    I purchased 6 Collector's Editions.

1 for me, 1 for my spouse, 2 for friends in Australia, 2 for saving to sell at a later date.

I don't know if a price breakdown has been talk about in this thread, so I'll give it a shot. All this talk about CE being too expensive has been bugging me.

When you buy a CE of ANY game, you're not just buying the game itself (I hope people realize that by now). You are buying all of the extra goodies you get along with a CE. Let's look at the cost breakdown of each of these "goodies" if you buy them individually from the CE (I am going to be conservative with my estimates and what I've seen from other CE to many other games).

    1. Exclusive Gentle Giant Darth Malgus statue - $30

    2. Star Wars: The Old Republic game disks in collectible metal case - $65 (new super hyped games usually go for $60 nowadays, the extra $5 is for the metal case)

    3. The Journal of Master Gnost-Dural annotated by Satele Shan - $10

    4. The Old Republic Galaxy Map - $5

    5. Custom Security Authentication Key - $30 (paying for the CE customization and software, I'm pretty sure later, dumbed down versions will cost less)

    6. Music of Star Wars: The Old Republic - $10

    7. High-quality Collector's Edition Box - $5 (A lot goes into making a hard cardboard box with pretty art from box designer to the dude pushing the button to press the cardboard)

    8. 7 In-Game Items - I having nothing to compare these items, except for the exclusive items, to other than time it would take to acquire them so let's say a month so that's $15 (if that is the monthly fee)

So all in all that is about $170, we can't get an exact number until the game is released and these items are put onto the market individually. It looks like to me that we are saving money buying it all in a bundle.

Please, if you do not agree with the prices please state why. If you have actually seen these items on sale individually, provide the link so that we all can buy...eerrr...I mean learn of their true value.

That kind of statement right there bugs me just as the same kind of sweeping statement from the other side of the fence does. These forums are international with people from all over the world using various currencies which all have vastly different worth, some worth a lot more than the US dollar and the CE was still a LOT more expensive.

If it had actually cost $150 where i live I would possibly have bought it with the thinking i'm probably paying a little too much but i'd have gotten over it, it didn't though, it was the equivilent of $212. It may not seem a lot to some people but the extra $60 put me off completely, the difference in price of the CE in the UK compared to the US was more than the full price of any other new MMO. My currency is and has always been a lot stronger than the US $, i dread to think how much the CE cost in countries who's currency isn't as strong as either the $ or the £.

Personally there was nothing in the CE box that really tickled my fancy and the virtual items did not interest me, experience has taught me nothing of significance will stay exclusive for long.

And this is coming from a massive Star Wars fan with a sizeable collection of GL's crack-like merchandise.

  • SiveriaSiveria Member UncommonPosts: 1,421

Honestly, I think the CE"s astronomical price tag is just there to prey on fans of the series. Which IMO is quite a low-blow by bioware. The extra stuff in the box is in no way worth almost 90-100 extra dollars on the price tag. Then again I am more pratical in my spending, If I am not going to use/look at something often enough to warrant buying it. I usually won't buy it even if I am a fan, because to me its a waste of money. Doesn't matter if that money is what i'd like to call disposable income or not to me.

I'm a big fan of anime, and there is alot of nice merchandise but I just can't justify spending 50 dollars on a figurine I am maybe going to look at once in a blue moon, it'd just sit on a shelf collecting dust. I usually buy little things like posters and such since they are inexpensive, and you notice them easly on the walls. Haven't bought any in 8 years though no shops for that kind of stuff where I now live.

I personally don't plan to touch SW:ToR till I get to play it via a trial etc, far too many games have been hyped up them have been fairly bad and/or underwhelming games when released, not just in the mmorpg market but the pc gaming market as well. From the outside it looks simmlar to WoW int he combat and linear quest progression sense, but I haven't played it, and I'd rather see for myself than listen to someone else, since most of the sw:tor buyers seem to be fans of SW/Bioware already and they are sort of bias so can't exactly trust their opinion. I am more cautious due to buying Aion based on the hype and I ended up feeling disapointed, not to mention if you read my sig thats what my friend said about its gameplay, but still I wanna try it for myself.

I am also worried about why Bioware has decided not to have a open beta.. I bought wow at release, due to trying the open beta and liking it, same for Fallen Eath and various other mmo's. If it wasn't for the OB i'd have never bothered with said games probally ever. Besides OB is a real good way to put the servers thru some hell and see how they cope. a closed beta with limited playtimes just cannot do that. Maybe even call it just a stress test for the servers, and be sure to let the players know to expect server issues, crashes and lag since they are testing the servers limits.

