Fact of the matter is, post 35 you get less than 30% of your level from questing. This is from my personal experience as a ranger on Triniel, Look up the character Phaine and refer to my xfire if you doubt me. Aion is a great game for some people, the pvp had potential. It is definitely going to appeal to the folks that enjoy large scale RvR that is for damn sure. That being said... it is a very nasty grind post 35, and many would say its a nasty grind post 26. This and this alone will bleed customers. Is it a big deal? I dunno. For me personally it was a game breaker, I can grind for short spurts no problem. I managed to 4 box my shamans from 1 - 80 in wow and that was an unbelievable grind I barely made it through, I played EQ1 till about 60 before throwing in the towel, and I have a level 102 on sword of the new world. I can grind when needed... but I simply couldnt handle the format for which Aion threw at me. 12 hours plus per level at 35 with exponential growth killed my enjoyment, and has led me to move back to EvE. I will say Aion is a great game for those that can muscle through the grind... but anyone who has a toon post 35 would be lying to say this isnt the biggest grind thats been released in a main stream MMO in many many years.
If you enjoyed the game and left because of the grind I might suggest you to wait till they add the patch that boosts lots of quests from 25(?) to 50.
We got 100k xp per kill in silver mane village at 37 (97,000), 38(100,000) and a lvl 33 (who got 50k xp) so I need 26 M to lvl up. so that's 268 mobs if I decided to grind it out with 2 other people. I saw a lvl 38 sorc just solo it, I guess he was getting about 250k per kill, so don't think that's a lot of mobs on grinding. Also that's a quest to collect 100 silver mane hair, so I am doing a quest plus getting nice xp.. is it a grind?
back to EVE? so you like to grind on real time?? you should just say so.
There's a quest where you actually have to collect 100 of something? What's the drop rate?
Damn I thought collecting 20 of something in WoW was bad.

how can you take that review seriously with a statement like this: "Because of the relatively short amount of time I've had with Aion, and, to be honest, a general apathy toward playing any further, I've not yet experienced the so-called "PvPvE"
I actually get what the reviewer is referring to. For some people (myself included), it just wasn't worth going through 25 levels to get to the so called 'meat' of the game when the beginning was boring. When you're playing the game and the only reason you're still trudging through is because everyone says it gets better, that can't be very fun.

Sorry but I wouldn't expect a review like that say on gamespot, a review that the OP linked would be normal if it was posted here or some similar site.
The gms/moderator here did a better review of aion then 1up and for me it's not a site as popular as gamespot, ecc.

Well the main feauture of Aion is the pvpve system, so he played Aion and didnt even play what the game is built on. He shouldnt of reviewed the game then if thats the case.

At least he was being honest there. Part that gets me is where he boldfaced lied about running out of quests. We know it happens at points but not in the level range he's talking about nor to the level he talks about. He went completely off of what he read some others complain about rather than experience for itself. Maakes you wonder how much he actually did play of the game at all.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.
You can get to level 20 in 2 solid days of playing (which I would expect from someone being payed to play it). Did the reviewer bother to level up more then 1 character even?
I cant believe this would get published without the reviewer even playing 1/2 of the levels. Hell, at level 20 you finally get access to Stigma (aka talents).
how can you take that review seriously with a statement like this: "Because of the relatively short amount of time I've had with Aion, and, to be honest, a general apathy toward playing any further, I've not yet experienced the so-called "PvPvE"

