For the same reason they send fully armed tanks after protesting students. Because the chinese communist government is insane.

Obviously it's 'a big deal' to SOME people. Just not sane people. The Chinese government isn't particularly big on anonymity, privacy, individuality, or freedom of expression. All things that can be valuable elements of humanity, despite risks of abuse.

    When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

I'm a bit torn on this issue.

On the roleplaying hand, it would help with immersion if voicechat ever becomes integrated into roleplaying cliques.

On the other hand, I sort of feel, "Wow, why the fuck are CCP encouraging people to pretend to be the opposite gender in games?"

Next thing you know, they'll be offering to sell webcam videos to put in place of your regular video to strip.

? So? Not like ya cant do that now! (not that I have done it or anything like that)

But Yahoo offeres it, why not MMOs?

That's different, though. In MMOs, there's the feeling that males will pretend to be female in an attempt to get something OUT of the encounter whereas in Yahoo or whatever, it's not like you're going to paypal them £50 because they're female.

Wow, nice discussion you guys have been having, and I am sorry for not contributing my self but it seems like I got the flu.

The reason why I find this topic interesting, was because I often hear people refer to voice chat when you want to know the real person behind the avatar. It seems like they are not really considering that the voice they hear might be as fake as the ingame avatar.

Personally I do not plan on dating anybody I ever meet online, I hardly regard them as real friends after all. So I would have no problem if voice filters became more common in MMOs so you could really sound like the orc/gnome/crazy wizard that you are trying to be.

I think that there's also the feeling that if you're flirting with pixel girls in an MMORPG and giving them stuff, and cybering with them, you're an idiot.

Why do I care if some guy tricks you into thinking he's a girl, and you give him your gold? It's not going to happen to me, so I'd just laugh at you.

Again, dont' try to turn an MMORPG into Match.com and you'll have no worries.

Don't be a cheapskate. If you're looking for a date, spend the money to subscribe to a dating service on top of your MMORPG subscription. OR, choose which one is most important to you.

It's not likely someone on eharmony or Match.com is going to pretend to be the opposite gender, because that is about REAL LIFE, where you two will actually meet each other.

So it's a no win situation really.  But does anyone have a right to ask you personal questions on the internet?  Some people here think they are entitled to ask you personal questions and you are obligated to answer, but in truth there is no obligation to do so.  These are rules some people are making up in their own heads and trying to impose on the rest of us.

It's just like when we were kids, there was usually one kid who wanted to control how we played and make all the rules.  And if you didn't play by their rules they had a little hissy fit and pouted.  This is the same thing.  They want to impose their idea that we are all required to expose our real identities to a complete stranger should they ask because they believe falsely that they are entitled to this information.

Who exactly is "demanding" I dont think i can demand info from people... i clearly said you can say no or change the subject I cant force you to tell me what am i going to do roll up on your house with a baseball bat if you dont tell me?

I would rather be insecure than what I can not decribe what you are due to TOS. The fact of the matter is you and Ihmotepp have both fed as trolls on this subject giving nothing but baseless opinions on why lying is ok in a video game.  Video games are real, the connections that we build are real(some arent), and some would rather say hey man sup to a guy and not to a penis envy rp girl that thinks its ok to lie.  If you are asked if you are male or female there are other reasons than "wanting to hook up". Which brings me to if you do call a woman in g ame a man she usually goes ape shit pms.

Xavya if you want to be a man go get the operation, if you want to rp a man tell the people that are close to you its respectful to the other people. If you don't like what I am telling you, I have a pez dispenser loaded with midol.

im not sure who i feel sorry for most, the idiots who try to pick up dates in MMO's or the ones pretending to be different genders, its just games after all, people are there to play, not to prey, or be preyd upon. and while i do know that there are women players - they tend to be the wives/girlfriends of players themselves (and quite often thats how they get involved in these games i think). there are a lot of reasons why voice comms is useful in games, in eve its a necessity, fleet operations are a nightmare without it.

It's funny how it's so bad for a male to play a female, but it's perfectly fine for a female to play a male.

But it is even more funny that people get so into someone online that they won't meet that they care which sex the person is.  I could care less if the person I am grouping with is male or female, and I could care less if they don't think I am female.  Not going to lose sleep.  Nor am I going to get so into someone online and than find out they aren't the character they are portraying and than rage or something about it.

Most girls/women playing now started out as gamers when they were kids, just like most of us guys. It's no longer just the "ball and chain" club.

I am usually very respectful of people's privacy, and don't ask personal questions, but how old are you?

I may need to tell you something about Santa Claus, but it's close to Xmas and I'm not sure if you are ready for this or not...

Forcing someone to say no or change the subject is a way to get information about their real life.

Therefore I prefer not to party with guys playing girls.  It's not accepted in environmental association as RP, but rather crossdressing...  And those people have issues.  I like people that enjoy being themselves.

I'm not going to flame you. I do have to say though, that this really makes no sense at all. First you say guys playing girls in an mmo are cross-dresser. Then you go on to say you won't group with them because they aren't being themselves. Maybe they are? Or did you mean to say "I like people that enjoy being themselves as long as it fits into my idea of what is socially acceptable."

On the topic, who cares? If you're playing mmos to pick up chicks, you're doing it wrong.  Also it's only a game. not real life and as other pointed out...Can you only play a Troll if you're a troll? Have you never played a game with a female main character?

When playing an MMO or any game onlyline to be honest, I always assume it's a dude unless I am told otherwise. I play both male/female characters in games. It's just pixels for the type of character I am playing. But I am never anything other than a dude playing a game. I don't act like it in game. I'm not a cross-dresser and I've been married to my wife for 12 years and to the other before her for 2 years. I have 4 kids. I feel pretty confident about who or what I am, despite what my character in a game looks like.

I have to say you anti people think about it way too hard. To some of us it isn't a statement. If I want to say stuff I say it. Itt isn't a social experiment. To some of us, it's just another damn game.

This is an attempt to force other gamers to give you real life information about themselves.

You are not entitled to real life information about other people just because they are playing a video game.

Demanding they have to tell the truth or  not reply is  a way to try and get real life information from people playing a video game.

You have no right to real life information from people playing video games.
