It plays a million times bettee than Warhammer so who cares if they have warhammer ideas here. It also is more fun leveling in Rift than in WoW as well. I'll be playing this until GW2 for sure. I'm glad I got into beta and got a chance to test it out. The game is also pretty well polished but ofcourse it can use more work. Good game!
If you liked WAR, you'll love Rift, it sticks with what worked in WAR without deviating to much from its original design. It's got PQ's, Realm Ranks, Instance's, and even quests still get highlighted on your map for you, so you can continue to not even read the summaries. And you'll be right at home with the copied and pasted art and animations.
However, if you're one of the over 800,000 people who left WAR in its first 3 months of release, you probably shouldnt waste your time on Rift.
Warhammer uses a modified version of the dark age of camelot engine (which was released almost a decade ago) i got that quote from marc jacobs himself, shortly after i quit warhammer.
why? because its the same game with new visuals. same bugs.. I REPEAT.. THE SAME BUGS. if they cant fix the bug in 5 or 6 years, they are incapable of fixing it, i dont work on a game with inept designers, sorry. you pay good money, i expect quality programmers.
The bug that when you hit abutton to activate an ability sometimes doesnt register and then theres a big lag delay. that bug was warhammer, and dark age of camelot its predecessor. there is no excuse for this. and if its in RIFT i will never buy it, because i expect a hotkey to go off when i execute the keystroke. not seconds later. sorry its 2010, not 1998.
this game wont last long as its nothing special, just fancy graphics with a known formula. if i wanted that i would have never cancelled my wow account as i've about 5 or 6 level 80s. i'm not goign to level up again in ANY MMO, unless the endgame is worth it.
Its also the same engine used for oblivion. I think fallout also. Its not a decade old the engine has been updated. I would not call it one of the best engines on the market, but it certainly is not a decade old. Its also the same engine Rift uses.
I have now seen my first hour of combined player questing and adventuring thru live streams from people in Beta 3.
I can honestly say that the questing reminds me very much of The Burning Crusade. This direct comparison is due to a few things.
1. the level of interaction going on in the battles and the flowing manner in which everything happens.
2. the quality depth of the questing in general and the varied locations that never make things get stail.
The strange part is I am referencing an expansion in WoW as very similar but that expansion was for level 58 players and higher. Rift is currently maxxing at level 20.
This shows me that Rift is a bit more mature and isn't affraid to let you get deeper into things a bit more quickly.
One thing I saw repeated again and again is there were many classes that chose to go solo even though they were not healers and didn't seem to seek out healers in ooc or chat to group up with. I think maybe having a healer or some type group with a tanker, dpser would be a real winning combo and you would have more fun going thru the many interesting quest chains or just plow thru a fortress area and take on the head guy when he spawns since you have a semi rounded group that can take more punishement and keep on dishing it out. I guess people will eventually see an advantage to grouping, but since it's beta there is no long lasting purpose to the grouping dynamic. Groups will be needed for dungeons and for pvp I am thinking.
I mean really what logic is in comparing a game to another because it has similar developers? Who cares that it has some developers who worked on WAR, that means nothing to me, and calling this game bad or it fails based on that is stupid and pointless. Many developers have good games, and then future games suck, like Infinity Ward, or SOE, but never reverse. Why would developers release another botched product, they would lose more money, I'm pretty sure WAR was not a profit, if it was, not much at all.
I've seen videos of Rift, although I have not played the beta, it has promise, it has potential, it uses alot from WoW, from EQ, and other MMO's, and it's own unique soul system, and LOTS of class combinations. I can tell you tho, be smart, and wait for a trial or buddy key, unless you played the beta. Making a day one purchase I agree is not wise. Wait 2 weeks while playing something else, and see how it pans out.

As someone who played TBC and loved the questing, I'm really not seeing the comparisons. WoW had no official quest helper until Wrath iirc, which meant you had to read the quests and use your noggin to actually think for yourself.
TBC you started out through the Dark Portal, you were confronted with a battlefront and there was so much option to explore. I actually skipped HP and went to Zangar, something you can't do in Rift as it's on rails.
The quality of quests just can't be compared either. I barely read Rift's, even when I do they're pointless and dull, no wall o'text describing the situation and offering some immersion at least, just click and go to the big yellow circle. I still remember that felreaver stomping around HP, scared the crud out of me.

