Take away questing in Rift and what do you have left? Not much.
If you find that kind of questing enjoyable that's fine, to each their own. But I find it a bit dishonest to say it's not a linear game, it's extremely linear. The game holds you by your hand and leads you from quest hub to quest hub. If you were to take questing out of Rift, there would be little left to do.
Rift takes linear to a new level, or depth. It's just so obvious when you're playing it's ridiculous. The game leads you from quest hub to quest hub and a very obvious manner. Some people might like games like that and that's ok but let's be real, Rift is indeed very linear.
And best of luck to you too, I hope you enjoy your time in Rift.
Little? exploration, crafting, collection, gathering, rifts, invasions, pvp, dungeons all this is little? wow. Sorry dude but your standards are way too high. Its quite clear you have made up your mind eventhough it has been explained to you in 10 different ways that RIFT is not linear.
All you do is keep repeating yourself that Rift is taking linear to new level yet you fail to explain how. All you have is 'quests are linear ' excuse to fall back upon everytime. Guess what RIFT is not just about questing. no one is denying that quests are not linear but game on whole is quite open for players.
Nobody needs to "explain" anything to me, I'm quite capable of coming to my own conclusions. I'm a MMO vet of many years, starting with UO, so I know what linear is/means. We might disagree on what the definition of linear is but I'm not the only one who labels Rift as linear. I've played many theme park MMOs with varying degrees of linearity but Rift has taken that to a new level.
Now, crafting is bland, basically "borrowed" from WoW. Gathering, same. Invasions, eh, I found rifts to be boring and tried to avoid them. PvP hasn't been implemented yet but I can't see that being fun with the combat system as is. Dungeons start around level 20 which might be fun if the combat was fun and not clunky.
But hey, we all have our opinions and like different things. Anyone is free to pick up this game if they like, or not.
You clearly do not. Moreover, what you should have said is that there is plenty of things to do out of questing just that you find it boring. Instead you are trying to make everyone believe that there is hardly any content to out of quests. Which is wrong. Alteast be honest with your opinions.
Try to level up just by 1) turning in collections 2) fighting Rift invasions, and let me know how that works for you compared to questing.
if you read my earlier posts i have already mentioned that i leveled through Rifts, invasions and exploring to look for tougher mobs to kill. Its not a common knowledge but you get a bonus XP when you have more than 2 players in your party. The xp is much better and faster compared to questing.
Now after reading the masses of comments, complaints and concerns.. I assume you have to buy the box in order to play and then pay a monthly to continue.. I have to ask.. Do you think that marketing this game as a P2P was worthy? Do you think it will compete?
I did not play the Beta.. But i have a few questions..
About the Classes, they said that you can have up to 3 souls. I know that each calling has its own weapon sets to use, but do the classes underneath the callings rely on different weapons?
The reason i ask is because in alot of games with the "multi-class" feature you have to switch weapons/armor just to be able to use the skills of the other class, which becomes a hinderance. if I am a Champion and as my second soul I pick a Reaver, must i keep switching weapons just to be able to use Reaver skills?
Another issue i am having just from what Ive read on the website is the 2 faction thing.. When will companies learn that with 2 factions, population balance is usually the achilles heel, frustrating people in the process.. Even with Rifts (that so far, people seem to say are actually "static" encounters that have randomized timers) appearing to add a third presence, if PvP does not have enough effect from this NPC faction it will not stop the overload of players on one side totally dominating the other. This was one of the bigger problems of WAR.
Although it does sound like a themepark MMO (with a different "storyline" at each quest hub you move to), I DO find the customization to be refreshing.. I may try to get a beta invite, hopefully i get to see things for myself.. I am not a fan of the $60 "buy-before-you-try" plan and after blowing enough on P2P's that don't pan out after the first month, I really need to beta this game to be sure of a purchase and subscription..

Nevermind,, Paradoxy beat me to it.
Interestingly, that individual also claims dungeon XP is faster, yet I swear you can do Iron Tombs for an hour and not even get half a level, yet any competent individual can easily get more than that by questing.

