If i had a nickle everytime someone says 'WOW clone' i would be a millionaire by now. People even call GW2 and Tera WOW clones because players are so narrow minded these days that they pick up 2 or 3 features out of long list which resemble the most like traditional MMOS (not particularly WOW) and scream 'WOW CLONE'. All these MMOS including SWTOR have enough features to set it apart from WOW but who cares right? we will continue to use our tunnel vision.
Like what?
Outside of the speech options with NPCs, I didnt' really notice anything too interesting.
And it really does look like a WoW clone.
Like what? seriously i need to keep a copy paste list because people are too lazy to even go through the sticky on the very front page. So out of long list of features that SWTOR offer all you saw was one? speech options with npc's?
My point was from the video I posted, nothing seemed too unique. Regardless of what some sticky said, I'm going to base more of my opinions from what I see from the actual game than some forum post.
A video which shows only one aspect of the game can not define the entire game. Your dislike for one feature doesn't make it a WOW clone. And that 'some' forum post holds all that SWTOR is to offer and info comes straight from Bioware itself.
Only one aspect? That video showed the UI, character models and animations, environments, combat; a multitude of things that make up a big part of the core gameplay, and yet they all look (again, in my opinion) very dull and bland. And I'm sure I said I disliked more than just one feature.
Clearly I can sway your perspective, nor do I want to try, but do respect my freedom to make a post on whatever I wish, regardless if the topic or my opinions bother you or not. If people like you are going to be populating TOR, then it's just one more reason not to play.
I am respecting your freedom but that doesn't mean i can not comment if i find your opinion ludicrous . And feelings are mutual because i certainly do not want to play with indivduals who looks at one feature of game say combat in your case and scream 'WOW CLONE'. It is bad enough to go through these posts on forums. But wait you won't be in game so problem solved.
I could care less if you like or dislike the entire game it is the 'wow in space' comment i am talking about.
It looks like WoW in space to me. /shrug
I didn't mean to upset you or anything, let's just agree to disagree.
What are you most excited for that's coming in TOR, yourself? I'd like to hear.
Twitch-based of course. It's more immersive and just plain more "fun".
I am however looking forward to SWTOR with more... gusto, b/c 1. It's Star Wars 2. It's coming out in the near, forseeable future and 3. I'm burned out on fantasy and could use a good scifi, while the games out now or so terrible there isn't much I'd at least try out in order to break the monotony. I won't comment on it resembling the "WoW model" or being a wow clone, assumptions like that simply make me lose all respect for you and discount any opinion of value you might possess.
Coming from DAoC, I'll prefer something like GW2 or even Tera PvP-wise than TOR, but that will not be the main selling point for TOR, nor will the graphics or even the gameplay. It'll be the story, atmosphere, development, polish, and most importantly (as that's what really makes an MMO) the community that will drive the game forward. ...And honestly, if they add in player bounties eventually I can forgive them the PvP.
Folks that bash the game are obviously happy in what they're playing right now and can wait for the other next-gen mmo's to release. Honestly, if the secret world came out at the same time I might have to consider it - as it is, not even a little.
Lastly, TOR's hype is no more over the top than the hype for GW2 on this site. I mean, they are promising the sun, moon and all the stars for a one time price. I just dont buy it.
well every promise has been backed up nearly 100%. theres no need to buy it. theres already footage and peaople have alreay played the demos that prove what they have said. beleive what you want but, not "buying" what is proven is like not beliveing gravity exists
I won't comment on it resembling the "WoW model" or being a wow clone, assumptions like that simply make me lose all respect for you and discount any opinion of value you might possess.
Pretty standard MMO fodder. They patched in space flight is on rails after an uproar about the initial features released.
'Accessible to all players' could be translated as a lack of vision and implementation, meaning they cheesed out on doing anything new with this MMO. They reskinned every other theme park out there and spent all of the development money on the voice acting.
I would rather play SWG - much deeper, more immersive and as a player you can affect the world outside of hanging crap in an instanced spaceship 'home'
So, I see a lack of vision, kiddie clone wars graphics with polygon counts that were exciting 3 years ago and a lot of the features people screamed about have been duct taped to the side of it
They need the hype because hype makes people blind to what the game actually is while they run out to buy a $150 pre-order. It's like giving a car salesman the entire price of a car before seeing or test driving it.
I would think "accessable to all players" would mean, they dont want to shoot themselves in the foot by making the system requirements so high that they exclude a large portion of their potential player base. At the same time having varried enough gameplay that a wide audience would be able to find something to do.
But vision seems to mean that only a select few can enjoy it?

