Simply pointing out that a 3 on Amazon is a bad average. People are looking for between 4 to 5.
Not enough people have written reviews for FFXIV to be relevant in my opinion. So far the game is ranked at 7.2 on this website and considering the amount of haters here I would say that is impressive.
Actually it was lower, until someone posted a "hey, look at how low it is" thread. Then by some magic it jumped. Still 7.19 is a bad score.
How is above average a bad score?
In case you don't read reviews, no publication would rate 72% as a good mark.
Prove it.
Now you are just proving how little you know. Prove it yourself, as I'm not running around for you, for something that's so common knowledge.
According to this site and Gamespot they consider a score of 7.0 to be average. The fact is you said it was a bad score, so the burden of proof lays on your shoulders.
You honestly think that something that is average is a good score? By definition alone its not. On this site alone, even with 7.19 its amongst the lowest given the majority sit between 7 and 8. It was sitting at 6.6'ish, before someone pointed out the low score. The truth in the case of this site is the scores don't really mean anything, as people will just vote to up and lower the ratings. They ping pong, as people battle it out.
However if you are trying to proved FF XIV is doing well review wise (across the board), then you are going to have an extremely hard job proving it.
Honestly I think Presby is just a paid employee of SE. (join date 7/12/10?)
I have played this game since every day of Open Beta till just 5 minutes ago.
The game is not even close to complete to be called relevant of a AAA mmo. I am a dedicated Square fanboi, I love Final Fantasy and have played every FF game and beaten it 5 different ways. This game has a horrible UI (even for a console port), huge lack of content, very repetative in all aspects of gameplay, and the developers have stated that the game wont really be complete until the PS3 launch.
(to prove I am not a troll, My pugilist is 12, the past 2 new skills I received were crappy evasion buffs that last 5 seconds and don't even cause my hero to evade, I sit in the same 3 camps doing up to 8 battleleves and finish them within 2 hours, After that I either can grind on those same mobs or log out. I have to wait another 36 hours for those 8 leves to reset. Honestly once the NEW GAME SERATONIN wears off, this game will be lame and boring)
This MMO was either rushed or they could not afford to spend any more time on developing content. I honestly feel they did not want to invest in a NEW team. They used their internal rescources (ff11 team) to rush a new MMO title. The FF11 team was sufficating from also working on FF11.
These reviews are ALL the general conception, you honestly cannot believe that once the normal version release happens people will do a 180 and love the game. Unless there is a NEW miracle patch at normal release, the same general conception will exist.
I believe the OP made a link of a 1.57/5 review site.
You are a fool for thinking that is all Troll reviews. Presby has not even played this game it seems like. Complete North American SE employee.
Level 10 Conjurer( I always go for the Wizard archetypes), so yes I have been playing and no I do not work for SE. You say this game is not finished, so I would like to know what is not finished in this game and what are you basing that opinion on. Also a handful of reviews(and there are just as many positive reviews as negative) do not constitute as a consensus. My point has been that most of what people are complaining about is their gaming preferences not actually bad core gameplay. Most of the arguments boil down to " I just don't like how they did that" or "that is not how such and such game does it". People really need to learn how to differentiate preferences from style. Just because people are complaining does not automatically mean that what they are complaining about is a bad idea.

Listen. I love ff14. I play it daily. I dont argue the bad, but I feel there is a lot of good that other MMO's dont have.
Bottom line, The mass majority, Amazon, Gamesondeck, etc etc are reviewing this game on average a 1/5.
That is the reason for this post
That is on topic
That is the bottom line.
I know there are so many fanbois (i am one) but if you cant see this then you are either PAID by SE or you are the dumbest person in the world.
sorry but the mass majority is not 200+ reviews, the mass majority is the 32,000 players on with the early access. If when the SE comes out and the reviews stay the same, then i'll admit im wrong, but the game will still have a good following to keep going strong
Age of Conan had 800k players at release. The bad reviews from players started coming in shortly after.
We see where AoC is now.
I see FFXIV going the same route, or worse.

Once again this game has not been professionally reviewed yet, so lets wait till those scores come in and stop basing our opinion on reviews from 5 people who have not even played the game(for the readers reference I am employing a Hyperbole, so please don't take what I said too seriously).

I'm not basing my opinion on anyone's review. I played from closed beta 2, so was lucky enough to discover first hand that it would be best to cancel my pre-order.
I also saw all the complaints, and the rather large thread that appeared with many cancelling. These reviews are stereotypical of what people think, and they are just as valid as a journalists. In many cases even more so, as they went out and bought the game to play not just review. The ones that are extreme (either way) are easy to identify.

