To me its cartoony but not like wow. Comparing this to wow is like comparing Marvel comics to DC comics. They are both comic books but one is way more detailed. But its graphics are nothing at all like eq1 or vanguard.
Game is not linear, you don't only need quests to progress (other than for your souls), you can level through rifts, you can explore, collect and gather and combat is smooth, you may not like animations but they are not the same thing. Anything else for me? please atleast remember what you write.
Not linear? Are you serious? This is the MOST linear game I have ever played in my life and I've played just about all of them! Rift is linear to the EXTREME!
Good God man...for real?
Yes man for REALZ. How can game be linear when you ignore quests completely and level any way you like? you can go anywhere on map you want, you can craft, gather collect, join pvp, take part in invasions and rifts. how the hell is this game inear? or maybe you should give me your version of what is linear.
You must have played a different beta than me.
Quests are LINEAR. You get quests, go to highlighted area, kill X or collect Y, then move to the next quest hub. That is called linear. It moves you from one quest hub to the other.
PvE is very low exp and boring, not a serious option to level, at least not fun.
Rifts are (as the poster said above) boring, not a serious option to level, at least not fun.
Crafting/gathering is very basic, nothing new, same old sorry crafting system. No fun there either.
Look, if this kind of drivel is your cup of tea then fine but saying this game isn't linear is so outside the realm of reality it's just silly. There's no reason why anyone would leave their games for this one, especially people who play WoW, EQ2 etc. This game is just flat out boring.

Accoring to massively.com the NDA in RIFT has been lifted. For those who have played the beta, or both, what are your thoughts? what did you like/dislike? will you play at launch or wait a few? do you like bacon?
No, I wouldn't touch this game with a ten foot pole, much less my $50.
I've never seen such a linear, quest-hub, hold-me-by-the-hand game in my life. It was so bad that I only played 15 minutes into beta 2 before logging out and uninstalling. I played the entire beta 1 but frankly I just couldn't stomach playing any longer.
Here's the bottom line. If you don't mind severely linear questing games with no reason to explore then fine, go blow your cash. For me, I felt like they thought we were idiots and couldn't figure things out on our own and they had to force us to follow their mindless quests. It was horrible. HORRIBLE!
I won't go into all the other things I didn't like such as the GCD because frankly it's not worth my time to do a full write up. My advice is to stay away, run away from this one.
Don't blame me if you do, I warned ya...
Ok, fair enough, but why didn't you just take things into your own hands and just level like you would in one of the old school games?
I mean I cant disagree with the questing because in both betas I remember at some point finishing a quest and then seeing another "!" and getting that sort of tired out of breath feeling.
but my thought is that a good game gives options. so I said "what are my options?"
And I stopped doing quests, went exploring, did more rifts, found a quest hub and did 2 or 3 quests and then continued doing my own thing.
At some point we have to start taking responsibiliyt for our game play and realize that the deves give us things and it's up to us how to use them.
Can one find a meaningful game over the course of all the levels if they only do select quests, level "old school" and essentially carve their own way?
I honestly don't know. It "might" be possible from what I've seen. but I haven't seen pvp, I haven't seen a copious amount of crafted items, I havne't seen the majority of the world. So I can't say. But if we allow ourselves to be led and not apply our own wisdom, our own preferences then in the end we are just as bad as those who are laying out the bread crumbs.
If there is a forest around us and you won't leave the path because "hey! It's a path!" then you aren't going to really learn what's out there.

