I am surprised that people are upset at all. If it is a 'you survived, here is a prize' (with a chance for a really NICE prize based on random rolls) it works for me. No one goes away feeling like they wasted their efforts.
I like the way this loot system works. Yet again it is a small group of people screaming that they don't like something, because it isn't exactly like WoW. However, if they had copied WoW's loot system exactly these same people would be screaming that they didn't innovate, and why is it the same as WoW.

Again, with Item Mods what makes an item in ToR epic?
The number of Mods it allows? What kinds of Mods it allows? The strength of the Mods it Allows?
Need more info.
This system is great for turning those awesome armor sets into vanity items. Which is scary cause they can make some really cool looking sets, sell them in a cash shop, and honestly say they are only vanity items.
"Epic" or "Max Level" gear would depend first, on what kind of gear it is. PvP or PvE. Some gear does have stats inherent in the gear, for instance, PvP gear will likely have a base stat modifier geared towards PvP, as they've stated that top tier PvP gear only warrants a 10% increase.
This would be similar for PvE gear. While some gear may have more slots (But there is a cap on the amount of slots) you'll likely end up with top tier gear with the max slot amount, plus a small percentage. While it won't completely overpower you with that extra percentage, for those that want max stats, they'll strive for that gear.
Overall you'll get a percentage rate increase, but comparably the mods you select will spec your gear more than the actual gear does, but thats not to say epic gear won't be worth striving for.
Thank you for more info.
Percent increases attached to gear is kind of a sweet idea, cause any mods you pick will get the benefit.
Very cool.

The loot bags / tokens are fine for rewarding participation, but i understand the need for the reward of a special drop.
I guess if your the type who had bad experiences of competing with your guild leaders girlfriends 3rd alt.. perhaps this is the MMO you seek better guilds in??
SWTOR. Face it, in the Scooby Doo Mystery Solving Van of coolness, this game is Velma. In this current MMO climate it has about as much chance for survival as a group of inquisitive teenagers in a 1980s slasher flick. -Tardcore May, 2011

Yeah, but noone feels like they actually earned anything either if it is a give away. The marks/plaques system like in WoW/Rift is cool. Just handing out free epics sort of makes it pointless to even try.
I guess they realized WoW got some big subs because this is essentially what Tier 8/9 was in WoW where the gear because so deflated and everyone had it. Who knows how they will balance it, but they are walking a fine line of making content pointless to run and requiring severely fast updates to appease the masses who get tired fast.
Who wants to spend several hours doing a raid so I can get geared up, while they get nothing?
I would. I bet your friends and guildmates wouldn't mind either. That is the best part of the games to me, helping others. This system won't change that. Players that have all the best gear/stats are going to be helping players who do not have it.
Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.
The thing I find most insteresting in this debate is all this talk about how it takes away from the feeling of "earning" sometihng. See here is the thing, I get paid a salary, and all of the people who do the same job as me get paid roughly the same, it doesn't take anything away from my feeling of having earned my money to know that my friends A or M got paid the same amount to do the same thing I did.
Anything that takes the focus off gear grinding in MMOs is a step in the right direction as far as I'm concerned.. I really didn't have much of an intention of buying this game, but i have, just out of curiousity, and to support this move.

Well, this is one of the big reasons communism doesn't work. Many people do feel they should get rewarded for the amount of work they do. If everyone got paid the same, a whole lot of people would just slack off because, "hey, I'm getting paid the same either way." You've never worked harder than you were expected to in order to get a promotion?

