And again you are wrong..practically same everything? the similarities to WAR start and end up at PQS (even though they work entirely different from one another). once you are out of tutorial area its a completely different game and stands own its own quite well.
As far as you comments regarding colors i think its case of being 'color blind'.
I see 2 faily similar grays....you seem to see black and white. it happens the same when it comes to Rift, WAR and WoW
If you cannot even acknowledge how huge of a clone Rift is and how much it copy pasted (not borrowed, copy pasted) from both WAR and WoW, further discussion with you is moot.
now please continue with your daily routine of jamming your fingers in your ears screaming “lalalalalalala” and running around.
Wow "copy pasted" huh? Then it should be simple to post up screenshots illustrating your point. Right? Uh, hello? Where'd you go? Hello? If you want to advance a ludicrous supposition then I think the onus is on you to provide some proof instead of the level headed people trying to re-explain the you've already rejected.
Reading these threads there seem to be one group of people that are level headed and say things like, yeah Rift copied stuff from other games and improved on it in a nice overall package (like every other successful game) and there is another group making crazy claims like, NOOO its an EXACT COPY of WAR or WOW or whatever. I know which one seems more believable to me.
Let's put aspects of RIFT to the names we've compared it to: WAR and WoW.
Graphics: STRONG resemblance to WAR (nobody who's played both can deny this). Slight improvement.
Combat: Wooden and a bit dull (very much like WAR). Downgrade from WoW, Same as WAR.
Factions: Generic 2 factions with new names. Equal.
Races: Generic races with unique names, similar to others. Equal.
Classes: Generic 4 basic archetypes, skill trees within those races (given a new name "souls") Equal.
Character Advancement: Generic quests & killing for xp and leveling to max level. Equal.
Crafting: Basic generic crafting. Downgrade from WoW, upgrade from WAR.
Rifts: Virtually identical to WAR's PQ's except they aren't always there, but always spawn in the same places. Slight upgrade from WAR. WoW doesn't have these N/A
PvP: generic faction based combat with pvp and pve areas, servers. Same as WoW, Downgrade from WAR.
I typed these really fast, so I may log on later and disagree with myself.
i suggest you do the same because no one said it didn't borrow anything from otther MMOS. Even the devs have said it that they have taken whatever they enjoyed from other MMOS and incorporated it in RIFT. Doesn't mean its a clone or have zero originality of its own.
That is the VERY DEFINITION of a clone having zero originality. Take everything from something else and throw it into your own while adding nothing. Originality would mean you actually create something, not copy it. What one major feature about this game is original? Absolutely nothing.
If we were to compare Rift to a music band, it'd be like the bandmembers sitting around going "Hey i really like led zeppelin and black sabbath alot, i wish we could sound like them we'd probably have the same success" and then they take the exact riffs from those bands songs, mix them up a little, mix up the lyrics and call it something new.
It's not, it's a ripoff. Rift is a cheap clone and it feels that way from the second you login, until 30 mins later when you logout in disgust after playing yet another destined to fail after 30 days clone.
Could you give an example of a completely original game that you play and enjoy? Or even a single game that doesn't fit the above definition?

Undeniable people, I don't get why the fanboys have to blindly defend the game. I'll be surprised if it retains 100k subs after the first month. For a 2011 release this is poor at best, at least SW TOR and GW2 are trying different concepts.

EQ2, and some would say EQ1.
Uhhh, you just responded with a sequel as being an example of a completely original game? I'm not sure if I need to even try to refute your post heh.

Heheh...EQ2 was not completely original and took from several games at the time. Oh, and the launch was terrible. Not saying it did not end up a good game though. EQ1 was original is it was really the first of its kind but even it took some things from M59 and the old AOL Neverwinter Nights game.

I think that's really dead on with one exception, the ability to mix up souls per class. That's about the only thing I would call new to this game. All the rest are very much as you say.
Well the Rifts always spawn in the same place and if a raid force is not nearby it will soon take over any hub they pop near like silver college the one right there at the spider den.
Other than that the game is a virtual copy/cut/paste.

I am certainly a fanboy of the MMO genre but not of any specific game. Just because one disagrees with you does not make them a fanboy. This is, in fact, very disputable.
Anyone who states the Class system is generic and/ or equal to WOW/ WAR clearly has not played the game and has no credibility with that statement. If RIFT can be counted as different this is where.
I have simply, actually, played enough of RIFT to know it is NOT the same as WAR but it does follow, in many ways, the standards of MMOs set over the last several years.