I have no problem with WoW, Im just sick of the world, the classes and cataclysm's direction. I like sci-fi, and star wars in particular far more than than I ever liked fantasy. If i can get what wow offered me, plus bioware's traditionally great storytelling and voice acting quality on top of all that, well then great.
If I can go 6 years until im tired of ToR like I did WoW, well then, money well spent.
Also I would really like someone to make a solid definition of features that define WoW clone, but also do not pertain to any MMO that came before WoW (because wouldnt that make them clones of that game?), but Excluding level grinding. I mean seriously, I did not enjoy spamming channels for an hour in North Ro or paludal caverns looking for camps to take me in and grind.
Look I know the sandbox fans hate WoW because it's success shifted the focus away from sandbox to themepark. It's not WoW's fault, its not anyone's fault, it's just that the majority of people don't care for sandbox type games. Heck, I wish some AAA company WOULD make a good sandbox. I'd really like to try one out, I tried EvE, but couldnt really get into it, but I still recognize it as a very good game for what its trying to be.
Lastly, TOR's hype is no more over the top than the hype for GW2 on this site. I mean, they are promising the sun, moon and all the stars for a one time price. I just dont buy it.
Couldn't agree more. The GW2 hype is over the top. Especially with the other days (arena/battleground) announcement...you would have thought they actually came up with something different.
Honestly, does everyone want twitch based combat for all of their MMO's? There's a reason many of us like to play MMO's and not shallow FPS games. You FPS fans your FPS MMO's will be out soon, so ripping TOR due to the lack of FPS "action" is pointless. Can't believe I've been driven to defend a WoW like game (as sick of WoW style games as I am) but FPS or twitch combat is the bigger irritant.
TOR has 200 hours of story for every class. That's what makes it not-WOW. But how long will it take you to finish that? One month? Then what?
maths to the rescue....
7 hour stints per day, 7 days a week, 4 weeks a month = 200 hours
x8 classes = 8 months
and thats just the story for each class, then you would have PvP, sidequests, crafting, dungeons and raids, some RPing if you are into that...etc
Im sure you will get plenty content patches or even a fully fledged expansion long before you are done with the whole game...
thats may not be a good thing. im not saying it is not a good thing either, but for a multiplayer game. story should not be something that is spotlit. and knowing Bioware, thay probably wont let their story take much of a backseat to aything. even so, we only have their word that the story will take 200 hours, and even then it does not say how much of that is just walking. for all we know the story elements could be 10 hours+ just getting and fidning things. and still we only have their word to trust here. and the real question is, if they wanted to tell a story .. maybe it might have been better if it was not a multiplayer game. since i dont see story + MMO mixing very well in the big picture. we can only wait and see for that tho.
This whole "WoW clone" thing doesn't convince me, to be honest. I've played dozens of tab-target & hotbar-style MMOs over the years and most of them play pretty differently from each other, despite the same basic mechanic. In fact I'd say there's probably more variety in how different tab-target & hotbar games play than in how different FPS games play, and I've played probably hundreds of those over the years.
As far as GW2 and TERA go, I can't see TERA living up to its promise (revolutionary games never do, sadly) and GW2 just doesn't interest me, although I might give it a go at some point when the box-price drops and I can be bothered.
I've been bored of the fantasy genre for years which is why I've mostly played superhero MMOs (all three of which, incidentally, play completely differently despite following this so-called "WoW model") and sci-fi MMOs.
It's a long time since I've expected much from any new games and I don't expect SWTOR to be some kind of messianic game (I didn't get that from WoW either though) but I've got it pre-ordered and even if I only get a month or so's fun out of it I'll be happy enough. Single player games rarely last that long anyway, and that's the yardstick I measure games by these days.
Odd first vid of TOR that I've seen, that I thought didn't look bad. Older MMO's have two dudes swinging at each other like random with no reaction to one and another. Most MMO's today have a few dif auto attack animations to mix it up. Though TOR seemed to pick and choose its animations based off its target. It looks a lot closer to real combat, then just random attacks. More so then anything else I've seen as of late.
Yeah, like the part where the Sith Warrior moves at a leisurely pace toward an enemy while getting shot from every direction by repeated blaster fire.

