Man another MMO flop

I had high hopes for this game.  FFXI wasn't great, but I got some enjoyment out of it.  Im not a hardcore MMO'er but ive played my fair share.  I was thrilled to get into OB this week and went into it with NO expectations.

I'd really like to say that this game will do well, but it looks like i'll be playing BFBC2 quite a bit longer until GW2 comes out.  Ive tried to think possative about this, but here are my gripes.

1)  Not "newbie" friendly Now normally this wouldn't be a huge deal.  Im all for making a game challenging, but most of it in this game seems to be out of laziness.  When in town, you have NO idea what different NPC's are there for.  Whats more, there are pretty much no tutorials, ( I had to figure out how to equip my own actions ), and just felt completely LOST in the game.  The maps are horrible.  As far as I can tell when you press M, what you see is what you get.  So if you are in town, you'll likely only see about half of the town, and have no idea what is in the rest.

And sure, I can see how these things could be possatives as many games nowadays hold your hand too much, but if you are going to make a large learning curve and challenge navigating, then put the info out there that is needed to learn.  NPC's should give good directions as they would in RL, there should be recipe books, and tutorials etc.

POOR EXECUTION on this one.

2) Technical Problems I wont go too much into this one, but there are still many technical issues, from disconects to UI mouse lag, etc.  It is OB, but the game is out in less than a week, so im a bit worried there.  Also, FFXI had a similar laggy feel as well, so im not expecting too much improvement.

3) Character Development Ok, so mediocre character creation.  A lot of the different options I couldn't tell what was changing on my character.  Couldn't rotate the character during creation either.  No big deal there.

I like the idea of only needing one character since you can change jobs at any time, BUT......  Having looked through the jobs available and the actions learned later on, im dissapointed.  IMO there isn't much to look forward to.  Every few levels you'll get a new ability, but they are kinda MEH!.  Sure, im guessing you can mix abilities and develop your character how you want it, but really I dont see this going so well.

Other games, (including FFXI) have "cool" classes.  Youve got stuff out there like ninjas, assassins, rogues, druids, samurais, summoners, bards, etc. etc.  These classes all end up having "cool" powers and abilities.  In FFXIV, what do you get.  Your archer can shoot arrows reapeatadly, or your Thermatuge (whatever) gets Dia.

Now I know some games have the problem of giving way too many abilities where you are getting them every level, and I know FFXI went skimpy on the abilities, but still the jobs and character development were better there.

And sure, ive only played for about 10levels, but I already have nothing to really look forward to.  No pets, no summons, no forms, no really cool abilities.

Still kinda MEH!!

I dont want to babble on too much here, as I think those are the biggest factors for me.  Its not a newbie friendly game, and it just really feels FRUSTRATING to try to play.  That alone will ward people off early on in the game life.  Then the people that tend to stay on will start to get bored with the character development and overal slow pace of the game.

So ya, im really dissapointed with this game, and wish they would have learned more from what went well and what didn't with FFXI.  There is no reason to be putting out this crappy of a game.  I think Square's technical abilites are all GREAT.  The graphics are amazing, story seems good, sound is fine, etc.  But their concept development is HORRIBLE.  This is also the games biggest downfall.  Clearly way too much time was spend on graphics, story, and sound, and playability is going to suffer big time.

So FFXIV = "A golden turd"

I agree with a couple of your points. But the game will have success. It won't flop because of those problems. It will have the people who know what they are getting into, it will have the people from FFXI that enjoy the game play style, and it will have the people who generally just tend to stick around in certain games. It probably won't top any charts for amount of users online or anything, but it won't flop.

You can move the map with I J K L. Technical issues are going to be fixed for release as SE has said at their pre event. Most of those classes you listed will be added to the game, all found in data mining. Also, if you mix some classes together, along with crafting etc... character progression is very rewarding. Do a bit of research or just press buttons in game. Everything is very easy to find, especially if you read the tutorial they have at the crystal and/or ask someone for a bit of assistance.

I'm not even going to bother with the rest of your post.

In town they have a map and if you open it you can see the names of all the buildings. Secondly I would hope that you'd know that in a weapons shop the npc there sells weapons. With each of the stands in the exchange they have signs on them that show what they are for. Or you can just look at the stand itself and see that it has food so they must be selling food.

To move the map you used JKLI same thing in character creation to move it.

