Gamechat is just the means of communication. Just like mail, phone or whatever way of communication.

I deal with people who lie everyday. I deal with them at work, when running errands, and...can you imagine it....even when I play a video game. Now, some of those lies matter and some, well some just have no impact whatsoever. Whether someone is a male playing a female character, or female playing male, really falls under the no impact category. People may have motives for their lies or they may just be subconscious, but really, if there is no impact that's pretty irrelevant to me. It's great to be the idealist and say "a lie is a lie no matter what", but in dealing with people, I've learned that some lies just aren't worth getting worked up about. The tough part about being the idealist on this is that you really need to look at your own habits and determine if you are 100% honest all the time. If you are then I certainly salute you for your convictions.

So that's where I am coming from. Not really much else to say besides that and everyone is pretty entrenched in their view at this point so not sure there is much progress to be made. Thanks for the conversation and good luck in the game you're playing :)

All in all I think that games altering the voice chat via filters is a funny idea.

Your char got hit by a freezing attack? The game makes your voice sound shivering. Your character is burning? You can hear the flames and stuff when you talk. Your character got enlarged: voice gets deeper. Shrunken: voice gets higher. It's funny and entertaining.

About filters altering voices to sound genderlike? It depends. I personally don't think it's possible to change the voice that simply to make it sound like the other gender. Sure, theoretically it's possible. It's also possible to simulate tsunamis but MMORPGs don't do so because it's too much work. So if that feature is no rumor but will actually be implemented, then I assume it to be just a gimmick which will make the voices sound funny instead of like the other gender.

Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)

Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)

and yes i know the world lies... but you make it sound like its okay to lie...

You are requiring people give you information about their real life in a video game.

No one has an obligation to answer your questions about their real life.

Answering "I don't want to tell you" is information about someone' s real life, you are not entitled to that in a video game.

You cannot force people to give you information about their real lives. It's a video game.

There's been a dozen different voice changing software programs for like 10 years now. Where you been? It's easy to add it to any game nowadays.

Read my post again please, because you misunderstood me. I never implied that all lies are worth getting worked up over. I only tried to explain that it doesnt make a difference if someone lies in a game, mail or over the phone.

What you find condonable as lie is your own choice. That doesnt mean that your lie to someone else gets accepted too. Because thats their choice. So you can expect a serious reaction from someone else over a lie, even if it happens inside a game.

In the case of lying about gender in a game, it depends on what kind of trust is placed upon that information. If someone made up a complete fake background and made others believe that (guild application on website for example), and people find out. Then you can expect people to feel offended.

Essentially you think you can force people to tell you things about themselves in real life, just because you are playing a video game with them.

What gives you the right to force anyone to tell you anything about their real life, just because they are playing a video game wiht you?

Why does someoen HAVE to tell you they aren't comfortable with talking about their real life gender?

That is somethinga bout their REAL LIFE>

You have no right to force anyone to tell you anything about their real life just because they logged on to play WoW.

sorry I quoted your post as a means of rounding out my participation in this thread (though I can't seem to resist a decent discussion). Regarding your comments about people being offended, I believe Imhotepp and Terranah covered that ground fairly early on so appologies for not readdressing it.

Im not sure what the issue is here. Even inside a game you deal with REAL people. The game's world might be virtual, the communication with other players is as real life as it gets.

Of course other players cant demand you to tell the truth or force you not to act like an ass, but dont expect that always to be accepted. Just like in real life. You cant use the game as excuse for this. Its just you, not the game.

This does not mean I have secret wish of being female, but simply, that I enjoy the immersing into the life of my avatar while at the same time keep a strict separation between me and my avatar.
Do you guys foresee some problems, when it becomes more natural for people to alter the voice as games implements easy access to such features, and it is no longer only done by true oddballs?

No problems at all, for it is no different then masquerading in chat.

Voice chat filters have been around since 2003 (that I know of).  A couple of very realistic voice altering softwares start out as low as $19.95 and can be used for many games as well as Vent and Team Speak.

Play Second Life, you will encounter them all the time, for three quarters of the DJ's at clubs use such software.

If one plays MMOs as a game and not as an online dating site, one will have no worries.  If players are using an MMO as an online dating site, they have social/mental issues that are far more serious than what gender a given toon is.

  • BloodDualityBloodDuality Member UncommonPosts: 404

I personally don't really care what my voice sounds like. I am a male and in mmos I tend to mostly play female characters, and have been using vent or other voice chat programs for years. Never once have I altered my voice, and really not too many people complain. I would say it is just more common today for both genders to play oposites, and to create whatever characters they want. Then if they chose to talk with their real voice it isn't that big of a deal. I am a skilled player and people tend to care more about someone(the player) that will have their back in a fight than the gender the person is playing.

Well it's a damned if you do and damned if you don't situation....

According to some people, if you tell the truth you are dishonest, a cross dresser, maybe a closet homosexual, and a pervert.  And if you lie, the same.

So it's a no win situation really.  But does anyone have a right to ask you personal questions on the internet?  Some people here think they are entitled to ask you personal questions and you are obligated to answer, but in truth there is no obligation to do so.  These are rules some people are making up in their own heads and trying to impose on the rest of us.

It's just like when we were kids, there was usually one kid who wanted to control how we played and make all the rules.  And if you didn't play by their rules they had a little hissy fit and pouted.  This is the same thing.  They want to impose their idea that we are all required to expose our real identities to a complete stranger should they ask because they believe falsely that they are entitled to this information.

This sounds great to me, but I'm surprised it's CCP to be doing it. What about all the people playing macho ogre types who sound like whiny teenagers? I'd love to see them given a voice masking option :p

As far as people being asshats, its so easy to just not play with people who can't be civil. Voice chat tends to be a lot more voluntary than all the people who have to see running around the gameworld. If someone's annoying enough, anonymity doesn't matter, no one will want them in their chat channel.

    When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
