp. I am hoping MO does well but will it>? Who knows only time will tell.
I am simply saying that if you are waiting on the states to bail you out because you made a subpar already small niche game then you are insane. AV is banking on this and they will fail just as MO would if they were counting on this market. American gamers also have the attention span of a fly and jump from game to game without much thought. At the end of the day when a EU company that launched in the EU and failed there and thinks america will be their saving grace needs a flogging helmet and quit smoking crack.
LoL...another "business major" telling us all about how to run a "company". Man these types make me laugh. You ever consider that maybe some game devs have integrity, and make games for the love of the genre, much as any other artist, and are simply looking to turn a profit and not necessarily make mega-bucks??
You might as well tell Clive Barker and Steven king to start writing crotch novels, and give up their genre, since it won't reach the largest possible audience.
AV will "fail" because they lured NA players into buying the game, and then six months later tell us that we will need to either buy the client again or pay a transfer fee (and lose our stuff, our coin, who knows what else) in order to play on NA servers. They lured us in, we paid their bills, and now we are getting FUCKED for our loyalty and support.
The game simply wouldn't still exist if not for the NA players....we make up the vast majority of the game's population. We have financed it this far. Now we are getting the stiff one, and guess what? We're not taking it.
Yes, I'm raving a bit here, but I'm PISSED. I don't take being betrayed lightly.
It s bloody pathetic, I was going to re sub when NA server opened, no way in hell will I now. I m sure alot of future subs they could have had will go boom now.
ROFL...I have to say this is so funny listening to all the bitching which is coming from you NA folks, as normal many of you guys were HELL bent of being the first to hit the EU servers, irrelevant of the possible implications or even the finacial consequences and with many war cries of we are gonna pwn, bs, bs, bs, the EU server. Sadly some of the bragging and language coming from NA folks on the DF forums was nothing short of ridiculous, prehaps this will bring many of them folks back down to earth a little and make you sit up and smell the coffee.
Now the sensible NA people have kept their money in their pockets or should I say the ones who failed to F5 fast enough to buy the game when it went on sale, fortunately they can now thank them selfs really lucky indeed, because they now have the power to make or break this game in NA for sure. I hope that they do so in a rather humbling way this time, if infact if they even bother at all.
I would imagine that many EU players are greatful that so many NA people did get ingame because you saved many other EU players from wasting their cash. I'll tell you what is bloody pathetic, it's all the whining about having to pay twice, now thats absolutely hilarious.
On a more serious note, it is the gamer weather from NA, Hong Kong, or any other part of the world who is suffering and there needs to be a world wide law against games companies shafting the dedicated gamers all the time, if this happened in a local shop or whilst buying a well known brand there would be outrage. So I would like to see AV be sensible and allow these gamers to migrate to the NA server when it goes live, or at the very least give them all free gaming time equivalent should they have to re-purchase the game for a second time, this would be the correct and moral thing to do and also give players who have joined guilds from the EU and other places to migrate with their friends.

Not telling you how to run a comoany but if you start one with the intention of not making money then you are stupid plain and simple. And you are butt hurt over a game. A poor game by shady devs and poorly run company and yet you are still butt hurt which means you are naive and thats ok. Some people make poor uninformed decisions and the people who bought and supported DF after knowing everything that this company has done deserve it.
I'm just going to roll my eyes, have a laugh at your expense, and resist the urge to tell you to do something to your genitals that would probably get me banned. (again...)
Anyone not believing now that all they want is to steal your money only deserves to be scammed.
Yup, this is the last gasp for some quick cash before the announcement of the server(s) being closed down.
If they hadn't changed their web-site from the
1 character per SERVER
to
1 character per ACCOUNT
A fan of Aventurine might try to argue that this was as they intended all along. With that particular change coming shortly before the announcement of the NA server... it should be painfully obvious this is a scam.
<Mod edit> Paying for "server transfers" was one of the reasons I un-subbed WoW - my friends kept changing server, and I simply didn't have the cash to put maybe 3 MB of character data onto another computer.
I mean really, it's a simple cut and paste command (or equivalent in some database software), and shouldn't cost the player money to do. While time limits are acceptable between shifts (in-game economy, people!) the price on the outside is unjustified.
And while I can understand having the NA servers being done by some other publisher (for God knows why reasons) and having to compensate for them through cold hard cash for doing so... actually, let's go back to that God knows why.
Why the hell are they involving more publishers? Are they trying to divide their profits exponentially or something? Ugh. All they need is to hire some people, maybe three tech-sperts, to set up and maintain a bunch of computers as servers. Ta-da. I don't see why they have to have all of this crap involving licensing and NA vs. EU client bullshit.
But hell, I was *thinking* about buying the game, you know, if they had a simple freaking "BUY THE DAMN GAME" button on their site, but no! Apparently, they are still in Beta. Oh well!
(lucky me, no frustrating Hackers and generally difficult and dull gameplay for me, then.)
I am playing EVE and it's alright... level V skills are a bit much.
I mean really, it's a simple cut and paste command (or equivalent in some database software), and shouldn't cost the player money to do. While time limits are acceptable between shifts (in-game economy, people!) the price on the outside is unjustified.
The fee that Blizzard charges is outrageous for the actual amount of work involved in executing a transfer - but then again they get $15 a month from you generally without their support people needing to lift a finger... I think the high price is likely 80% deterrent factor. Players hopping from server to server willy nilly would be a pain for them.
In the case of the Darkfall EU to NA server transfer, the two databases will be on different continents and are unlikely to have a mechanism set up for transferring data - because other than this initial one-way promised transfer, it's not something they'll allow again.
Even so, it will probably just be a matter of someone in Aventurine downloading and deleting the data from their database, emailing/mailing/ftp'ing it to the US license holders, and them uploading that information.
And Aventurine will probably need to hand over the money they received from players purchasing those accounts.
is normal because there will be other publisher and u cant acces the US servers from EU or the EU from US
They should have said they would be charging from the get go.
They didn't.
It's not the money.
It's the feeling as if Av is scamming people.
Soul caliber of intellect right here folks. It took this for him to realize AV sucks and so does Tasos. I followed Darkfall for like 7 years and seen so much deceit, lies, and bullshit that I would never give them a cent or any of my valuable time.
Goodluck to all the NA that purchase this shitty Heretic like game. No pun it plays just like Heretic, download it, try it.
This damn game totally reeks of scam..everybody better stay away as far a possible.
And to those idiots who think this is common practice for MMOs...it is NOT!
Yes there are two different clients in most MMOs but usually they get released at the SAME TIME. So you can choose yours and buy it once. Selling one client and promising free transfers...and then later switching to "oh sorry u gotta buy the game again lol" is nothing else then betrayal on the customers.
It is a freaking joke and in the case of any other product a million lawyers would crush it to pieces. Obviously you can do whatever you want in the MMO business today.
Mind you i live in Europe and i am not ranting because i fell betrayed. I was patient enough not to buy Dorkfail and wait some time to see what is going to happen and if it is worth the bucks. Boy am i happy they did not get a single cent from me!
After following this for months i think of nothing else than DF to be one of the biggest money scam ops in MMO history. Something on the scale of Dark&Light but with a little more brain behind it....but obviously not much brain. Those recent ninja edits to the official FAQ site alone are epic.
Some guy on Forumfall described it pretty good.:
This company is so dumb they are not even able to setup their smokescreen correctly.
I would not wonder if Tardos and his scamcrew vanish around the end of the year after they sucked customers and investors dry of money.
I don't post that often here, but this move has really made me angry.
There is no excuse for this. None. They are just stealing money from the only people who were willing to support them while they completed the game, it's just outright theft, and I hope it turns round to bite them hard.

