TOR looks rather boring... [video]

This video has just recently been put up by TotalBiscuit with fresh gameplay commentary from Gamescom '11.

Admittedly I haven't been paying too much attention to TOR's development (because after watching the first few bits of gameplay footage a while back, I was immediately turned off), but just watching this video makes me disappointed, not to mention drowsy from how dull everything seems.

It really just looks, in my opinion, like WoW in space, with clunkier character models.

The combat looks like the same stuff we've seen for years, except, I noticed, the enemies nor the players seem to be very active. Once they start combat, they sort of just stood there attacking until whatever foe they were set against fell dead. When an enemy is attacked, they don't really seem like they're being hit, either.

The UI looks clean, which is nice, but it's also not very pretty to look at, particularly the character portraits, which remind me of GI Joe action figures with angry, frozen expressions, as they stare blankly off into the blue void that appears to be enveloping them.

The outside environments are decent enough, but the interiors (particularly the ones that involve quests) look like basic branching corridors without very much detail or depth to them.

The only feature I did sort of like was the communication with NPCs, but even that isn't really new.

If you compare TOR to GW2 or Tera, I honestly don't understand why (outside of enjoying the Star Wars universe, of course) there is so much hype for this game. It looks like the same rehashed WoW clone formula we've seen in WAR and Rift.

Don't get me wrong, I really do hope the game is great, but from what I've seen here, I won't be having my hopes up.

I wanted to get some of The Pub's opinions on the video as well, and I wanted to discuss the potential of the "WoW model" (if you will) versus the newer, action/twitch based "GW2/Tera model" with this new batch of MMO's on the horizon. Which do you prefer and why?

it does look rather boring...but then, so does 99,999% of the current games, and that isnt stopping people from playing them.

SWToR's strong points will be the story driven gamelay, a ton of content at release, accessibility, and of course, the fact that is based on star wars.it probably IS WoW in space, but that doesnt necessarily have to be something bad...

GW2 looks more innovative and plain awesome, so I'll get that game too

TERA on the other hand...has fail written all over it, I was anticipating that game aswell, but everything you hear from it is how hard its crashing in korea, and now it seems like the western publishers want to wait for more patches to roll before releasing it...that speaks volumes about their lack of confidence in their own product.

yea.. i like kotor and i love star wars but after following this game for a while... its pretty obvious its just another over hyped release. its going to be just another wow with light sabers. the game will release, and the standard rants and disappointment threads will flood. same ole crap year after year, this game will be no different. fan bois can deny it to themselves all they want, they can flame, blah blah blah. in the end, it doesnt make a difference because this game will be exactly the same as the rest.

You've got a point. I have neglected to buy many games these days in that regard.

For as many fans there are of not only TOR but of Star Wars as a whole, I hope this game does do the property justice, and hopefully it steers clear of going the same road as WAR and Rift.

I have only seen a handful of videos on TERA; that's too bad, though. It certainly doesn't look as promising as GW2, but I had some hope for it.

If i had a nickle everytime someone says 'WOW clone' i would be a millionaire by now. People even call GW2 and Tera WOW clones because  players are so narrow minded these days that they pick up 2 or 3 features out of long list which resemble the most like traditional MMOS (not particularly WOW) and scream 'WOW CLONE'. All these MMOS including SWTOR have enough features to set it apart from WOW but who cares right? we will continue to use our tunnel vision.

EDIT:  Have you noticed how every GW2 fanboi trying to start TOR hate threads has this in his post

    Like what?

Outside of the speech options with NPCs, I didnt' really notice anything too interesting.

And it really does look like a WoW clone. :|

Like what? seriously i need to keep a copy paste list because people are too lazy to even go through the sticky on the very front page. So out of long list of features that SWTOR offer all you saw was one? speech options with npc's?

It reminds me of how in SWG they wen't with the CU (not talking NGE here folks!) to make the combat faster and more interesting.  To do that they had to lose some of the animations etc. which made a lot of people upset.

I think they are trying to make a game that as many people as possible can play.  Star Wars seemed to always be about fast conbat. . so in that case they are pretty off course.  Could most people play a game with combat at that pace though?

I would have to play it to know for sure.  Often things don't look as good as they play. . take Minecraft for example.

The same way you're entitled to make threads entitled "The TOR will dominate the market!", or something to that effect, is the same way people are entitled to make threads about how they're NOT whatsoever excited about the game. Stop being hypocritical.