While you are correct about the reviewer (any decent review should judge the game entirely, not just initially) I've said it once and I'll say it again, it's a mistake in the design of the game that it doesn't expose you to the PvPvE part until you've leveled halfway to the level cap. I don't care how long it takes, everyone plays at different speeds. I mean, yea, it may not take that long but when I go to Aion's website and look at server statistics, a majority of players are still 20 or below, and the game has been out almost a month.
You're average player isn't going to grind straight through just to get to level 25. They are going to take their time, smell the roses, see what the game has to offer. The point is you don't even get to see all that the game has to offer for some time.
Look at it this way, there are two types of players (predominately). The one who enjoys PvE and one who enjoys PvP. The one that enjoys PvE will enjoy the 1-25 and then the abyss smacks them in the face. They can still enjoy PvE from this point, but in reality they are going to have to be exposed to PvP to properly advance.
The other player (pvp) is playing the game specifically because they want to PvP but they have to trudge through 25 levels of PvE to even get to that point. Because of Aion's linear design, especially early on, you don't give the player options in gameplay.
Just this one line from the last paragraph says it all about this reviewer: then what hope is there for your average World of Warcraft subscriber.
If he wanted to be taken with any seriousness then he shouldn't have added that line.
It just goes to show how lazy some have become these's days.
I think with any MMO these days, it's success is based on how many subscribers it can get. In order to compete with WoW (if that's the intent and I think all these games are trying to do that in some form), you need to draw some of it's playerbase away from WoW and into your game. A developer sees that 3.5 million number of NA subscribers and wants some of that pie.
Well, I just saw this thread and the review and it boggles the mind.
And as fond as I am of my gnome warlock, the slender, angelic beauties that inhabit Aion's shattered world are a welcome sight.
Because of the relatively short amount of time I've had with Aion, and, to be honest, a general apathy toward playing any further, I've not yet experienced the so-called "PvPvE" endgame that lies in the central Abyss zone. It sounds like a genuinely fascinating mix of competitive multiplayer and co-operative raid content, and if the game hadn't bored me to tears at such an early stage, then I might have gone on to enjoy it. But if even I can't be motivated to reach the level cap -- and I'm being paid to play this game then what hope is there for your average World of Warcraft subscriber?
So a WoW fan who is used to the easy leveling of WoW has issues with Aion's leveling? I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't go back to certain areas to find that there are quests that had become available once they levelled.
I think the problem here is that some wow players want Aion to be wow and to meter out content like wow. And of course it's not.
I did lvl 20 in 2 days of hard playing and one day each for lvls 30, 31 and 32 on another character. I have many quests that I haven't even gotten to. well written review but I don't agree with it.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
Does every mmo these days have to appeal to the wow audience. This game is the spiritual successor to lineage 2. People who liked lineage 2 should also like how Aion plays, if people want a wow style mmo then just play wow, its the best option for casual or new mmo players. I hate fps games but i dont go round crying about why fps games are not more like rpg games. People enjoy a different kind of mmo experience, so lets stop trying to make every mmo like wow. Oh why cant i raid ulduar at level one in wow, is that not the same thing as the reviewer is saying about Aion.

It does if it wants to be (as NCSoft proclaims) the #2 MMO in the west. Why would you appeal to L2 players. How many of those are there in NA?
if by grind you mean ,there are no way to gain xp aside from killing mob your wrong ,but aside from that all mmo have grind one way or another ,dont want grind play chess
Once again another WoW fan hating on Aion...what's new there? The reviewer didn't even take the time to see the vast majority of the game. Don't get me wrong there are grinding aspects of this game just like there are in any other including WoW but despite this fact, no one can argue Aion's appeal and the numbers don't lie.
If people can hit 50 within a month.. how is it a true grind? Because, you have to grind to level? So did Age of Conan, and I did not hear anyone calling that game a grind.

