    sigh....blha no1 seems to understand...

    etc.

I have multiple 75s in FFXI. However, I played back when I was a fat kid in grade 10. It is now almost 7 years later for me and I've come a long way.....

Taking 6 people to kill meaningless monsters is not gonna sell =/

    OP

You will have other means to exp up than to grind this meaningless mobs, worry not.The option to exp other ways is given, you can check the website, is called guildlevels .But the option to do it the FFXI way will still be there for those who like/enjoy w-e grinding as well.I myself im married and have a child i cant be spending hours and hours grinding like i used to 7 years ago when i started FFXI, and im not worried, prolly the FFXI die hard fans(wich i am to some point ) will be becouse this is supoused to be more casual friendly. And again , the content shown on beta is nothin, really dont judge the whole game by this video. The monsters and such im guessing will be from the FF saga , i wont lie to you there. But still will be a memorable game for all the pvers out there. It wont be perfect, it will have isues and stuf some people wont like.

To be Honest as most of the info from the game is kept in shadows even to closed-beta testers( or so they say) past the initial stage that they allowed us to play , no1 can really tell how it will look-will be on release. But im sure ,well, at least i do hope so it will be a memorable experience.

I'm all for raid level sheep. Sheep are way too powerful to be taken out by a single group. I really hate when they dumb down sheep by making them solo or critter caliber targets.

Forever looking for employment. Life is rather dull without it.

LOL at all the peeps saying that taking 6 peeps to grind a higher mob, a dodo at that, is redick ; here is a link of solo play and this time its bats if that helps. LMAO at some peeps making so much of a single vid they see

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tBby_P-ogNc

also noticed she grabbed 800 xp out of 2400 xp for her lvl on that quest, so lvling may be pretty fats atleast at low

What happened in FFXI, at least during the earlier years when I was playing, was that there were interesting enemies to fight but they were harder to get to, harder to fight, and gave no greater reward. Castle Zvahl up past the glaciers was packed with awesome-looking demon enemies. Nobody ever said "Let's run up to Zvahl Keep and grind on demons" or "LF1M to grind Bombs and Magic Pots in Ro'Maeve". The crabs and crawlers and beetles were just unavoidably better to fight, especially considering how steep the death penalties were. You'd rather fight for pulls with 2 other parties in CN Secret Room if it meant not dying trying to kill ahrimans and Evil Weapons. It was rare that anyone would ever fight anything other than the 8 easiest mob types unless they needed a key or a quest.

He actually commented on that video that he had no provoke skill at that point and that with his gear level the dodo would kill him in 2-3 hits. Search for more beta footage on youtube and you'll see that tanking is quite possible and it looks "right" comparing to what we are used to see in other mmorpgs.

Finally, someone who knows what I'm talking about and can actually read English + played the original game at launch.

I live to go faster...or die trying.

Why is the combat so slow? I mean, I'm not asking for twitch combat (actually yes I am, just not from this game) but damn, it's like 4-5 seconds between attacks, you can't even excuse that as 'strategic.'

Edit: also LMAO at the shadows at 1:54. I hope that they fix that. One thing that bothers me though: in the begining of the video where a whole bunch of players were hanging around, did every one else notice that their armor looked the same? I mean it just looked like a big mob dressed in all grey with white pouches hanging off their right buttock.

The only reason it's taking 4-5 seconds between attacks is because the person playing is either timing it incorrectly (if you hit it too fast, the skill doesn't activate) or is lagging.  There is only a 1 or 1.5 second delay between attacks, minus stamina required for skills which keeps it from face rolling to win.

Hopefully the combat system picks up a bit more than what we've been seeing in the beta/alpha videos, right now it looks like Final Fantasy XI reskinned.

Clearly the first time you "group" in WoW you fight nothing but dragons.  Only, oh wait, you have absolutely zero reason to group prior to max level.

Because it's NOT THE SAME GAME.

Obviously since your few brain-dead friends watched you play and decided to pass on the game instead of trying it for themselves won't play it, everyone is going to hate it.  /facepalm on a new level right there.

I hope that you're right because otherwise, the combat looks way too slow.

