I have multiple 75s in FFXI. However, I played back when I was a fat kid in grade 10. It is now almost 7 years later for me and I've come a long way.....
Taking 6 people to kill meaningless monsters is not gonna sell =/
EDIT: This topic is about it taking 6 people to kill a trash mob that looks harmless (bunnies, chickens, turkies, goats, lamb, midget goblins w/ dirks, etc.). This is NOT about whether or not a game should be centered around group play. Seeing as how 90% of the responses were made by English illiterate individuals, I had to add this section to assist anyone else who has poor reading comphrension.

Go play a game like WoW? I haven't even played FF XI, but I sincerely hope that they keep the grouping focused play because it is unique among the current selection of MMORPGs, and the people I know that play that game love that grouping is necessary.

Uh huh, so a 6-foot crab = the kind you accidently step on at the beach?
Sheep were only in the early levels too, and soloable.
When you make up stuff like this, I dare you to try harder.

Wow so you did 0 research, know nothing of the changes from XI to XIV, and come here opening with a negative post to showcase your toolbaggery. Bravo.
I beg to differ, Irate Sheep, lvl 82-85 for the new Abyssea, which take an 18-man alliance to take them down:
Expect there to still be group play in FFXIV, maybe not as much as XI required, but it will be there throughout the entire journey.
Some good ole Dodo PTing and my goodness the tank must be a player...listen to all that button spamming. You only need to press the button once; when your ability is available again....sheesh!
Final Fantasy XIV (Beta) - Group Play - Dodo EXPing
Here is that same button spammer getting owned by a sheep in the starter area...rofl!
Sigh.
I had a few friends pass on Xi when they watched me kill crabs with 5 other people. It's just not gonna sell; especially not to my girl who's been playing WoW for a while and used to seeing parties for dragons and such.
Hopefully the combat system picks up a bit more than what we've been seeing in the beta/alpha videos, right now it looks like Final Fantasy XI reskinned.
LFG! sheep pulling party!
Now the only real question is whether or not there will be good "Archer's Corpse" jokes
Cool vid, I like the fluid animations and particle effects.
Makes me wish the next FF-MMO draws on the more recent sci-fi themes they have been going with.
w/e on the sheep though...

I have to agree with the OP here. And seriously, what's with "go play WoW" comments. It's getting old. I think that it should require a group to take down tough monsters, usually big in size (but then again, you got yoda). But yeah, requiring more than several players just to take down some Sheep/Crab/Worm not too large in size does hurt the gameplay and makes me (and maybe others) think that the devs poorly associate stats with some types of monsters. I've seen quite a few vids where players are dieing and it's always unexpected (like how did that small bunny just kill me!!! i just freakin stabbed it a dozen times). The reason being is that when your with your group exploring the zones and you guys see a monster that looks like it might be tough, then its probably tough. When you see some innocent sheep monster that destroys the crap outta you then thats just weird and out-of-place. So then every player is going to cling onto their groups like mad, not daring to attack anything at all since no one is sure just how powerful that ground worm is despite it being much smaller than you. Now i'm not saying that it should be always based on sizes where the small monster is always weaker, i'm just saying that the type/size of monster shouldn't be too unrealistically or unnecesarly powerful or even underpowered.
I don't want to see a huge raid of players teaming up to take down the sheep. It would be too odd.
Have you ever tried to fight a pissed off sheep with a sharp stick or maybe some magic in real life..... it's not that easy....
My theme song.
....but its ok to see giant raids of players in <that other MMO> to kill a few spiders or bugs in select instances. And other various small creatures...
On that vid you posted;
I can see that particular battle theme getting stale over time, is there any others that might be based on zone or type (excluding bosses)?

I had to give a pretty large goat a falcon punch once. He didn't want any after that.

