Um ill just toss some stuff out there. everygame has a fiant grab that nneds killing that takes more than 1 person the same level as it its a fact. Uhhh the animation speed is hella slow for your typical mmo but not so much for a FF series also take into account that all we have seen is low level play where you have the least amount of skills to use. Just something I noticed pugilist seems to have a decent attack speed out side of skills might be a good option for the boom boom boomers which I am also.
Is it just me or does it seems like the OP (and others) is basing their assumptions about FF14 gameplay and combat on their FF11 experience? Without having played FF14 in any capacity? because if that were true it would be monumentally stupid. I've yet to need a full group to kill rabbits, sheep, bats, etc.
In other words, your right, BEING FORCED to take 6 people to kill meaningless monsters won't sell.
Good thing they're not doing that.
Guildleves (quests basically) difficulty can be scaled for solo to a full party, which is more than 6 BTW. So if you decide you want to take a shit ton of people to kill a gaggle of rats you can. Or you can scale it down and solo it. So if you don't like getting people together to kill some crap mobs, its your own damn fault for making it that way.

LOL at all the peeps saying that taking 6 peeps to grind a higher mob, a dodo at that, is redick ; here is a link of solo play and this time its bats if that helps. LMAO at some peeps making so much of a single vid they see
also noticed she grabbed 800 xp out of 2400 xp for her lvl on that quest, so lvling may be pretty fats atleast at low
Why is the combat so slow? I mean, I'm not asking for twitch combat (actually yes I am, just not from this game) but damn, it's like 4-5 seconds between attacks, you can't even excuse that as 'strategic.'
Edit: also LMAO at the shadows at 1:54. I hope that they fix that.
The only reason it's taking 4-5 seconds between attacks is because the person playing is either timing it incorrectly (if you hit it too fast, the skill doesn't activate) or is lagging. There is only a 1 or 1.5 second delay between attacks, minus stamina required for skills which keeps it from face rolling to win.
I'll sort of believe it when I see it, everything that is currently available to non closed beta testers shows 4-5 seconds in between attacks which isn't even the worst bit, the worst bit is how slow the animations themselves are...
I really would like to see combat that looks a little more fluid. It doesn't need to be super fast but it should be fluid (even mobs reaction times and positioning seems way too slow).
Didn't you watch the E3 demo from the lead designer himself? It was almost instantaneous. The only time it wasn't was when he spammed the button to attack, which causes it to delay.
It's not an "edited" version, that's actual beta. This person was still learning and fumbling around. If you took any one of us in a brand new MMO setting and recorded it, I bet majority would really show their noob stripes as they were figuring out the basics of the game.
Okay so that video is decent but the first fight is 43 seconds and 12 attacks+1 other ability used in that time so thats about an attack every 3 seconds. Not bad.
The mob's attack rate definitely makes the combat feel much more sluggish. It just looks a little too "stand still and hit x repeatedly every 3 seconds." I know it's what people are used to since FXII is turn based but I just think combat can be much more fluid and still not "too fast."
Given how hard they're trying to entice old FFXI players over, it's safe to assume if you didn't like FFXI you're probably not going to like FFXIV that much. It may have a broader appeal now, but that style of combat is how FF is done and if it doesn't do it for you then don't expect much more.
It is, however, leaps and bounds more interactive than FFXI's combat system was.

Many people forget that it took 3 deaths and a holy hand grenade to take down 1 rabbit. So i can see a full group taking on a rabbit. As a developer, requiring 6 people to kill a sheep/crab/worm says "Our players are weak morons and need others to hold their hands" to me.
Requiring 6 people to kill a dragon or some such beast says "Our players aren't stupid and they bring friends to tough fights."
Maybe it's just me, but I agree with the OP. It seemed like he wasn't arguing against the group-focused aspect of FFXI and (whether it is or not) possibly FFXIV, he just thought having to group against something mundane and "weak" when you're supposed to be above average is kind of silly.
And if you want to use the killer rabbit as justification, you need to incorporate everything else from Monty Python and the Holy Grail, too. Goodbye epic battles - armies will be stopped by random police every time. We'll need plenty of swallows, Frenchmen with weak insults, brave (like Sir Robin) knights, and a very important quest that goes absolutely nowhere.

