Then daoc had the first public quests in pvp. (that i know of.) CAlling daocs or wows very few all people on server rewards for part of the populatiosn actiosn a public quest is a joke btw.
I don't know who actually had the first public quest mechanics. Maybe DAOC or Ultima, I don't know. Still both predate warhammer which most people credit with some sort of never before done mechanic in mmos.
Wow had events that spawned monsters in a small area where anyone could participate to complete to further the event. Kill 100 undead, kill the 4 lieutenants that would spawn and then the boss. Maybe it was gather some crystals or click some things. Other games had that well before wow did.
Yea Uo and AC both had this feature in place 10+ years ago, with town invasions and whatnot.. Eq also implemented some similar events..
Well, I'm enjoying the quests now. Their clever use of phasing contributes for some immersion as you progress not only in the quest but in that area phase.
Hillsbrad Sluge Fields for example, in its last phase gets completely cleared of enemy mobs.
Sure, we have GW2 coming that completely discards quests, but I will enjoy what's available now instead of building expectations for over 2 years reaching such a high degree that you get disappointed no matter what.

I have to ask.. People praise this "phasing" as some second coming of Christ.. People say it allows the story and world to evolve so when something is killed, it stays killed.. hence the phasing..... So I have to ask.....
WTF does your 2nd toon, 3rd toon and every other toon you make do when they are goign thru those zones...... OH WAIT, the mob is alive again until that toos completes the phase quest line.. Phasing is a lame quest mechanic to give you the false impression you had ANY effect on the world.. ha ha ha..
I fail to see the immersion when your alts have to follow the same breadcrumb trail..

The same when I created another character in Mass Effect, Dragon age or any other game out there. I played the same story with another character. So I don't see what your problem with that is. Plus phasing allows for so much more creativity in storytelling.
I'm sorry but I fail to see what is so revolutoinary or new about this. I have seen this same kind of thing in other MMO's already. Essentially you do a quest step, go off somewhere to do another step, you come back and something has changed. Not really that new, I can think of at least a few quests in LotRO that do this same sory of thing.

Blizzard did it again... but look on the bright side, now those other lazy mmo developers have to pull their fingers out and make their games even better too .. right?
Regadless of how Blizzard is implementing their so called "innovations", we should all stand back and acknowledge the fact that they are beginning to open their ears and eyes.
Yes the dynamic world we all so desire may not be compatabile with their coding, but they are doing what they can.
Therefore I believe it will be safe to say that should they ever decide to make another fantasy mmorpg that it will be over the top (not holding my breath).

