Hellgate: London. No question, the worst launch in history.
Hmm, might technically violate the "still active". It's just being run by a different company now. Does that count?

EVE? I guess tastes differ cause I liked it. It frustrates the heck out of me and makes me bad to be around in real life but I like the game(don't play it anymore - I like my current set of friends).
You guys are posting some games that are showing hate or bias, none of those gasmes would be considered a worst of,,cmon now lets be serious.
A game i actually played recently really is very bad ,i think it was called Aika, everything about it was just awful,i struggled minute by minute to stay logged into the game until finally after about 2 hours i gave up and deleted it.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
I've been playing MMORPGs since 1997. I've played...a bunch of games in that period of time. There are games that I played for an extended period of time. Games that became part of a rotation of games over the years. Games that I only did betas for and walked away. Games I did trials for and walked away. Heck, there was even a game that I cancelled the download of the trial because it was simply taking far too long to complete.
I tend to be very critical. Even of games that I enjoy and play until my eyes bleed, I've never been accused of being a fanboi of any game. I've been accused of hating every game and hating people in general, but I've never been accused of being a fanboi of any game. I tend to be very critical.
There are features of games others have hated, that I have enjoyed. There are features of games others have enjoyed, that I have hated. I do not always go with the crowd...but I do not necessarily just go against the crowd to go against the crowd. I'm opinionated, no doubt - and I can be pretty stubborn - but I try to listen. Even somebody that I think is wasting oxygen on our planet, might have something interesting to say . . . and if I'm too buys mocking them for taking up space, I would miss that.
That being said...the worst MMO/MMORPG I've ever played would have to be Champions Online.
I've played buggy games that barely worked...and they were still better than Champions Online.
I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

Worst and best are opinions. People have listed games I love. In the last best game thread people listed games I hated. Everyone has an opinion on what is good and bad. There are people who love Mortal Online, I played a day and a half and regretted playing that long. this is just supposed to be a fun thread where people get to state their opinions. No need to defend games really, just cause you worship it doesn't mean everyone does. And.. Games change. I loved LOTRO until they totally nerfed it. I know Age of Conan failed at launch but since then it has become a game worth trying.
Aside from a myriad of extremely crappy F2P titles I've tried:
WAR -- The game's poor PvE was a real issue to me.
AoC -- Pretty graphics do not a good game make. The game is a nice graphical showpiece to show off your new video card, but aside from that it's awful. The game has a very lifeless, "plastic-y" feel, the animations are pretty bad, the questing is aimless, the zones are incredibly small, and the combat is nothing but a click fest.
FFXIV -- I like how SE is so devoted to improving this game, but right now's it's just a shell of a playable title. The game has some amazing graphics, but the environments are incredibly repetitive, and there's just no point to doing anything. Plus there's the whole market ward stupidity which is a prime example of the mistake of doing something different just to be different.
Mortal Online -- Some good ideas here, but the dev team lacks the talent/funds to get the job done. As it stands now, it's just a cheap money grab. Don't waste your time.
Darkfall Online -- Basically UO invisioned by reds. As a result, you have UO minus everything that made the game great except for player killing. The game has lots and lots of player killing.
I'd have to say Vanguard. I tried for a solid month to find something, anything, I liked to do in that game to no avail. I don't think I've experienced more bugs in a single play-through in any game. I'd get stuck on just about everything I touched be it a railing, shrub or even a gravestone. Graphical glitches, animation glitches, quest stopping bugs etc..
You name it, it happened. I remember reading a blog not long after it's release from a "dev", (quotes because I don't usually buy into those unless it's proven), in that blog it was stated the game was purposefully sabotaged due to what was going on behind the scenes ( the soe takeover) needless to say it didn't seem far from the truth.
The other would be Dark and Light, tried it at a friends house, my god was that game terrible.