Beta 3 will let you experiment with more variety of souls, as far as switching weapons during combat i am not sure about that info yet. However i can assure you that this games PVP won't be plagued by population imbalance issues of WAR because RIFT is not a RVR game. There will be no zerging of any kind. So no dominating side per say just better players and team work.
Devs already mentioned that RVR model is too much hard work and difficult to balance so they are not going that path.

I got myself to level 8 and then my beta time was over really just three days for beta... I'm not glued infront of my computer screen you know.
I really didn't feel the urge to play anymore than I did so for me Rift is a failure but it can be worth to play it casually say twice a week or so but probably not.
Actually, I've played all of those titles except for Aion and found them much more enjoyable than Rift. AoC probably bothered me the most with all the instanced zones but it still didn't have the linear feel as bad as Rift does. I played those three titles a good while but quit Rift 15 mins. into beta 2 so I wouldn't say I'm burned out, just not falling for the old tricks any longer. It's becoming easier to spot these issues with each new release and thankfully I've saved a good deal of cash from learning early on.
However, I'm sure some people will enjoy Rift and play for a long time.
I played them all too, and some of them I immensely enjoyed, but I'm telling you: it's all in your head.
Aion? Oh, come on, did you level several alts on one side? Really? Then you must have noticed you doing the exact same quests to leave your starter area and area after that. Heck, you're even being steered towards the same segmented area each time, guidelined towards the next area appropriate for your level, you don't even have a choice in that.
AoC? Same starter area, only maybe 2,3 questline options while leveling, nothing more to be said about it. Enjoyable, but don't pretend it wasn't linear.
WoW and LotrO have the luck of more than 2 starting areas, but even there anybody can notice after leveling several alts that you're following the same much treaded quest paths that you've walked before. But sure, the several starting areas gives those the illusion of less linearity.
If you don't like Rift and noticed that you've grown bored of playing the same type of MMORPG's, then sure, nothing preventing you from skipping this one. But thinking that Rift is more linear than those others, that's just an illusion. You may cling to that belief, of course, no problem with that, but the facts contradict it and show it for the subjective perception that it is.
The ease with which predictions are made on these forums: Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release]. Anyone still clinging to 2011 is deluding themself at this point."
I guess that people that think Rift is linear because of its questing also think other current MMORPG's are linear, because let's be realistic, shall we: every non-sandbox MMORPG that makes use of quests has the players following a directed path if you do nothing but the questing, WoW, LotrO, Aion, AoC, others, they all work like that.
Some people should just accept that they've burnt out on the genre, and accept that their boredom with the genre will not just fade away: that so called 'newness' and 'innovation' they're so desperately looking for, they'll never get back that initial bliss and enjoyment of those first months or year that they started playing MMORPG's.
So anyone looking for something different is "burned out on the genre"?
That is BS. The genre needs to have different games offering different things for it's players. Rifts is fine enough and there is room for traditional games as well as innovative ones but I have been playing MMOs since the first real one: Meridian 59. And not since then have the games been so similar as now, with the exception of Eve and a few small indie games.
Rifts fill an part in the genre but so will games that offers new things as well. The genre needs new blood and new things to offer it's players, or it will eventually die out. You can only do the exact same things so long.
Don't lecture people who been in the genre since it started on how the genre is and just dismiss them as burnt out. Games like GW2, TOR and WoDO will offer a lot for the genre in the future.
The genre don't really need to change but it must offer more diversity if it want to grow further. There should be sandboxes and themeparks, easy games and difficult ones, traditional ones and innovative ones. If not the genre have no future and will slowly bleed itself to death. I played computer games since '84 and seen genres come and go. The ones that cant evolve eventually disappears because young people don't want to do the exact same their parents did and sooner or later will 99% of the people burnt out on anything.
Online roleplaying games can be so much.
But as I said, Rift plays a role of 2011s lineup, it is the choice for the players who want a familiar game. But so do games like TOR, GW2, TERA and possibly TSW as well (WoDO will probably release 2012 or even later but you never know).

It's no illusion. It's not "all in my head"...well it is but not as you mean it.
I've played theme parks recently that were very enjoyable but Rift just plain falls short. It's just not a fun game compared to what's on the market. You might disagree (or agree for that matter) and that's fine, we're all entitled to our opinions without them having to be illusions.

It's a shame more people like him don't actually work in the industry.

