Where's the choice for "Trying to appeal even to groupers" or "Catering to the hardcore crowd".
Gotta love a poll with an obvious agenda.
Just because they're out to get you doesn't make them real.
No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-
Well, I wasn't going to discuss this issue, I thought you just wanted me to read the thread and not say anything. But then you wrote "discuss" so of course only after reading that, did I even think about actually discussing the topic.
the MMO genre isn't dying. It's growing in leaps and bounds. There are more gamers playing MMOs that at any time before in history. More games are being made than at any time before in history. There are new payment models, everything from P2P and F2P, B2P, and lots of stuff in between.
I just dont' see any dying going on.
There are bad games being released that flop, but that's never going to stop. You swing, and sometimes you get a home run, sometimes a strike, sometimes it's just a base hit.
Forgot the option of a company is going for either a present group or the masses. Not just you in your own little world but a huge group. Just because a 1000 or so complains doesn't mean the other 15million+ are going to agree with joe nobody from the middle of no where. Plenty of games out there to play single and multiplayer. Like always, you don't like. Don't play it. Cause honestly after a few dozens threads all claiming the same crap for MMO's, personally what makes your post any greater of the other follow in line without question morons. Get off the band wagon like everyone else already. Go read a book or if you love your old MMO's so much go play them instead of sitting on a forum all day repeating the same post about 50 others have already made.
When did you start playing "old school" MMO's. World Of Warcraft?
The problem is that every publisher wants their games to be the next WoW, and none of them seem to realize that that is simply not going to happen, no matter what their budget and resources are.
At this point we're simply overwhelmed by fantasy games that are trying to appeal to their market. Currently, the two contenders closest to WoW are EvE (sci-fi) and Aion (non-standard fantasy). I think that says a lot about the current state of the genre, and why I think that, if done well, the Secret World can take hold of a very stable niche of the MMO market.
I recently played through Dreamfall, and was simply blown away by the setting (and everything else about the game, really, but that's another post). I vividly remember thinking "THIS is a setting I'd like to play in." Unfortunately, the industry is ruled by money, and until we see more Indy devs taking chances, we're going to be stuck with the parade of generic fantasy knockoffs.
Hard to believe seriously... absolutely no originality

So what the rest of the people want?
I mean there's fantasy, sci-fi, social MMO, what else are there?
Steampunk and Western are some fairly popular ones with no representation at all (Neosteam is terrible and does not count). There are a number of others as well which while technically still fantasy or sci-fi could fit in. World of Darkness is kind of filling in for the modern day fantasy/vampire thing, eventually anyway. There have been some in favor of a survival horror/zombie MMO which we'll likely never see. It's definitely not for lack of available options. Personally, I'd prefer just seeing some original IP in any genre at the moment. Tired of these "based off yada yada franchise" games which have their lore and progression pretty much locked in to fit the pre-established IP and have no surprises.

Did you play "The Longest Journey" as well? If you haven't, do so, immediately. And to make this somewhat related to this thread, you might be interested in Secret World, because while I'm sure it's not as indepth obviously being an MMO and not a single player adventure game, it does have Ragnar Tornquist behind it as well.

lol so what you just wrote is soloers should get more loot/exp then groups? There are CRPG's to play you know... lol Here, knock yourself out, man: http://www.elderscrolls.com/
But I'll edit in here since I don't like blank spaces I go with solo and originality.
To much focus on questing and instances to make soloing kewl. It's not kewl, it not mmo, and mmo should not even be kewl.
Lack of originality, well cant be original if you focus on questing and instances to make soloing kewl. It's not kewl, it not mmo, and mmo should not even be kewl.
My first choice is terrestrial sci-fi. Yes high fantasy was way over done. But then a good game in the Napolianic War era would just hit the spot (open world & historical)
Hey, they haven't yet made "my" fantasy game yet. I've been waiting since... welll, a long time.
I keep getting junky fantasy games or silly "cutsey" fanstasy games or fantasy games that have part of what I want but they are junky and buggy.
Most of them don't even have a theme that I'm actually interested in. Dont' like wow's or EQ's world. Don't like what Turbine did to LOTRO as it feels to confined to me, hate the avatars, can't enter areas unless I"m on a certain quest, etc.
I enjoy the Asian games but they don't really have what I'm looking for either.
so as long as develpoers will keep making them I'll try them and see if they are what I want.
As far as sci-fi, I imagine sci-fi would get me exactly in the same boat as well as it take a lot more to get me into a sci-fi. Steam punk? That might do but ddo is sort of steam punk and i hate its cutsey "everything is magical" world.
Besides, when people say sci-fi I sometimes wonder if they mean "science fantasy" as more often than not that is exactl what they mean.
Star Wars is Science Fantasy.
Foundation series is not.
I think my sci-fi game would be a mixture of EVE's art design and use of light and Blade Runner. Throw in the saturated color scheme of the new tron movie and make sure there is nothing cutsey that dominates the game and I suppose I could be in.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
Well considering there are MILLIONS of more players now then there was back in the supposed glory days its really hard to use the word dying. I mean 6 years ago a couple hundred thousand players meant a MMO was successful and now it means its a dying game.

#1 MMO's are not dying there are more players now then there were 3 years ago. If you can't stick to facts, or make even halfway honest statements you fail.
#2 Just because you don't like something doesn't mean its dying. please try and understand the world does not revolve around you or your playing style, and dare i say it, move on.
#3. Ok this will probably get me banned but honestly if this half assed thread polling a less then 5k gamers to advance your one sided agenda is the best you can do then you have way too much time on your hands. Honestly Wow alone has what at least 9 million players and I don't even know of a successfull MMo that doesn't several times more then 5K subscribers yet you hold this poll up as if it means something? Lame.

You mean millions of Blizzard locked players. Companies need to quit chasing that enigma, they are not mmo players. If WoW closed today, there would be 8 million less subs in mmo's tomorrow, 'bout it.

Lets assume those are very broad definitions. Fantasy actually fits under sci-fi.
So we have a game set is a fictional historically inaccurate setting and social chatroom games. The obvious addition to the list is a fictional game set in a historically accurate setting.
Forever looking for employment. Life is rather dull without it.

i have to say, the pay to play mmo's have some compitition with the free to play mmo's. i just hope mmorpg games dont die off.
Needs an option for "All of the above"
Bans a perma, but so are sigs in necro posts.

Only IF people continue to be duped into thinking that every MMO that says it is "free to play" actually is. Fact is, they are not.
Let's party like it is 1863!

Fixed. And sadly, like it or not, a lot of the choices still apply.
A Modest Proposal for MMORPGs:
That the means of progression would not be mutually exclusive from the means of enjoyment.

lol hommie played the Asian card. Do you think I care about free Asian game accounts? Way to go!
Oooohohohohoo yes, fear those Asian games lol
Oh yeees, so validates the thread..... lol

I bet 780 of those are free 2 play generic asian bullshits. hardly count as "games"
Im sure there would be plenty room for more fantasy MMOs if all F2P craps burned in a fire