On topic though, i made a link for the video: here

Additionally, the game looks more and more boring. The armor & clothing is uninspiring, and worse looking than how EQ2 looked when it first came out. Also, the combat looks so damned boring i wish I could cry tears just to keep my eyes from hurting so much :(.

    WTB: Real StarWars MMO......please :(?

Ikr, who cares what he thinks. Hes just another band-wagon rider, repeating the same post thats been done 500 times.

And besides, until recently WoW was an awesome game, so as long as TOR isnt cloning cataclysm, count me in :-)

My point was from the video I posted, nothing seemed too unique. Regardless of what some sticky said, I'm going to base more of my opinions from what I see from the actual game than some forum post.

Kotor looked pretty damn boring from a gameplay perspective, but that doesn't stop it from being one of my favourite RPGs of all time

TOR has 200 hours of story for every class. That's what makes it not-WOW. But how long will it take you to finish that? One month? Then what? You have what you see in that video. And yes I agree with OP.

A video which shows only one aspect of the game can not define the entire game. Your dislike for one feature doesn't make it a WOW clone. And that 'some' forum post holds all that SWTOR has to offer and info comes straight from Bioware itself.

Odd first vid of TOR that I've seen, that I thought didn't look bad. Older MMO's have two dudes swinging at each other like random with no reaction to one and another. Most MMO's today have a few dif auto attack animations to mix it up. Though TOR seemed to pick and choose its animations based off its target. It looks  a lot closer to real combat, then just random attacks. More so  then  anything else I've seen as of late.

While the graphics are pretty good, and the atmosphere looks amazing, the rest seems so bland. I mean, the voice acting is superb ofcourse, but the combat looks very 2004. I actually want something new for a change.

Clearly I can sway your perspective, nor do I want to try, but do respect my freedom to make a post on whatever I wish, regardless if the topic or my opinions bother you or not. If people like you are going to be populating TOR, then it's just one more reason not to play.

Bleh, all I can say is I am excited about GW2 and ToR. I m a star wars nut and I thought the first gw was pretty bad, so I guess if I could only pick one I would probably tgo with TOR, but man its a great world we live in. I can try both out!!!

I think ill go back to playing terraria now :-)

    Exactly.

Like I said, I do hope TOR does well, my point was that so far it doesn't seem that great to me.

Regardless, I hope they have a free trial or something similar so that I could at least give it a test drive.

I am respecting your freedom but that doesn't mean i can not comment if i find your opinion ludicrous . And feelings are mutual because i certainly do not want to play with indivduals who looks at one feature of game say combat in your case and scream 'WOW CLONE'. It is bad enough to go through these posts on forums. But wait you won't be in game so problem solved.

I could care less if you like or dislike the entire game it is the 'wow in space' comment i am talking about.

Seems fine to me. They are low level characters going through a low level area.

It's no more "boring" than any other mmo.

It's not touted as an fps game.

And it does not look like WoW in space. Not at all.

I think people buy into hype way to much and would advise them to actually play GW2 and Tera and SWToR before they make judtgments.

I remember seeing all the info for the original GW and I thought it look horrible. Which was not the case when playing it.

Also, I believe being in the driver's seat for a game is a completely different experience than watching a video of someone else playing.

I have no problem with WoW, Im just sick of the world, the classes and cataclysm's direction.  I like sci-fi, and star wars in particular far more than than I ever liked fantasy.  If i can get what wow offered me, plus bioware's traditionally great storytelling and voice acting quality on top of all that, well then great.

If I can go 6 years until im tired of ToR like I did WoW, well then, money well spent.

Also I would really like someone to make a solid definition of features that define WoW clone, but also do not pertain to any MMO that came before WoW (because wouldnt that make them clones of that game?), but Excluding level grinding.  I mean seriously, I did not enjoy spamming channels for an hour in North Ro or paludal caverns looking for camps to take me in and grind.

Look I know the sandbox fans hate WoW because it's success shifted the focus away from sandbox to themepark.  It's not WoW's fault, its not anyone's fault, it's just that the majority of people don't care for sandbox type games.  Heck, I wish some AAA company WOULD make a good sandbox.  I'd really like to try one out, I tried EvE, but couldnt really get into it, but I still recognize it as a very good game for what its trying to be.

Lastly, TOR's hype is no more over the top than the hype for GW2 on this site.  I mean, they are promising the sun, moon and all the stars for a one time price.  I just dont buy it.
