I think it will succeed, more or less.  But alot depends on how much of the miracle patch occurs on day 1 and how much is really just coming in the first 12 months.  Reading their announcement I think it isnt as clear as many here are implying.

I'm not even going to bother with the rest of your post.

In town they have a map and if you open it you can see the names of all the buildings. Secondly I would hope that you'd know that in a weapons shop the npc there sells weapons. With each of the stands in the exchange they have signs on them that show what they are for. Or you can just look at the stand itself and see that it has food so they must be selling food.

To move the map you used JKLI same thing in character creation to move it.

Would it of killed you to read a manual? Or even just ASK someone running around. I'm sure they would of had time to explain it to you.

I played and i never saw any map in town to click,as i am sure many have not seen it,that is a lazy design ,never mind calling players lazy because they may have missed it,map making should have been done MUCH better.

The icons are very clear, and no you don't click on the map... you use it. You know, like a real life map. Look at where you are on the map, look at where you want to go. Head in the right direction.

Talking about seeing food so they must sell food is RIDICULOUS,that is ONLY the case if you actually wander around aimlessly and finally find that food stand, again this would have been because the map is crap so people like myself did wander around aimlessly looking for stuff. The icons on the maps are not very good for distinguishing things.Things like this are called the "INITIAL GAME EXPERIENCE"why would you want to give your potential fan base a poor starting game experience?2 nice cutscenes does not automatially attract a new gamer or keep a Square Enix fan for years.

Wander around aimlessly? There are designated areas for this ON the map. They have a lovely little red ball in the middle and they are called "XXXX Exchange". All the cities have two. Please tell me how you remember how to get around in a new town? You go somewhere a couple times and then you remember. Try using that gray matter.

Moving the map with keyboard shows again the mouse tool design for this game was awful, from the laggy mouse to no mouse use for moving map around.IMO the mouse SHOULD have been the SOLE tool to move the map around, much easier and made 100% more sense.

That doesn't show anything... It just shows that they made the game that way. I rarely use the mouse and why? Because I use a laptop and I would rather be able to talk quickly and keep doing what I'm doing. And really? The mouse lag improved a lot with the latest patch for me, or you could download the hardware mouse patch.

READ a manual? What manual?..Honestly to know of such a manual is a MUST because of poor game design skills, things like making macros, fishing, retainers ect ect, ever play games like EQ2 or heck many other games, they have a HELP button that gives answers.Sqaure Enix is not some fly by night puny game designer, they have more staff than even SOE or Blizzard, they are pretty much the biggest game producer going aside from maybe EA,maybe even bigger than them,so they have a TON of staff that can be dedicated to making all the details for FFFXIV done well.I played Runes of Magic a VERY lazy game designer, but you know what, they even took the time to create a help system, even Silkroad Online took the time to make a better help system than FFXIV,just a VERY lazy design production done in FFXIV.

What do you mean "What manual". Instead of asking that you should of googled it. You can find links to it on pretty much any FFXIV fansite. Or better yet you could of READ the 'book' they have when you have to visit Camp for your first quest. the information is there you just apparently don't know how to read... a map or a tutorial.

When i hear things like Beta, that is just BS,these individual divisions within the game design are not sitting there doing nothing, thinking "you know we won't do any game tools or design until after Beta".these guys have "supposedly" been listening to feedback for a long time and been working on every aspect of the game for a very long time,it just doesn't show.

Doesn't show? What game are you looking at? We get lots of patches and explanations with those patches. They have been steadily adding, changing, and adjusting. And it's really silly that you would even make that argument.

I have seen a lot of fanbois responses to this game's poor design.Sqaure wil lnot fix anything when people won't admit to any flaws at all, this is wha ti have seen in every thread,EXCUSES,the fanbois wil lnot admit to anythign wrong EVER,will they?BTW i HATE labelling anyone a fanbois, but when you admit to no faults ,it is like saying this game is 100% perfect and you just come across as an outright lier. The game design DOES have faults and MANY of them point to lazy or just poor game design.

People won't admit to flaws? Where have you been looking? There are lots of criticism for the game but most people on MMORPG complain without even knowing what they are doing. Leave the advice giving and complaining to people who actually KNOW what is and ISN'T in the game and how things work. In the meantime while you work to get to that level of competence try opening your eyes and educated yourself on the game.

You wanted my time, so I played you. You wanted my money, I forked it over. You wanted my soul, I gave it willingly. Not to complain... but when do I get my end of the deal? And no, I don't want your flippin' carrot. If you can't do that give me back my youth and keep the change. Why don't you try chasing your own damn carrot for a change? I'll gladly hold the stick.