Well maybe instead of making the game a giant pun, they should just avoid killing animals in the first place. Personally I think it's dumb unless it's some kind of hunting thing. Just have monsters, dragons, etc. for killing IMO.

From what I gather, Square-Enix wanted to do immersion and they really went after it. In some ways they hit the nail on the head (job classes per character) and they are bringing this to FFXIV, in other ways they simply missed the mark (quest givers). It looks like they added the wildlife to create a sense of real world that is under attack, not simply a hostile world where everything is out to get the player. You're right though, it's awkward as hell to see people in really powerful gear simply wailing away on wildlife without an in-game reason when immersion is such a big part of the game's design.
What Square-Enix did in making even the rabbits badass was create areas of the game that people simply don't want to go to and make de facto experience parties where only certain mobs were targeted because they went down easy. This makes perfect sense to players because they want to get the most experience for their time, but in terms of the strong sense of immersion that S-E seemed to want it just didn't work out. Players aren't really exploring areas or fighting more interesting mobs because it's at once not as rewarding in-game and is simply too difficult.
Some games are good and some games are bad, but each one has their flaws no matter what. FFXI has some flaws and this is one of them, something that is much easier to cope with since FoV than earlier on in the game's history.
(1)TL:DR must be your way of saying that thinking hurts. Then again, this may explain why it looks like you responded to the post without using your brain. (2) It's not about community, is it? You just have nothing better to do.
I have to agree with the OP here. And seriously, what's with "go play WoW" comments. It's getting old. I think that it should require a group to take down tough monsters, usually big in size (but then again, you got yoda). But yeah, requiring more than several players just to take down some Sheep/Crab/Worm not too large in size does hurt the gameplay and makes me (and maybe others) think that the devs poorly associate stats with some types of monsters. I've seen quite a few vids where players are dieing and it's always unexpected (like how did that small bunny just kill me!!! i just freakin stabbed it a dozen times). The reason being is that when your with your group exploring the zones and you guys see a monster that looks like it might be tough, then its probably tough. When you see some innocent sheep monster that destroys the crap outta you then thats just weird and out-of-place. So then every player is going to cling onto their groups like mad, not daring to attack anything at all since no one is sure just how powerful that ground worm is despite it being much smaller than you. Now i'm not saying that it should be always based on sizes where the small monster is always weaker, i'm just saying that the type/size of monster shouldn't be too unrealistically or unnecesarly powerful or even underpowered.
I don't want to see a huge raid of players teaming up to take down the sheep. It would be too odd.
Well it was fucking hilarious in Monty Python's "Search For The Holy Grail":
People are complaining about the combat being slow: Did you not notice that he was using the same attack over and over again? I think he only used something different once. The cooldown for the main attack may be a couple of seconds, but he pretty much filled the TP gauge and didn't use it. He could have been using more powerful attacks inbetween the basic one, but he didn't.
I kind of agree with the OP too. We've already seen that the game is solo friendly though so it doesn't really matter. I stupidly chose one of the less desirable classes in FFXI so it was difficult for me to get a group. I'd literally log in, and wouldn't be able to do anything at all. It was stupid that people couldn't kill things alone. Not even stupid little crabs. I think it would be better if mobs that are intended to be taken on by a group look a bit more intimidating
here is a vid of a bumch of diff mosters about half way through, dragons, ugly hypographs, flying lil pumpkin faces, and lizards ohh my!!!!!!!!!!! looks like all kinds of stuff to be fighting
thats great.. but that didn't change the fact that they still need a full group to kill a f*king turkey.

