Originally posted by Terikan3 this game is a gauranteed flop in NA. Maybe not in asia, but definitely here.
I bet you that after a year of FFXIV in operation, when you compare it's NA numbers to any other MMO's numbers (except possibly GW2/SWTOR) for a year, you'll find that it will have a much higher retention rate than any of the others.
GW2 is free to play after purchase so it's tough to beat completely free gaming for months, even if it was a crappy F2P which GW2 won't be. SWTOR could possibly beat it on IP name, but I don't think it will. Many people playing MMOs these days DON'T like to read quests, and that's gonna be a lot of what SWTOR is about.. lore and reading.
Maybe someone should tell this person its still in beta phase.....
These folks are really starting to bug me.
Maybe some people should realize that Open Beta is pretty much what you're going to get in a week or so, especially with regards to the issues the OP raised.
I don't think the game will garner WOW like numbers, but it will hold its own here in the west with a hardcore following.
From the start of OB to today we have had a butt load of patches. And things have changed. We haven't even been able to play the regular types of quests that FFXI was famous for.
I haven't even heard of people being able to test the Faction Quests and special guild options thus far in terms of quests either.
We also have close to no information on Companies which is FFXIV's guild system. Linkshells are just chat channels in this game.
The lack of information on those points should be taking as signs of caution.
1) Not "newbie" friendly Now normally this wouldn't be a huge deal. Im all for making a game challenging, but most of it in this game seems to be out of laziness. When in town, you have NO idea what different NPC's are there for. Whats more, there are pretty much no tutorials, ( I had to figure out how to equip my own actions ), and just felt completely LOST in the game. The maps are horrible. As far as I can tell when you press M, what you see is what you get. So if you are in town, you'll likely only see about half of the town, and have no idea what is in the rest.
I'm not even going to bother with the rest of your post.
In town they have a map and if you open it you can see the names of all the buildings. Secondly I would hope that you'd know that in a weapons shop the npc there sells weapons. With each of the stands in the exchange they have signs on them that show what they are for. Or you can just look at the stand itself and see that it has food so they must be selling food.
To move the map you used JKLI same thing in character creation to move it.
Would it of killed you to read a manual? Or even just ASK someone running around. I'm sure they would of had time to explain it to you.
Very immature of you. If your going to comment on his post take the time to READ the whole post pls. Otherwise you could be taking him out of context which you are. Your bashing him for not doing more research when you haven't even givin him the respect of reading his whole post before you critized it.

not a caution per say. considering the length of the beta ( this is a fairly long open beta i must say for an mmo) which is 18 days, it would be unwise to release all of your content. people would power through it, and start releasing to much info on the internet. wiki's would be to abundent with info with takes away from gameplay. Reviews would start to circulate based on open beta ( to late for that). At least by saying that this isnt half the content that will be in the game on release date, you can keep people optomistic, and possibly decrease if not increase copies sold ( looking at it from the companies pov).

You shouldn't complain about something if you haven't even tried all the avenues to figure it out, especially simple ones like this.
You wanted my time, so I played you. You wanted my money, I forked it over. You wanted my soul, I gave it willingly. Not to complain... but when do I get my end of the deal? And no, I don't want your flippin' carrot. If you can't do that give me back my youth and keep the change. Why don't you try chasing your own damn carrot for a change? I'll gladly hold the stick.
I get a kick out of 'reviews' like this. Flop. Turd.
Then after a few months/years the 'reviewer' sheepishly admits "I was wrong" as if people were waiting for that, lol.
People usually forget 'reviews' like this the minute they are written because they usually have it all wrong.
I've a petty fantasy in my mind about when, at release, the game shows up with all the content they restricted from beta and the hardware mouse they said would be in release, people are raving on the forums how awesome the game is, and suddenly all the folk who spent all this time trying to demonize the game over small faults suddenly realize it's worth their effort to try a little harder to like it and are in agony for 8 days because it's too late to get a collector's edition.
Probably won't happen. At least, not that perfectly. Such is fantasy.