Point is, if you don't do the quests and follow the path you really gimp yourself until you have grind enough rifts to kit yourself out. The blue items start at level 15 with weapons that are not really that better than green quests items you can get by doing quests.
LOL go kill mobs to level and see how far you get with getting armour or gear.
Oh wait you can grind faction for the university which will take you ages to actually get enough rep to buy those shiny level 20 items.
And let's not forget the FPS,it's bad to say the least.
Top PCs getting 20FPS on ultra or med to high?
Make sure you have an nvidia card because this game does not like ATI.
It's pretty clear you quit after Beta 1 and didn't even try Beta 2, or weren't invited back. Beta 1, yea, people had FPS problems. However, in Beta 2, my FPS went up to 60 at all times.
The blue items were much better than any quest green I saw for both factions. I got the level 18 2handed sword and it raped anything I found from quests and even one weapon I got in Iron Tombs. Stop exaggerating nonsense to make your points valid.
Just because your fps had been fixed, doesnt mean that ours did. I had graphics to minimum and my fps was 15-25.
So anyone looking for something different is "burned out on the genre"?
Nope, just a number of them.
Come on, you can see it in the trends of their posts: not being able to enjoy MMORPG's that much anymore, pining about that initial bliss they felt with their first MMORPG and those first months and how they don't feel it anymore, projecting their hopes and wishes onto the next MMORPG, claiming all wild ideas and hopes how this new MMORPG will be, and then the disappointment and frustration that also these new MMORPG's don't take away that pit of boredom and jadedness that they've been feeling for a long time now when playing or just hanging around in MMORPG's.
I never said that everyone that wants something different is burntout on the MMO genre, that's what you interpreted. But yes, after watching for months the same trends and comments on these forums, I'm pretty sure that a number of those posters have burnt out on MMORPG's and MMORPG mechanics, they've only not acknowledged it yet to themselves.
They think that innovation and newness in MMORPG's will bring back that feeling of bliss again to them, but my guess is that some of those people will discover that this also will not be enough. Because there are enough different MMORPG's around with sandboxy or just different game mechanics, so why aren't they playing and enjoying those?
The rest of your post, I pretty much agreed with it, even more, they were all arguments I've been posting myself in posts of mine.

Hehe, I try. Sometimes it works, sometimes not, it was worth a shot (damn, failed... )

Oh, I wasn't in disagreement that you didn't enjoy it much or found it linear. After all, differing opinions, tastes and perceptions.
I disagreed that those other MMORPG's were not linear or that Rift was more linear than all those others. Which is simply untrue, for Aion and AoC I could perhaps give the best examples of this, which I did.

I'd say that the observation that his FPS got fixed, means that something was changed or fixed between the betas, hmm, don't you think?
Or said otherwise, just because your fps wasn't fixed, doesnt mean that nothing was fixed or changed related to fps after beta 1.