Yes! How dare a company launch a localized version of their client in their own region. And then HAVE THE AUDACITY to allow anyone on the internet to purchase it with "EU VERSION" blatantly written all over the place. Then announce that the American version will be out soon....AND TRY TO SELL IT TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE.
Such a blatant exploit of human stupidity. DAMN THEM!!
WoW nerds beware, I come equipped with lazers and anti-QQ missiles. If you mess with me, I will $%£@ you.
Am I the only person from the US who understood that Darkfall was marketed to the EU. With the US servers coming and having to buy a new copy of Darkfall makes sense. This is the same way with most P2P games that require a box purchase.
Yea, I found it pretty normal, though they did promise FREE transfers, so the p2p transfer is bull.
Normal..? You guys new? NO mmorpg since UO has ever had this requiment. I cannot think of one game that does..! (you guys work for Aventurine?)
But that isn't the reason so many people are pissed. Tasos himself had mention that when Darkfall was release, everyone was welcome to buy it. As the release of the NA server would be months away, those who chose to do so, could play on EU-1 until then. It was after the release, they said they would make transferes available, but not everyone cared. They just wanted to re-roll a new char on that server, as that was the reason they bought the game anyway.
Yet, DFO shills and trolls keep wanting everyone to forget that, as most of the people have canceled and really don't care enough to get on the boards and express their anger. They flat out lied and are looking for every way to make up for paying $100k on a NA server. It's all marketing and they are porposely selling their current subscribers down the road, for the roll of the dice on newer, younger American players who fit the "Lord of the Flies" syndrom.
"No they are not charity. That is where the whales come in. (I play for free. Whales pays.) Devs get a business. That is how it works."
I like how some people are trying to excuse having to buy a new copy because "you can transfer for a fee after 3 months" well well if lets say in a best case scenario the transfer fee is 15USD, the real cost of transfer is actually 60USD if you decide to wait for the transfers (15USD transfer fee + 3 X 15USD for 3 months sub), so in any of the two options (buy a new copy or wait for the transfer) NA players are being ripped off their money with the apparently "cheaper" option actually being the more expensive.
Wowee wow wow wow...does Aventurine's marketing strategies just suck! Ther marketing ploys are just a big middle finger to all the consumers out there, kinda like the game! hehe. I'm glad I dumped this game after a amonth, shortest amount of time I ever played an MMO and I didn't quit because of the ganking or the full loot, the game just plain SUCKED! But the jokes on me because I resubbed after the first month only to quit a week later. But I have to thank Darkfail for one thing, it allowed me to skill up in the most necessary of skills...Letting Go :P

I personally think that the game hasn't been cutting it on sbuscriptions.
Av is trying to get as much out of "box" sales as they can.
Three months later they can get a little more out of those that didn't quit and were willing to wait threee months.
I don't see what they need a publisher for.
There is no marketting. There is no box, christ you download the game through a torrent!
Av has the contract with GNi so there's no server needs that publisher would fullfil.
They only need billing and account services. You don't need a publisher for that.
What do they need a publisher for?
I think it's BS.
