I am not ready to draw a final conclusion as I am not far enough into tthe game to do that, but I will say that I am struggling to want to go further..especially when I am struggling to log into Cataclysm. I am just burnt out on the read a wall of text (which feels very un-epic), let me hold your hand to exactly where you need to stand, rinse, repeat.
What I liked is the spell animations and effects. Very nice :-). I also liked the variety of classes. The actions button combat seemed smooth. The FPS improved about 10-30 FPS on the highest settings since beta 1, so that was a big plus. The game didn't have a lot of bugs which was also nice to see at this stage.
I agree with others that this is sort of WOW, EQ 2.5 with a Warhammer theme. The Rifts were a huge disappointment so far, not the dynamic type of event I was expecting, so heres hoping that GW2 implements this correctly. The graphics are pretty, but I was expecting more and I don't feel as if I am playing a Next Gen MMO. I liked the artwork in Lord of the Rings Online better in certain instances.
The problem with this game is that it really does little to differentiate itself from other games that have recently been released or will be released, like Forsaken Worlds, Gods and Heroes, Allods Online, Lord of the Rings Online, AOC, etc. It doesn't have my interest peaked in what the Dynamic Events MAY be with GW2, or the stronger voiced story with choices in SWTOR. It's not a bad game. For those that aren't burnt out and are just looking for a new world to explore in, its certaintly not a bad game. Its actually pretty good, but for me I can't see a reason for this to pull me away from either finishing Cataclysm (which Im struggling with), or SWTOR/GW2.
Regardless, I need to play more and see higher levels.
You pretty much summed up my feelings on Rift. While it certainly a well polished game especially for being in beta, but I feel like it suffers a bit of an identity crisis as perhaps they tried to make it too much like other games out there. The combat animations for me are all just too similar and at lower levels alot of the skills between souls are redundant.
Point is, if you don't do the quests and follow the path you really gimp yourself until you have grind enough rifts to kit yourself out. The blue items start at level 15 with weapons that are not really that better than green quests items you can get by doing quests.
LOL go kill mobs to level and see how far you get with getting armour or gear.
Oh wait you can grind faction for the university which will take you ages to actually get enough rep to buy those shiny level 20 items.
Or you could craft/buy some armor and weapons, as others have said. I got a crap load of stuff from doing rifts, such as the item enhancement things and collectibles, im sure you could get some decent coin selling those. You act like questing is the only way to get gear
Nope ,i have already said you can avoid questing but it's not in your interest to do so unless you want to gimp yourself.
Rifts and Invasions - are fun - and actually prety much impact everyhing.
You can level up just by doing them - so no need to quest if you dont like it.
I'll have to call you out on that one. As it is right now, the game is 100% quest driven. You could not in fact go through the game just fighting rifts - for the simple fact that ALL the equipment you need will be quest rewards. You cannot depend on Planar vendors, you certainly cannot depend on drops to stay equipped.
Look at where all the carrots are dangleling. The game should be called "Quest" not Rift. Ultimatly the rifts are just fluff. They are really cool when you first experinece them......until you realize they are easy, meaningless, and lack any real incentive.
They need to make fighting rifts, by itself, a viable way of playing the game. Thats the only possible selling point this game could have going for it. Otherwise this is just another tedious quest grind like all the others.
My point exactly..
People are not going to like the truth but it's fact that this game is a hand holding rail road stay on the path game or you really don't get ahead.
Sorry but GW2/SWTOR will rain all over this games parade.
If anything it should be FTP with cash shops.
Do not buy this game unless you have tried it,that's the best advice i can give after being in both beta weekends.
Read the post above you because you are wrong. The game has quests but it does not stop you from leveling if you don't want to do quests. You can do Rifts or go anywhere on the map and start killing mobs or collect materials for crafting. Quests is not the only source of leveling. period!
Point is, if you don't do the quests and follow the path you really gimp yourself until you have grind enough rifts to kit yourself out. The blue items start at level 15 with weapons that are not really that better than green quests items you can get by doing quests.