It's getting to the point that watching this whole thing go back and forth is the only reason to keep reading. It's pretty entertaining no doubt.
To be fair, a score's meaning is completely subjective and depends on the source. Some sites never, ever would grade a game 100%, and others pass out 10s (100%) to the games they consider "best" on a semi-regular basis.
That said, 7.2 here is pretty damned awful. Some serious turds of the MMO world hold higher rankings than FFXIV here (Archlord {wtf?}, Mortal Online.. a whole slew of really awful F2P's etc.). To look at the rankings here, so few games fall under 5 it'd be pointless to count those, and no game reaches higher than a 9. The vast majority of games - even some of the worst listed here - rate 6 or higher. Seven would fall somewhere in the low end of that average, and that's being generous.
Gamespot is a similar guage. Auto Assault falls right in at 7.2, and if that's where FFXIV ended up, it'd have some other rather interesting titles to share that score with.
The only systems that would really make 72% look pretty good would be those using a grading scale of A to F, like grade-school. I mean, a B- wouldn't be that horrible in that system, but certainly isn't an eye-poppingly good score.
Either way, if you like the game and enjoy yourself, go nuts! No sense sitting here defending it. As every player enjoying themselves constantly proclaims; the folks who would otherwise give the game rave reviews are all too busy having an absolute blast! Go join them! To reiterate another oft-repeated retort, time will tell. Official release is in just over 24 hours, and we'll start seeing official/professional reviews within the week from those who jumped in for CE. Meanwhile, don't get angry when passers-by can't help but stare at the accident taking place (that's NOT a knock on the game, btw - just what this looks and feels like atm) that seems bound for a pile-up shortly. It's entertaining in that "I can't take my eyes off the tragedy" kind of way. Terrible, but true.

that 7.2 is based off of a handful of player reviews and should not be considered gospel. People have not been playing this game long enough to give an objective review yet.

Certainly that's a given, and by no stretch was I claiming its accuracy. However, it's the current hype meter, which once released will become the game's rating. It's hard not to notice how far it has dropped in the past week. That's got nothing to do with my opinions at all...
Edit: I mostly was referring to it because of your claim that 7.2 was "average", so I was just putting in my $.02 on it. Same for the Gamespot thing.

You are using different ideas and types of reviews. I think the majority of reviews are generally the same idea and are honest. Take my response to your questions as an example.
You asked what is not finished........
Linkshells are a rushed feature stolen out of ff11, they have stated in numerous interviews (reference ff14core.com) that this is a placeholder for a Company clan system. Linkshells is just a communcation feature, soon they are supposed to launch a fleshed out clan feature called companies. Companies should participate in the PvP system and more Social networking features within the Lodestone.
What else, Leves.
Leves are a place holder for more story, They are giving players SIMPLE and RUSHED content that are completely meaningless to the game. Currently the story only consists of a single story quest every 10 levels. They said more quests will be added but they just could not fit them into release. (this is why I said they rushed the game with ff11 team)
Um what is else?
NOTHING. There is not any other CONTENT!!!!!
If you want to look at other basic game systems we can do a full review, but bottom line is, there is no content other than a few short story quests every 10 levels and repeatable Leve quests kill x of x in 30 minutes.
The UI is terrible, and the Bazaar system is awful without some sort of Item search feature. that can give players a CLUE as to where to buy the item they want. Currently I have to sit in a market ward for 1 hour browsing every retainer in this awefully laggy userinterface.

Just a little correction. Its not a hype indicator anymore. They deleted that on the 22nd. The current rating is based soley on marks since the beginning of the head start.

Im not shure on this but i heard from a few jpn that you can't ride chocobo yet.
if anyone has info on ty, i would like to play myself but have to wait till it on ps3..
I was wondering if the FFXIV hate was a cultural thing. Asia often likes elements of MMO design not much favored in the West. In this case, it seems like the reception in Japan is at least as bad as it is in the West.
Communication = 1 star / 5 (referring to chat mechanics I'm assuming)
Event Inclusion = 1 star / 5
Payment Method = 1.5 star / 5
These averages are based off of 421 users and upon reading some of the reviews further down below, a lot of people are saying the only good thing about the game are the graphics.
I'll quote some of it:
"oβ??????????????????????????????????????????" - I cant believe a game 2 weeks from release would have such little to offer. It's a game only about graphics. (2.8 pt / 5)
"????????????????????…?" - The only praise I can truly give this game is about the graphics (1.8 pt / 5)
"?????????????????????????????????????????" - Personally, the UI is undesirable. You can't help but call the producer stupid. The map is too copied. (3.3 pt / 5) <-- this guy goes on to say he is hoping updates will improve the game. I think his 3.3 score is the most generous of them all.
I huge majority of all these posts harshly point out the same things that the Western audience is saying. Even the most generous reviews from this site basically say it's bad, but has potential if SE updates the game. Don't believe me? Well scroll down and see the little numbers next to all the posts, those are the review scores. Now, I will say in FFXIV's defense, maybe this site doesn't represent the Japanese FFXIV audience as a whole, but, honestly you would think it would have at least SOME good reviews. This entire site with 421 votes on it are almost unanimously bad...
Edit: Japanese txt doesn't copy to the forums so it shows up as ?????
While the whole thread is but a digression, bathed in websized fan-hate wars, I find your input very interesting--and that of others who try to give an indication of how the Japanese are receiving the game. So thanks a lot for taking the time to give us feedback here on your digging. And for translating!
May I ask you to link (via post or pm, whichever you prefer) most, if not all of, the websites you usually surf to on the Japanese web? I'm interested in bookmarking them, for future reference, not only on FFXIV but on gaming in general. I only took japanese for a year, so it's next to impossible for me to find the websites, although I can understand the rough ideas once I have a page to read--thanks to google translation too, of course.