Has anyone mentioned the weapon holster/unholster animation? it is really laughable that a 2011 game has such a poor animation desing. Not to mention the boring spell animation on melee/ranged/casters ( i didnt like 90% of them, dont know about you). Anyway, this game made me resub to wow after 2 years. Enough said.
The game is VERY casual friendly . I would describe it as almost WoW friendly. Which is not a bad thing but for competitive gamers it is as it gets old fast. There is a lot of kill x amount of things to get x amount of items. There is a lot of running back and forth. Though the quests do lead you to newer places but not in one general direction. Sometimes you can have quests that will send you to two different places.
The rift system is somewhat enjoyable but gets old FAST, hopefully though with the addition of pvp it will make it more interesting. Rift system also sometimes messed with your quests forcing you to partake in the rift event.
Mobs are somewhat easy mode to be honest, you can take on a few mobs at one time though some places they are clustered together making you to actually think of what you are going to pull where you are standing and other things. A lot of button smashing to be honest (a lot is kinda an understatment).
Animations are kinda dull at times.
Personally for me I do not like the art style but that is a personal opinion. The armor is boring and does not make you feel all cool and stuff. I defiantly did not bother checking out my armor whenever I got a new piece maybe it was just because of the low armor so who knows what the higher lvl armor looks like though from screenshots I got the whole LOTRO armor kinda concept feeling.
Server side performance is EXCELLENT probably one of the best I have seen in a long time. Handled having a lot of players in one area really well and also whole the particle affects.
All in all it is a casual friendly game and does require a lot of moving around in the world to lvl up if you are not partaking in the rift events. It is a good game at best nothing spectacular or innovative that will keep you interested you for long. It does what it does the best though so kudo points for that.
First thought: Reminded me of WAR visually right off the top . . . WoW and WAR had a baby someone said before. This is about right.
The only thing that stuck out was the souls for character customization. . Rifts themselves are just like PQs in WAR. . great game. . just felt like I had done it before.
In beta I said it was a mix, style-wise, of Vanguard/WAR. At first I did not like the style but now I do. As for soul shards (and a lot of trolls argued) it's really a talent tree except you can do 3 at once, same setup but others disagreed. And I am 100% with you on the Rifts, they are just like PQS but they are randomized. Will I purchase at launch? Maybe, I would like to try the next beta to figure that out.
Sorry but it does not resemble anything to do with Vanguard other than it has quests and elves dwarf and humans,Vanguard makes rift look like play school.
It's reminds me of a FTP game and a cross between WAR-WOW-AION, not even close to Vanguard. The world is linear and the quest are some of the worst handhold on rail i have ever seen.
The cities..lol what cities, you mean the palace with some static mobs and copy&paste building with static NPC standing outside closed doors that the player can't enter.
The soul system IMO is all over the place and RIFTS are just a FFA to see which group can tagg the most mobs for drops to spend on potions and equipment. After you have done rifts a few times it's just becomes a bore and will just be a grind.
I can say that RIFT brings nothing new to the table other than RIFTS that really seem pointless at the moment. If i wanted WAR or WOW i can go play them because they do a better job at it.
No way in hell should this MMO have a SUB,it should be FTP.
GW2/SWTOR will eat this poor excuse for a MMO with shiny graphic for breakfast.
you're going to tell me it doesn't resemble Vangaurd at all but it reminds you of Aion? Your entire post had some rude context to it so I guess I should not be surprised.
When i say AION i mean graphically not game-play. The game play reminds me of WAR-WOW but each of those games does it better.
You don't like what i am saying then bad luck.
What?!?
First: Aion??? I am still puzzled by that one
Second: Nothing about this game looks anything like WAR or WoW, Nothing. (someone said that the UI reminds them of WoW, maybe that I guess) if there are any similarities with War (like PQ's) or WoW (its an MMO maybe?) thats it, a faint similarity that are simply the same type of similarities you will find in every single fantasy based MMO.
People keep saying "the game is too linear" ..... and "you just go from quest hub to quest hub". My question to that is .... what is the alternative? The only game that comes to mind that does not use quest hubs is EQ1, and in EQ1 the zones were level range specific so really you were grinding in a linear fashion.
Now, what if a game came out using EQ1's old quest style, which was no indicators or "!" over the head. You had to type to the NPC using keywords based on what he said to you. If a game brought this back the tears would flow on the forums like a waterfall. People would be stomping their feet over how each city should have level appropriate quests, and ways to tell if they have one for you.
I guess what I'm getting at is people keep bashing games for being too linear ... but how do you make a game that involves levels without having level appropriate hubs/areas?

