Go look at a magazine rack, right now... and tell me that the majority of magazines for women aren't focused on sex. The rest that aren't talking about sex like a BradyGames Strategy guide, are telling women what they should look like, and how to do it... usually to attract men.
So it's actually the other way around OP. Women are playing Aion to hunt the men... in more ways than one.

"HOW SHE OUTSMARTED A BRUTAL RAPIST"  Such an edgy but great headline....generally Cosmo and other magazines like Vanity and Vogue just have great catchy headlines

Besides, this particulairy one would be fun to exploit for a story in an MMO, similair stories do happen you see ^^

Well they mislead with headlines like that... a BRUTAL rapist is worse than a kind, gentle and caring rapist... cause you know, it's all about tact.

Often those stories, whenever I read them, have some sort of frightening yet compassionate side of these brutal rapists in the story

Its a horror with a grain of romance....and you keep reading ^^

Actually you are correct.  I remember an interview on G4 TV with an Aion art director and he was asked why the characters were so feminine and pretty looking.  The answer was interesting.

He first said the obvious by stating such is normal in Asia, but then when prompted as to why the game's look wasn't updated to the western norm he said to the effect of, "Because the anime genre has shown us that such characters are extremely popular, expecially with female audiences." (paraphrased)

It would seem this strategy is working, for Aion does have a large female following.  Only time and subs will tell here, but things do look good in this regard.

It's a simple fact, girls like to be pretty, even when they are trying to crush you into the ground.  And if they get to crush a pretty guy into the dirt, then it is even more fun.

Thank you for getting the original point in what has turned into a very messy thread lol...

See what happens when you go away for a few hours?? :P

lolwhat? you mean nice female models appeal more to female players?

you guessed wrong. guess why 95% of gamers base in mmos is male. then notice ALL box covers of those games.

yeah. a female character on each of them. with less clothing than usual as well. yeah....

if you think that ordinary female is very invited by some bitchy girls on gameboxes you dont know girls at all.

No... I said that Aion apparently has suceeded in attracting a lot of girls as fans... I thought this was obvious in the OP that you yourself quoted? Makes me smile how people ignore what you write around here and answer questions that were only asked in their heads :P

Also, the 95% made up percentage that you state as fact is very out of date.

More people should be like me... every girl I date is playing console games by the end of the week and MMO's by the end of the month. I'm good for the MMO business I think.

me on the other hand I had fun with the game, but it seemed lack luster and just same ole same ole so I will be more than likely passing on the great hype that is Aion for now.

That is awesome. Being a girl, and somewhat like that, I would love to meet her in game. :)

I'm really looking forward to Aion, and I do not appreciate all the stereotyping of women that is going on here. I've played MMOs for a while, and I throughly enjoy them. I'm not talking about "playing dress-up", I'm talking about actually playing the game. There are a lot of women who can, and will, kill you in PvP. There are a lot of men who can also. There is no difference between the genders when it comes to playing a game, the only thing that's different is the skill level of the players. Women aren't any better or worse at gaming than men, nor should they be any less welcome into the games.

For the most part reason why we don't come out about it cause a lot of guys harass us about it. Frankly, even in FPS I played in I couldn't tell anyone I was a girl cause I watched one other be on top and telling the guys that she was a girl and totally got flamed on by the guys in the servers. It shows half the male population can't grow up and see that most of us female can be very well talented in game. As for Aion reason why its probably picking up on half the female population that plays MMO is because of the PvP not due to being sexy or whatever. Yes females cause drama. I don't know how many guilds I was in cause older women picked fights with me cause I'm in a younger generation then they are. Heck I even had a women in her early 30's pushed me from the guild she was leading cause she was afraid of some 18 year old kid that hitted on her a lot would turn from her. All I'm saying you can't sit there and say your the best and such because of what sex you are. Its more about the maturity of things not because we want to make head turns.

I play female characters because they're beautiful and I enjoy beautiful things although I do have a sexist classification mentality in the way that if I role a healer it's female, rangers are male, tanks are male and assassins are female. I have never rolled a caster really but the ones I did role were female. Then again it might not even be "sexist" but a preference for appearence with certain playstyles. Either way love you! keep playing. Where a lot of these nerds enjoy sausage fests I on the other hand do not.

