I'm sorry but when I see games like All Points Bulletin, Fallen Earth, Vanguard, Age of Conan, or the countless asian titles with amazing character models there's no reason why SW:TOR has to look like the clone wars cartoon. Guild wars is how old and the models look great. I would have prefered to see KOTOR graphics with realism and detail taken up a notch not WoWars clone-a-toon... imho
I'd like to see some hard data for poly counts and framerates over a couple games taking into acount cartoony vs realistic as well as average computer specs...
How hard would it be to have a graphics setting slider and make it more realistic but take into account performance?
Good point, its not like even a mid range computer can't handle decent graphics these days, and Bioware has already shown it can put out games with decent graphics (Dragon age:Origins) so the dubious graphics quality of SW:ToR just doesnt make sense, it may not be an issue for some, but i guarantee you it will be an issue for others, its not like the game is going to be pvp intensive or anything with lots of players on screen at the same time, though that itself shouldnt be an issue - if APB can handle 100 in each instance then theres no reason why SW:ToR can't do the same. the graphics are even a step below SWG was ... with all the money that has 'reportedly' been spent on this game, why are the graphics not better? with the game having been pushed back to some time next year, its not like they dont have time to upgrade the graphics engine.
Graphics are an extremely subjective part of graphics, and I totally disagree with what the op has wrote here, for one he is posting posters from 1976 and on until the early eighties and nothing about showing those posters illustrates to me how Bioware went wrong (in that the graphics don't look to me like a video game from that era so why in the world would they use graphics that made the game appear to have been made near the first generation of Star Wars).
Sorry they messed up Star Wars for YOU but some of us are happy to be able to have a Star Wars universe that is ever expanding and while we are not always happy with the direction of that branching story (the clone wars cartoon) I certainly will not be dismissive especially when one of the most respected companies to ever work in video games or to work on Star Wars ip itself is bringing this latest experience.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

The game is based on KOTOR, which in turn is loosely based on Star Wars. It has nothing to do with Gorge Lucas. Beside, I don't think he's butchered Star Wars, but that's my own opinion. The graphics from my point of view look great, and if it plays anything like the previous one then it's going to be ten times better than the recent release of Star Trek Online. It might even give WoW a run for it's money.
So your saying Clone Wars on Cartoon Network is not star Wars?
The movie for same is not Star Wars?
Heck even Family Guy has paid homage to SW in cartoon form...
Your version of SW is 40 years old. This generation may not even remember Luke Skywalker unless they chose to watch the old ones to let them understand the new ones.

if its 10 x bigger than STO then it will be giving SWG a run for its money
there is no way that SW:TOR will be able to compete with WoW, as it doesnt have the factors that would normally give a game 'Mass Appeal' expect to find people who liked Kotor etc, playing this game, it will probably be as big as Eve, which btw, isnt a failure, Eve is a popular game, its only that WoW has 'skewed' the numbers a bit, its extremely unlikely that the WoW phenomenon will reoccur, with a decent ad campaign, they might sell a million boxes, but, i would expect sub figures to be about 300k retained rate anyway.. if the game isnt bugged or seriously under resourced that is..
The one thing i will say is this. You cant expect Star wars to last teh decades and still look the same way it did in teh 80's. Now i dont really agree much with teh direction they took with this stylised realism, but you you have to keep an open mind to Star wars appealing to the next generations after you.

Your expectations are based entirely on current market trend and inmy opinion doesn't take into account that Bioware is doing the one thing Blizzard did that made WOW a success (and that is me also disputing the constant claims that WOW is lightning in a bottle, a success that can never be duplicated). They are actually spending alot of money to develop the game it is being headed by a company with a very successful track record (unlike any mmo on the market) for compitent development, high production standards, great immersion, and a loyal fan base.
I'm not saying that TOR will for sure hit WOW numbers but I certainly expect that it is going to do better than the average mmo which is frimly where you put it with the numbers you use.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
I know EVE. I play it, and it's truly a great game. I can't wait for Incarna.
As for WoW, it may or may not. Because to be honest I would love to see WoW taken out of the top ten. But either way, it's going to push Star Trek Online aside with one sweep of it's light sabre.
Last time i checked George Lucas created Star Wars. its his baby and he can do whatever he wants with it. But calling him hack is just an angry emotional response nothing more.
No one is debating if he created it or not, nor if he has the right to do what he wants with it. But he did ruin it for a lot of people.
Okay, I understand people didn't like Episode 1-3 (I didn't exactly either). I didn't like the re-pressings of the originals as well. However, the major complaints about the newer trilogy could be applied to the originals. Stiff acting, annoying characters, Jar-Jar=ewoks so on and so forth...
These were nothing more than movies, it's probably good that he did something to make a lot of those people realize that.
Getting angry at the creator and saying he ruined his own story is just hilarious to me, I'm not even exactly sure why. Maybe it has something to do with, how can you ruin a story that wasn't exactly great in the first place? What was great was the special effects, props, atmosphere and the costumes. Which in the newer trilogy these things were all done well to. Really the first three movies are just about the same quality as the last three. They share the same strengths and the same weaknesses.
When I saw the originals I was young making them seem a lot better to me than they actually were. The fact that I was so young also created a greater impression on me. As it sparked my imagination at such an age. It was a big part of my childhood, that's what makes them special. The same applies to the new movies there's a whole generation of youngsters who probably feel the same way about 1-3 as I did about 4-6.
The originals really weren't much better than 1-3. They just released at a time that made them seem original, today with so many spin-offs you're just not going to be as easily pleased.