I'm actually not surprised at the lack of information with the way people played FFXI. People look into every little thing. It's better to just not bring it up. Besaid we do know that the companies will have banks, housing, special market options, and your retainers will be able to be linked to your company.
No they might not have that information just sitting on their site but this kind of information gets out regardless. Just like how i just told you.
Every time I think there isn't information on something I find there actually is in some capacity. It might not be all that I wanted at the time but it's enough. Once I start linking that information together with other things they have said it slowly comes together.
You wanted my time, so I played you. You wanted my money, I forked it over. You wanted my soul, I gave it willingly. Not to complain... but when do I get my end of the deal? Man, people are funny on here. Im not claiming to be an expert on MMO's or anything. I was just trying to voice my concerns/frustrations with this game and current MMO's as well.
Some of you have pointed out things in my post that are not actually problems. I did not know how to move the map, ok. And I was unable to find a weapon merchant anywhere. Maybe that makes me a newb, or maybe it makes the game poorly developed, that is up to you to decide.
The biggest thing, is people play games for FUN, and the last thing you want is to be frustrated when trying to get into a game. I know usually when I start a new MMO (even F2P's that aren't that good) I have to peel myself away from the game and cant wait to get back into it.
And I guess I dont know about all the future "advanced" jobs, because guess what, square hasn't made that info very accesible. Maybe that information might change my mind on this game, im not sure.
So far with FFXIV im really really trying to get into it, because there is nothing else, but its just not fun, and thats a BAD sign when first starting a new game.
And people will say "this is OB yada yada yada". Whatever, the game comes out in a week. This crap should have been sorted out MONTHS ago. Regardless, its a bad business move by Square, because im sure there are others like me that were "psyched" for this game but after being able to "test" it, things have changed. I'll continue to try to get hooked, but in reality, unless they work miracles by the end of OB, im not gonna shell out the $60-75 for this game.
EDIT: also I know its too early to really say for sure, but it seems like the community for this game is going to be HORRIBLE. Nobody in game ever talked at all, and nobody responds to shouts either. I dunno, maybe square has some hidden setting somewhere in the interface that disables socializing through chat. Maybe I haven't learned that part of the game yet.
its not about features, its about the games mechanics, its ultra dull and unengaging has confusing maps, cryptic quests and sleep inducing combat. I started a smith and all i got was throwing rocks... 30 to kill one enemy. i played non mmo ff games and they were nothing like this dullfest
But, in all honesty, I'm pretty sure FFXIV is a bit tamer in this regard. You don't put a cap on leveling and guildleve access unless you're trying to prevent making the casual players feel inferior.
Man, people are funny on here. Im not claiming to be an expert on MMO's or anything. I was just trying to voice my concerns/frustrations with this game and current MMO's as well.
I'm going to troll you for a second and ask.. "Don't you have friends to do this with?"
Some of you have pointed out things in my post that are not actually problems. I did not know how to move the map, ok. And I was unable to find a weapon merchant anywhere. Maybe that makes me a newb, or maybe it makes the game poorly developed, that is up to you to decide.
All you had to do is ask, instead of complain about it. You get more flies with honey than vinegar. To buy new weapons look for a shield and sword icon on the map and go there. I shouldn't assume that that is a universal response that people have when seeing that kind of icon. So I'm giving you a pass. Also you could of bought weapons in your towns Exchanges. Those are the NPC markets. NOT the Retainer markets. You can see the different stands that have different things on them. If you can't find a particular weapon or tool just ask in an Exchange usually someone isn't busy doing something and can help you. Or someone who is just as confused as you saw what you are looking for while searching themselves. See what that did? It made you communicate. You just made yourself a friend. Now go play with them. Even better yet if they are nice you can voice your concerns/frustrations with the game with them and they will politely listen and help you figure things out further.

If you need everything to be handed to you on a silver platter to have fun, please don't pick up any new hobbies. A little frustration is good for you. Playing FFXIV is like learning how to read. Once you get the basics everything in life becomes easier and more enjoyable.
And I guess I dont know about all the future "advanced" jobs, because guess what, square hasn't made that info very accesible. Maybe that information might change my mind on this game, im not sure.
If you had done research you would of seen the list that people dug up in the game files. There are tons. Take some time to browse some forums and look into things. I'm pretty sure SE didn't want all their future expansions exposed. Most games most games don't even have that many PHYSICAL classes offered at release or more than one mage type. So don't worry about it. Besides you can always completely change your build if you find an advanced class you like. So enjoy yourself between expansions and don't over think it. It's bad for your health.
So far with FFXIV im really really trying to get into it, because there is nothing else, but its just not fun, and thats a BAD sign when first starting a new game.
You are obviously not trying hard enough. Especially if you are just soloing. 50% of the fun in this game that I have (warning this is a personal opinion) is meeting people and interacting with others. No one likes a party-pooper.
And people will say "this is OB yada yada yada". Whatever, the game comes out in a week. This crap should have been sorted out MONTHS ago. This may sound rude but this is my personal opinion again. I honestly don't think that with the current economy, anyone who doesn't do research shouldn't be plopping down over $50 bucks for anything. End of story. Save your money and watch TV. You'll get your monies worth on one of those channels at some point.
I'll gladly hold the stick.
its not about features, its about the games mechanics, its ultra dull and unengaging has confusing maps, cryptic quests and sleep inducing combat. I started a smith and all i got was throwing rocks... 30 to kill one enemy. i played non mmo ff games and they were nothing like this dullfest
You started as a blacksmith. . . what were you expecting? To use your repair hammer to refine them? Go buy a real weapon or staff and go kill things.

OMG, I missed that the first time. The idea someone thought the pace of combat was slow because he couldn't figure out that his character was chucking rocks because the game was telling him he needs to go buy an actual weapon, that is hillarious.
Maybe he was talking about during the introductory quest. The parade in Ul'dah, the boat for Limsa Lominsa, forest for Gridania. I can see how it would be annoying throwing rocks in a combat tutorial. Not terrible, but still.

Ah, According to my horrible reading comprehension it sounded like he wanted to fight. But that's just my interpretation. Besides that if that was the case then he didn't actually read the book that is optional when you go the the Camp during the intro quest. Not only that but the types of leve's they are and what you have to do in them is clearly marked. Therefore I assumed that he wanted to fight if he was doing a battlecraft leve.

Don't worry, everything is going to be fixed on a miracle pacht for launch. Please make your preorders now, thanks.
if WoW raids take hours...ff XIV raids will take days, nobodys going to sit through that
I'm reminded of a GU Comic I saw the other day.

It's still there. It just requires you to read with your blinders off.