I want to buy this game but since I'm not in beta, all I have to go on are these vids and when I see combat where there is a 4-5 second gap between attacks, I get worried.

I looked at a video of two people playing chess and man, it looked slow and boring.

I can't believe why someone would like chess. What a shitty game.

    Hopefully you get my point.

Well, if you think that FF14 combat can even be compared to chess, you should probably re-evaluate your devotion to this game.

I'll sort of believe it when I see it, everything that is currently available to non closed beta testers shows 4-5 seconds in between attacks which isn't even the worst bit, the worst bit is how slow the animations themselves are...

I really would like to see combat that looks a little more fluid. It doesn't need to be super fast but it should be fluid (even mobs reaction times and positioning seems way too slow).

Didn't you watch the E3 demo from the lead designer himself?  It was almost instantaneous.  The only time it wasn't was when he spammed the button to attack, which causes it to delay.

It's not an "edited" version, that's actual beta.  This person was still learning and fumbling around.  If you took any one of us in a brand new MMO setting and recorded it, I bet majority would really show their noob stripes as they were figuring out the basics of the game.

Edit for Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eONoACmL5AM  skip to about 2 minutes in for the combat to begin.

The point is that watching someone playing a game =/= playing the game. Chess is the best example because so much of the game happens in the head of the player, and an outsider can have a hard time getting into it.

But that doesn't mean it's not interesting for the two players.

You could apply this to pretty much everything, although some games rely on twitch and fast reflexes so it's more fun to watch too.

I haven't seen much complaints about the battle pace, most people have liked it. The complaints have more to do with the slight clunkiness of movement and lag, and that most skills right now are useless to use.

This sums it up rather well.  I love playing chess, but I'll be damned if I'm going to watch a chess tournament.

Besides, how many WoW players spend their time watching videos on the game instead of playing?  If you're not in beta, you can't really judge the game (and even then it's still beta).

Okay so that video is decent but the first fight is 43 seconds and 12 attacks+1 other ability used in that time so thats about an attack every 3 seconds. Not bad.

The mob's attack rate definitely makes the combat feel much more sluggish. It just looks a little too "stand still and hit x repeatedly every 3 seconds." I know it's what people are used to since FXII is turn based but I just think combat can be much more fluid and still not "too fast."

Groups in XI annoyed me to such insanely huge lengths I leveled up white mage quite high and just stayed with beastmaster as the main job so I could solo and not have to deal what that god awful experience..

Apparently they added some solo class in the expansion, but didn't play back then.  Original game was such an annoying POS for so many reasons that all came back to the AWFUL GROUP EXPERIENCE...

Again, you're comparing an incredibly complex and strategic game like chess to FFXIV?

It's a video game, dawg, and am MMORPG at that. No matter how much you try to dress it up, the combat against NPCs will never be so deep as to require more than 2 seconds to figure out what to do. Most of MMO gamers utilize muscle memory anyway. In other words, while chess is slow, there is a reason for it to be slow and that reason is the fact that you actually have to think while playing chess. You can't expect me to believe that you honestly think that FFXIV will require serious thinking during combat?

As far as you haven't seen much compaints about battle pace means nothing. I'd be hard to pressed to name one MMORPG where people would complain about the pace of the battles. Actually, and I could be wrong, but this is the first time I see people complaining about the speed of combat in an MMORPG. This is the first time I questioned the speed of combat in an MMO, that's for sure.

I dunno folks. Not sure I like what I am seeing here.  The game looks good in itself I guess, but what the hell, the 6 man vs a dodo bird ? The bats and the slow combat?

Well, I guess I will get the game regardless. /sigh

thing is we are not seeing much here at all. It's far to early with the info released to make any acurate asumption of this game. That being said i remain optimistic. So the combat isn't twitch based or turn based, its somewhere in the middle. When I play it i will decide if it works for me or not. Thing is i'm not really looking for a game to have me tensed up hoping i hit a button at the exact split moment to have succes or not. I'm looking for a game that is deep and emersive, tells a good story, gives many avenues to walk down and explore and doesnt hold my hand or force me any direction to go. I feel this game may give me all of this. Hoping so
