What a lot of you don't realize that a lot of mmorpg players that have been dissapointed time and time again with bad releases really love playing this game.  As one of those players, that has been playing mmorpgs since 98, I can tell you without a doubt this is what we've been waiting for.  I haven't seen so many people so excited about a game in a long time.  Not even WoW got us this excited.

That being said, I see no real numbers here nor do I see any one here who, remotely, knows what they're talking about. Pessimism breeds contempt and ignorance.  Don't fall into that hole.   Trion has done a fantastic job with keeping the community involved and informed and with providing a truly fantastic beta..  Anyone who played knows this and if they played and are still hating on the game they didn't play very much of it.

I wont even begin to talk about how many subs or pre-sales they have, I don't know.  I don't care.  From what I'm seeing there's going to be a healthy community and with all the plans and work Trion are putting into the game I don't foresee that dropping anytime soon.  Could I be wrong?  Absolutely.  Could I be right?  Absolutely.

I see Rift doing better then WAR and AoC sales at launch for three reasons:

    1. Has a ton of PvE and we all know the PvE community is bigger then the PvP community

    2. Very Polished High Fantasy with a lot of End Game content pre release and post (Hammerknell)

    3. WoW has run it's course for millions of older gamers

I see Rift doing 1 million sales at release and 2 million within 3 months....

The devs have said they are aiming at a 1500 pop per server in an IRC chat. Tey have 29 servers at headstart, so thats what? 45k ? Even if that would be 1/5 of the number of people that can use the server, thats only 225k. I really hope people stop saying millions, that is quite unrealistic.

I read that they had 7.8 million pre-orders (worldwide).  Not that big of a deal if you ask me. Only 7.8 million out of 6 billion people?

Each year there are more and more mmorpg fans becasue the genre isnt that old.

Older generations continue to play them as well as kids growing up and starting to play them.

This has an upward effect that  pushes box sales potential up  year on year for reasonably well known MMORPGs.

Players will desert a mmoropg after less than a month for allsorts of reasons and a huge % of the playerbase are simply cry babies when it comes to the experience of levellign up in competitive environments (eg at launch).

Players do know they can get 30 days use out of a game and it is ok to leave and go back to old favorites too.  Again if it isnt likely to be for life is it such a big decison to buy and try ?

Gameplay mechanics will make or break the game initially and then it will come down to the end game content and the ability of the servers to manage large scale player events without blowing up.

Peoples expectations mean very little for longevity but they do boost box sales.   I reckon Rift will sell 320 k in motnh 1.

I think that Rift could hit 1mio sales, because after 2010 in general, Cataclysm and with SWToR/GW2 so far ahead so many players desperately look for something to cling to now.

But no way it will retain that number and may drop to around 300k soon. Speaking of pve only (because i wouldn't consider rift being a pvp game at all) there is a) endgame and b) replayability to keep players hooked. If raiding isn't interesting for you at times, playing an alt may still be. Rift has but about 0 replayability and i doubt it's endgame will be enough to thrill people longer than ~6 month = bad combination.

On the other hand, the amount of servers so far already looks like not too many players followed them to not be "in Azeroth anymore".

I would bet they sell 433,239 copies by 10:32PM on February 28, 2011.  I base my guess on facts generated from a mathematical model I coded using posts from the internet.  Don't bother reading other replies in your post because mine is the only one based around hard facts that will help in your research.

    /facepalm.

2/3 are poor or too old for MMO's let alone have a pc capable of handling Rift. The other part of the population cant even speak yet because there too young. What an idiot comment lol

Um, I'm pretty sure he made that up as a kind of lame joke.  But good for you for biting.

Do you see they are hiring more now? which means the preorder is better than their expectation.must over 1 million.  back to 6 years ago, there is no many people playing mmo game but today almost at least one in every 2 famaily play mmo game. back with so many positive feedback from beta, 1 million preorder isn't big issue for Trion. Trion is going to make big money to continue develop this game when we consider most copy sold by digital version. on the other hand when people could offer it with digital version, it means their network bandwidth are pretty good which will be good for everyone in this game. this game is in real good shape.

There's a distinct difference between Rift and pretty much every MMO to release after WoW:

    Rift is ready.