Reminds me of some srsly r33l combat, dood!
Lol.
Yeah I had noticed that as well. Though the sword fighting looks a lot better then anything I'v seen. You can parry blaster shots with your weapon too, if I understand that right. Though having no reaction to get shot is kinda silly I do agree.
I could be wrong here but at the start I saw on the mini map a "yellow road" does it means you just follow that to that area you are suppose to go to? if that's so then I would ask Bioware one question.

I can't bring myself to log in knowing it's going away
Oh look...another thread of GW2 fanboys trashing TOR. I truly wish GW2 would launch today so you people would give it a rest. You guys sure spend a lot of time giving opinions on a game you're not even interested in.

Do they think MMO gamers have Down Syndrome.
"accesible to most gamers" could also mean Farmvillers and others that think clicking is a video game.
Imagine if MS Office were given a farmville interface with little cows that run around making you click on things that get your work done.

<- not waiting for GW2 at all. Will check it out though. I'm looking forward to Tera, The Secret World, and WoD, yes, but you won't find me freaking out and buying anything before it's been out for a month.
Idk what is happening in the last few years, if I wanted an MMO to be a good story to follow I wouldnt play MMO's in the first place, i'd pick an RPG (the witcher series being my favorites).
Where are the old MMO's that you go in and you start swinging swords and lots of damage flying about where I can not give a toss about the storyline and and just see damage flying around with my new shinies and cool effects.
meh, 200hours of story gameplay, wouldnt touch the cinematics in an mmo with a 10ft pole
Even from that little bit of footage, I was already interested in what was going on. If you're not the kind of person who interests himself in storyline, you will not like this game, we've said that for ages.
And tbh, GW2 looks equally or more boring when killing mobs (link), although their boss fights look like a lot of fun. The only problem I have with TOR's combat, is that most the footage shown so far looks way too easy, they should buff the regular NPC damage imo.
TERA looks more active, but it's not like action gameplay doesn't become old either, dodging and doing barrel rolls actually annoys the living bejeezus out of me after a while in most action games I played, it's extremely repetitive.
People here seem solidly convinced of the belief that the old MMO model doesn't work or automatically translates to a bad and boring game.
I really see no indication of that anywhere.

Not to mention 17 planets worth of exploring at release.
I agree with some of the other comments
-- the video looks like wow in space BUT (big BUT) it is a newbie area
the newbie area video looks *more exciting* to me than the actual PVE gameplay in RIFT
(I know that doesnt say much heh)

Any game that uses a username and password can easily be classified as WoW clone based on general definition of the narrow minded MMO players.
How much WoW could a WoWhater hate, if a WoWhater could hate WoW?
As much WoW as a WoWhater would, if a WoWhater could hate WoW.
I could be wrong here but at the start I saw on the mini map a "yellow road" does it means you just follow that to that area you are suppose to go to? if that's so then I would ask Bioware one question.