The Rifts are nothing more than moving PQs that, to be honest, are annoying. For one, they're FPS killers. As mentioned above, this game is fairly unoptimized. Luckily, it runs alright on my rig except for in capital cities, but Rifts certainly do bring the framerate down, and actually don't even look all that great from a distance. Secondly, they are absolutely annoying. They seem to spawn anywhere, so you can have one spawn right in the middle of a pack of quest mobs or even worse, one can spawn on top of your quest hub and kill all the NPCs in the camp, so unless you can stop the Rift yourself, you can't turn in your quest until someone else stops it for you. I'm sure some people are going to love this, but I didn't care for it. The Rifts didn't feel organic at all and felt more like something out of an arcade game the way they just popped up out of nowhere.
This was actually my favorite part as it made questing that more fun.
I'm in an area solo questing and a rift pops. Before i know it i have an invite to a group of 15 or so people helping each other take the mobs down. This was pretty much every rift for me. I think if more people stopped being antisocial solo'ers, then their experience might change.
I am just going to ignore everyone and answer the OP.
For the first 20 levels it's very linear quested based game. It's fun but the two things that are suppose to make it unique aren't very well done.
First the rfits themselves are fun but if one in the middle of no where is left open for X amount of time it starts to send out wave of Elite mobs that roll over people. So basicly if it gets to that point you either need to make a raid to stop them(good luck) or wait for higher level people to come and kill it so you can finish your quests. The second part is the souls but they made a dumb... no really really dumb choice when it comes to this. Like in Wow and other MMOs most abilities have ranks but in Beta1(honestly didn't check in beta 2) you have to have X points in a soul to get higher rank of the spell. This will kill any non one soul builds.
Even if they fix these two problems I havn't seen a reason to play yet, the first dungeons are to high level(level 18-22 in a 50 level game). But I will to decide till we get more info about higher level stuff.
I will not play a game with a cash shop ever again. A dev job should be to make the game better not make me pay so it sucks less.
I read about rifts, grafs, quests and all mambo jumbo cap. Combat is the g point. Evrything u do from pve mobs or raids ,to pvp INVOLVES COMBAT. If combat is breathtaking, tactical and working well n smooth players will buy it and play it. if not it will fail like all other past mmorpgs that failed also.
So...
It uses a combat system similar to wow right?
Is combat breathtaking in rift? Combat system is better than wow 's combat or not?
Explain why.
On the surface it seems like it mimics WoW but from my experience it felt more like Warhammer. Long cast times, horrible global cooldown shared by everything. Certain spells that should be instant weren't so on. Even using AOE spells was EXACTLY like Warhammer. For me personally, this is not good as War's combat always annoyed me.

That is very exciting and exactly what I was looking for. A game where you can't go further in your desired questing because a Rift has killed the Quest Hub NPCs.....you will need to defeat the Rift event before being able to continue your questline. It is bringing together Dynamic and quest in a way that really hasn't been done before. This is thrilling news to me. Many people have said Rifts were something to avoid....but this seems to be the opposite case. Thanks for the informative review. I am soooo looking forward to this title.

If you mean combat as smooth as WOW yes it is. It works perfectly and there are no delays or clunkiness.
Yes there is. Targeting a mob, there would be a delay on seeing the mob become targeted and being able to cast a spell. Fixable, granted, but still a problem. Also very long cast times on spells. sure they can be "specced" in the soul tree to be faster but what a waste of points IMO. The soul system is cool on the surface but lacks real depth or diversity. You pretty much need to focus on one soul to be viable.
Here, go play WoW then go play Warhammer and you'll see that Warhammer combat is how Rift combat is. It's not horrible but is sure isn't fast and fun.

You have a choice to level outside of quests. Linear games do not give you that option.
Please atleast make sure you know what linear means before you start arguing.

My thoughts on rift. The combat is slow and repetitive but my guess is thats do to the limited amount of skills you have at lvl 20. The Rifts to me feel more like roaming PQs from Warhammer. The crafting was just horrible if you ask me i think Blizzard should sue for copyright infringement because the obviously copy pasted WoWs. I did however like that they had content that allowed you to fight underwater. With all that being said i probally wont play at launch because the game really offers nothing to pull me away from the other games im currently playing.

What is your definition of linear? Can you give me an example of a linear game?
I know exactly what linear means and Rift is linear. Questing is the only viable way to level outside of mindless PvE grinding, the exp for that is very low and would take at least twice as long to level and be completely boring in the process. Rift is the most linear game I have played to date. Period. It's ok to disagree, that's just my opinion.
"Censorship is never over for those who have experienced it. It is a brand on the imagination that affects the individual who has suffered it, forever." - Noam Chomsky