I was doing fine killing mobs with my green gear at lvl 18. Had no problem. I didn't see any elite type mobs so ofcourse that would be different story. Also you are counting out the crafting part. trion has said repeatedely that like AIOn and WOW they won't make crafting useless. So you can get you gear from crafters and not just quest NPCS.
We can't expect to see blue and shiny armor from crafters in beta now can we? but more i read your posts more i realise that you just want to complaint. Rift hardly has any grind but if this much bothers you then i suggest stop playing MMOS all together. I can't even say go play sandbox because you will have to grind there too.

Wrong!
You are not entirely dependent on quests to get gear. You can infact level only using rifts. Don't forget there is crafting too and soon players will start making armor and weapons. The green gear also drops from mobs quite frequently so once again quests is not the only source. I fully equipped my two alts just from weapons and gear that dropped from various mobs.
After i got out of first quest area all i did was RIFTS till level 20 and whatever gear i needed i got from mobs or from auction house. I didn't touch even a single quest so no game is not linear at all. You can level any way you like.
then you my friend are one lucky sob. Most of my drops were crap I couldnt use. As for the auction house....where did you get the cash for that? Selling the junk loot from rifts?
Leveling off of rifts, sure. Equipping off of rifts....Im still not convinced. As I pointed out, the game incentiveses (is that a word?) questing. Players will follow the path of least resistance (and boredom). They need to make the rifts more rewarding (and more challenging and interesting while they are at it).
I can assure you i wasn't the only one getting green drops from mobs. The gold comes easy. I sold few greens and whatever i got from gathering and junk. Sold so much ore, i was surprised at amount of crafters already looking for mats.
Some guy was desperate for soft leather and i sold it for good amount of whatever i had since i am not intersted in crafting. you want to make decent money? pick up 3 gathering skills and you will never have a cash problem.
getting greens wasnt the hard part, it was getting greens I could use. But even when I did get something I could use I would always find that the quest item was better.
In any case, if I am bored enough to log into the the next beta, I'll try rifting my way to lvl20. If at any point I find myself undergeared I am coming back here and throwing a pie at you.

Sold, or salvaged. If you craft armor or weapons you can break down the drops you can't use into components - mostly vendor-trash but with a genuinely useful bit in amongst it. Was the only part of crafting I found interesting at early levels.

I had taken rune crafting, so I was smashing most of my items to get the sparkelies out. The metal crafters can smash stuff too. Even useless greens can be usefull.

Well, if they can make it so crafters can make useful items and that players don't have to rely upon long quest chains for that third soul, it would seem a player could very well avoid the quest train.
Of course, one would have to enjoy leveling off of rifts and exploring/killing and either make their own reason to be in game or go for the pvp portion.

1. Crafted gear was in every example I found, BETTER than quest gear or drops.
2. Game was beautiful and very polished.
3. Leveling was steady and not a chore.
4. Game did not feel like a grind at all. Questing brought good XP gains.
5. The story is good. If you bother to read the quests they make sense and you have a reason for doing what you are doing. Many of the complaints are from people I honestly doubt read anything.
The game does lead you along with quests and can seem very linear. There is an easy way to break this cycle. When you find a group of quests together DO NOT TAKE THEM ALL. Take one of them. On your runs back and forth harvest items and craft. Explore while your running around.
People get bored because they CHOOSE to get bored. Playing the same way in an MMO will get boring regardless of the MMO.
Rift is a very polished, pretty, fun version of WoW and Aion and WAR and all the other themepark MMO's out there. This is EXACTLY what the devs said they were doing. They said flat out they took all the games they played and picked the parts they liked. They used this to create Rift.
I'll be buying it and enjoying it when it comes out. I hope, if your not playing Rift, you find a game you like.
I will go with the people who say, if you like WAR/LOTR you will like this game. I really don't see the WOW in it at all. The world from what i seen was just small and very uninteresting. Nothing made me want to go out and just explore. The rifts were fun for the first few but then got boring.
I really don't see Lotro in it... But then again... I do see alot of WaR/WoW stuff in Rift.
(btw, the world in Lotro is very open and intresting for exploring etc)

ya know, even some invasions can help somewhat. I remember the first time I returned to turn in my quests, only to find a "major life invasion" occupying the quest hub. So a bunch of us fought it out with these interlopers and took it back. That was a breath of fresh air. Because I was riding on rails through the quests and finally something meaningfull happened that woke me up and got me involved. The game needs a lot more of that. Not just optional, but essential.