Everything listed is what people like me are acknowledging as being true. Yes Rift uses conventions from the most successful games .. just like every other game on the market that is even somewhat successful. That's agreed, no question.
In fact just look at how deep a hole you guys have dug for yourselves. You're listing as proof that the game is an EXACT COPY of other games that it uses; Graphics, Combat, Factions, Classes, Character Advancement, Crafting, PvP. Please name a game that doesn't use any of these? It would be insane for a developer to not include these in a game ...
What you are failing to do is prove your point that any of these systems is "copy and pasted" from another game. It would be easy to prove .. just post a screenshot. If its a copy paste then it would be obvious, no?
I dunno, am I just fighting a pointless battle here?
I really don't care what your comparisons are nor the alleged stealing of ideas and content. What I do know is that Rift is fun to play, much, much more fun to play than Warhammer Online. So much so, that I cancelled my WAR subscription three days ago and I've pre-ordered Rift already. Rift has some things that I don't care for, but they are far outweighed by the majority of the appealing things. WAR on the other hand, had significant faults, including the latest revamp of PvP and I only kept playing because I had three months left on my subscription.
from the character advancement as in quest and leveling Rift is not on par with WoW nowadays the questiong part of the game got some needed improvements and Rift really feels already old with their quest system.

I have played RIFT and I stated my opinion based on my experience in the game. Calling something by a new name doesn't make it unique or new. There are four archetypes and you can skill your character based on 3 trees. Most games have 3 skill trees. What those trees do may be interesting, and I'm interested to see what types of unique variations people do, but so far it only seems to give the mask of choice, yet most will go straight for the cookie cutter specs (as with WAR and WoW). That's why I put them as equal.
The soul system and unique archtypes and builds won't last long. Eventually on wikis people will find the overpowered builds and they will be the norm, pick anything else and you'll be considered a scrub and won't be invited to dungeons or raids. Same as WoW, there will be certain specs and builds more powerful then others. It'll also be exploited in PvP, certain builds will dominate others.
What has Trion worlds done in the past is what everyone should be asking. In my head there some no name company trying to make a few pockets of money by using WoW / Everquest features on a WAR engine. That recipe does not equal success I'm sorry. Let's not forget empty promises.

Actually you can skill your character/archtype based on 6 trees...you choose 3 of 6, but can have 4 different builds based on 6 trees in-game based on your one archtype. But whose counting when it turns out to be twice what previously thought.

Yeah, like the no-names that every company is that starts up in this genre, including biggies like SOE, Verant Interactive, Blizzard, Turbine Inc., NCSoft, Square Enix, Funcom, Mythic, Cryptic and so forth. Some of them are known for their single player games, but it certainly didn't guarantee an MMO success, did it? Some got their start as a company in the MMO genre and still became pretty successful, didn't they?
Your premise is ridiculous and trying to use it as a means to justify your opinions about the game are ludicrous. What beta has shown us so far is that more people like the game than those who don't, that alone shows that the game has a much brighter future than you have painted it out to be.

OK, then you know there are actually 6 classes per archetype right? You can make three different builds of a mix of any three of the six you have acquired. You will probably have one suited towards solo and the others suited towards different styles played within a group. It is pretty flexible and heads above WOW and WAR in this regards in my opinion.

it isnt about seeming more or less believable. WAR has a free trial, donwload it, try it, then you come here and tell us your input of the experience.
its a frikin clone.
and I dont use the word "clone" lightly, Im very aware of how the gaming industry is based around getting some good ideas from other games and then adding your own flavour to them, or focusing on an aspect of certain game and working on improving it. I can perfectly understand games borrowing from others, WoW borrowed from EQ1, AoC borrowed from WoW, Vanguard borrowed from EQ2, etc etc etc.
Don't forget about the PvP unlocked souls and the hints from Trion that there will be special souls from quest rewards and boss drops that will increase the complexity and diversity of the soul / tree system.
Poster above me, I've played WAR for quite a while. There are similarities, yes, but it is far from a clone and most emphatically not a copy / paste job. You are deluded or outright lying to prove your point.

just not shameless cloning.
Rift is a clone.
clone.
copy pasting.
ctrl+c ctrl+v.
go check it yourself
I blame MUDs. Based on that logic, everything since then is a clone the time-line is just about MUDs, Meridian 59, UO, Lineage, EQ, Ashersons Call, FFXI, etc. to WoW.
MUD games ultimately paved the road for MMORPGs, and no one here is safe from being called a sheep.