Well then that's a fair assessment and good on you to have tried out a few things before realizing that you shouldn't spend money on it!
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
Rifts and Invasions - are fun - and actually prety much impact everyhing.
You can level up just by doing them - so no need to quest if you dont like it.
I'll have to call you out on that one. As it is right now, the game is 100% quest driven. You could not in fact go through the game just fighting rifts - for the simple fact that ALL the equipment you need will be quest rewards. You cannot depend on Planar vendors, you certainly cannot depend on drops to stay equipped.
Look at where all the carrots are dangleling. The game should be called "Quest" not Rift. Ultimatly the rifts are just fluff. They are really cool when you first experinece them......until you realize they are easy, meaningless, and lack any real incentive.
They need to make fighting rifts, by itself, a viable way of playing the game. Thats the only possible selling point this game could have going for it. Otherwise this is just another tedious quest grind like all the others.
My point exactly..
People are not going to like the truth but it's fact that this game is a hand holding rail road stay on the path game or you really don't get ahead.
Sorry but GW2/SWTOR will rain all over this games parade.
If anything it should be FTP with cash shops.
Do not buy this game unless you have tried it,that's the best advice i can give after being in both beta weekends.
Read the post above you because you are wrong. The game has quests but it does not stop you from leveling if you don't want to do quests. You can do Rifts or go anywhere on the map and start killing mobs or collect materials for crafting. Quests is not the only source of leveling. period!
Point is, if you don't do the quests and follow the path you really gimp yourself until you have grind enough rifts to kit yourself out. The blue items start at level 15 with weapons that are not really that better than green quests items you can get by doing quests.
LOL go kill mobs to level and see how far you get with getting armour or gear.
Oh wait you can grind faction for the university which will take you ages to actually get enough rep to buy those shiny level 20 items.
And let's not forget the FPS,it's bad to say the least.
Top PCs getting 20FPS on ultra or med to high?
Make sure you have an nvidia card because this game does not like ATI.
"Point is, if you don't do the quests and follow the path you really gimp yourself until you have grind enough rifts to kit yourself out."
Disagree. Before level 20 what did you fight that really required you to be "kitted out"? Seriously? If you were doing Rifts to level the levels were coming so fast you barely had time to train abilities, gear wasn't even lasting a couple hours.
Now, if you feel like you need to be overgeared for the content before you feel comfortable engaging it, well, there's another game for that...
And, since that argument wasn't going so well, let's completely switch gears, eh?
"And let's not forget the FPS,it's bad to say the least.
Top PCs getting 20FPS on ultra or med to high?
Make sure you have an nvidia card because this game does not like ATI.
Big difference between Ultra and med to high. I use a video card that is 3 years old and got 25 pretty consistently just by tweaking a few things. I am not denying performance needs to be optimized but, it was WAY better in B2 than B1 and it will keep getting better as the game gets closer to launch. This is nothing new and has been a constant in almost every beta ever. Remember EQ2 beta slideshows in FP? Or entire zones crashing in WAR beta and on into launch? Yeah....
And there was one version of the ATI drivers that was causing issues, don't overgeneralize. The 10.10's were working, the 10.11's were not.
And, of course it runs better on nVidia, everything does!
"Souls" are just talent trees. Which basically are all stripped down versions of classes from WAR and WoW.
The graphics are pretty good, not a whole lot of work done on architecture in the game, the city's are small and uninspired and structures look shiny and new, and not quite like ruins of old or anything. All typical looking.
The Defiant races run as follow. Brown humans with 9 ugly hairstyles. 2 purple-bluhish races with even poorer stylists working on their dos.
The Guardian races are pretty typical. The human models are as alright as expected. The dwarves look cool in my opinion, quite stylized like WoW's artwork; they reuse this mole texture way too often- even on the dwarf's face. Despite several sliders the basic proportions keep any real unique look from forming. The elves look like elves, more so than EQ2's fatties, but nothing special.
Liner fetch, kill, run here quests is the meat of the progression of the game. You're told you need to kill this general who leads a legion of death. You're waiting with 50 other people for him to spawn.. You kill him, and he'll be back for certain. Completely uninspired.
The RIFT system is sort of dynamic. They seem to spawn in the same places and if you've ever played a MMO where there's been a (Fight this many wave of enemies) objective... You've done this. Everyone stands in the glowy area hitting tab and spamming 1111 2222 3333 2222 1111 33333 like you've more than likely done a million times before. Actually good social events, and a few have had their difficulty ramped up. But that's mostly been in the form of giving the mobs more HP. The AI is "I'ma run at you." dumb stick stuff so... It's not real impressive. I was shocked when ranged mobs actually stayed back to range, but just ducking behind a tree will have them just run into your clever trap of button sequence smashing.
Macros are in. So at least you can lessen the number of spamming buttons you're going to use. A lot of skills are really similar if you go up multiple trees and you'll just throw a lot of them off the grid.
Quest Helper built into the game too by the way. All text related to the quest is fluff, so if you turn this off you're shit out of luck. There's no (go kill 10 boars to the west) and I shit you not there's a lot of kill boar's quests.
Crafting is just like WoWs. You can have several track nodes abilities going at once tho'.
Quests give you appropriate items for your level and there are random drops. You catch the right fire-squirrel and send it to it's demise and you'll randomly get a purple helmet.
All stats are archtype and gear based.
No sign of a built in voice chat system yet. But I bet we'll see it.
An achievement system is in place with a ton. From mundane crap like visit all the points on a map, to pvp objectives.
Battlegrounds are in.
RP, PVE, PVP, & RPPVP servers have appeared in beta.
Yes man for REALZ. I just told you that linear games do not give you much options out side of quests to level up. Guild Wars is best example of a linear game.
Once again you are wrong that quests is the only viable option to level. if you have more than two players in your party you get bonus xp which encourages players even more to group up for iinvasion, rifts and explore. XP is a lot better in groups than you get from quests. Like i said if you find other options boring that is your opinion but saying that RIFT as a whole is linear MMO is false and spreading wrong information.