As for being a stable game, i would rate that as a fail. I was in this second beta and i was getting disconnected from the game every few minutes. Didn't really see that many bugs and for the amount of people that were in a single area the game ran pretty smooth.
Combat was slow as hell and uninspiring to say the least. Characters looked ok and worked.
All in all, as a fantasy mmorpg, the game doesn't do it better than WOW, but can compete with WAR, AOC,LOTR and AION.
People keep saying it's like LOTRO/WAR but then they say it's boring and uninspired. Quests in LOTRO were awesome and dynamic, especially the epic quests. WAR has constant PVP. That's what defines those two games. How can a game that's a mix of LOTRO and WAR be boring and uninspired?
What's the PVP supposed to be like in Rift? Will you be able to do it whenever you want? Open world PVP?
Anyway, if there really was a game that mixed LOTRO and WAR successfully, I'd buy it in a second as those are my two favorite MMOs for PVE and PVP respectively.
The only way what you're saying makes sense is if it had the PVP of LOTRO and the PVE of WAR. That would suck.
The first beta event, I was a little disappointed with Rift. During the 2nd I started to enjoy the game much more. They are definitely listening and make changes based on feedback. The open world events they did the last day of the 2nd beta were a lot of fun. It shows they have the ability to do things like that at any time which makes it more exciting when it brings everyone together for large battles.
One thing I didn't like was the linear feel to the quest lines, you really have no option to pick areas to quest in, you follow what they give you.
People are so quick to make judgement, you have only seen level 1-20, that's it. Think of other MMO's and can you really make a complete opinion of a game based off the intro areas? AoC was just the opposite, people loved the intro and the rest of the game was unpolished and terrible.
All I am saying is give these guys a chance to show that they have before everyone starts bashing the game. I have a VIP and intend on checking out all aspects of the game before i start screaming "BUY THIS NOW" or "What a POS game".
Average to good graphics wasted by an incredibly dull enviroment (what you would normally expect of gamebryo), small race distinction (humans, humans with ears, dwarves), very attractive and sexy UI, horrific combat at least for melee and casters have very bad spell effects and overall poor animations that fail to impress and connect you to your character.
Rifts seem pointless even though they do give rewards both by themselves and through a token system and feel like more of a nuisance that are there just to kill quest givers and cause frustration when you bump into them and generally don't work well with the leveling system (questing). I never felt the need to just go and kill some rifts/invasions although I hope they do have better plans for them.
Questing is heavily linear, leveling is fast simply because there is so few content at the first lvls, I had to do all of the quests and still grind 1-2 bars after lvl 15. Alt replayability is probably out of the question especially since they made every race start at the same place.
ya know, even some invasions can help somewhat. I remember the first time I returned to turn in my quests, only to find a "major life invasion" occupying the quest hub. I completely agree.
It was the invasions that took quest areas or that made it so that players had to deal with them, that were interesting and really spiced things up.

From what I gathered its not the pvp of War that they comparing it to, but the PQs of Warhammer. Also it seems they say this because they are trying to compare it to something, and it has been done before. But unless the developers said they are trying to bring something new to the genre then that argument is not valid in my opinion. Its up to the player to decide if that playstyle is fun for them.
You are not entirely dependent on quests to get gear. You can infact level only using rifts. Don't forget there is crafting too and soon players will start making armor and weapons. Thats funny leveling 3 characters to 20 18 and 17 I got one blue and 5 green drops none where class or level appropriate. You get a ton of gear through questing with frequent upgrades.
Also lets not forget you will not unlock your 3rd soul (skill tree) without questing.

I have to admit that I did get tired of the questing. At first I decided to log out. But then I thought "well, you don't play lotro as a predominant quest grinder (I don't) so why not apply the same type of experence.
That's when I found myself becomgng more engaged, more interested.
Whether or not one can completely dissasociate themselves from questing remains to be seen but it looks promising.
I'm not sure how much one can go their own way and make their own fun. We haven't seen pvp yet or the crafting.
Players do sometimes take the path of least resistance and allow themselves to be led. Perhaps if they took initiative they might get a better experience.

That sounds almost exactly like the control points in Tabula Rasa. It was one of the best parts of the game.