you didnt seem to get my point. or maybe you just dont want to.
I was trying to draw a line between ressembling, and shameless cloning.
AoC ressembles WoW, Perpetuum ressembles EvE, DarkFall ressembles Ultima Online.
each of them with at least a handful original features and their twist on what is common ground.
on the other hand Alganon shamelessly cloned WoW, WAR cloned a hell lot of WoW and not enough of DAOC, Shaiya shamelessly cloned Lineage 2 and....yep, Rift shamelessly clones WAR (and by transitivity, WoW).
using a simple analogy, you can get 2 different kids and dress them the same, with the same haircut. they will ressemble each other but each will keep their own distinct features.
now do that with twins, thats a whole different thing.
you can spin it as much as you want, claim the genre is based on copying, yaddayadda about MUDS, Meridian, whatever...people can see the difference between 2 different kids dressed the same, and a pair of twins....and Rift is the frikin Mary Kate of WAR's Ashley.
i know it hurts, but the sooner you come into terms with that, the better for you.
I'm actuall glad Rift is more of the same. I can't think of one game AAA title that has launched in the last few years that has actually been sucessful. Everyone keeps pushing out their product months or even years before they should, and release a buggy product that doesn't run well on any machine, or has so many game breaking bugs that it isn't enjoyable.
To go back to the analogy I saw a few pages back: I like hamburger. Thats why I eat them. I'll try a turkey burger, but if I don't like it I wont eat any more. Problem with MMO's recently, is that my burgers have been raw, and some of them even had hair in them. Yeah, Trion burger looks just like everyone elses, but hey, its cooked all the way.
Edit: and to correct a factual error i saw a few posts back, there are actually 8 soul type available for each archetype, of which, you get to select 3. If my math is correct, there are 1344 unique class combinations. Add on to that you get enough skill points to fill one soul to the top, and dable in another, I think there are probably more play combinations than any there park game I have ever seen.

spot on. but the analogy doesnt stop there
thing is, you already know where good burgers are made, you already like them, the place happens to be close to your home and your friends gather in there. they all like that burgers, they know the owner, and they simply like the place in general.
not many will be driving 20 mins to a different burger that just opened . one which apparently may have just as good but not better burgers...and who knows, maybe after the first impression they end up being not so great.
and you would be going there alone, because most likely your friends are fine staying with the good burger place they already know and like.
Fortunately, many dont have to be shameful about Rift then, since like other titles before it, it is an amalgamation of some very good features that are improved-upon, some familiar features, with a very good technology platform that distinguishes itself from its' predecessors.
The first thing I said when I first logged in was "Man, this is Warhammer all over again!" From the sounds, the environment to the way my character moved. Then I did my first rift and thought, "This is just like a public quest." I even watched a podcast and saw one of the Warhammer developers ....
lol it IS the same guy! Except I think the guy in rift only has the bottom part of the goatee rather than the full chin and mustache.
Granted, when people get fired, they do find new jobs...so I can understand why he is working with Trion now since he got fired from EA, I mean everyone has to eat...
Other than that it is an interesting point you make. Lets hope they put the good of WAR in since this game pretty much is just copying off of other games. Granted they do have their own "new" ideas they are putting in, but all in all, it is the same thing, just different year!
Still might try it though..we will see.

I just happen to be bored with my current burger joint
I'm looking for a new one. I'm more likely to stick with a decent burger for awhile, if everyone elses suck, while I wait for the greatest burger ever to come out. It could be GW2, or SWTOR, or any of several other games soon to release. Or it could be that No one will make a really good burger for 10 more years.

EQ2, and some would say EQ1.
Undeniable people, I don't get why the fanboys have to blindly defend the game. I'll be surprised if it retains 100k subs after the first month. For a 2011 release this is poor at best, at least SW TOR and GW2 are trying different concepts.

Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.
I can perfectly understand games borrowing from others, WoW borrowed from EQ1, AoC borrowed from WoW, Vanguard borrowed from EQ2, etc etc etc.
just not shameless cloning.
Rift is a clone.
clone.
copy pasting.
ctrl+c ctrl+v.
go check it yourself
Don't forget about the PvP unlocked souls and the hints from Trion that there will be special souls from quest rewards and boss drops that will increase the complexity and diversity of the soul / tree system.
Poster above me, I've played WAR for quite a while. There are similarities, yes, but it is far from a clone and most emphatically not a copy / paste job. You are deluded or outright lying to prove your point.
Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.

you didnt seem to get my point. or maybe you just dont want to.