Third: Aion?!? really? Aion ?!?
Maybe not Aion, but if you cant see the design/graphical similarities to WAR , then you obviously havent played WAR.
As far as grouping goes, there's no reason to. Rifts are full of solo players, no need to group. And explore for what reason? There's nothing out there except the next quest hub and mobs that don't drop anything except junk. Loot drops are very rare. Exp is low. What's the point in exploring when there's nothing to explore?
Most of the players don't even know about bonus XP in groups. those who know it they enjoyed grouping. I was in party of 4 most of the time and leveled to 20 smoothly. The only quests i did were for souls. other then that all we did was explore the map.
As far as reason for exploring...you can get artifacts, books, tokens etc for your personal collection. Moreover if you are a gatherer you need to explore places to collect materials. Also for adventurous type to go out and see if they can take on tougher mobs. Plenty of reasons to explore. Also once again you are wrong on loot drop. infact green gear drops frequently and blue on ocassion from tougher mobs. No MMO forces players to group up out of dungeons, its upon you if you want to group up or not.
Bonus or not, combat is just not enjoyable in Rift. I can't recall a combat system so clunky and empty, just didn't work.
Artifacts and such can be found anywhere but just go into a collection book. I don't find that exciting enough to venture out to find more. And once again, it doesn't matter how tough the mob is if the combat is lackluster. And if you think loot dropped frequently I don't know what to say. Sufficient loot was provided by quests anyway so no reason to go out and look for some anyway. By the time you end up finding loot, you could have done 5 quests and replaced almost all your gear anyway. Questing and quest hubs is where it's at in Rift, linear to the core.
I get it, you don't want to do anything because you found it boring. Fair enough. But game is not based on questing alone. So you can keep repeating yourself over and over gain, doesn't mean its true. yes quests are linear but is RIFT linear? nope. Two different things here. Atleast the game offers you options and incentives to group up and level. But if someone just finds its boring, there is nothing anyone can do to change their mind.
Hope you find the game you can enjoy in near future.
Take away questing in any MMO these days and what do you have left?
Not much.
How can you ask that question without indicting every MMO that's been released in the last 6 years??? It is certainly not a Rift specific phenomenon now is it?
I do agree the QUESTING in Rift is linear, and I too dislike the way they steer you from one hub to the next but that's been happening for a while now. But, if you dislike the train, you can always get off...

I completely agree. It is one of the most linear games I ve ever played. This is why I found it boring, and had a hard time even wanting to log on.
Rift is the epitome of a linear game. I find it odd to believe otherwise, and frankly, I put that kind of denial on the same level as claiming WoW is a sandbox.
There's nothing wrong with enjoying a good linear game, but don't make it out to be something it simply is not.
And yet again no one explains how Rift is linear. Would be nice if you explain how just to make things clear. Otherwise you are just repeting same one line over and over again.
The game has so few quests. I had to do every single quest and then still grind 1-2 bars every lvl after 15. The replayability when you make an alt is 0, you have to do once again the exact same quests especially since each race starts at the same fucking place, hub after hub. All in all, boring.

Third: Aion?!? really? Aion ?!?
Maybe not Aion, but if you cant see the design/graphical similarities to WAR , then you obviously havent played WAR.
Played War for about 25 minutes (Huge DAoC fan and was planning on War being the next great game) but it was the graphics design that killed it for me, I spent $49 to play the game for a total of 25 minutes. So if there was anything remotely close to War in the graphics design of Rift, I am thinking that would have jumped out at me.
Now, maybe further in the game in War the graphics make a huge change and look more like Rifts, and if thats the case, please let me know so I can try War again.

Ok, not going to argue with your eyes. But it looks exactly the same for me and a lot of people.
EDIT: They have the exact same enviroment/character design and are the same dull. The only difference is that rift has a bit improved graphics overall.

Please allow me to correct myself, I just youtubed a bunch of WAR videos, and I do see what people mean with the similarity of Rift graphics and WAR. That is not what I remember from my 25min on WAR. I guess maybe over the last year or so my taste have changed a bit (?)
Anyways, I think I am going to turn my WAR account on and give it a second look until till Rift beta this weekend...
Comments
if you read my earlier posts i have already mentioned that i leveled through Rifts, invasions and exploring to look for tougher mobs to kill. Its not a common knowledge but you get a bonus XP when you have more than 2 players in your party. The xp is much better and faster compared to questing.
Nevermind,, Paradoxy beat me to it.

Im picking on WoW btw because its the beast that made all of this possible
I got myself to level 8 and then my beta time was over really just three days for beta... I'm not glued infront of my computer screen you know.
I really didn't feel the urge to play anymore than I did so for me Rift is a failure but it can be worth to play it casually say twice a week or so but probably not.

Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release]. Anyone still clinging to 2011 is deluding themself at this point."
Your Jedi mind tricks won't work on me young padawan.

Just because your fps had been fixed, doesnt mean that ours did. I had graphics to minimum and my fps was 15-25.

Maybe not Aion, but if you cant see the design/graphical similarities to WAR , then you obviously havent played WAR.
