I agree pony, however, if you think that Star Wars is a super mature IP to begin with, you are fooling yourself. In fact, an argument could be easily made, that the IP is directed mainly at youth.
I doubt pony was or is under the impression that Star Wars is a mature ip Lucas is a well known panderer to children, let's be honest if he wasn't most of us would have no love for Star Wars to begin with let's remember most of us grew to love the ip as children. That doesn't change the fact that alot of people now would prefer to not be subjected to some of the more childish elements of the ip whether it's Star Wars Ewoks or WOW's panda's.
Pony can speak for itself. I never stated the maturity level would change facts. However, ponys' point was in reference to a maturity level.
To say that you don't want a game that is already brimming with immature content, to be even (self-percieved) less mature, is kinda like beating a dead horse.
Basically what people are saying is "Everything else in WoW is grown-up and mature content, but Pandas, how could they be so childish".
In other words, some people need to step outside their really narrow-minded POV, and realize that they are already playing a game aimed at youth.
Everyone has a preference per how mature or immature of a setting they prefer the games they play to be.
WoW use to be a much more serious and dark franchise. Yes, there were jokes and pop culture references here and there, but they were not the core of the game. The core of the Warcraft Trilogy was about the struggle between good and evil, it was dark, serious, with a a few light-hearted jokes to break the tension.
As WoW has progressed throguh the years, it has drifted away from it's more serious roots, getting less serious and more immature in both it's storyline and content. People have come to tolerate or accept some of these things, while others have left the game to not come back.
And MoP is just an extension of that, only it's an even greater leap. The previous expansions have all been centric around very serious storylines.
BC: Travelling to the remains of Draenor to fight back the Legion.
WotLK: Travelling to Northrend to defeat the Lich King and his undead army.
Cata: Fighting back againt Deathwing's reign of destruction.
All dark and serious.
Now we had MoP which is... Pandaren. The focus of the expansion is centric around a race that was once the punchline of not one, but two, April Fools jokes from Blizzard.
And that is why at least I am extremely turned off by the latest expansion. It just plain doesn't fit with the rest of the Warcraft lore which has always has dark and serious undertones, and replaced it with an infantile focus on Kung Foo Panda people.
TL;DR:
The lines of "too silly" varies for everyone. It doesn't matter that Warcraft has some light-hearted content, because it has always been countered by more mature, dark, and serious themes within the lore. Many people feel that MoP is deviating from that so much that it crosses the line into becoming too silly.
It's all a matter of opinion, and as much as you try to cop-out other people's opinions, it doesn't change that a lot of people think that the focus of the next expansion is ridiculous.
If you'll ask me not so speak for pony I'll go further and ask you not to speak for everyone else which you proceed to do immediately after informing me that pony can speak for himself (ironic isn't it?).
Where in any post until this page where the poster references sesamestreet.com does anyone speak of the maturity? People simply don't want to play as panda's from what I read some have even eluded that it may have to do with the fact that Blizz has a large asian market but I don't recall maturity being brought into the discussion until now.
Listen person. I did not speak for anyone but myself. I'm not sure if you know how to interpret english meaning very well, so I will let it slide.
Why are you offended when I ask you not to speak for another poster? I wasn't talking to you earlier, but hey you decided to interject some nonsense.
And yes, most of this rant that people are going on about is directly aimed at the (percieved) maturity level of the introductions of pandas. Are you really blind to that fact, or do you just read sentences that you can argue with?

Not really, ... more like "sillyness level".
I agree that silly things are often the same as "chidish" things but that is not what I meant. Despite WOW's cartoony graphics, gnomes and flying mounts, it always felt serious and real enough to me. (Give or take a certain quest which made you follow a dog and sort through its feces to find a ring I think it was, lolz). I left before the pet shop though.
I regard Star Wars as a serious enough IP too. Actually a hugely serious one. That's why Gungans stand out so much: I think they are very silly and a failed attempt at comedy relief.
When you look at IP's the scope of SW or to a lesser extent, Warcraft, you're bound to find aspects which don't "fit" the rest of the IP so much. To me, Panda's are more silly and a mile apart from trolls, goblins, tauren, etc. But like I said: that may be personal.