I really wanted to like this game, I need something new to play. I tried everything I could to make the game fun but I failed to do that. To Trion's credit, the game is pretty bug-free and beta went smoothly but it's the overall design and game mechanics that are lacking. I know I'm not the only one either because my friend who was also playing logged in for beta 2 for about 15 mins and logged off as well.
Sad really. The MMO genre seems to be sliding downhill in these linear/grind/hold-me-by-the-hand systems and I'm hoping we can stop this madness soon.
We, as gamers, deserve better.

EXACTLY. I play WoW for my themepark fix because it's the best at it. I play Darkfall Online for my sandbox fix. Rift doesn't give me anything new or even better than these 2 games. If anything, it does make me feel like they are just trying to make a buck and have lost or don't have the knowledge needed to "build" a living breathing world that sucks me in the moment I log in. Again, Boring is the word that comes to mind every time I think of my experience in Rift in the 2 beta events.

I am talking about RIFT as a whole game and you are talking about quests being linear. Quests are not the entire game. It is just one of many features. If RIFT was only a quest based MMO i would understand but that is not the case. there is so much other stuff to do and ways to level. if you find that boring its matter of opinion but doesn't mean game is linear. You have a choice to level outside of quests. Linear games do not give you that option.
Please atleast make sure you know what linear means before you start arguing.
Like i said if you want other options boring that is your opinion but saying that RIFT as a whole is linear MMO is false and spreading wrong information.
And I would add Rift to that list along with GW1.
As far as grouping goes, there's no reason to. Rifts are full of solo players, no need to group. And explore for what reason? There's nothing out there except the next quest hub and mobs that don't drop anything except junk. Loot drops are very rare. Exp is low. What's the point in exploring when there's nothing to explore?

I agree, it seemed like they were just in it for the box sales and not longevity. I much prefer sandbox but Rift is a disgrace to theme parks even. There's just no reason to leave games like WoW. Things like combat for instance, very smooth and enjoyable in WoW but just painful in Rift. It just feels so...clunky.

Got any other specifics and I'll share.
It's not a bad game. It's just not a unique game.
That's a pretty on the nose list for the most part.
I had that exact same issue with waitnig around to kill one particular mob while everybody waited in that same hut (beta 1). And then you'd get the voice of some other world baddie constantly ringing out in the world scolding the player "and you ascended, you...."
I'll admit I liked the fire squirrel quest. and you are exactly right with the customization. Oh sure the sliders move the face around but everybody looks like they are related.

To me its cartoony but not like wow. Comparing this to wow is like comparing Marvel comics to DC comics. They are both comic books but one is way more detailed. But its graphics are nothing at all like eq1 or vanguard.
You must have played a different beta than me.

I did explore some but it's boring. Rifts are boring. No reason to explore. It's just flat out boring! On top of that the combat was just horrible, so mediocre, slow, and uninspiring. There's just no reason to go out and explore because everything out there is...boring!
I wanted to like this game but it's flat out painful to play. Sadly, It's just not fun to play.
"Censorship is never over for those who have experienced it. It is a brand on the imagination that affects the individual who has suffered it, forever." - Noam Chomsky
Cut out the personal arguement. It's derailing the thread. Thanks.
It's not horrible but is sure isn't fast and fun.
sorry

Im picking on WoW btw because its the beast that made all of this possible
My thoughts on rift. The combat is slow and repetitive but my guess is thats do to the limited amount of skills you have at lvl 20. The Rifts to me feel more like roaming PQs from Warhammer. The crafting was just horrible if you ask me i think Blizzard should sue for copyright infringement because the obviously copy pasted WoWs. I did however like that they had content that allowed you to fight underwater. With all that being said i probally wont play at launch because the game really offers nothing to pull me away from the other games im currently playing.

2x5870 crossfire - I5 750 core overclocked 3.4ghz- 6gig ram-1.5TB HD
20-30 FPS tops?"
Alright! Here's just a bulleted list.
global cool down on everything

I really wanted to like this game, I need something new to play. I tried everything I could to make the game fun but I failed to do that. To Trion's credit, the game is pretty bug-free and beta went smoothly but it's the overall design and game mechanics that are lacking. I know I'm not the only one either because my friend who was also playing logged in for beta 2 for about 15 mins and logged off as well.
Sad really. The MMO genre seems to be sliding downhill in these linear/grind/hold-me-by-the-hand systems and I'm hoping we can stop this madness soon.
We, as gamers, deserve better.