I'm neither a big Star Wars far, nor am I am big bioware fan, So I care more about the games actualy gameplay, Since no matter what IP its based on or who makes the game, it can still be bad, though since it is a bioware game and bioware has a really good track record, Its pretty safe to bet on SW:ToR being at least decent gameplay wise. I'd probally get my copy Via digital download, its easier for me, and since they just have to produce a new cd-key its virtually unlimited copies available.

Being a pessimist is a win-win pattern of thinking. If you're a pessimist (I'll admit that I am!) you're either:

    A. Proven right (if something bad happens)

    or

    B. Pleasantly surprised (if something good happens)

Either way, you can't lose! Try it out sometime!

    The Witcher 2 Collector's Edition: $129.99

The SW:TOR costs 120 pounds for the British folks among you. 120 pounds = $196.64

    What an enormous rip-off.

The problem with that figure for me is, how much is 120 pounds worth to a brit? Compared to how much $150 is to an American?

As an example $150 is my typical electric bill.

I think you may find your answer here.

Oh, and I just found out that when converting euros to dollars, the collector's edition costs around $220. Nice money grab you got there, EA.

Ah well, I guess it's just a typical "screw europe"-thing.

Actually, the Euro is a typical screw europe thing ;P

If the price bothers people that much, it is simple, you do not have to buy it.

All this fuss over the price of a completely optional product is laughable.

£120 is worth a fair bit to us. Excluding food and mortgage £120 is around what my monthly household bills come to for everything including electricty, phone, TV, 50 meg broadband etc.

Yeah i was just looking at COL in the UK, 300 or so pounds is the average yearly electric bill. I'm not sure what to make of it really, $150 is my monthly electric, another 50 for cable, 50 for internet. Cell bill is around 30= $280 either that CE is worth the price of gold in your country or power and bills in genreal are far different. If it's the former holy hell. How much does an Xbox 360 run there?

It varies from place to place but before they closed down (all computer game stores have closed down in my town) an XBOX360 was still going for about £120-130 new. MMO's usually cost me £29.99 when released despite the RRP of £39.99.

I ended up with the Digital Deluxe version at £59.99 when i saw the price of the CE the day the pre-orders went live. When i had read $150 i had expected the price tag to be around the £80 mark so was surprised to see it selling for £129.99 which converted is $212, a far cry from $150.

I think for many of us it's not a case of not being able to afford it but the vast difference in price making it hard to justify paying it for what amounts to a map and a figurine.

That puts it into perspective I still see Xbox 360's around 150 or so here, It's roughly the same price in both realms in terms of VG averages.

Also yeah i agree I see no point in paying 80+ for a game, let alone 150 in this case. Always happy with the standard here :).

First off i'm going with physical items.

The gentle giant statue is marked at $75.

If your curious as to retail price this is something close to the 75 mark i could find that looked similar http://www.gentlegiantltd.com/product_p/11697.htm Just to show i'm not just picking some figure out of the sky. That 75 dollars is gentle giants retail mark if you have issues with that, then it's gentle giants' pricing you have a problem with not Bioware's pricing.

That brings the 150 mark down to 75.

Then lets take the retail price of the game at $60.

Here is the link to the retail price at amazon http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Old-Republic-Pc/dp/B001CWXAP2/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1311339453&sr=8-2

That brings it to the new prices of $15.

Then lets take the price of the authenticator which i'm marking at $5 (sorry i don't have a link for this, but Blizzard sold theirs for $7 dollars so i marked it down 2 dollars so the math would stay easy)

That brings it to the new prices of $10

That means for 10 dollars you get the in game store, the early acces, the crystal, driods and all the other stuff that comes with it. Not a bad deal really if you look at it. What needs to be decided is if all the virtual stuff is worth that cost to you as those don't have a market retail value to judge against.

Edited it to make the post look better.

  • I am buying the CE specificly because of the Darth Malgus GG statue. Even at a 6.5" mini-statue it would still cost around 65-80$ to pick one up if they sold it off of their main site. I figure if the standard is 60 dollars and I want a statue worth about 80 dollars then I am only paying 10 extra bucks for all the other little goodies + everyone knows authenticators are truly amazing pieces of technology when it comes to account security. Well worth the money, and honestly I feel they are under costing the CE for what they put in it. I am rather pleased, and couldn't be happier with the purchase. Now waiting on the release is a completely other story.

oh, don't forget... £49.99 for the STANDARD edition via Origin

    https://preorder.origin.com/?&locale=en_GB

I don't remember Steam ever charging me a £5 premium to use their service... in fact they usually save me money.

    EA are such robbing bastards.

The 5$ is the amount of money they charge you for the pre-order. Then they charge you the rest once the games come out.  Have you never pre-ordered a game before? I mean when I walk into EB games I yell at them for telling me to put 5$ down for a pre-order constantly because they are ripping me off with a pre-order fee. O wait... Yeah you need to actually figure out some basics in life before posting on a site like this man. You have absolutely no clue what you are talking about.