I never thought of female as a lesser gamer, not sure where that idea came from, never noticed my wife getting hit on in a game either; she always plays a female avatar. I also tend to role the gender of my avatar based on its class or the back story I put to it (yep im geek enoguh to have a back story usualy) I dont think its sexist but I come from the age of games where you didn't have a gender choice in the character typicaly casters where female, scout types when both ways favoring female more offten than not and tanks where almost always male unless they where hybrid tanks (had some mojo to em) in which case they where typicaly female. That prefrence is not a prefrence of gender role but rather a matter of taste in RP at least for me.

I dont doubt there are dumn asses in games hell they are every where in the same light I dont much care for thosue that hide who or what they are/want to be because of fear either no offence but you would do more to correct the problem if you would play as what you want I am assuming thats a female avatar. When some fetus makes an ass of him self deal with him, ignore him, report him, emasculate him, etc. but dont delete your char and role a male avatar . . . been teaching my sister this go ahade and make an ass of your self to her in a game she can more than handle her self. And the asses dont only target femle or what they think are females the ass hats out there find ways to anoy every one in some way thats what ass hats do but dont wory they get theres sonner or latter typicaly sooner than later.

Actually one of the best gamers I've seen in mmos was a female.  She was a complete asshole but far as her ability in the game she was unmatched.

Still an asshole though.  Always wanted me in the group even though I made it fairly obvious I couldn't stand her.  I think the most amusing moment with her was when I was complaining to another guildie about her because she was barking for me to join her group again in guild chat and I forgot to make it a reply to the guildie's tell and ended up telling the whole guild at once what a pretentious bitch she was.

She flipped out asking repeatedly who I was talking about.  I felt like a deer frozen in the headlights of an oncoming car. One of my more amusing "oops" moments in a game.

Gotta say though, the woman could game.

    1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

You really think that boys don't follow girls?

I need to tell that to every nightclub I have ever worked in that they had it wrong then. ;)

Nightclubs attract the scum of western society, slightly more even than mmo's.  The young, the weak and the stupid.

So, when you aren't trolling around nightclubs you are in your favorite mmo?...............................

........ I love nightclubs.  I've been going to them since I was 16.  I even got the chance to work at some pretty top shelf nightclubs in my day.  Bartending at the better ones pay me $500~$800 bucks a night.  (2 days I worked only), ... and the rest of my time, I was able to log onto and play my favorite mmo.  And I'm a hybrid of East meets West dude so don't lump me into this bullshit stereotype you just created.  (because nightclubs exist in the East too you fucking dumbass... =)

Truth is that boys DO follow girls.  And, I have seen women wreak havoc in linkshells in FFXI during my time in that game.  Girls had the power to completely cause mega-drama.  It's like they are never happy unless they are causing some kind of shit-storm.  Stolen accounts, linkshells completely breaking, trickery, whoring themselves out for loot.... being the center of attention in vent channels.

So, with all the entertainment in this thread, I'm looking forward to playing Aion and seeing just how much estrogen can shape the overall feel of gameplay.

G.I.R.L.s neaver heard that one before lol.

So people actualy assume that the gender of an avatar is the same as the gender of the player? dont you kids remimber when gender wasnt an option? you play a mage its a female usualy scantly clad though flat chested and had pointy ears, you play a tank its a male always hairy as hell and riped, you play a ranger and it depends but more offten than not it was a stacked human  female . . . in fact male avatars where prity much only the tanks some times the old gray scorc or rouge like scout type if there was one but ya typicaly male == meat shield female == caster, healer, ranger, scout, etc.

I pretty much suck at PVP and i have found females to be quite vicious at it, probably the only time i can remember beating a female they made sure to come back later on and hand me my ass in PVP lol..it was funny, i think girls actually hold a vendetta if they lose and take names down haha.

I am a girl and I find this thread hilarious to the highest degree. I am sick and tired of people trying to argue that there is a demonstrable difference between men and women on the gaming front, or on most other fronts as well, for that matter. Men and women both have groups that want complex crafting, that want easy killing of large groups, that want massive overworld PVP, or anything else you can think of. Women are diverse just like men, and we want similar things.