DDO (Dungeons and Dragons Online) and CO (Champions Online) were HUGE disappointments to me. Nothing like the PnP games they were touted to be. Never even made it through the free month of play with game purchase.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse. - FARGIN_WAR
The worst MMO I've played was that 2029 Online, about 8 months ago I decided to try the MMO's on game list in order, played that...it was so horrible...I just didn't even want to continue down the list. It literally plays itself, so I accepted a quest and started looking at my characters skills, next thing I know I finished the quest...my character moved all the way to where the quest mob was and killed all the mobs. However the forums says the game is closed recently...so...
Eve is one of the few games I was bored with, but kept playing just because people say you have to play it a while before it gets fun, did the trial and...well I'm never doing that again, I shouldn't have to find the entertainment in a piece of entertainment...I already do that in real life.
Vanguard was pretty bad also, maybe that's the worst active MMO, because at least in Eve I remember having fun trying to destroy a asteroid base thing...nothing was fun in Vanguard at all. Also, I didn't experience any bugs in Eve, while I experienced tons in Vanguard.
"Great minds talk about ideas, average minds talk about events, and small minds talk about people." - Eleanor Roosevelt "Americans used to roar like lions for liberty; now we bleat like sheep for security." -Norman Vincent Peale
Surprised to see so much hate for Vanguard. It sucks to play it now because the low population really restricts what you can do, but I've always seen Vanguard as something that could have been amazing if not for the game's terrible launch and vast array of bugs.
Yeah, I thought Vanguard had potential but just awfully realised. If it went F2P I'd almost certainly give it another go.
Worst MMO I've played, though? I'll discount the numerous Asian grinders I've tried because those go without saying. There's also a few that aren't active anymore which aren't allowed (Auto Assault, Tabula Rasa, Hellgate).
I didn't last long in WoW but that was the community more than anything so I'll discount that one too.
I guess it'll have to be Eve. I love the idea of it and I keep giving it chances but, man, that's a whole lot of doing nothing. I know it's probably awesome if you're in a big corp and doing the 0.0 thing, but I've got other games I'd rather play if I'm going to be tied into that kind of setup. WW2OL for example - I had to quit that because it sucked all my time away. It's way too awesome once you get your head around it.
I would have to say, without a doubt, the worst game I have played is World of Warcraft. I have to admit it, the game seduced me for a good 18 months before I realised the power it had over me. When I was playing for hours on end repeating the same dungeons over and over again to obtain the simplest set of armour with no results what-so-ever I knew I was in trouble.
For over a year I tried to obtain a hat for my warlock and a chest for my druid. Only once did I find the hat and regretfully a wizard...or whatever they are called, rolled for the same item and won. Not too long after this the expansion came out. As I read that, to get upraded armour, I had to have the whole set of the prior armour and then go on quests to kill hundreds of the same mob over and over and over again.
I saw the trap that Blizzard had weaved for us all. I saw that these special items were only a psychological device to make people stay and play due to the wasted hours, days, months and years it took to find them. No-one wants to admit they are an idiot, but I did and swiftly moved onto a far better game. This was a game I never payed a cent for other than to buy the title. I never looked back. I still play it to this day. I can not wait for it's successor to come out. It is the way MMOs should have always been.
Personally, I think Rift could have been something had it been released in '06-'07. But in 2011, it would seem that a lot of gamers within this genre have simply had enough of the same old bullshit. As polished as it launched, and with all of the commonly requested features and mechanics of a modern theme park mmo included, it just didn't bring in and maintain the masses as Trion (and it's many followers) had hoped. This game should really serve as warning to the studios that develop mmos: do not try to beat the king at it's own game. Aint gonna happen.
P.S. If it hadn't been for STO's half decent space combat, I would have chosen that title. After enjoying a fair bit of time with CoX, I honestly expected much more from Cryptic. What an embarrassing joke of an mmorpg.

On that list of non-active bad games, you have Auto Assault? Really? To me, the game was a blast. It did not take long into the beta to go ahead and do the pre-order for the CE version. It had a great beta. The launch - it was definitely a case of asking, "Is anybody there?" because the servers were so empty... too many servers, not enough marketing, and the problem that EVE has suffered from - vehicular avatar.
I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?
what gets me about the amount of people on these discussion boards who consider themselves MMO addicts and officianados on what is the best game ever, you all seem to base a game on a few hours play. and i see the same people posting the same rubbish that is spouted about games by game haters.
my opinion based on proper things
worst game community - WoW, hands down no contest, advice get in a guild turn off general chat
worst game still active- now this could be argued for days, but for me it's a hard decision so i'll go with a couple that truly i thought were aweful
1 FFIV- awful engine, bad community, looked pretty though
2 Guildwars, granted i havent played since GW vanilla, but that game really was a shallow, just couldnt get into it.
3 and after cataclysm wow, until that point, wow was ok, kept me entertained for a few years, but everything in wow is now rinse and repeat, even down to the mobs, it's a phat lewts grind fest at the top with no feeling, wow is the mmo worlds version of the iphone, well marketed.
and to get a feel for what i feel are better IMO and playing
Champions, it took a few years but it's now a great game
Rift, take lots of things from other games and does it better, for a game that is not even a year old, it is being expanded constantly and faster than most i've played.
city of heroes, massive game, so much fun, even 6 years of subs down the line i'm still finding missions i haven't done yet.
and finally Lotro, highly true to the lore (90% of the time), good community beautifuk game.
all four im playing, i also sub the f2p games listed
games i'm looking forward to, TSW, SWTor.
the only thing killing MMO's is players that blast there way through content and complain theres nothing to do.
