a disaster of biblical proportions... Old Testament, real wrath of God type stuff... Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies! Rivers and seas boiling! Forty years of darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes... The dead rising from the grave... Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together... mass hysteria!
Classic!
I tend to agree with the 1st half dozen or so replies to this question... namely that GW2 is pretty well set for success, since it doesn't rely on monthly subs. ANet takes their time to get it done right, and based on everything seen to date it looks like it will sell.
It certainly won't need 10+ million subs or nearly what TOR needs to be deemed a successful MMO, and that bodes well.

Man, I was just clicking in on this thread to post that very quote from Ghostbusters. Gotta go get me some new material...
GW2 "built from the ground up with microtransactions in mind" 1) Cash->Gems->Gold->Influence->WvWvWBoosts = PAY2WIN 2) Mystic Chests = Crass in-game cash shop advertisements
As long as TOR or another MMO becomes a hit very little would happen if it would be a disaster for ANET and NC soft.
But if Both GW2, TOR and all other future MMOs would flop we would be in trouble, particularly if Titan flops as well. That would mean that MMOs isn't worth the bother for the publishing houses and that we wont get any new well funded games. It could happen and it would mean the end of genre as we know it.
It is far from impossible, maybe the genre really is dying and turning back into the small indie genre it once was when we could choose between Meridian 59 and the realm (1996 for you who don't know your history).
I think it is very unlikely, I am opretty sure both GW2 and TOR will at least do fine, probably better and that Titan will sell alot as well.
But the genre does of course not fall or stand with GW2, it is one of a few well funded AAA MMOs in development. WE just need one big success to prove for the publishers that this still is a genre worth investing in.
There seems to be so much at stake regarding GW2. The hopes and dreams of the hardcore MMO community are being gambled with this game, and the hype meter has never been stronger. What do you think would happen if GW2 became a major let down? Would this have some sort of long term effect on the MMO community? Would it make people never to get hyped again for another MMO?
Guild Wars 2 being a "flop" is simply not possible. All the profits regarding the game come from the initial sale of it which is almost always driven by hype. Sure, people might stop playing later on, but that doesn't matter because they already paid the same amount of money if they quit or not.
Hype sells games more then reviews ever could. Most games that have high expectations still sell well even if they are poorly recieved. Pretty much all the recent MMOs are in this boat. Problem with them was that they have to actually keep customers to be successful.

Anything is possible, it is just unlikely. For one thing could the game get moved back a lot...
But yes, GW2 have the potential to sell a lot. I think it will be a rather popular gift from parents since they know they wont have to cough up the same monthly fee as if the kid plays Wow.
Still, it will need long term success. Selling 2 million boxes at launch and nothing later wont be enough for the game to survive unless some people buy a lot of fluff in the itemshop.
Admittedly, the little devil on my shoulder wants TOR and GW2 to flop. But the gamer in me wants to enjoy both so I guess Id be indifferent if it flopped.

You like the suffering of others so much you'd even be willing to have inferior games to get it?
My personal hope is that all the upcoming MMOs are =twice= as awesome as advertised, and that the fanboys are shocked and confused by how much =better= the games are than they expected.
I want gaming to be so good that even as people play it, they keep slapping ourselves, wiping drool off the keyboard as they gasp out in incredulous voices "I can't believe I'm having so much fun with my clothes on!"
... then I want the NEXT generation of games to be all 'Oh no you didn't, we'll have to be TEN times better than that, just to show you we can be even better!". THen they're 20 times better, just because.
(Side note. Do not confuse my hopes and desires with my expectations)

u, sir, deserve a cookie. a chocolate chip cookie. i want the same thing as u do!
imo, if GW2 flops, every other MMO company out there will become even more cautious than they already are in trying something new. we will then see more of the same crap as we have been seeing for the past couple of years as a result.

I never thought about people suffering if those games flopped. The visual im getting from that scenario is really bizarre heh. I think that video games should get exponentially better as each year passes, so by now, our heads would have exploded from the awesomeness.

