The linearity of the map is beyond shocking, not even WoW drives your questing from A to B in such an obvious way
Though I agree with some of your assessment, such as the world needs more quiet places, more villages (though it's possible that there is some of that, rememer we only got to 20) I think it's important to comment on the above.
The map is not linear. You really can, at least from my experience of the areas I was in, head out toward different areas. Aion has a linear map.
Is this a Vanguard quality world? hmmm, I don't think so. It's open but I need to experience a bit more of it before I say it's an open world like vangaurd.
The quest system is very linear, at least from what I've experienced, and will happily lead a player from one area to another.
That's why I say a player needs to say "stop" or else they might find themselves a bit lost in "what quest am I doint now?" world.
I agree the quest hubs don't seem very inspired.
I like the Art design for the city but I do get that there is a superficiality to it.
They do seem to be listenign to players though I would also point out that I doubt they will change the scope of the game for those players who are looking for a more open sandbox world.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
One of the other issues is the fact that there are only 2 starter zones, both of which mirror one-another rather closely in terms of early quests etc. (same ideas, different skin). I think this is what people mean when they compare it to Aion (that and the opening rifts for PvP which Trion talk about and which seems somewhat similar (on paper) to rifting in Aion).
I liked it more when the rifts got out of control and started taking over quest hubs than I did when there were lots of other players around and rifts were closed in under a minute. It did make the world feel more dynamic - but how many players will get to experience this if rifts at launch are fewer than in the beta events, and everyone's clustered together around them anyway?
If what Trion were aiming for is a more polished and more up to date version of your classic themepark MMO, then they have done that very well. Personally speaking, I'd agree with others who say the game feels superficial, that it's missing that magic "something" that makes you want to keep playing. I have no doubt there are plenty of people who will disagree, and to be honest, I'm glad. The more games there are out there satisfying players the better. This one (so far) is not for me. I'll keep going with the betas though, my opinion is not set in stone and may well change.
I'd have been happier to have been grabbed by it straight out the gate.
Rifts and Invasions - are fun - and actually prety much impact everyhing.
You can level up just by doing them - so no need to quest if you dont like it.
I'll have to call you out on that one. As it is right now, the game is 100% quest driven. You could not in fact go through the game just fighting rifts - for the simple fact that ALL the equipment you need will be quest rewards. You cannot depend on Planar vendors, you certainly cannot depend on drops to stay equipped.
Look at where all the carrots are dangleling. The game should be called "Quest" not Rift. Ultimatly the rifts are just fluff. They are really cool when you first experinece them......until you realize they are easy, meaningless, and lack any real incentive.
They need to make fighting rifts, by itself, a viable way of playing the game. Thats the only possible selling point this game could have going for it. Otherwise this is just another tedious quest grind like all the others.

Put it this way, don't expect to find this in RIFT..

I found this to be more interesting as well.
Reason being was that there was a real urgency to defeating the rift.
In beta 1, when they would just spawn, after a while I would look at the map and then say "hmmm, I'll catch the next one".
So they really do need to be movign.
I do have to say that one of the more impressive things for me (in beta 1) was that I was on the road when I suddely saw the road ahead becoming charcoal and fire and couldn't for the life of me figure out what was happending as I saw what I thought were players coming down the road. Wasn't players. That was enjoyable.
But if that happens 50, 100 times? could get old.

Wrong!
You are not entirely dependent on quests to get gear. You can infact level only using rifts. Don't forget there is crafting too and soon players will start making armor and weapons. The green gear also drops from mobs quite frequently so once again quests is not the only source. I fully equipped my two alts just from weapons and gear that dropped from various mobs.
After i got out of first quest area all i did was RIFTS till level 20 and whatever gear i needed i got from mobs or from auction house. I didn't touch even a single quest so no game is not linear at all. You can level any way you like.

My point exactly..
People are not going to like the truth but it's fact that this game is a hand holding rail road stay on the path game or you really don't get ahead.
Sorry but GW2/SWTOR will rain all over this games parade.
If anything it should be FTP with cash shops.