The dodos face extinction for the second time. Only makes sense they give people hell :P
I played the beta couple of hours, and i enjoyed every minute of it .You start out killing small critters ( what a surprise)like in every other game. The battle system once you get acostume to is actually pretty fun. The customisation of stats/ class abilities is somethin to look forward to ( didnt get that far in beta but just looking at the menus and such looks amazing ). The graphics are outstanding. It have the look of the saga ( you like it or hate it ).The story with the voice acting is flawless.
People complaining becouse is diferent , or becouse is slow , well all i can say is that not everyone is going to like it , but i can asure you all the PVErs out there will find a great game to inmerse in.But to be honest if u whant a damn wow clone go look somewere else . Nothin to see here.
Yes the mobs start out being fluffy rats and such , ( well actually they are a bunch of ameba looking thins that come out of the water first) and theres a giant crab . YEY the crabs are back.
I played aion- wow-EQ- FFXI- runes of magic-guild wars and few others for quite a while. And by my PLAYED experience on a unfinished game i can tell you this is MORE FUN by far.IS challenging , the battles takes strategy and not the tank and spank im so hella tired of. I havent seen any form of huge demon or dragon huge mob to grind at . But i can live with that.If you need that to be able to enjoy the game from day 1 and not the gameplay, lore/story character customisation, challenging quests that actually make you read the journal to know what the next step is, interaction between the players for skillchaines(is called somethin else here)-strategy a really complex crafting system and outstanding graphics, well i guess your right dont buy the game.
I myself cant wait till i can start playing the finished game already.
I have multiple 75s in FFXI. However, I played back when I was a fat kid in grade 10. It is now almost 7 years later for me and I've come a long way.....
Taking 6 people to kill meaningless monsters is not gonna sell =/
What about the people who still have a lot of time on their hands and wouldn't mind, or would even enjoy more group-focused combat? They don't count?
What about people who have full-time jobs and/or families and have little time to play, but still enjoy and prefer a more group-centric game? Just pretend they don't exist?
The game has to change to suit you, because you, Lienhart, no longer have the time to play the way you used to? Rather ego-centric, wouldn't you say?

Go play a game like WoW? I haven't even played FF XI, but I sincerely hope that they keep the grouping focused play because it is unique among the current selection of MMORPGs, and the people I know that play that game love that grouping is necessary.
The first part of your post really isn't appropriate and is incredibly immature. World of Warcraft, despite it's flaws, isn't the easiest game in the world and to denigrate the game by using it as some sort of pejorative is just not cool. If you want to tell the OP to play a game that you think is, to perhaps oversimplify, 'bad and far too easy,' tell them to play something like Maple Story or some free- or pseudo-free-to-play game. If you want to take shots at World of Warcraft do so legitimately, take a shot at Blizzard.
Suggesting to "play a game like WoW" in the context of the OP is perfectly appropriate, actually.
WoW, and games like it, are highly soloable, are they not? That's a fact that's been well known for a long time now, by many people - and touted as a "Good Thing" by many people. It's not like he's letting some cat out of the bag.
Seems you certainly took offense to it, for what reason I'm not sure. Regardless, the statement is relevant here.
Also, FFXIV will have plenty of soloable content, so those who never ever want to group up with others will have things to do. Of course they won't be able to solo the entire game, which I'm sure will be a terrible travesty for them... but whatever. Those who prefer group-centric gameplay deserve a game they can enjoy just as much as soloers do theirs. And frankly, soloers have plenty of options these days... such as, yes, WoW and other MMOs like it.

I played ffxi for about 4 years the only thing they should have done differntly was maybe change the looks of the mobs. A level 5 crab looks the same as a level 70 crab, maybe a color change but most of the time not. It was far from meaningless, It was all about XP. In comarision its just like all the meaningless quests in any quest driven mmo.
and btw some people actually liked grouping in ffxi.
I loved grouping in FFXI... particularly pre level-sync and, even moreso, pre power-leveler.
Remember those days? Players actually learned to play their jobs, work in a group and understand the mobs better to get through an area. I didn't read people say stupid crap like, "we can't take on pugils in the Dunes at level 11, so we need a PL or we have to disband", while never considering to fight stuff they *could* handle.
Yeah, I miss those days.

Hehe I don't think the game will be about 6 people taking on 1 chicken.
While there may be a few fights like that, I'm hoping more for this ------>
And no, this isn't something i've seen myself, just something I found on Google Images.
No idea what they are supposed to be.. but looks like it could be fun.
That looks amazing! Does anyone else have any more info on this or anything similar?
Well that's an old Alpha screenshot, one of the first batches released, I think. Those basically look like... gah.. can't remember the name of them, but they're mobs you find in Campaign Battle a lot in FFXI (especially in Pashow)... and they *suck*. They have this DoT paralysis they'll put on you, where it counts down and you get progressively slower. If it's not removed in time, you freeze in place. When I saw that screenshot, I thought, "Oh crap not those again" lol.
That said, looks like that could be an example of a solo person taking on two mobs (probably during a guildleve). Though, not sure if you'll actually fight those things so close to Limsa Lominsa (shown in the background on the left), or if that was just temporary for early Alpha work, etc...