I have only a few things to say regarding Blizzard's quests.
Some of them are good. Most of them are generic. The fourth time you do ANY of them....let me repeat....ANY of them....they are bland and lifeless. Does this apply to repeating quests in any game? Pretty much yes, so I'm not just picking on Blizzard here. And phasing does not do jack shit where alts are concerned. Phasing works for ONE character. Great. It's SWELL the first time you see it's implementation. After that....it's just the same ol' same ol'.
I think GW2 is TRYING to do something to stave off this boredom. I don't know how well it will work, but we'll see. By giving each character a "personal story," they are making PART of the questing, at least, be different for each alt. At least this is an ATTEMPT to address the problem of rolling alts and having to do the EXACT same thing again. An ATTEMPT is more than any other company has chosen to do so far.
I have 5 level 80s in WoW. I obviously enjoyed the game at SOME point, but I will say this now....I find WoW about as interesting as washing dishes at this point in time. I re-subbed to see the world changes and what not, and I still can't get excited about it. It's just more and more and more of the same dumb ass shit, from what I see. And I'm a little pissed that I spent 15 bucks I couldn't really afford to spend at the moment, and which could have been put to better use re-subbing to EQ2 for a month. At least I would have gotten my money's worth there. Alas....I just couldn't control my curiosity to see the new areas. *sigh*
In my opinion, they've not changed ENOUGH of the world. I think I was expecting like NOTHING to be the same, but that isn't the case.
which could have been put to better use re-subbing to EQ2 for a month. At least I would have gotten my money's worth there.
See thats my problem too, but eq2 i didnt see as any different, not to mention the respawn of mobs made it feel even more like a conveyor belt.
See, I was thinking more about the crafting in EQ2. I have 3 lvl 90 crafters, and I have so much fun with my 90 carpenter and my houses. The ONE thing I can always have fun doing in EQ2 is crafting and decorating, and I know....not everyone is into that, but I AM. I love it. And I wish to hell I could have gotten a grip on my curiosity about the new Cataclysm changes and just remembered how completely sick I've become of the game. But no....I just HAD TO SEE.
I'm obviously not mad at anyone but my self.
And....I don't hate WoW.....I've just played it for too long and gotten utterly and completely burnt out. I'm not sure why I thought that would change, but....I did. I think once you TRULY burn out on a game.....there's really no going back.
I never played eq2 that long. Capenters build houses? Nice.
I wish they made games out of psuedo lego pieces so we could mix and match to make the perfect game :-)
I know we're getting a bit off topic, but I'll pull it back on in a sec.
Carpenters build FURNITURE, and all types of decor for houses like paintings, rugs, light fixtures, etc. The houses themselves are pre-built, you just decide where you want to live and in what size of house.
I too wish we could "piece together" the perfect game for each of us individually. LOL That would be sweet. Because to be honest, mine would be a wide mixture of pieces parts from quite a few different games.
On topic:
Some company somewhere should come up with a quest system that is tailored on the fly to the pre-determined character traits of the characters we make. They should allow us to come up with a scripted personality and background for our character and then have the NPC's coded to somehow recognize all that information about a character that approaches and give out quests based on that. That way we could make all our alts have different little personalities and backgrounds and each one would have an entirely different journey because of it.
WARs public quests and GW2s Dynamic quests is a very different thing, that is something no one else has done before.
Wows motto have always been "Do what others have done before but better". If they have made or not is up to everyones opinion, but it is at least clear that they have improved Wows quests a lot.
This is incorrect. Wow had public quests way back in vanilla. The gate opening event for AQ and Naxx were a public quest, just like the undead & elemental invasions.
There are several games that had public quests before warhammer. I think UO was the first with the heroic system (I'm fuzzy on the details).
Warhammer gets so much credit here, because they overused the idea to the point that public events replaced almost all of the traditional content found in mmos and they put some open shared loot system. Other than that, public quests had been done long before warhammer, just not to the extreme warhammer did them.
Oh geez, you didnt just call the opening for AQ for a public quest?
1 guy picked up a quest, and his guild helped him doing it, and it's a public quest all of a sudden? I guess we could say that WoW stole their "public quest" system from the bunch of mmo's before them, where 1 person could get help to do a quest.
I think you're confusing public quests, with several people planning to do a quest and help eachother with it, Public quests in WAR is just that, public, since everyone can walk in and get some of the action, we didnt let anyone outside the guild do anything for us during the aq event, not quite public stuff is it?

I think you are the one confused. The opening of the gates of AQ required a fair amount of people to do (not 1 person and his guild).
It was something that the whole server was involved.

It's better than no change at all :P
Most MMO offer little to no change in their environment even if you complete most quests. 'Phasing' is an improvement while questing in a theme park world.
Other than that, your problem is not really with the phasing technology, but rather with the quest system offered in most (if not all) theme park mmo at this time.
Other players still see the murdered man alive... and you don't even realise you're being "phased" while still viewing other players.
So then, more than ever, you are playing a single player game. A step backward IMO, but to each their own.
Yo!!! Who put this sp rpg in my sandbox!!!!!
Yep, the MMO I want to play (and probably is a long time in coming) is one where If the man gets murdered, he stays murdered and we all see him dead at the same time. He never respawns, never comes back, and its a one time, permanent event in the game world.
I know its a content nightmare to try and create, but I can hope that one day we'l have games to play like this.
Probably never going to happen, for the very reason you cite. With content needing to be for everyone, they really can't do that very well, at least not in an open world sense. With instancing, or phasing, they can get pretty close.
I have played WoW off and on since shortly after release and I haven't played in about a year, but I must say when I experienced the phasing in WOTLK I thought "OMFG this is AWESOME"! But that just what I thought. I just which they could make a massive single server game.

"Phasing" is everyone, artificially and generally isolated, running through the same set of pre-defined linear stories. I find much more "creativity in storytelling" with what the players bring to the table with their dynamic and spontaneous interactions with one another, be it to group, compete, cooperate, rescue, be rescued, escort through dangerous territory, craft, trade and all that other great stuff.
Phasing to me, and to many others (as I read this thread), is not a step forward, but a huge step backward to the first single player games that came out in the 1980's and 1990's.
An MMO gives you a world; use it. Phasing doesn't fully use the game world, at least not in all the ways that it can.
Well ultimately everyone ends up in the final "phase". I think it is a great way to tell a story through quests of how a certain event transpired and truly immerse players in the story. I for one do not like instancing, but I think these are two totally different things as the players exist in different time frames rather than different instances of the same thing.

