rift is dead on with Aion according to xfire and we all know Aion doesnt have 1 million sub, its probably around 250k or less.
Gonna have to agree with you on that, too many people are getting hung up on accounts, and what's actually active and playing.
Xfire is nowhere near an accurate representation of player activity.
I don't understand how you can preach about "what's active and actually playing" when you reference a piece of software that has been proven time and time again to be utterly useless in determining player activity, as your source of evidence.

Why does someone always bring up Xfire when its pretty obvisouly its not a good barometer of how many people play a game . Xfire is popular with a certain gaming demographic namely children . The majority of gamers either have never used it or even never even heard of it . Its always been a pretty daft thing to use in any debate about the numbers playing video games . By all means continue using it but a word to the wise it does make you look a bit silly because all it shows if RIFT doesn't appeal to the same demographic that use Xfire . I don't play RIFT myself but friends do and I've seen the servers are still very busy even after the drop off . Its a very popular game . Aion in comparison really isn't as popular . I would suggest you log in yourself under the free trial and see for yourself before making statements based on no real factual basis . I could be wrong but I'm guessing maybe your a WoW player ? Nornally when someone brings up Xfire like this its usually a WoW player and we all know theres a certain type of WoW player that feels threatened by the success of any other game than WoW and feels the need to troll it as much as they can in these forums just in case WoW suddenly loses subs thus invalidating thier choice of game .
Grats to Trion on their success. They deserve it. First mmo out of the gate and its polished, fun, has unique features and a loyal customer base. Couldnt ask for anything more, cheers.
There sure are a lot of negative comments about the sub numbers. Can't anyone be happy about them having over 1 million active subs without being a dick and attempting to claim ~ well such and such MMO doesn't have that many or this website {xfire, etc} says otherwise as if they know all or are equal, or lastly, "but are those really active accounts they're counting too" sheesh!
They claimed 2 million sales in total over the past 3 years, and 300k new players in July after the F2P move.
As for Rift, isn't that 1 million figure game sales? I know they announced 'close to a million' game sales a month or 2 ago, so I assume that this figure is related to that since the number of total game sales is accumulative.

This isn't entirely fair about XFire. While I agree that activity monitor tools like XFire, Raptr and Steam are inherently flawed in their use for overall statistics, they are still the best means around to get a sense of trend development and relative comparison of MMO's.
For example, published figures from companies like CCP about EVE and about WoW can be used to see how dependable such tools are, and if done so you'll see that trends observed in tools like XFire aren't that far off from reality.

Not that it matters but they don't define what they consider a "customer" is are these active subs, trials for example. Whether you believe the wow numbers or not blizzard do always say the numbers are "active" subs and do not include trial accounts.

What is this we? Sure some of the MMORPG community wants a DAoC game or are waiting with baited breath for GW2, doesn't mean that Rift is a bad game because it's not the type of MMO you want. Save you're money and look for something other than a themepark progression game. Or wait until this holiday season and see what Trion came up with for the solo 50s.
Regardless, I think it's pretty lame to damn a game with faint praise that had no intention of being what you were looking for in the first place.
A great example is that some people desperately want an Action MMO to come out. Personally I could care less about an action MMO, but I would never accuse a game of being awful or not inventive for doing something that's been done before. But then again I do research before jumpin into a game to make sure it's the type of playstyle I will like. I'm of course not implying the above quoted poster doesn't do such a thing. More of a general observation about the community.
Hey look this thread again. If I had to guess he meant 1.5million sold. This seems more reasonable considering the last we heard was they were approaching 1mil, so logic and all
If I had to guess (and yes I am hardcore Rift fanboi saying this). Sub numbers right now are at 500k+
Since its launch in April, LOTRO has quickly become the second largest MMORPG with an estimated 4 million characters calling Middle-earth their home.
I get what you're saying, but Trion didn't use the term characters. They also specifically said in the west.
I'm guessing the 4 million includes alts. It's quite possible that Rift is the second largest MMO in the west, what you posted doesn't really hold much water considering they are talking about 2007.
So that would mean Aion hadn't come out yet (which is probably why Trion said second largest in the west.)
For the people feeling the need to defend this game over and over shut up and go play it.
For the people feeling the need to argue that Rift sucks and doesnt have the numbers shut up and go play a game you do like...
I'm getting tired of you guys constantly bitching.