Not only that, but if you're in the early zones and there are few other players around you could find yourself stymied in terms of progress to a certain extent. Remember how people complained in WAR about being unable to find people to do PQs with in lowbie zones? Well, in Rift, if there aren't failsafes introduced, getting through Freemarch (as an example) could be quite the frustrating experience once the pop in the area goes down.
I liked the dynamism of it a lot, but found it irksome after a while when I couldn't finish a mission without being interrupted by a random pack of rift-spawn. As you say, it could get old fast. Hopefully it's something they'll tweak.

Clever one aren't you?
First you complain its hand holding quest driven on rail MMO. When i say no you can level out of quests too, so now you bring up the excuse of GRIND? also Trion is adding auto invite so once you enter rift you don't have to grind solo. So that solves the problem of tagging NPCS, anything else?

I will go with the people who say, if you like WAR/LOTR you will like this game. I really don't see the WOW in it at all. The world from what i seen was just small and very uninteresting. Nothing made me want to go out and just explore. The rifts were fun for the first few but then got boring.
As for being a stable game, i would rate that as a fail. I was in this second beta and i was getting disconnected from the game every few minutes. Didn't really see that many bugs and for the amount of people that were in a single area the game ran pretty smooth.
Combat was slow as hell and uninspiring to say the least. Characters looked ok and worked.
All in all, as a fantasy mmorpg, the game doesn't do it better than WOW, but can compete with WAR, AOC,LOTR and AION.
So instead of grinding quests you grind rifts and hope that your group tag the mobs first because that's all the rifts were to me,just making sure you tag the npcs first.
Sounds like you didnt play for very long. You do not need to tag mobs when participating in a Rift. If you do tag a mob you may receive a tiny bit of exp and maybe some loot, but anybody who participates in the Rift will get a huge chunk of exp once it is closed, regardless of how many mobs you tagged. Tagging the mobs is pretty pointless in Rifts.

Actually spooky, you can level by just doing rifts "if" there are enough of them. How often they appear could very well be different than beta.
As long as there is crafting and the gear that is crafted is decent then one doesn't have to do quests.
"yes" at the moment the only way to really get decent gear is quests. However, after saying that I will also say that i didn't look too closely at the vendors for the rift goodies so I can't say what they offer.
But the xp in rifts was very good.

Like i said like PQS in WAR, Trion will add the auto invite option so that players can co ordinate with eachother better. As of now yes there is a problem because healers can't heal and tanks can't tank due to lack of support.

Oh and good luck getting level aproprite gear without. It seems they really want you to follow thre breadcrumbs.
I am not ready to draw a final conclusion as I am not far enough into tthe game to do that, but I will say that I am struggling to want to go further..especially when I am struggling to log into Cataclysm. I am just burnt out on the read a wall of text (which feels very un-epic), let me hold your hand to exactly where you need to stand, rinse, repeat.
What I liked is the spell animations and effects. Very nice :-). I also liked the variety of classes. The actions button combat seemed smooth. The FPS improved about 10-30 FPS on the highest settings since beta 1, so that was a big plus. The game didn't have a lot of bugs which was also nice to see at this stage.
I agree with others that this is sort of WOW, EQ 2.5 with a Warhammer theme. The Rifts were a huge disappointment so far, not the dynamic type of event I was expecting, so heres hoping that GW2 implements this correctly. The graphics are pretty, but I was expecting more and I don't feel as if I am playing a Next Gen MMO. I liked the artwork in Lord of the Rings Online better in certain instances.
The problem with this game is that it really does little to differentiate itself from other games that have recently been released or will be released, like Forsaken Worlds, Gods and Heroes, Allods Online, Lord of the Rings Online, AOC, etc. It doesn't have my interest peaked in what the Dynamic Events MAY be with GW2, or the stronger voiced story with choices in SWTOR. It's not a bad game. For those that aren't burnt out and are just looking for a new world to explore in, its certaintly not a bad game. Its actually pretty good, but for me I can't see a reason for this to pull me away from either finishing Cataclysm (which Im struggling with), or SWTOR/GW2.
Regardless, I need to play more and see higher levels.

then you my friend are one lucky sob. Most of my drops were crap I couldnt use. As for the auction house....where did you get the cash for that? Selling the junk loot from rifts?
Leveling off of rifts, sure. Equipping off of rifts....Im still not convinced. As I pointed out, the game incentiveses (is that a word?) questing. Players will follow the path of least resistance (and boredom). They need to make the rifts more rewarding (and more challenging and interesting while they are at it).