I agree that "too silly" is relative to each persons' opinion. I certainly don't need objective and subjective explained.
I have followed WoW the same as anyone from vanilla. WoW was never really serious IMO. Some may have interpreted it as that, but again, all opinion. Has WoW gotten easier? By leaps and bounds.
As far as copping out on others opinions. What? Are you serious? You give an opinion, but I can't? Really?
Let's hear it for sticking to lore and stagnation...who needs progress? And we SURE as hell don't need any light-heartedness in our games, no sir, super serious all the way.
That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!
I really loved Kung Fu Panda I'll admit. But I still couldn't play a "Panda" without imagining some of the goofier parts of the fight scene. Like where Panda "butt smashes" the cat's face as they tumble down the stairs. I mean part of the endearing nature of the character is that he was a clutz.
So now this guy is going to try and spew this nonsense that; "Pandas are Serious" What is he smoking? (And NO I don't want any... I don't even want to speculate where it came from...)

There's a difference between giving your opinion, and stating that other people's opinions are flat-out wrong.
For example, I personally feel that Pandaren as the focus of the expansion is ridiculous and demeaning to the Warcraft dranchise. I don't however feel that other people who do like it are incorrect for feeling that way, they're perfectly within their right to
I do however have a problem with the people who's only retort to the criticisms against MoP, is through attacking of people's opinions. Either stating they're unreasonable beecause WoW has always had a silly streak, or they're just "haters" so their criticism isn't valid, etc.
A lot of people simply don't like the idea of a kung-foo panda people centric expansion for WoW, because they think it's too silly. The specifics don't matter, because that's their opinion. No amount of accusation and rationalization to try to deflect these opinions is going to change the fact that a lot of people simply don't like the announced expansion.
You really can't use a panda as a april fools joke TWICE and then expect people to take them seriously. WOW Kiddies just took on a whole new meaning. You just can't take a game that was overall very serious and throw cuddly pandas into the mix. It'd be like EQ2 adding a fluffy pink bunny class that throws eggs at mobs, or EVE online adding marvin the martian as a playable race. This whole thing is a joke and not in a funny way, blizzard just made themselves a laughing stock.
I'm glad some people think this is cool, but i think the majority are thinking this is a flipping stupid mistake. Blizzards target audience is obviously no longer me. And frankly i'm fine with that as I don't think i ever would have gone back to wow again anyhow this just cements it.

I remember reading so many posts about how people hope they add Pandas into the game when we first got word of MoP being copyrighted. Now all of those people seemed to have stop posting? My thoughts they are content, and happy as can be and enjoying WoW, or some other games for the time being.
People will leave, people will stay, and people with come... it sounds fine to me. Heck I have a friend that is subscribing for the sole purpose of Pet battles! So yah, seems ok to me...
When I played WoW, it was barely enough to explain to wife or friends that it was a very good combat & team strategy game set in a war-torn, Tolken-esque, fantasy world.
I'm trying to picture myself making that same argument while my 8 year old says how much she loves the super cute panda on the screen. Not happening. I would now be ashamed to play this expansion.
There's an argument in this thread that past references to cute pandas in the WoW universe makes this all okay, and dismisses any concerns about removing the last bit of seriousness in WoW. Fine, enjoy the fish, squirrel, and bunny races. Have the time of your life playing the cow race with its awesome grass-chewing combat style.
There's a position in this forum that WoW has always had a light and silly side, and that's true. But it was never the centerpiece, front and center. It was always a side show, never intrusive, and easily ignored. I cannot have a super cute panda dancing on my screen.
Companies make mistakes. Even great companies make mistakes. That Chris Metzen had to make a statement to convince people this was not utterly silly nonsense should be a very big red flag to Blizzard, and certainly supports the outcry in these forums.
I have had a great time in WoW. Best game ever. But it's struggling to offer anything new (go play an Ki energy, dark or light, monk on DDO - been available a long time). Pokemon Pet Combat & a Kung Fu Panda cartoon world is an awful response to decling subscriptions. Super cute pandas are no answer to Rift, SWTOR, Guild Wars 2, or Secret World.
It's hard to let go of something you've become emotionally attached to, or have invested so much time in. We all have different points where enough is enough, where silly and ridiculous and humiliation becomes unbearable, and it seems like super cute pandas is a that point for people.
I really liked WoW, and will always think well of it, and hope those that stay have that same fun.