All the people complaining about needing a group to kill a sheep should stop talking until they've attempted to take down Pandemonium Warden. I don't care if it takes 18 people to kill a rabbit as long as it doesn't take 18 hours.
Wow... talk about old and irrelevant news.
It doesn't take 18 hours. It takes under 2 hours.... if done right (and that's the trick).
That group spent 18 hours trying and failing to defeat it, apparently not stopping to think "gee we've been at this for a while, and we're not making progress. Maybe we're doing something wrong?".
Nope they, and many others, assumed they were doing everything right, and SE had created a mob that took 18+ hours to defeat. Apparently they felt that was a far more plausible conclusion than to consider that, say, they were doing something wrong.
That whole 18 hour fight thing was a perfect example of how people won't take responsibility for themselves or their actions, and then will blame someone else for it. Due to the outcries of "How could they do such a thing?!", SE realized they have to baby-sit people who can't figure out for themselves when it was time to stop. They placed a limit on PW and if you don't defeat him within 2 hours, he despawns. The first group to beat him, I believe, had 5 minutes to spare.
No one *forced* them to spend 18 hours fighting a mob in a video game. They chose to do it.

IMO "group focused play" in FFXI is in a sorry, broken state. I hope they sweeten the deal if you group, but forcing your hand to party is not the way to go.
Over the years FFXI has tried to throw a bone to the soloists (campaign, besieged, FoV) and it's been a little lackluster.
When forced grouping was at it's worst you'd have to sit in Jeuno (the major hub city) for hours trying to build a party or get into one. You HAD to have the ideal party make up because the game was such a grind that if you didn't get a certain xp per hour people got fed up and left. The "ideal party" being a tank, healer, refresher and solid dps. This is still the case for merit parties even in today's game. I returned to FFXI briefly last month after taking a long break from the game and joined an old friend's linkshell. The first day I was there I caught part of a conversation that went something like "I joined this pt and they had a <insert class here> and I just up and left, lol" Or how about this, I say in LS chat : "Hey guys, sexy 75 THF/ 75 NIN looking for some xp" I get various responses like "Why would I take a lolTHF when I can take a DRG or a SAM?" Ok, yeah that linkshell has a bunch of jerks, they were really just voicing what most people think.
This reply wasn't meant to be a bash on FFXI or FFXIV. I was just trying to make the point that I hope when they make FFXIV that they keep the same "vision" of their grouping concept but don't use the exact same formula.
Cool vid, I like the fluid animations and particle effects.
Makes me wish the next FF-MMO draws on the more recent sci-fi themes they have been going with.
w/e on the sheep though...
Am I honestly the only one who thought that this was a really, really boring vid? o.O
MMO's played: Ragnarok Online (For years), WoW (for a few weeks only), Guild Wars, Lineage 2, Eve, Allods, Shattered Galaxy, 9 Dragons, City of Heroes, City of Villains, Star Trek Online (Got someone ELSE to pay for it), Champions Online (Someone else paid), Dofus, Dragonica, LOTRO, DDO and more... A LOT more. I've played good AND bad. The bad didn't last long. :P
I'm alright with the idea of a game being group centric, after all, mmos are supposed to be social games with multiple players.
Though the idea of requiring several players in order to take down some weakling looking creatures just doesn't sound like it'd feel very heroic.
Then again it looks like it appeals to a fair amount of people, plus i haven't looked into either of the FF mmos much at all, so i'll hold my tongue for now.

I think it would be better if mobs that are intended to be taken on by a group look a bit more intimidating
thats great.. but that didn't change the fact that they still need a full group to kill a f*king turkey.
The dodos face extinction for the second time. Only makes sense they give people hell :P

That looks amazing! Does anyone else have any more info on this or anything similar?
I loved grouping in FFXI... particularly pre level-sync and, even moreso, pre power-leveler.
Remember those days? Players actually learned to play their jobs, work in a group and understand the mobs better to get through an area. I didn't read people say stupid crap like, "we can't take on pugils in the Dunes at level 11, so we need a PL or we have to disband", while never considering to fight stuff they *could* handle.
Yeah, I miss those days.

Wow... talk about old and irrelevant news.