TBC was almost a disaster for Blizzard, I recall a huge number of folk quitting within the first 4 months. Around 9 months after it launched I checked the wow-census figures for the eu-realms, they were near enough all down by 35% maybe more.
Was quite amazing to see my own realm go from high pop to low pop during peak hours (the good old days of latency free raiding :P).
I'm pretty sure the only reason wow is still here today is due to its success in the far east/china.
I just dont see comparing this game to the tbc expansion as necessarily a good thing (or warhammer come to that).
Hmm, methinks I'll be waiting for reviews at launch before trying this game (a score average of 85- 90% from several game sites would be enough to draw me away from wow-cata nothing less!)
Also - I'd recommend against the line of thinking that goes like this: "WAR used Gamebryo, RIFT uses Gamebryo, therefore, they must be the same!"
Remember - Gamebryo is just a graphics toolset, not a gameplay or MMO toolset.
The only things the two games have in common would be a couple elements in the art pipeline, and some limited amount of client display code.
The gameplay layers and server backends (the things that make the game...a game) were built from scratch for both games, and really don't have anything to do with client rendering.
On top of that, there's very little of the original Gamebryo left in RIFT. It was a good jumpstart, but it's mostly be replaced with custom code as well.
well, if they are people who got fired from mythic that says enough for me to not buy it. mythic alone was a horrible company who was in it just to make a buck, I called customer service one day because my account got hacked when i was playing dark age of camelot and the CSR rep refused to give me my account back even though i had talked to her the day prior saying someone is trying to take my account.
If you get fired from the worst MMO company in the business thats pretty sad. why not way for a real mmo. and gamebryo is an outdated toolset that has been in use for at least 6 or 7 years. you want to buy a game thats outdated as soon as it comes out? real programmers use their own code, from scratch. I dont buy anything these morons say.

Who cares if they were the ones who got axed from Mythic or not. They seem alot more capable than the crew that was left at Mythic only to be abosrbed into a rpg group at Bioware.

because the devs actually make the game, i like a proven track record, and the people from mythic have one of the worst track records of any MMO company, so, i personally dont want to play a game made by the trash that couldnt even hack it at a horrible company. I'll wait for the bioware mmo because they have a track record of awesome unique games. I have about 5 MMO discs where i paid 50$ only to not even play past the free month. its a waste of money. Just wait for a real mmo with more than one unique feature, i'm sure the "awesome class system" will be unique, and uniquely broken and unbalanced. what would make you think they could make a good MMO when all they've produced is clone trash.

Ever played Dark Age of Camelot?
A lot of employees got dropped from Mythic because of the overall economy as well, not just due to the games they are running.
That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!
I don't much care if it's the exact same thing as warhammer.
Did it feel like warhammer? Yeah it did. It was the same boring dull type of quests where you run 10 ft from where you are, which i guess is a good thing considering how damned slow you move in this game. I thought wow felt them parky, this is nuts.
The combat is dull and boring. The sound effects are laughable, i haven't heard this bad of sound effects in a game in a long time. The animation is sub par. The rifts are the same old PQ's from warhammer, seen it, done it, don't care. The graphics are ok, no omg that's awesome, moments but they aren't horrid either.
All in all i don't see a reason to pay money for this game. Warhammer has more content, if i wanted to play warhammer i'd just play that, not this game.
I really don't get what all the stupid hype was over this game, it feels very uninspired and blah.
MUCH better than WAR. Only thing similar is rifts/ PQs
This is a WOW/WAR hybrid. Its very much like WAR and WOW combined for multiple reasons. Is that bad or good? The game is ok but its a typical MMO in most regards and Rifts are fun for a while but that will get boring fast leaving you with a standard MMO. Im split on the game on whether I'll buy or not, I would probably get my money worth but I can honestly say the game as a whole doesnt excite me. Overall, its ok

