Unless your name is Blizzard and your game is named World of Warcraft you will be forced to PR spin retention rates. Everyone will have to do it, even our buddies at Bioware and A-net.
Because of WoW if a game loses subs at all or isnt above millions of subs its a failure which is complete bullshit.
Fuck man i dont even like rift right now, im pissed that i have nothing to do in the game but i wont sit by as morons call it a dead game lol.
You don't like Hammerknell? I haven't been there yet, but I actually find GP, DH, RoS and GSB a lot of fun.
I basically only raid and I like progression and boss fights so I guess that's why I still play. Granted my free time is limited so I basically meet for the raids and that's about it. LOL
I've done full clears of GSB, RoS, GP and DH. I got tired of logging in at the same time five days a week like RIFT was my new job.
so now im on a I hate all raid progression kick until this genre delivers an alternative outside raid progression in pve.
There sure are a lot of negative comments about the sub numbers. Can't anyone be happy about them having over 1 million active subs without being a dick and attempting to claim ~ well such and such MMO doesn't have that many or this website {xfire, etc} says otherwise as if they know all or are equal, or lastly, "but are those really active accounts they're counting too" sheesh!
This is what I personally don't get. Everyone complains about MMO's being flop and epic fails and Rift comes along.... seems to be doing well and everyone jumps up and says no this is impossible it's failing like the rest. Rift isn't anything new if you want to compare it to WoW. They are very much alike however I'd honestly say if you consider RIfts age compared to WoW.... isn't off to a bad start in terms of content ingame. People should look back at just how much content WoW had 6 months after release. It isn't as much as Rift.
I don't play Rift because I'm more of a PvP action guy and personally waiting for a good MMO shooter like Firefall. RIft is doing fine and I tip my hat off to Trion for the rate at which they have been updating their game. I do believe Rift has gotten as much content updates as WoW gets in a year.

Yeah I haven't hit that wall yet. I'm sure I will and need a break. But for PvE if you don't like Raid Progression - it lacks at level 50. The game is basically all that right now until they come up with that new Chronicle thing they've been talking about.
But I also won't sit by like morons thinking the game has 1 million subs (Not implying you think this)
The point is you don't know if they have a million subs. Most are just saying Trion's lying or misleading with that number. You're basically saying that if people believe Trion, they are morons.
It's not like people are pulling this number out of thin air.
Personally I'm skeptical, but considering how active my server is and how many people play on a given night - I think it's possible.

Wonder where all these players came from.
Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.

Are they? I wouldn't know, I stopped following that game after I realized they had about 1/10 of the content they said they would have at launch.

True I may not know but they have done this exact thing before. Announced 1 million accounts and people went crazy thinking they had 1 million subs. Now they say 1 million customers and again people think its active subscriptions. I think if they really did have 1 million active subs, they would come out and say it clearly.
I'll gladly eat my words, Its a great game and deserves everything is has achieved.
I so wish for Trion that it would be 1mio SUBS BEING PAID MONTHLY so they can push the development further and bring Rift to it's actual potential.
But, come on...1mio "users", "registrations", " accounts", "units shipped"...I'm getting SO SICK of this PR bullshit. It seems like every other company is so trying to find whatever term it takes just to anounce "something 1 million". Talk to me when it's about monthly paid subs, as i am not interested in any more PR spin.
And why does it never happen that the interviewer EVER NAILS THEM DOWN TO GIVE A STRAIGHT ANSWER?!
But we've seen it before...this time the headline is "1 mio, baby!!" and all of a sudden 6 month after it's "we're excited to introduce our freemium-blabla subscription model" = F2P because players run off and there never were 1mio subs to begin with.
To be specific this was JUST announced at one of the biggest video game conventions in the world. Gamescom.
So if you were going to roll out a big announcement, that would be the place to do it.
Regardless if they actually have 1 million subs or not, they said they are the second largest MMO in the West.
So on that point they are either lying or telling the truth. If they're telling the truth, then their user number needs to be big enough to be the second largest doesn't it?
I get the skepticism, but some of the comments do come off more like denial.

Doesn't EVE has 600k?
they topped out at around 340k then went down. some say they are hovering around 330k.
no other p2p mmo has a sub number close to that in the NA/Euro.
People forget that NA/Euro gamers dont really like mmorpgs... the ones that play WoW dont even know what an mmorpg is.
This genre is more of a asian thing because its extremely cheap.
take a look at the average sub totals in every game outside of WoW, Rift and EvE... Its like 50k lol.
LotRo is bigger for sure. Before going F2P it already had more players than RIFT has now (thanks to EU playerbase). 3rd in line? Not realy IMO. GuildWars is a Western product as well and has 1M+ active players (5M+ sold copies ifn ot more).
Perhaps RIFT is 4th in place now, but WTH. AoC once had a bigger playerbase than LotRo as well, and look where it's now.
Now dont be silly.
Lotro had at most 250k subs before its shift to F2p. it was just under EvE which had around 340k, Aoc was near death between 50k-75k subs.
Who knows now that Lotro & AoC are F2p.
Check mmo chart sites.
With AoC there is recent news that they gained over 300k with in the first month of going F2P, how many stuck around is unknown.

Interesting I could of sworn I saw something about EVE having 600k subs, but it probably from a forum. LOL
launched with 99 servers and down to 64 servers, mostly low/medium population.
lol, nice marketing BS.
They closed servers?
They opened free transfers, so everyone moved around to fill up the other 60+ servers. Trion disabled character creation on the others and uses them for test shards and trial character creation.
Everyone know Rift lost subs, the remaining servers are all very healthy population wise.
Believe me Rift is as far from death as you could get so dont go blowing up the reduction in servers like the end is near.
The fact is, they had to close those servers. They just put it under the umbrella of "test server" to save face. But anyone who doesn't know that those servers were technically closed and people merged into other servers is just being naive. Now, obviously they've lost subs, nobody can deny that. And they'll lose even more when SWTOR and GW2 hit. That can't be questioned. To be fair to Trion though, the closed...errr...test servers...are a result of them opening up a ton of new servers on launch day to combat the wait queues of so many players logging in across all their servers. In essence, they overcompensated. Once their populations started to thin out, they had no choice but to close servers. They just didn't want to publicly admit to it, so they came up with the "test server" BS. I'd have just preferred if they were just honest and said, "Look, on launch day we opened a ton of servers because we wanted to make sure everyone got to play in a timely fashion. Obviously, once the population settled down, we felt the need to tighten up server pops by reducing the amount of active servers." I see nothing wrong with that. But instead, they felt the need to create some fictional "test servers." I mean, really...30 of them? What game has 30 test servers?
they've closed three more in the last two weeks. from 67 down to 64 now. two were US servers.
This How shit goes when you offer free transfers every 7 days to the entire game population.
Honestly they could have left all 90 servers up, we could have 10-15 extremely low population shards.
Honestly who cares right? Blizzard does it dont they? with cross server queues they have more dead servers than Rift has active ones yet its fine because everyone plays lobby games in WoW.
The fact that those 60 servers are damn near packed during primetimes means the game is healthy. The only misstep trion made was opening too many servers to compensate for queues.
How many mmos do you know that are p2p with 60 active servers?

OT: I am hopeful about the new chronicle since I am not a raiding type anymore.
The million users seems reasonale with subs and trials included. Subs alone I kinda doubt because they would have announced that from the rooftops.