The problem lies not in the reality of things, but in the mentality of young men in the gaming world. So many of them are social rejects not because they play games, but because they are weird or boring in real life. They think girls will not like them in real life because girls do not like them in real life. They imagine a girl playing a game that will like them because she plays a game too, and that girl does not exist. If you are unpleasant to a girl in the real world, you would be just as unpleasant to the same girl online. There is this myth that developed when games were ONLY for these social rejects, but this is no longer the case. People from all walks of life play games, and it now is just, to me, like people that enjoy chess or camping. It is something they do. That girl at the party is more likely to play games than you think. If you get out of your house and go to said party, and talk to people, you might learn how to talk to girls. Then, they might like you more.

We exist, we are in all games, and we are people just like you, and just like the people you know in the real world. Playing a game because you think girls are playing it is silly, and you are even less likely to get a girl in a game than in the real world. Think about that.

I will say, though, sex sells, and the character models in Aion are hot hot hot. That might be a decent secret weapon on its own if GameGuard did not counteract that pull.

"Gamers will no longer buy the argument that every MMO requires a subscription fee to offset server and bandwidth costs. It's not true — you know it, and they know it." —Jeff Strain, co-founder of ArenaNet, 2007

Normally, I don't even have to let anyone know.  Doesn't take them long to deduce that for them on their own.  I love PvP but I'll be the first to admit I'm not that good at it.

    1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

    2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

    3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

Aion's not so secret marketing weapon -- it appeals to women in their potential player base.  If they can grow their female player proportion, it means their overall population/market/revenue will be higher.  This is a good thing for anyone who wants the game to be successful (i.e. make money on an ongoing basis).  And thanks to the OP for making this point, although his point got derailed from page 1.

But Aion will have to keep those female players.

Which means that most of the people in this thread need to chill and try not to be such amazingly flaming asshats on either side.  Because you know, AS A WOMAN, I really despise guys who make drama around me being female.  It not my fault, guys -- you do it to your nyerking selves.

Women are more than half of online gamers.  Higher in casual games, lower in MMOs, and likely even lower in PvP environments, although I have no proof of that except personal observation in old SWG, Eve, and Aion.

I was playing war games before D&D white box came out -- serious multi-week turn based military simulations and such.  There were not many "girl" gamers in the 70s, and we got crap for being butch and unfeminine sometimes.  Yes, for most of you, this means I'm at least old enough to be your mom.

So now, women in gaming get crap for not being good enough players, regardless of evidence.  And *too* "girly."  Can't win with y'all, can we?

And for the most part, it's because we stand out to men with insecurity around gender roles, relationships and so on.  There are *lots* of men who enjoy playing with women, can be comrades in arms without striking some weird 'tude about it.  But there are other guys who will come in and accuse the women of creating drama because they can't handle their own internal feelings about being around the opposite sex for whatever reason.

If you want the game to succeed, try to avoid being a troll, flamer, asshat, and otherwise a burden on your community, and you will make life easier for the rest of us who just want to have fun excelling at the game.  Men or women.

Social griefers are just a drag on the game.  Get over yourselves.

Couple of things

    1) its not just the dumb ass boys at fault here (please dont call them men I had work for that title and so do they) young girls make just as much of an ass out of them selves as do the males though granted boys tend to excel at ass hatting if you will but its jsut that ass hattery not really a sexist thing in fact this whole flame storm while quite amusing is just that a troll, they where just looking to piss you off for fun if it wasnt your gender it would be somthing else.

    2) gamers dont go outside so they cant meet you at the party unless said party is during the weekly maintance.

    3) Yes sex sales it doesn't just sale to men though so dont go thinking your all high and mighty just because most men will gladly admit they first noticed the game because of the clevage on teh marketing add while most females dont seem to like to admit to being attracted by some base factor such as sexuality.

    4) And there are demonstratable diffrences between all demographics in terms of gaming and well every thing else though granted they are all equivlent they are unique i.e. you can target market a gender, a religion, a political view, a race, a sexual prefrence even a favorit color it wont hit 100% never does but it will hit the majority of the target. But yes you can also target multiple markets, just wanted to point out that thogh I dont think Aion did they could have targeted teh female player base woudl that have had an affect on the male player base . . . nope if it did it wouldn't be a positive one in order to target a demographic specificaly you typicaly adversly impact the inverse demographic i.e. if I market to republicans odds are I am gona play hell getting democrats to sign up, if I market to female odds are males are going to feel the product wasn't intended for them so I think its clear that Aion is trageting as wide a market as they can I would guess 13 to dead no gender specific.
