Some people on this forum would take it very hard and may abandon this site. Much like the FFXIV fanbois did when that was a tragic failure, I didn't see any of them defending it on here ever again, (which to be honest wasn't a bad thing, some of them were pretty rabid :P).
I was one of those FF14 fanbois, till the launch though :P
But development process of GW2 and FF14 is way too different in my opinion. it was considered a fail for FF14 even when it was on beta which is the last step before launch. On the other hand, A.net could display a playable demo way better than and more polished than most released games long before their release.
I dont want to sound like a fanboy but i dont believe that Anet would release a game that they wont be happy with it themselves. And these guys' taste is similar to ours. (Seriously if you were in the FF14's development team, wouldnt you be ashamed of what you were about to launch? )
And more importantly we, as gamers, should support these kinds of genre chaging(at least hyping to do so) projects, even if they fail at some point (not intending GW2) We should promote them much more. Because companies are wasting good stories, good worlds one by one by creating the same playground of Level up- Grind-> monsters/same quests and then grind-> the same AWESOME godlike boss for your guild's dkp to get to next tier and find yourself in a infinite loop till you find out that you wasted your money this whole time for some increase in dmg points and different textures. Where is the fun in that? It sounds like a chaos theory that goverment plays on us to numb our brains. So as Colin Johanson stated, "I swung a sword, i swung a sword again!" is no fun :P
The thing that made GW so amazing is that normalized challenging gameplay(PVP) solely based on teamwork with insane number of combinations ( like combination of (10*9 classes) for (approx 200 skills) with (7skill+1elite skill) ). And they promised to have this kind of normalized pvp in GW2 too as far as i know. Pvp is the main purpose i want to play gw2 btw.
GW2 is my last hope in MMO genre, if it cannot succeed which i dont believe, i will stop playing MMOs. (i played nearly the whole list of this site )
10 reasons you might or might not think of that makes me not worried about guild wars 2
1. it's a balanced team with a history of good games with various companies under their belts. theres no slackers in the list . great artists, writers, programmers.
2. guildwars is a success, and each expansion got better. I dont see a reason why GW2 would be different from that.
3. they update the public regularly and answer questions. this is critical IMO, we all know what happens when a game company goes silent on a project. ive read and watched everything i can on GW2 and i dont find it nearly as overwelming as alot of the other games being created. WOW's last expansion with the commercials (not saying anything is wrong with wow, or its expansion, its a good game) was more in the spotlight than GW2 has been so far.
4. the company has frequently taken player ideas and put them into guildwars content. people who listen to players dont suck. not to mention the whole "test krewe" they put into practice. sure some of the ideas mentioned by players took an eternity to get into the game, but THEY GOT THERE.
5. ncsoft and arenanet is better off financially than most other companies out there. this means they can take their time. if a company can take its time, the product will always have a much better chance of being good...
6. we play with these people on guildwars. not just on special occasions when new content is out, or when they feel they "need" to make an appearance to raise moral. no, they love their game enough to play daily with everyday gamers. you can find them in heroes ascent, guild vrs guild, fa, jq, pve content. many of them run their own guilds and anyone can join to play with them. to me thats important. when looking at their next game. cause if they didnt care enough to play their first game, they wont put any love into a second.
7. all these cons i keep seeing on youtube have people off the street playing parts of the game. i haven't ever been lucky enough to get to a con yet but if they let some yahoo dressed up as an anime character play their new game with confidence thats gotta be a good sign right?
8. ppl who do game reviews played the game and seemed to enjoy it. i'm sure if it sucked someone would have said so by now...i hope at least.
9. friendly community. go read the guild wars forums..then go read another games forums. you'll know what i mean. friendly players usually means a good game. so if the first games community moves to gw2. you can rest assured you will have a good time there too.
10. blind faith. if indiana jones can step off a cliff onto an illusionary walkway to get to a wooden cup, then i can keep the faith that the first game i ever loved enough to play for 6 years with be followed by a second.
The case isnt "if it was" the real truth is that it will flop. People have to high hopes as always. This wont be the next WoW as so many people think, not in the community way but in the way to where people will come if they are bored and want something new and fun.
It will flop, mark my words.
Nonsense. All ArenaNet have to do for it to be a success is sell a large number of boxes. They don't need to retain subscribers as there aren't any to begin with. Even if it does suck, by your own admission it has huge hype, which is going to generate a significant amount of box sales. Add to that the fact that the Guild Wars franchise already has a large, established fan base, and only a fool would suggest it's going to flop.
The original was a huge success and it never came near World of Warcraft's peak subscriber numbers. A game doesn't have to be WoW to be successful. Once everyone gets that in theirs heads, the MMO scene will be far rosier.
There is definately going to be people that think GW2 is a flop when it's released. There will also be people that feel it's the best thing that ever happened to the gaming industry. It's inevitable that people will have different opinions. GW2 will only be a failure if it's box sales aren't high enough and with the hype, I can't see that happening. It could still be a flop of a game, but it won't fail. And there will be people that will still think it's the greatest game ever. Every person out there has a different opinion, and if it's not the same as mine, well then they're wrong.
All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.