I'm tempted to be sarcastic... Given some of the 733t kiddie attitudes... But I'll restrain myself... ^^ The idea that every one in a raid/operation should get something is LONG over due. I'm LONG past sick and tired of showing up time after time after time, on the faint chance of getting some upgrade. In many guilds, unless you are part of the "in circle" you can forget about getting any chance of up grades. This looks like a much better approach.
Good lord, I hear you on that. I was in a guild, with actual real life friends, whom I went to school with and went out to dinners with that were quoted in saying.." Your nothing untill you hit lvl 80".. (guess what game). I was left out and speechless, left the guild and the server.. some "friends".. I make it sound bad, which it was in a game stance but, we still hang.
The point being is I am tired of the wait , wait , wait attitude for raids, only to get in and get nothing, and the dumbest thing ( to me ) in that atmosphere would be someone wanting items for their alts even when it would benifit another's MAIN. I've seen it more than a few times.. "My alt needs that to finish his epics!!11oneone! !... "We'll, I need it to start mine, I dont even have ONE..".. "Come on dont be a child, let him finish his epic gear first." .... How about, you want it for an alt.. PLAY your alt. >.<
I like ST:TOR system so far, Im all for it and MORE.
Communism doesn't work because it restricts people's freedom. It has nothing to do with people earning the same money. If u slack off and dont do your job u get fired in most societies god knows what they do in communist countries probably charge u with treason ane execute u.
That said the loot drops for everyone running a raid on each boss drop is a good thing. Why should u have to fight for loot with others. I never understood that. Sure it makes u have to run the raid over and over multiple times till people get the gear to beat it. That said it sucks for those that have no time to do raids much
It also causes issues in guilds. Not all guildies help there lower geared players gear up either. i was in a guild suggested if they wanted the people who hit 80 after them to get gear it waas faster to run them in raids then do heroics over and over. I ended up in a huge argument and got booted from guild just for suggesting the better geared players help out those not geared.
This happens more then u think also. People who feel they are better then others because they hit max level first arent as willing to help others in there guild as ud think.

It is one of the reasons it doesn't work. I didn't say it was the biggest or the only one. Don't be naive. If everyone gets paid the same, the standard goes down. I agree with everything else you wrote.

bioware isnt stupid, they can see how catering to newbs is the secret to mass success as there are many more newbs than hardcore players. WoW has slowly overtime made its game easier and more accessible to newbs to the point where there are very few aspects left which require any skill. Bioware is just trying to follow in those footsteps by making it very easy to get loot. Everyone gets a contanier with an item suited to there class on every boss, you really couldnt make it any more newb friendly than that every boss new loots you will need to raid for a week to be done.
Do I like this? No, but I hate newbs and I hate what they have done to WOW to be so successful but I dont think its a bad move by bioware there are so many newbs out there and Im sure this makes them wet.
I love the loot containers idea. It's not breaking the game, you still have the feel of chance, but you won't leave empty handed. Remember some raids didn't give some classes gear. Which led healers or tanks to not run that perticular instance, now this helps a lot. They say you won't have to fight for your loot.
This solves two problems, ninja's and lost-hopes. I know all about raiding, I know how some of you feel. This changes a lot though, so don't feel bad. This is rewarding people for doing work, not jumbling a potluck
It's about time they realised that wow's retarded stingy drop rate and looting system is not the way to go. I say good idea but to be fair JGE devs came up with that idea first. They just have not released JGE yet. I say loot machanics should not cause fatigue. There should be a fast progression to the top. Just make your game fun to play even after you have all the best gear and your good. I think world of tanks is the best example of fun combat, we just need that combat system in a persistent world like we have come to expect for our monthly fee.
*adds "wellfare epics" to his list of childish terms, right in between "WoW killer" and "WoW Clone"*
Thanks I admit to not seeing that term till now, and personally I like the idea of Star Wars: The Old Republic's "loot containers" as it helps gets rid of DKP management, loot drama, and the random PUG member needing on every item.
Because flying a Minmatar ship is like going down a flight of stairs on an office chair while firing an Uzi.

In MMORPG's typing is the only skill required, it just ticks me a bit when some folks act like because you have to push certain buttons in a certain time frame etc that it requires skill most of these mmo's that folks say require skill are no more difficult to master than the first super mario bros game was and yeah at the time it first came out it was pretty hard in some parts but fast forwards all these years later we are familiar enough with the different ways devs impliment "skill" that it really isn't worth mentioning as so many mmo players do.
Maybe they should just put a big lever in the middle of town and whenever you pull it, you get a prize. That seems much more convenient. Less drama, and we don't have to worry about wasting time killing things.

Maybe. It seems more like putting makeup on the gear grind to me, though.

When he says class-specific gear I hope he means one class can wear said peice no 3 or 4 classes as I feel that causes problems in community.