Idk, Yahoo Japan under the gaming section. Gamespot has a Japanese version. If I think of a particular game, I just google it and check the first few pages of results ( in Japanese ).
I prefer Japanese TV / drama's over their games Although they make some pretty good ones. I.e. Mario games, Zelda games, FF games, etc.
Not sure if this has been posted yet, this will probably get buried and i'm not sure if anyone will see it but my this is my 2cents...
Fed the posts into google chromes translator and read a fair amount of the reviews (not all), generally the issues mentioned are pretty much spot on to what we see here but reading through I found a few things...
A) a fair amount of mention of FFXI
a few "I'm going back to WoW's"
The MMO genre isn't as new to people as it was a couple years ago, my guess would be that as gamers most people now have past experience with at least some type of MMO to relate their new experience to and so their comparing their "new" game to their "old" one and I think this is what generates alot of the negative impression that I've been seeing (my personal opinion)
There was also a couple other things mentioned....
A) Copy Paste enviroments
Made in China
We as consumers have alot more access to information than was availible even a few years ago and when I see these two things mentioned I tend to wonder if this was something the user found within the game to be an issue or if they weren't persuaded by articles they saw and read elsewhere.
I'm not trying to defend the game or discredit any reviews, they are not wrong.... this isn't wow and this isn't ffxi, there is also apparently copy/paste (I don't really notice it or look for it) and as for the made in China comments I couldn't say either way, I don't know where the game was made and as long as i'm enjoying it I don't really care.
I just needed a brief moment to reiterate how blown away I am at reading more of these reviews.
I almost wish I had the motivation to translate each and everyone one of these and post them here.
Basically if you thought some of the things said so far on mmorpg.com about FFXIV are bad, I encourage you to grab a Japanese person and show them these reviews :P
Japan Amazon (now with 106 reviews 80 of which are 2 stars and below) reviews are also insanely brutal.
I can grab a handful of posts saying how they feel SE utterly failed - from self proclaimed FF fans!
Now, I understand amateur reviews and consumer feedback articles should be taken with a grain of salt. That't no really the point. I am still just utterly dumbfounded at how harsh even Japanese customers can be towards a Japanese game lol
Ok baby birds, I'll feed you. I'll pick out a few more to translate .... one sec.
There was also a couple other things mentioned....
A) Copy Paste enviroments
Made in China
The Made in China one was about a guy who felt the CE gift ( I think its a character figure) was a cheaply made product of China. Nothing to do with the actual game
I don't get it. I've read people posting how this game is catered for the asian consumer, trying to defend how the game is lacking in pretty much every way (Grinding is for the hardcore, yo).
Now I read this.
Are it's fans in denial? I wonder. But hey, I'm hoping to see more reviews, to get a bigger picture .
There was also a couple other things mentioned....
A) Copy Paste enviroments

The Made in China one was about a guy who felt the CE gift ( I think its a character figure) was a cheaply made product of China. Nothing to do with the actual game
That leads up to another issue are the reviews for the game itself or what was included in the box.
I was kind of wondering how my translation of the machine translation was lol I was looking at these ones not sure how to properly paste them in but:
Development in China.
For manufacturing in China.
Simply funny.
Individual Overall rating: 1.00 points
What is it that the finished product? ...
I just made I can only imagine the beautiful graphics or Kusoge
Can take on only the beautiful graphics of the landscape as vividly and smooth
A strange sense of direction at the same place long
Also like bad surprises for users of the development approach
But bear with FF, FF just a funny name can not even read without specific job
Distribution by saying that China was satisfied that I see Oh, why so far
Do you not understand the way the Chinese users ?Bita
Chinese user Japanese user why the game from Japan
I have to avoid
I wish they stop Then again delivered to Japan
I feel I just wish we did abroad
Not quite worth it to pay valuable time and money
Individual Overall rating: 1.40 points
While domestic virtually every MMO from China claims the MMO.
Made of very incomplete and a poor game itself is not quite what was recommended.

Oops, you're right. My bad! You're correct :O

I was wondering if the FFXIV hate was a cultural thing. Asia often likes elements of MMO design not much favored in the West. In this case, it seems like the reception in Japan is at least as bad as it is in the West.
A disappointing failure of game design, IMO.

The chat functions are perfectly fine, and actually add to immersion and community.
Region/trade/global chat system only screw mmo's over. The only thing they provide is chuck norris jokes.

I'll pick out a few more to translate .... one sec.

The Made in China one was about a guy who felt the CE gift ( I think its a character figure) was a cheaply made product of China. Nothing to do with the actual game
Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.