Really? Show me a statement or vid clip where they state this.
I have seen vid interviews and statements that state taht they only wish their game to do well and hopefully make it out to be the second most popular MMO on the market and that if they surpass WoW then evevn better for them.
After lvl 25 questing was my least source of xp, had too many other options to fill my time.
There's only questing and grinding: Both gathering and PvP give pathetic XP; abyss points from player kills are pretty trivial too until you hit the higher levels.
Crafting falls under gathering in terms of XP earned and serves mostly as a second source of income once you have the capital to level it up; it's mainly standard fare with repeatable quests tacked on to make leveling it easier.
What other options are you talking about then? Lava caves (assuming you've done the quests) and other outside group grinding? Training camp every 17 hours? What are these numerous options you had to fill your time in the game advancing your character?
I suppose you could have waited for the fortresses to become vulnerable every couple of hours as well.
I should have been more specific said "solo PVE" questing was my least source of xp. Since i enjoy grouping more i did all the open elite areas, instances + PvP, crafting and gathering. Filled in some Solo pve quests here a there and leveling was never really grind, My quest log is always full in the 30s and still is.
Gathering EXP is insubstantial all the way to 300 skill. I currently get 1000 exp per tink and 3 - 4 tinks per node. as opposed to 20k per mob solo.
Crafting, at up to 300 skill is the same. Insignificant exp and extremely expensive.
What you are most likely getting most of your exp from is the open elite areas in a group. This is what most of us would call a group grind. You are moving to an area, killing elite mobs for hours, and progressing. This is grinding... its just not solo grinding.
If you do the math on group grinding, its slower than solo grinding 9 out of 10 times exp per kill per hour ratio. Is it more fun? Sure if its a good group that doesnt die. Is it slower? You betcha.
its not one thing that give xp in this game GEES ,player have to understand its a combination of factor
of you skipped gattering at level 1 you will grind somewhere down the road,if you dont kill at least say 10 (random number)of x kind of npc of all kind you will miss quest given by mob ,if you dont...bha anyway the idea is that if you go the usual powerlever route you wont go much faster at leveling then the guy that doesnt skip, and thats intended that way .
yes some might feel slighted because they wanted to be max level in 48 hour but here its not gona happen so my advice
dont skip ,take you time enjoy the game fully and you ll love it
if you really need to powerlevel
then i suggest you skip aion and go play wow because you ll be frustrated in this game
but if you love to be = mostly at the leveling speed when you craft or pvp or whatever ,then this game is nice
if you like to enjoy everything you wont feel penalised
you will level about same speed as the dude that only pvp
and thats what is so enticing about this game, everybody will level fairly at the same speed
at least way more = then almost all game
how many time you skipped crafting because you would level so much faster by skipping it
thats not like that here its gona be fairly same leveling speed
Aion's so called grind is on par with other mmorpgs. If you find Aion a grind, you're playing the wrong genre because you're not going to find a lesser grind anywhere.
that's a big load of crap. so congratulations for hitting the tone of most of the threads in here.
how many ulduar run have you made in wow,if you played it
20 run 50 run ,if thats not grind nobody knows what grind is ,so yes all mmorpg have grind get over that wornout subject lol
You get a very good blue item at the end of that quest. If you want every decent item gift wrapped into your lap like WoW you probably wont like Aion.
Yeah, because running around in a big circle killing the same mobs, grinding the same item is just oh-so-much more hardcore and different than grinding out honor in a BG...amiright?
Katsma is Lithuanian for 'he who drinks used douche fluid'.
Nice review didnt even make into the Abyss lol Look at Xfire.com for the real stats
The same was said about AoC the first weeks too you know. when AoC was on top 5 until people reached endgame or hit the area where content was really missing.
We will see in about 6 months time a much better picture if Ncsoft managed to grab hold on the audience in EU/US.
And AoC never had 3.5 million subs in Asia after a year did they?
Keep trying, your arguments hold no merit without any real facts. Xfire.com ----> humble pie, tasty?

Actually you fail because if that's your summary of Aion then you obviously don't play the game. Spend some time in the Abyss and you'll understand what makes it oh-so-much more hardcore than some ridiculous BG.

I did lvl 20 in 2 days of hard playing and one day each for lvls 30, 31 and 32 on another character. I have many quests that I haven't even gotten to. well written review but I don't agree with it.

You betcha.
its not one thing that give xp in this game GEES ,player have to understand its a combination of factor
of you skipped gattering at level 1 you will grind somewhere down the road,if you dont kill at least say 10 (random number)of x kind of npc of all kind you will miss quest given by mob ,if you dont...bha anyway the idea is that if you go the usual powerlever route you wont go much faster at leveling then the guy that doesnt skip, and thats intended that way .
yes some might feel slighted because they wanted to be max level in 48 hour but here its not gona happen so my advice
dont skip ,take you time enjoy the game fully and you ll love it
if you really need to powerlevel
then i suggest you skip aion and go play wow because you ll be frustrated in this game
but if you love to be = mostly at the leveling speed when you craft or pvp or whatever ,then this game is nice
if you like to enjoy everything you wont feel penalised
you will level about same speed as the dude that only pvp
and thats what is so enticing about this game, everybody will level fairly at the same speed
at least way more = then almost all game
how many time you skipped crafting because you would level so much faster by skipping it
thats not like that here its gona be fairly same leveling speed
that's a big load of crap. so congratulations for hitting the tone of most of the threads in here.
how many ulduar run have you made in wow,if you played it
20 run 50 run ,if thats not grind nobody knows what grind is ,so yes all mmorpg have grind get over that wornout subject lol
Yeah, because running around in a big circle killing the same mobs, grinding the same item is just oh-so-much more hardcore and different than grinding out honor in a BG...amiright?
Katsma is Lithuanian for 'he who drinks used douche fluid'.

I actually get what the reviewer is referring to. For some people (myself included), it just wasn't worth going through 25 levels to get to the so called 'meat' of the game when the beginning was boring. When you're playing the game and the only reason you're still trudging through is because everyone says it gets better, that can't be very fun.
grats you get to play wow