combat dull and boring? just ot be expect from devs tat cant even hack it at a half rate dev company. why would you want the garbage from mythic making your game? its fail all the way, just because they dont know what they are doing other than doing what has already been done. the combat is what keeps peole playing and if its this boring then people will quit quick and your 50$ spent on a box is just going to turn the CD into a coaster. 15$ a month, please, for what? something thats alreay been done before. no thanks. if you cant see this is just a cash grab for a game thats held on by threads and strings then you are blind.
Threads like this is why I frequent this site and partially how I form my opinion about a game before I buy it.
There is a whole lot of useful information here and all in all it's much better than relying on a game site review imo.
After following this game for a while I think I will take the risk and throw the money down for a pre-order. The last time I did that was for STO over a year ago.
i'm just trying to warn people against the hype, as someone whos played mmos since they were invented, and has been duped by the hype machine at least 4 or 5 times, dont beleive what they tell you, beleive what WE THE PEOPLE tell you because we are unbiased. You are in for a rude awakening when you buy into what the devs spew, they gloss everything and make it sound better than it could ever be. but some people just dont get it. I'm telling you, the graphics will hold you for a few days, but with the boring combat and lack of innovation you will get bored and this game will just become another coaster on your computer desk. wait for a good mmo with a good reputation not just one that comes out of nowhere claiming to be awesome. The devs are like politicians, their job is to sell you. and most of you are too young to realize what they are doing, but its wrong, you just dont see it. I've wasted hundreds of dollars on MMOs that i dont even play anymore I quit wow to wait for star wars MMO because i know its going to be good, because they have a proven track record, do these rift guys have one? no.. dont trust them. they are selling you a pinto dressed as a ferarri.

This is a good post. It's the same thing I was thinking about Rift when I stare at these MMO boxes on my desk when I was under 16 and had no common sense, just dove straight in and was always disappointed by the empty promises.
My number one advice now, for any MMO, don't buy it on day 1, wait a week, for reviews and thoughts before diving in. Even with trusted companies like Bioware or Blizzard, be wise about it. Throwing money away is never a good thing.
Yeah listen to the completely unbiased opinions (is that irony or sarcasm?) of the people's tribunes. Good grief. There is no need for all of the angst displayed daily on these forums.
Look the game is what it is; a AAA up to date well coded standard high fantasy mmo. If that's what you're looking for then it seems to have hit the sweet spot, its certainly been the best mmo I've ever encountered in a beta state. Its been a long dry spell since the last good modern game following the standard formula of most successful mmo's. I don't think I'm alone when I say that is all I want after 2 years of "innovative" yet horrible games. Buy it and have fun for as long as you want and then move on to the next title.
If you want some sort of unique non mainstream experience then go play one of the many titles in the marketplace that offer such. You'd think that with all of the complainers on these forums that at least one of them would have made some money by now.

That DAoC incident really left a bad taste in your mouth, didn't it? Well forgive me for pissing in your cheerios but just because a handful of people that took part in designing another game in another company doesn't automatically make the game being developed by a different company with some of the same people bad. Plus, you had a problem with customer support. Did the CSR people get transferred to Trion Worlds too?
The hype on this game was way overboard, to log in and see the same old bunch of stuff repacked with may bee an updated graphics engine, was disappointing.
Im sure folks will buy into it. however I been around the block. I read all the hype folks will leave wow, they will leave lotro, they will leave eq2 and never go back. I saw that with warhammer, aion, aoc and others. Sure folks go play but I have yet to see anything new that will actually put the other guys out of business, and the main reason is that more and more folks are playing, and when you only niche game like this one that's all it is ever going to be.
The funny thing was the only boards that I saw stuff on about rift were eq2, and vangaurd. I have yet see anybody in lotro go oh wow look at this I am leaving. Most eq2 folks Iknow are loving it becasue of the dev staff, dont know why as most of the folks I play with are happy we dont have them as devs now.
There is nothing new with this game, time for me to move along.

combat dull and boring? just ot be expect from devs tat cant even hack it at a half rate dev company. why would you want the garbage from mythic making your game? its fail all the way, just because they dont know what they are doing other than doing what has already been done. the combat is what keeps peole playing and if its this boring then people will quit quick and your 50$ spent on a box is just going to turn the CD into a coaster.