Within your GW2 community and bubble you would be disappointed, get over it and move on, just like every other game or film you've been hyped about.
For the rest of the MMO players who have never played GW's and have no interest in GW2 (i.e. all the WoW players, EQ players, LOTRO players, AOC players, AION players, Starwars players, Superhero game players, Final Fantasy players, Rift players and so on and so on) then nothing would happen at all, they would continue to play their games and maybe one of them might look up briefly and say "GW2? Nope, never played it, heard it was a bit arcadey".
Maybe the OP needs to get over himself a little and realise that GW2 is not the be all and end all of the MMO world. It is in fact a small fish in an ever growing ocean.

I dont see them 'flopping' much. They will get most of there money of the box sales, and then the expansions. Financially, they wont flop. They wont need 10+ million subs.
Admittedly, the little devil on my shoulder wants TOR and GW2 to flop. But the gamer in me wants to enjoy both so I guess Id be indifferent if it flopped.
It would be the end of MMO's for me utill someone came around like ArenaNet that could do it rght.. I'm pretty well burned out on the old MMO formulas and not interested in any of the garbage out there now.
Take a look at Archage dude. Between Archage/TOR/GW2 one of these 3 will do it for me. Most likely I'll play all three heh. Should go over real well with the wife 3 new ones plus eve um yeah but I digress. If all three of these are utter fail which I doubt - I will be done with the genre in general for a few years. Nice thing is you always got EvE to fall back on (hopefully).
TOR looks tight and alot of fun
GW2 looks tight and alot of fun plus it changes the traditional formula enough to be super interesting.
Archage is my true hope for a UO nostalgia replacement game that I can get 10 feet deep into it's gameplay.
No. I have only heard one or two negative reviews about the game, and that was simply because it wasn't the game for them, they were used to the grindfest. If there were any major problems we probably would have heard them by now.
2) Do I think it will be perfect from the launch?
No. I don't think it is possible to make games perfectly and not having to tweak things that aren't quite right. Something like a small number of people's computers might not run it proparly for some small coding error that was overlooked, etc.
3) Do I want the game to be a flop?
Well... ish. I want the game to be a game I enjoy.
Also, I know this sounds mean, but I don't really want it to be a game that 10 year olds end up flocking to and running the experience by just getting in the way and CAPS LOCK SPAMMING EVERYWHERE SO I CAN'T SEE MY FRIEND TALKING TO ME. I want it to be a game where you have to have a certain level of gaming experience to play. I don't mind new players but you don't have to CAPSLOCK SPAM everywhere. Ideally it would have a personality test that you have to pass in order to keep annoying people out of the game.
4) What will happen if it turns out to be a flop?
MMO genre will take a large blow and many people won't try any new mmos for a while and be very cautious about new titles, but life goes on.
No matter what; GW2 will live on because it will cater to a niche market like it did with GW1. So I don't expect GW2 to flop.

If GW2 dont deliver i stick with games like Skyrim / witcher 2 like games and ofc the rare masterpieces like Battlefield 3 wich can be quite entertaining for a an hour or 2.

Game won't flop. Some people are so against the idea of it being a hit that no matter what level of success it reaches, there will be the same ignorant ideas and facts thrown our way without any real support to show how it failed.
That being said if our reality turns inside out and trades places with an alternate demension and the planets all align and the mark of the beast shows up on our doors somehow contributing to the game flopping, we will only see SW fans making larger than usual appearences in GW2 forums wagging fingers and sayen I told you so. All the while their game manages to not do so well either and now we are all here scratching our heads and wondering WTF happened and who is to blame. Then we all move on.
I am so bored atm that I will play SW if it comes out first. If GW2 doesnt thrill me, I may take a long break from MMORPG's and no sub for SWTOR. Or I may just try another.

I think the payment model alone is a win.
For me nothing would change, im a fan of MMO's not a specific MMO.
But fanboys would cry and haters would revel in it. But that is nothing new.