It will do fine. FF11 did fine and they have features in place where FF14 will have a broader appeal than FF11. Games will come and go while FF14 sticks around.

You started as a blacksmith. . . what were you expecting? To use your repair hammer to refine them? Go buy a real weapon or staff and go kill things.

OMG, I missed that the first time.  The idea someone thought the pace of combat was slow because he couldn't figure out that his character was chucking rocks because the game was telling him he needs to go buy an actual weapon, that is hillarious.

OP: "Hey, this game sucks! I've been throwing peebles at this mob and it's not dead! I wasted 25 throws!"

OP: "Hey! Is anyone out there? Where can I get stronger pebbles? These are too weak!

They weren't ignoring him. They were just too busy laughing their arses off.

What I was laughing at is more this mental picture.

Oh, check out this class selection screen.  What would be cool class to play?  Oh, thsi is novel, I shall be a smith!

Yes, here I am in the game!  I am a smith!  This is my hammer!  With my mighty strength I shall tame this world and make it my own.

BEHOLD, YONDER STAR MARMOT, you shall be the first of my victims!!

*picks up a small rock, throws it at the marmot, does barely any damage*

What the hell?  I just threw a rock.

*29 rocks later* Finally!  Damn, this game sucks.

And I'm like, "okay, hasn't it dawned at you at ay point throughout the game that maybe smiths aren't supposed to be doing combat?  Maybe they're supposed to be, I don't know, smithing?  Wasn't the picking up and throwing a rock a pretty good clue for you?"

  • svannsvann Member RarePosts: 2,230

That had to be a joke.  I dont think you could kill even a marmot with 30 rocks.  More like 150.

Ladies and gentlemen of the FFXIV open beta...good evening.  And thank you.  Not only for your attendance, but for allowing me the opportunity to speak.

My name is Phil Davison and I am seeking all FFXIV players nomination for the position of FFXIV Official Release Reviewer on September 22, 2010.

In terms of my background, I am from the city state of Ul'dah.  Where I am serving my 13th day as self elected beta tester.  In terms of education, I have a Bachelors Degree in Sociology.  A Bachelors Degree in History.  A Masters Degree in Public Administration.  And a Masters Degree in Communication!  In terms of elections across FFMMOs, I have represented our game twice on the county ballot in both the Primary and General Elections when I ran for San d'Oria Clerk of Courts in 2006 and Bastok County Commissioner in 2009.

AND I WILL NOT APOLOGIZE FOR MY TONE TONIGHT!

I have been a San d'Orian in times good.  And I have been a San d'Orian in times bad!

Prishe of Tavnazian Safehold issued one of my most favorite quotes in the history of the spoken word.  And it is as follows:

    'I am gonna kick...'

    Excuse me.

'If you guys dont get your act together, I am gonna kick you into next Watersday!'

I'm going to repeat that so I have clarity tonight.

'If you guys dont get your act together, I am gonna kick you into next Watersday!'

This is the opportunity we've been waiting for!  The World of Eorzea is a MESS!  It is dire need of structure and guidance.  And now is the time to seize this opportunity.  With an aggressive campaign and an even more aggressive campainger!

If nominated tonight, I promise each and every person in this thread I will hit the ground running, come out swinging, and END UP WINNING!!!!

Let's send a message tonight so the people of Eorzea and to the people of Square Enix.  We're tired of business as usual!

Drastic times require what?  Drastic measures!  YES! Who said that!?  Thank you!

We will not tolerate incompetence and irresponsibility any ... longer.  Now is the time to snap the strangle-hold on the creativity of the FF Universe in two.  And I harkon back to what my fellow forum posters have said about FFXI gameplay.

'It was a problem then and it's a problem now.'

    INFESTATION!

MMO's are not Touch Football.  MMO's are winner takes all!  It always has been and it ALWAYS WILL BE!

If nominated tonight, I want to develop and expand my campaign for what I believe is the greatest strength of the Final Fantasy MMO community, and that is it's people.

I believe in the axiom all servers should be local.  And because of this belief I want to harness the thoughts and ideas of individuals that our players have.

Knowledge is power.  Lets dab into the knowledge and use it as a tool to win Eorzea.  Let's use this knowledge not only as a tool, but as a weapon.

We must win this.  If nominated tonight I WILL WIN!  And I'm going to say that again so there is no miscommunication.  If nominated tonight, I WIN!  Tell your friends, tell your neighboors, tell Randy Gonzales!

I'm coming!  Both barrels, guns loaded!  I believe in the entity and the priciples of the Final Fantasy Universe, FFMMO's, and FFXIV specifically.

If nomintated I will not hide those beliefs on my march to victory on 9/22/2010.  I can garauntee with 100 percent certainty that what you are hearing from me tonight is what everyone outside this thread is going to get over the next 7 days!