I have never said anyones' opinions is wrong. How could I? It is just an opinion after all (not wrong or right).
Your "problems with people" do not include me. I have not "attacked" any opinion. In fact, I agreed with pony saying "Just because you can do it, does not mean you should". Perhaps you did not read that part.
Again I repeat IMO, this debate is mostly over perceived maturity level of the xpac, and that "maturity" seems to be relative to each persons' opinion.
So please, while you disdain people attacking, perhaps you should step back, and not attack me.

you are humiliated by a video game and you think the game is the problem?
I understand your point, but couldn't agree less. First, they don't look cute to me at all. They never have, well, except the mini-pet I suppose, but even the wow-age april fools joke wasn't cute. Commercialized maybe but not cute. Regardless they are even less cute now then they were then. Second .. this really is nothing new. There's a racoon race already. I have a hard time understanding how pandas are what is killing wow for so many people when space goats were somehow acceptable. Those hideous blue things are far worse than pandas and were even more a complete stretch of the lore with their naruu powered flying crystal ship.
To each his own I guess, but all I see is a bunch of burned out wow players looking for a reason to hate.
Besides, there are much better things to be worried about because .. while there are some scenarios and things we know nothing about .. it looks like just more of the same .. which is what worries me. I guess between swtor and this expansion i'll get about 4 months of play time before im back to being bored to tears with this genre.
LFD tools are great for cramming people into content, but quality > quantity. I am, usually on the sandbox .. more "hardcore" side of things, but I also do just want to have fun. So lighten up already

You basically stated that the opinion of people who dislike Pandaren is invalid because WoW is already an immature game.
I've seen this posted several times, but I'll post it here again since it's so true.
Cow-people (tauren)? Fine.
Boar-people (razor-fens)? No problem.
Snake-people (naga)? Nifty.
Demon-goat people (satyr)? Neat.
Deer-people (centaur)? Peachy.
Bird-people (rocs)? Cool.
Wolf-people (worgen)? Super-cool.
Space-goat people (draenei)? Sexy.
Panda people (pandaren)? OMGWTF IZ THIS NONSENSE BLIZZ!?
I don't understand this at all. Why are people flipping their s**t because of this?
I'd say it has a lot to do with the Kung Fu Panda films (even though the Pandaren lore predates those films I think), and the fact that that people believe them to be childish.
Either way, it looks like this is going to be a very polarizing expansion, but it's never a good thing when Blizzard employees have to go on record saying their brand new expansion pack is "not a joke."
Comments
Um...YES?
I think I actually spent way more time reading and theorycrafting about MMOs than playing them
It''s not a joke anymore because people's jobs are on the line now lol............

I've seen this posted several times, but I'll post it here again since it's so true.
Cow-people (tauren)? Fine.
Boar-people (razor-fens)? No problem.
Snake-people (naga)? Nifty.
Demon-goat people (satyr)? Neat.
Deer-people (centaur)? Peachy.
Bird-people (rocs)? Cool.
Wolf-people (worgen)? Super-cool.
Space-goat people (draenei)? Sexy.
Panda people (pandaren)? OMGWTF IZ THIS NONSENSE BLIZZ!?
I don't understand this at all. Why are people flipping their s**t because of this?
You basically stated that the opinion of people who dislike Pandaren is invalid because WoW is already an immature game.
Gonna be the best expansion yet.
