I dont really understand why people care if it is a micro-transaction or not. They already had the same thin on FFXI ,and it wasnt a big deal at all . Having multiple alts dont make you better or break the game. They just were used for extra storage most of the time anyways.
I dont think this type of microtransaction is a bad thin, they are a company made to make money, so if you whant to replay the game with all races or having a lv 1 char in every town for whatever, is your choice . This WONT make your char stronger or give you an advantage over other players, at all .and that is when the microtransactions are bad.
SE always been a really strict company when it comes to IRL-money for items that would give you an edge vs other players in general and i doubt they will change their policy in this. Microtransactions to change silly thins (looks-hair-name-etc) are harmless, dont care if they have it or not, even if i dont recall having them on ffxi.Selling items , equipment and such for IRL money is not going to happen on FFXIV, that much i can say.
And yes my english is really bad before the grammar nazi´s come in bashing me like always . Not my first language.
SE is providing players with the ability to do it all on one character, and should that player wish to do something else like all the silly options above, you must pay to do so....simple as that! Clearly you and many others don't like this method so why do you stick around arguing about it, go play something that does everything you want!
I'm sure he will, along with most other western players. GW2 and SWTOR will stomp FFXIV in terms of western sub numbers.

I think that charging an extra $3 a month for each avatar you make is a good thing because that way someone can't hog all the good names, well... they can but it's gonna cost 'em.
Down with the name hoggers!
the 3 bucks is for playable character retainers is you get 1 free 1 rest is 1 dolla
It is like I said in my post, why do you have to confuse everything?
But I think it's great and they should charge $6 extra per month for the rest of your subs life and that will teach you not to hog those names.
All those memories will be lost in time, like tears in the rain.

So to sum up this discussion: There will be microtransactions at launch and they will likey add more if there is a "demand".
If WoW = The Beatles
and WAR = Led Zeppelin
Then LotrO = Pink Floyd
And there sure will be- demand from Yoichi Wada, hohoho