This is what GW2 developers are trying and most probably will do... You pick a story which will be background of your character and it will set up who this character is, so when he starts the game the quests will not be the same, and as you advance through the game you get different stuff going on and you make the world different, your own story is different from any other character YOU make unless you pick the same background story (which is not likely because it really offers lots of options to choose from). So kinda each character you make will be unique in his own way, will it be the story you pick for your character to start with, or will it be the decisions and actions you make during the game itself. So I can't wait till GW2 gets out to public, but what I've seen the game will kick ass and most probably will mean a new revolution of mmo games. So blizz will have to do much more than just making orgrimmar bigger, changing the old azeroth and making new quest lines. Big thumbs up from me for GW2.

No you aren't and neither is anyone else, otherwise you wouldn't continue showing up on an MMORPG forum making idle threats. If all that made these threats were serious you'd just do it, not post on a forum about it, ( I don't know, maybe you are trying to get people to say "No please don't go"). If you all were serious you'd just quit playing MMO's, quit following MMO's on websites like this, and certainly you'd finally stop bitching about MMO's.

/e runs up to punt your butt thru the goal post........... GOOD.. 3 PTS
He He He.. I'm glad I kept my curiousity at bay.. I'm back to playing EQ2 a lot more often since golf season and summer are over.. I have a new main now.. a 44 Inquisitor.. Actually I just got done grouping up with Boss and a few other guildies in doing mid 40 to 50th level quest.. I'm so rusty in being a group healer.. LOL Plus my hotkeys aren't set up for group play either..
OH.. I have a new home.. a 3 room medium size house, that I'm working on.. but I think instead of going overboard on that, I'm trying to come up with enough status points and items so that I can get one of those big 5 room homes.. I'll have to have Boss craft me some tier 7? items so my rent reduction goes down..
I love sandbox features that allow me to do hobbies or colecting, without always feeling the need to grind hack and slash.. I can tell there is a huge difference between EQ2 and WoW where leveling is concerned.. For the number of hours I spent getting to 44th level, crafting to 41st level and doing other odds and ends.. If I was on WoW that toon would be max level with max professions.. EQ2 is about the journey, not a rush to end game

QFE, kinda sounds like it would be taking the massively multiplayer experience out of the equation. This kind of mechanic would do nothing but essentially alienate a large portion of the playerbase. If it's to be a Massively Multiplayer game than everything should be potentially available to everyone to experience for themselves, not watch or hear about someone else doing it and then never being able to experience it themselves.

Massively Multiplayer doesn't mean everyone is sitting in the same theater and watching the same movie. It means everyone is in a shared world.
So, if someone takes on the big red dragon, everyone "in the area" can see that. Naturally, someone two zones away might miss the action, but it is their choice to be where they are.
A static but shared world will always be a more immersive (and fun) experience than some linear themepark ride with phasing and cutscenes. Don't believe it? Watch WOW numbers a month or two after this expansion.
Everytime WoW comes out with an expansion, people spew the same line. "Watch WoW numbers in a month or two after this expansion".
The only thing that might drop the numbers on WoW would probably be the release a GOOD MMO. Which hasn't happened yet.

I agree and what probably will drop the numbers of wow players will be release of guild wars 2, which if it will be like they promise it will might be the end of wow as we know it today

To the caterpillar it is the end of the world, to the master, it is a butterfly.

Probably never going to happen, for the very reason you cite. With content needing to be for everyone, they really can't do that very well, at least not in an open world sense. With instancing, or phasing, they can get pretty close.
Hell hath no fury like an MMORPG player scorned.
I have played WoW off and on since shortly after release and I haven't played in about a year, but I must say when I experienced the phasing in WOTLK I thought "OMFG this is AWESOME"! But that just what I thought. I just which they could make a massive single server game.
If GM had kept up with technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25 cars that got 1000 MPG - Bill Gates

Yeah, that's great for the 5 people who got to see him get killed. Content designed for the select few....no thanks.