Fair enough but doesn't mean other than souls you are forced to do quests in order to level. Like i said option is there to level anyways you like. once you get all of you three souls what is stoping anyone from going out there and level how they want?

i got bored of quests at level 16 and decided to level only by participating in Rifts. They must have been stress testing rifts because i only had to wait a few minutes before a rift would appear, quite frequently there would be multiple rifts up at once. I got from level 16 to 19 just be doing Rifts so i think its fair to say that questing is not all you can do. In regards to armor, you can sell your rewards that you get from the Rifts and buy some armor, or just go gathering and than craft your own armor

That's a very good point. However, they are looking into players getting all their souls from the start or close to the start.
So that could solve that issue.

Point is, if you don't do the quests and follow the path you really gimp yourself until you have grind enough rifts to kit yourself out. The blue items start at level 15 with weapons that are not really that better than green quests items you can get by doing quests.
LOL go kill mobs to level and see how far you get with getting armour or gear.
Oh wait you can grind faction for the university which will take you ages to actually get enough rep to buy those shiny level 20 items.
And let's not forget the FPS,it's bad to say the least.
Top PCs getting 20FPS on ultra or med to high?
Make sure you have an nvidia card because this game does not like ATI.

Or you could craft/buy some armor and weapons, as others have said. I got a crap load of stuff from doing rifts, such as the item enhancement things and collectibles, im sure you could get some decent coin selling those. You act like questing is the only way to get gear
Very dull and uninspiring. Had to force myself to play. Didn't like the character models. I'd have to be VERY bored of any other game to even give this game a shot.
This^^
I was very bored after both events and never once had an "urge" to log in and play. I think the game is too shallow and didn't give me reasons to play. Plenty of shallow games out there, we don't need more.

After i got out of first quest area all i did was RIFTS till level 20 and whatever gear i needed i got from mobs or from auction house. I didn't touch even a single quest so no game is not linear at all. You can level any way you like.
then you my friend are one lucky sob.
I can assure you i wasn't the only one getting green drops from mobs. The gold comes easy. I sold few greens and whatever i got from gathering and junk. Sold so much ore, i was surprised at amount of crafters already looking for mats.
Some guy was desperate for soft leather and i sold it for good amount of whatever i had since i am not intersted in crafting. you want to make decent money? pick up 3 gathering skills and you will never have a cash problem.

My point exactly..
People are not going to like the truth but it's fact that this game is a hand holding rail road stay on the path game or you really don't get ahead.
Sorry but GW2/SWTOR will rain all over this games parade.
If anything it should be FTP with cash shops.
Do not buy this game unless you have tried it,that's the best advice i can give after being in both beta weekends.
So instead of grinding quests you grind rifts and hope that your group tag the mobs first because that's all the rifts were to me,just making sure you tag the npcs first.
Read the post above you because you are wrong. The game has quests but it does not stop you from leveling if you don't want to do quests. You can do Rifts or go anywhere on the map and start killing mobs or collect materials for crafting. Quests is not the only source of leveling. period!
Bite Me
Not only that, but if you're in the early zones and there are few other players around you could find yourself stymied in terms of progress to a certain extent.

Except you wont get your third soul (skill set) if you do this. Not only this the quest chain for this is so long (despite things being unrelated) that it is quite easy to miss a step and so not get it.
There Is Always Hope!

Fair enough but doesn't mean other than souls you are forced to do quests in order to level. Like i said option is there to level anyways you like. once you get all of you three souls what is stoping anyone from going out there and level how they want?
Bite Me
i got bored of quests at level 16 and decided to level only by participating in Rifts.

2x5870 crossfire - I5 750 core overclocked 3.4ghz- 6gig ram-1.5TB HD
20-30 FPS tops?
Or you could craft/buy some armor and weapons, as others have said. I got a crap load of stuff from doing rifts, such as the item enhancement things and collectibles, im sure you could get some decent coin selling those. You act like questing is the only way to get gear
This^^
I was very bored after both events and never once had an "urge" to log in and play. I think the game is too shallow and didn't give me reasons to play. Plenty of shallow games out there, we don't need more.
I can assure you i wasn't the only one getting green drops from mobs. The gold comes easy. I sold few greens and whatever i got from gathering and junk. Sold so much ore, i was surprised at amount of crafters already looking for mats.