    Thank you!  Goodnight!

Disagree completely.  Folks currently playing WoW that try this game are going to immediately realize how poorly designed this game is as compared to their aging WoW.  Any subscription thefts will be temporary -- real men don't pay subscriptions to kill Koopas or whatever FF wants to call their cartoony Mario Bros. looking mobs.

I just love how people complain that there is no more exploration in games. "It's all just handed to us. Like WoW now how its own quest helper tool".   Yet, when they're thrown into a new game with no guides, no manuals or anything, and left to fend for themselves in a big open world, they come back crying like little babies begging for a map or a manual.

So which is it? Do you want to have that awesome feeling of exploring something new (be it new maps, skill systems, fighting systems, etc.)? Or do you want your hand held while you play through the entire game.  For the people who choose first answer, and then turn around and plead the second, shame on you! You have just had your Gamer card revoked.

    Good day.

Wow that’s some nice stuff your smoking.

There are things in FFXIV I like and I am going to buy the game but a WOW killer it is not.

    1.  The system requirements are way too high.  The number of people who own computers that can run this game well isn’t that large.

    2. The games interface is far from streamlined and polished enough to draw the kinds of numbers you think.

    3. The game is just too difficult to get your hands around to appeal to the vast majority of WOW gamers.  It’s stupid things to like no tool tips when you hover over a stat telling you what it does.

    4. The lack of clear questing areas makes the game way more exploration and less push to max level then WOW.

I’m not saying these things are all bad.  A bit less hand holding in a game isn’t a bad thing.  But it’s not going to take any significant numbers from WOW.  More likely it’s going to largely steal from FFXI players with some new additions scattered around from other games.

If we learned anything from Warhammer Online, it's that being better at being World of Warcraft than World of Warcraft still won't entice a significant portion of their playerbase.

In Final Fantasy XIV's case, I don't think it applies because it's made for a different genre

    • World of Warcraft - Mostly casual players, many who never played an MMORPG before.

    • Final Fantasy XIV - Although it has some concessions to make it easier on casual players, it's demoninantly focused on the core players.

This is the first FF that will be released in China.... News just came down the wire.

This game now is guarenteed to be a bigger sell than FFXI.   Big news.

Guess someone has to say it. FFXIV has way more issues and problems than APB and we all know where that  ended up. Not to mention the lower population interested and the "pc vs controller platform" crowd.

"Awww it is three days before relase and they even do not have a server around, how will they make to run this game at release day since tehre is even no game existent right now!!!" *snickers*

dead in 6 months lol HAHHAHAHHAHAHHAH!  Cause games like warhammer and Aoc are soo much better that they're actually still ticking 2 years later... and ... and FFXIV will be dead? HAAHAHAHAHAHAHHH!

We'll just have to wait and see how it turns out.  Shouldn't take that long.

    Same insults same people.

My prediction stands that this game will be dead in  5-6 months when the offerings for newer games isn't so sparse.

It's like people in the desert will drink warm gooey nasty water from cactus but they'd rather have a nice cold beer.

Half the people throwing insults will also be in a different game in 6 months.  (or less)  No doubt.

You do realize that there are 400-600k Japanese players that don't play mmo's and are waiting for this game on the ps3.... right?   Did that factor at all in your equation?

Do you know that there are 180k PC only preorders in North American alone as of Sept. 11, 2010?  when you say this game will be dead in 6 months, do you mean when the game will release on the PS3? So how many subscribers will the gamehave in 6 months... out of curiosity?

Only choujiofkono I guess he makes all his trolling posts because he wants the game all for himself like: "My treasure...."

I'd really like to say that this game will do well, but it looks like i'll be playing BFBC2 quite a bit longer until GW2 comes out.  Ive tried to think possative about this, but here are my gripes.

    1)  Not "newbie" friendly Now normally this wouldn't be a huge deal.  Im all for making a game challenging, but most of it in this game seems to be out of laziness.  When in town, you have NO idea what different NPC's are there for.  Whats more, there are pretty much no tutorials, ( I had to figure out how to equip my own actions ), and just felt completely LOST in the game.  The maps are horrible.  As far as I can tell when you press M, what you see is what you get.  So if you are in town, you'll likely only see about half of the town, and have no idea what is in the rest.

Damn, why are people so retarded... I stopped reading after the part about the map not being completely on screen when you push M..  It's like the OP never passed the 3rd grade.. Really man, is it that hard to figure out how to move the map.. Oh thats right, you never made it past 3rd grade to learn that the world will not always hold your hand...

Sorry, I'm just pissed at how people can be so ....  nvm it's pointless