I'll chime in with most of the others have said. There will be a percentage of people who dub the game a flop, or say that it's terrible, or incomplete, or didn't live up to the hype. We all know there's no avoiding that.
But there are also a LOT of people who are playing one or more MMO's with monthly fees that will take a look at the quality graphics, a solid attempt at innovative play in a number of areas, and most importantly - a single box purchase with no monthly obligation.
There's not much else to be said. The initial box sales of this game WILL be absurdly high. Where it goes after that will be anyone's guess.
Ha, if it flops it will fill this forum with raging trolls bashing it left and right till the next "big" thing comes up.
if it dont, then.. it will fill this forum with raging troll bashing it left and right because it does not have the impossible feature that devs never promises that haters/fanboys made up their minds.. til the next "big" thing comes up.
this comunity filled with FPS kids and Grumpy muds Elitists won´t change so soon, no matter how good the game are, people have set their expectation so much far there´s nothing to satisfy their hunger.
now: GW2 (11 80s). Dark Souls 2. future: Mount&Blade 2 BannerLord. "Bro, do your even fractal?" Recommends: Guild Wars 2, Dark Souls, Mount&Blade: Warband, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning.
If ANET can recoupe the cost of course through box sells, and make a minimal profit, then i would not think they would consider it a flop. Now, if they want to do that and all retire with millions on some beach in mexico forever, that's a different story. I guess all could be said for any game and their dev company though.

I think this has been said before, but if only GW2 flops, then it won't really change things much. It'll be a huge dissapointment, yes, but a lot of people will just keep playing the same MMOs they are now (or SWToR). If both GW2 anad SWToR flops, then things could get very bad for the genre. With no really big MMOs to look forward to, many people would probably either give up on, or leave the MMO genre for a while.
A lot of people seem to be playing mmos trying to hold out until something better comes along. However, I can see (and not just on these forums) a lot of people getting burnt out waiting for a more permanent / fun MMO to release without major bugs / content gaps.
Thats like asking if a tree falls in a forest does it make a noise. No one would care (besides the few fanbois on forums) and the mmo industry would move on.
GW2 and SW:TOR will most likely not lose money, they probably won't make the profit they expect too either.
Now for me a MMO is a flop if it doesn’t hold my attention for let’s say a year (just a random length of time I feel that I have got my money's worth out of it).
I have been following both these games for a while and I think GW2 has a much better chance at being that game. If you were to ask me a year ago if there was any chance I would not play TOR I would have said no, now there’s pretty much no way I see myself playing it.
GW2 on the other hand, the more I hear about it the better it looks (and as of right now there’s no way I will not play it).
I have played CoH, GW, WoW, DAoC, DCUO, and Rift and the only ones of those I would consider “not a flop” is WoW and GW. They are the only ones I played more than a month. And I know its people like me that are the problem.
See a game, looks good, buy it, play a month, quit. They just made $75 off me for a crap game.
I would like to truly believe that if GW2 flops it will shake the foundation of the MMO world and make more of us more cautious, but it probably won't.
There seems to be so much at stake regarding GW2. The hopes and dreams of the hardcore MMO community are being gambled with this game, and the hype meter has never been stronger. What do you think would happen if GW2 became a major let down? Would this have some sort of long term effect on the MMO community? Would it make people never to get hyped again for another MMO?
And how many of us have actually played WoW? I know I haven't. The main reason I'm excited about GW2 is that it actually looks like fun, unlike WoW, so I just can't see it flopping.
a disaster of biblical proportions... Old Testament, real wrath of God type stuff... Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies! Rivers and seas boiling! Forty years of darkness! It certainly won't need 10+ million subs or nearly what TOR needs to be deemed a successful MMO, and that bodes well.

Well it depends on what you consider a "flop".
GW2 and SW:TOR will most likely not lose money, they probably won't make the profit they expect too either.

we will all go back to wow?
I think they should hurry up and release it , because this hype is starting to hurt them more than help them.
(four+ years is way to long to hype a game)
It's time for more than just "Hey , look at this amazing game we haven't finished yet "
It's time for more than just " It will be done when it's done"
Your going to itirate yourselves out of a job Arenanet.
The End Of Worlds!!! :P
Im guessing 80% will go to SWTOR. the other 20% will cut their wrists...lol
I would cut my wrists before i ever touch another SoE product.
The world would explode.
He said TOR, not SOE's SWG.
And how many of us have actually played WoW? I know I haven't. The main reason I'm excited about GW2 is that it actually looks like fun, unlike WoW, so I just can't see it flopping.
Sorry , havent followed anything Star Wars since NGE.
If Lucasarts let it happen once.....I wouldn't give them a chance to let it happen again.
I would say 80 archage, 20% tor
rpg/mmorg history: Dun Darach>Bloodwych>Bards Tale 1-3>Eye of the beholder > Might and Magic 2,3,5 > FFVII> Baldur's Gate 1, 2 > Planescape Torment >Morrowind > WOW > oblivion > LOTR > Guild Wars (1900hrs elementalist) Vanguard. > GW2(1000 elementalist), Wildstar
Now playing GW2, AOW 3, ESO, LOTR, Elite D