*hey I don't like this game compared to wow hm this game isnt original (because trion really really made the point of how original it was when announced /sarcasm) I guess i'm going to go on forums and post my hatred of this game all over the intawebs while frothing at the mouth*
DIE RIFT DIE ANY GAME THAT ISN'T WHAT I LIKE RAWWWWRRRRR! MY OPINION IS FACT AND EVERYONE KNOWS THAT ONLY XFIRE ACTIVITY SHOWS HOW MANY PPL PLAY A GAMEEE!
I've played Rift since release and i've still got tons to do and with the new chronicals content coming soon i'll be set. I haven't even touched raiding yet. My server is always highly populated and i'm always grouping up without any problems. To talk about this game dying etc is stupid and moronic. As another poster mentioned, how many people do you actually play with?if your in WoW you're usually with your 10/25ppl in an instance. How many of the millions of users do you ever see?
I guess if there is only 1mil wow subscribers (even though the game hasn't changed from what you might play right now) that you're going to quit? Even if Trion has less than 1mil (I wouldn't be surprised if it was 1 mil or close) Who cares?? If even 500000 people were subbed I'm never going to see 99% of them and if I enjoy the game why should I care?
I think its terribly sad that someone can be enjoying a game and then to have the mentality of *hmm well... i'm really liking this game but... it doesn't have 11mil subs it must be fail so i guess i'll quit*...
If you enjoy a game PLAY IT if you don't, what are you doing on forums posting about it for? There are tons of movies/games I really don't like. You won't see me raging/posting/trolling anywhere about it. I'll be in game enjoying my game. That game right now is Rift. I've pre ordered SWTOR and I can't wait for GW2. So I guess I should not play Rift because they are coming in x time?
Picture that x5. Even if Trion DID only have half the subscribers they are leading to believe. Isn't that a !$@$ton of people to be all playing a game together? All right rant over. I just hate this dumb topic and want some of you guys to get some perspective.
I agree with the above posts, it doesn't matter and I will add....
You guys realize that any of these, shall we call them 'press releases' have all been handcrafted by people wanting to 'advertise' their game - meaning that bias is built in. They utilize selective facts which crafted together sell the game.
You guys act like this is some investigative consumer protection journalism when it is simply an advertisement.
I too say, grow up people - this is not real information which can foster any real debate - it's a commercial.
And besides - how many games have to release before people start realizing that in todays mmo market - retention rate is going to be lower than in 1999 or 2001. For one, we've all seen it. VG, WAR, AoC, LotRO, STO, CO, the list goes on. It is fact - games are not retaining as many players after release as they did a decade ago. Second, it makes perfectly logical sense - you have more choices. What would I have quit EQ for- the other 2 games online? But I dropped STO like a bad habit - because there were sooooo many other games that were better.
On a personal level we may think 'this games sucks', but if you are looking at it from a multimillion person consumer base, you have to look at other 'facts'.
On that note, Rift did not retain as high a number as WoW did (I intentionally used 'did' instead of 'does' because, not one of you can prove what WoW's current retention level is). But Rift is certainly miles above other games released in recent years - compared to STO, CO, DCUO, WAR, AoC...., and those that can't see that without debating about how accurate the fansites are with their 'reporting', need to take off their tinfoil hats, and as said......
Go play a game that entertains you and stop debating a mountain of usesless 'facts'.
Rift currently has 60 non trial NA and Euro servers. During primetime a little more than half the servers are high or full the other half medium. EQ2 3-4 years ago had a pop of 200k with 16 total servers.
The rule of thumb before WoW used to be take a servers peak population and multiply by 5 (assuming 20% online at once) to see the servers population. With the MMO's become much more casual I would expect that likley only 10-15% of a servers population logs on during prime. Certainly that number will have gone down the last 7 years.
If one assumes the number is 15% one would multiply by 7. A Full Rift server holds 3500 players. Medium is 1500. Most servers during primetime will be a bit over 2k. Thats 14k pplayerbase per server x 60 servers. That would be roughly 840k and is a conservative estimate. If we move the the numner down to 10% which may or not be more likely then we would be at 1.2 million. If we used the old pre-WoW model of 20% we would be at 600k.
Either way they have quite a healthy player base. Depending on the math one uses one can believe their claim of 1 million present subs. Although no matter what math anyone uses they almost certainly did have over 1 million subs the first 2-3 months of release with 99 quite full servers.
People become deluded by WoW's numbers, Besides WoW and Eve no MMO has had over 200k western subs more than 2-3 months after release since WoW's release. EQ2 flirted with high release numbers but dropped quickly down to 100k before eventually growing again to the 200k figure a year or two after release. AoC and Warhammer were ghost towns a month after release. Everyone quickly left Aion.
Although SWTOR may or may not be the one game that changes those numbers. As like WoW they will be in a unique position to keep attracting new subs after release to possibly compensate for what they lose in subs.
I don´t know if they have a million subs atm...and i really don´t care.
What i know is that RIFT it is a suscess and i feel happy for Trion, they have done an amazing job with their first MMO and they keep delivering the best as fast as i´ve never seen any other company.
It says customers not active users, not to mention how many games have come out and said they were 1 of the top games before, oh about all of them. 1 million customers i can see, but not active users, i've been on them barren servers waiting on my sub to expire and i can tell you right now there isn't no were near 1 million active accounts with all the low population servers and it doesn't even take alot of people to get to high pop, around 1000 people makes a server high, what a joke.
"We are on the verge of selling our 1 millionth unit of Rift," he said in a phone interview. He stressed that the figure represents units sold to consumers, not shipped to retailers.
I dont know if rift have 1 milion players, i just know that I'll get my collector edition today !!
Then, count more 1 user in TRION account lol

Rift is pretty damn stable right now if you compare it to what we have seen before. I mean Aion or WAR you could see those server numbers just cliff dive after 1-4 months and you felt it if you played. I remember being on Kaisinel in Aion and feeling like it was literally just me and the AH was just dead and the forums were almost silent.
I find it hilarious that even with published articles and information internet trolls feel they have a better grasp of what's going on in a company, or in a game they don't even play. More than likely you've done no research on your own, and know absolutely nothing.

The game is successful. It's a themepark. Deal with it. And for the love of god stop citing X-Fire... it's a joke.
Would be great if the game wouldn't crash during every interaction for me.