It's Star Wars: The Old Republic.....this means its not based on the movies...its based on the lore that surrounds the Old Republic.
It purposely doesn't look and feel like the movies. For multiple reasons.
1. There were few Jedi in the movies, which if we had a world populated by Jedi that it would be completely wrong.
2. The old republic has the look and feel of KOTOR....that's where the lore came from, thats how it should be.
Stop bashing the game, its not made for the hardcore traditional StarWars fan. It's made for the fan who has seen 1-3 or the Clone Wars cartoon or even played some of the better games that recently came out.
Ugh...at some point Devs will look outside the box.

Originals are far from great movies, but they were entertaining and the story was quite fun unlike Ep. 1-3. And before you say " this is just a amatter of taste!" check this out. To understand why Ep.1-3 really suck here is a good review (a bit humorous) that explains this well. There are certain basic "rules" so to speak when presenting a story to other people in any form (book, movie it doesn't matter) in order to be ebtertaining and Ep. 1-3 fail in almost every single one of them.
the graphics look cartoony? the graphics are fine. maybe they're working on things other then graphics? like....everything else? last time i checked graphics didn't make a game.
First, the more realistic the make the graphics, the fewer people who can run it well for an MMO. Less than photo quality graphics is a plus for an MMO.
More importantly, there are many things much more important than graphics in a game. If the 'look' of the game alone has you calling it garbage, I'd say your game priorities are messed up.
the graphics look cartoony? the graphics are fine. maybe they're working on things other then graphics? like....everything else? last time i checked graphics didn't make a game.
The graphics are fine and I don't find them cartoony at all. But Im tired of that BS that graphics don't make a game. In this day and age a company sure as hell better be well rounded enough to achieve a complete game which includes graphics. Some people may not give one shit about graphics but alot of people care about both and so do I. That would be like saying, looks don't make a car .... it runs like a mustang but looks like a rusted out Yugo. Why can't I have both? A good looking car that runs great too?
I am a true star wars fan. I like the prequals, I like the origionals, I like the clone wars cartoons, I like the lego universe games, I like the KTOR games, the old stand up arcade games, I like it all.
/beginfanboyrant
So this will probably not come as a shock... I love the TOR graphics. They are stylistic... a bit cartoony, and efficient. At the same time they are true to the look and feel of the star wars universe. Note that last phrase " the star wars UNIVERSE". Not 'the star wars origional trilogy' , but the whole genre .... the total of the mythos.
You cannot seperate the origional trilogy from the entire saga, they are one and the same.... George Lucas and his production company, their partners and subsidiaries are all equally established in the star wars universe. So cartoony has a place in the pantheon of SW creations e.g. Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Not to mention the host of predecessors in the video game world including but not limited to KTOR. If you like the origional trilogy the most then fine... wait for them to make Star Wars:OT the MMO or go play SWG. But it isnt fair to say if it doesnt look like (insert movie posters here) then it isn't Star Wars, unless you include all the posters/ adverts/ trailers/ book covers/ comic titles / blah blah blah blah.... because as much as you might disagree with it, or not like it ... its ALL Star Wars. Which in the end is ALL George Lucas. So who exactly are you to say this isnt Star Wars?
Nobody.
/endfanboyrant
On a less biased front... I'd say the graphics for TOR are very true indeed to the graphics of its parent product KTOR. They are in fact IMO the perfect evolution of said graphical style. Its KTOR all grown up and I for one commend Bioware for their efforts. I have always thought, second only to Blizzard, Bioware has one of the best graphic teams in the buisness... TOR has done nothing to diminish that opinion.
But an opinion it remains, and we are all intitled to such, so in the end... if you don't like it you don't like it. I respect that. But to say it isn't Star Wars ? Well thats just close minded.

I second this statement.
Yeah, i don't have a problem with the graphics. These are just people who are trolling.
You want realism? Get a bloody job or joined the armed forces. Stop whining.