Did the 6 foot crab look like this 0.o???------------------>
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wh6xdIOrTcc
At launch Stray Mary was NOT soloable.
And Bernie the crab was a beast of epic proportions.
I kill other players because they're smarter than AI, sometimes.
The first part of your post really isn't appropriate and is incredibly immature. World of Warcraft, despite it's flaws, isn't the easiest game in the world and to denigrate the game by using it as some sort of pejorative is just not cool. If you want to tell the OP to play a game that you think is, to perhaps oversimplify, 'bad and far too easy,' tell them to play something like Maple Story or some free- or pseudo-free-to-play game. If you want to take shots at World of Warcraft do so legitimately, take a shot at Blizzard.
That said, even though I am unlikely to play FFXIV I do agree with you that they should all but force grouping. (note: FoV makes soloing viable for all jobs but if you really are out to do this for any other reason than time constraints you aren't going to have a good time.) This is what FFXI does and games like it do, period, and folks need to accept that it is what it is and that it isn't necessarily bad. The problem with the forced grouping in FFXI is that it really is non-sensical. We have a litle joke, both former and current players of FFXI, that 'no matter who you are, no matter how badass your jobs, somewhere out there is a rarab that can kick your ass!' This is what the OP is emphasising, not the forced grouping but that it is largely meaningless for mobs as trivial as rabbits to be amped up on methamphetamines, angeldust and steroids and require a full party destroy.
Personally, I'd like to go further and say that it also shouldn't require de facto party compositions to take down certain non-NM monster either, and it largely doesn't, but that is simply the mindset that has become part of this party mechanic. Because even rabbits can rival the power of God (it's hyperbole but not terribly far off) players what parties to be constructed in a very specific way to make the inevitable 3+ hours of inputting the same commands over and over more effective. It is important to notice that fun isn't a part of that, not usually, and this is a problem too.
The only really good thing that can come out of forced grouping is a much greater chance of having a legitimate and tighter community and stronger bonds being generated between players. After all, if you're spending hours staring at largely the same thing on the screen (except the text) you're likely to talk to break the monotony. The more you talk the more you're likely to get to know the people you play with and the more likely you are to party together again.
There are some definite pros and cons to be looked at here and they are rather strong on both sides. Square-Enix can do something great here if they find a way to make forced grouping work, which is what I think they will do, but folks are definitely in for a rude awakening if they think that S-E is going to make changes to what they invision for their product. That is simply how S-E operates, for good and for ill, in a straight line and with little direction from outside influence. It should be clear to players of FFXI that this is the case and this is something that should inform their decision to play FFXIV. (I could, of course, substantiate this claim but I think I have done that in other places here and it would make this post too long. Those that have experienced the game know that it isn't exactly player-friendly, for several reasons, and that those who experience the game now are aware of just how long it took for S-E to do what they did.)
(1)TL:DR must be your way of saying that thinking hurts. Then again, this may explain why it looks like you responded to the post without using your brain.
(2) It's not about community, is it? You just have nothing better to do.
While the video was cool and all, the tank needed to get his aggro the mob was all over the place, and the thing should be jumping at players and doing other stuff, like if you fight a sheep it better have some kind of charge ability or something. Will have to see what they give each monster to do, I just imagine that there should be more to them than just a simple attack that looks like an auto attack. Just want to see more animation, I guess I am asking too much lol but the bosses better have some cool fighting animation.
Oh and if you got crab's figthing the little buggers is an epic battle all the itching and stuff, too bad they do not drop some epic purples when you defeat them.
And on another note have you see the size of the crabs? If you had something like them in real life well it would take a bunch of people to defeat them, they would actually be scary to even fight.
The_Grump they have greatly changed their old ways of forced grouping from FFXI. Most of the game is scalable based on party size. Roles are greatly mixed with the class system, and many party compositions work great including all DD. You can take a level 1-5 guild leve with 1-2 being solable to somewhat soloable and 3-5 allowing for different party make ups for greater rewards. I am sure many things will take 6+ people but there seems to be a great bit of allowance in party makeups from what I can tell.
As for weak monsters at all levels being ridiculously strong like boars, rabbits, crabs, etc. they exist in every MMO really and I have no problem with it. No mobs have ever been as notoriously badass as those in FF games IMO.
It seems simple to me: you either like to party or you don't. A solo grind to max level doesn't appeal to me at all. MMO is synonymous with social interaction in my mind.
With that said I do understand that certain people have their own habits to contend with, and I do hope that for the sake of the community, solo players are not completely shunned.
Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
Final Fantasy 7
yea that video looked good, everthing except for the DoDo bird. Kind of have to agree with the OP here, does not feel fun to pick on helpless creatures.
The game has like 15 battle themes. It's crazy.
I think many of them will be used for bosses though.
I think a skin change can help.
I'd feel much better about fighting an epic slime than an epic sheep.
Just saying. I don't feel very Final Fantasied breaking up the barn yard.
I kill other players because they're smarter than AI, sometimes.
That video with the Dodo's causing up shit actually makes me want this game even more.
So glad to finally see another game that will provide not only an incenitive to group, but provide a challenge for a change, absolutely can't wait for this game anymore ><
People are still watching that stupid video?
Didnt they make themselves look stupid enough by not comprehending what BASED on means?
Apparently stating the truth in my sig is "trolling"
Sig typo fixed thanks to an observant stragen001.
I dunno did you not make yourself look stupid just now? just sayin.
Yeah, I'm on the same page as that right now.
They still accepting applications to join beta? I'm about to es'plode from boredom here.