Well to be fair that could be for the two other MMO's Trion has in production.  It will be interesting to see how the dev team is after release how many they keep on for future updates they might move some to the syfy project.  I did hear a rumor that they are in the black so good news for the health and further updates.

I think it will go down to 100k after a month. It might even be so bad that they cancle it like Tabula Rasa or change it into F2P.

Yep even if you hate the game... when I took a look at it I was surprised at how ready it was.

I remember in WAR you had to jump over pebbles and grass... just in case.

My brother is more stoked than I am... but I think the game deserves a shot.

Edit - Lots of unrest in WoW Land... even if it's just perception that could help out Rift.

My prediction is 1 million boxes but it will retain 300K subscribers after a couple of months.

When Guild Wars 2 is released that will drop to 100K

Still good numbers, but Rift ain't nothing special, just a decent MMO

I´m not a hater though.  while those games (aoc, warhammer) both started at 1 million, they both fell to 200k within the first few months.  I think because of the openess of Rifts beta (people who buy it probably have a really good idea what they are getting as opposed to AOC which was a rip off) Rift will have a MUCH higher retention rate at least for the first few months.  I honestly expect 300k sales the first month and 400k to 500k players after 3 months.   The game will climb for two reasons... first, word of mouth from current players will be good and because retention rates will be high.... also, there are a LOT of people that will never buy a MMORPG for the first month because of AOC and Warhammer.  Expect a lot of those burned players to jump into Rift after a month or two.

The big question is what happens after 3 months when the majority of players are at max level and playing new content.  Will the devs be able to make a viable game at max level?

Number of pre launch servers says it all really: 29 servers US/EU

So they know that the 46 servers of "open" beta as free play didn't quite match the pre orders.

I suppose they will launch the 15 to 20 additional servers on the retail launch.

So the servers always tell the truth: 400 - 500 K max players on retail launch.

Pretty much the same number of MMO fans that hop from game to game. In fact it will be less than AoC (65 servers), War (113 EU/US servers !) and Aion west.

    That shows a clear trend.

I don't think it will have higher retention rates as the usual things either.

Its very weak point is the Rifts: they will be boring within days.

The game will not climb after 2 or 3 months at all.

And finally everyone will see that the so called "polish" question was never the reasons why Aoc or WAR failed.

Copies never succeed: the game was already played for 6 years and it gets over before it even starts.

There is no reason to invest time and money in an mmo that is a bad copy of a Blizzard game.

  • WrenderWrender Member Posts: 1,386

Blizzard should be concerned. People are sick to death of WoW but there is simply nothing better to play out there...Until now!

RIFT isn't all that great as for as a true social interactive MMO goes but it's a hell of a lot better than what WoW has become!

3 million initial playerbase and steadly rising after release as WoWtards began to slowly show there friends that there is something bettr to play!

    wow what a fan boy..lol

I bet everything is a wow clone to you , right?

I bet alot of the older WoW players (not all) have quit WoW and are loooking for a better game like myself, its called Rift.

I'm glad i quit WoW, the player base seems to be full of crap these days. <sigh> I remember the good old days of WoW....

This thread is hilarious, RIFT will hit one million sale mark easily. I am just so happy with another fantancy MMORPG in the list that will most likely be good.

  • XasapisXasapis Member RarePosts: 6,337

29 servers on the headstart list, whatever that means.

On 29 servers at pre launch  ???. LOL

That's a max capacity of 300K players....Warhammer had 113 servers world wide at launch. WOW has around 650 out of China.

    This gets good.

Before the 1M subs will set in,  the game will need an infrastructure of around 100 servers...

Wake me up when you reach that number ...

It will sell more than SCII that sold 700k units in the US?? http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2010-08-13-starcraft-ii-us-sales-monstrous

    Keep dreaming.

Rift is predominantly a U.S. game, it will do well if it can break 100k sales on release.

People don't realise how small a market the U.S. really is. Blizzard can do 1 million sales on release, but they can only do this with US+Europe+Asia.

    Collector's editions are scams.

  • XasapisXasapis Member RarePosts: 6,337

Given the amount of pre-order servers, it's a 60% US, 40% EU distribution so far.

SC2 was fun for the 4 hours i played it (brutal)

But after that I thought it was such a waste of money.