Would it of killed you to read a manual? Or even just ASK someone running around. I'm sure they would of had time to explain it to you.

You wanted my time, so I played you. You wanted my money, I forked it over. You wanted my soul, I gave it willingly. Not to complain... but when do I get my end of the deal? And no, I don't want your flippin' carrot. If you can't do that give me back my youth and keep the change. Why don't you try chasing your own damn carrot for a change? I'll gladly hold the stick.

It all depends on whether they can stick to their promises for launch which is very very close. As it stands right now in the beta its a future fail game other than for absolute fans of the series that can somehow look past the glaring problems.

None of us can really judge until zero day arrives. They may have tonnes of manpower behind the scenes getting things right or they may have the normal amount, struggling to provide what the community and bosses require. We'll see.

This really isn't my type of game as it's far too PvE focused for my tastes as was XI, but i do have my fingers crossed for the people who have been waiting on it for such a long time.

Edit - i'm too drunk to read the long winded first post, yours was short n easy.

All of the numbered points OP made are known issues by SE and SE has already said that they have improved all three issues and that those improvements will be included in the release.

What you get in SE's beta isn't really a good look at the game apparently.  Most games give you a good idea what to expect but from what it looks like this beta doesn't.  Really tired so awkward language above.  Blah.

TL;DR - All of the issues OP has numbered are being fixed to some degree FOR LAUNCH

OP still has some valid points such as slow development and combat.. yeah.  Things are supposedly being fixed.. so that small list of negatives doesn't really amount to an MMO flop or a golden turd.  Bit surprising being so harsh there...

*Edit - Haven't preordered, waiting to see what is fixed / changed on the 22nd at release

Maybe someone should tell this person its still in beta phase.....

These folks are really starting to bug me.

I don't understand the claim with FFXI has "cool" classes and FFXIV doesn't. Isn't class just a set of pre-defined abilities? If you were given all the abilities, couldn't you make classes out of it?

Want ninja, equip katana and you get ninja abilities. Want samurai, equip great katana and you get samurai abilities. May be not at launch but the weapon and class are already there in the data. Let's remember that FFXI had no advanced classes at release.

So, instead of making the "cool" classes yourself, you want them to do it for you? See, this is why sand box games never get anywhere.

    Just a hint.

Dont come to mmorpg.com and look for the game that is getting the most hating focus.

Mmm, now those are some delicious features for a core gamer.

No chance FFXIV will flop, the Final Fantasy fan following allow will allow it to thrive and flourish, but honestly I think the game is a lot better than you make it out to be once you get over what has amounted to being unfamiliar with the GUI, having troubles getting it to run well on your computer, and preferring more character appearance customization.

this game is a gauranteed flop in NA.  Maybe not in asia, but definitely here.

I like the game, plus they're addressing many technical and quest related issues in the first patch at release. The only problem I do have is the lack of enemies. For a grind heavy game that focuses on solo play, you'd really expect their to be more enemies to kill.. I hope that was just a beta thing, otherwise for the next 3 weeks you're going to be camping normal mobs like you do HMs from FFXI..

Exactly how would you define, "flop?"  Last I checked, the game had over 164,000 preorders, the count was increasing during open beta, and "the PC version continues to be on track for a minimum of 200,000 launch for PC in NA only." (source).  As of two days ago, that source's source reports that indeed we're up to 184,000 preorders now, which is about 70% of the pre-orders out for WoW Cataclysm, interestingly enough.

Wish I had the time to write a game that will flop this bad. I would be retired by this time next year.

Maybe some people should realize that Open Beta is pretty much what you're going to get in a week or so, especially with regards to the issues the OP raised.

I don't think the game will garner WOW like numbers, but it will hold its own here in the west with a hardcore following.

From the start of OB to today we have had a butt load of patches. And things have changed. We haven't even been able to play the regular types of quests that FFXI was famous for.

I haven't even heard of people being able to test the Faction Quests and special guild options thus far in terms of quests either.

We also have close to no information on Companies which is FFXIV's guild system. Linkshells are just chat channels in this game.

I get a kick out of 'reviews' like this. Flop. Turd.

Then after a few months/years the 'reviewer' sheepishly admits "I was wrong" as if people were waiting for that, lol.

People usually forget 'reviews' like this the minute they are written because they usually have it all wrong.
