Wow, toss up between MO and Xsyon. I actually cast my vote to Xsyon. At least there is something to do in MO. Xsyon is just one big empty world with nothing to do...

Did not include D&L as I don't consider that a game but a cash-grab scam!!!
A man is his own easiest dupe, for what he wishes to be true he generally believes to be true...
Easily FF14 for me. I freely admit to not having played a great many MMOs. I began my MMO career in 2004 and have mostly enjoyed the few games I've played. Until recently, I haven't had a reason to even want to try numerous other games.
Aside from the gorgeous graphics and the *potential* of its crafting system, it's hard for me to name anything that was remotely enjoyable about FF14.
I bought this game thinking it would be a better version of Darkfall...and boy was I wrong lol. It was basically like a game that was not even half developed.
Ouch, should have tried the open beta :P. MO would have to be my third worst experience, with the first still being vanguard simply because it wasn't exactly an indie project. I'm just glad I'm not seeing a whole lot of people mentioning Dark & light which means not a whole lot of people were taken for that scam.
Yeah I definitely should have. MO was my dumbass moment. I was completely blinded by the hype and my own desire for another UO that I wasn't thinking. Oh well...you live you learn .
Talk about taking a fabulous, world-wide known IP, and making it an unrecognizable abomination on what Star Trek is. Absolute waste of huge potential. And because of STO, there's absolutely no chance of someone making a better Star Trek MMORPG while this piece of trash is still around.
A brighter future for Star Trek MMORPG gaming has been sentenced to 10 years in prison with no chance of parole.
"I have only two out of my company and 20 out of some other company. We need support, but it is almost suicide to try to get it here as we are swept by machine gun fire and a constant barrage is on us. I have no one on my left and only a few on my right. I will hold." (First Lieutenant Clifton B. Cates, US Marine Corps, Soissons, 19 July 1918)
Yeah, I thought Vanguard had potential but just awfully realised. If it went F2P I'd almost certainly give it another go.
Worst MMO I've played, though? I'll discount the numerous Asian grinders I've tried because those go without saying. There's also a few that aren't active anymore which aren't allowed (Auto Assault, Tabula Rasa, Hellgate).
I didn't last long in WoW but that was the community more than anything so I'll discount that one too.
I guess it'll have to be Eve. I love the idea of it and I keep giving it chances but, man, that's a whole lot of doing nothing. I know it's probably awesome if you're in a big corp and doing the 0.0 thing, but I've got other games I'd rather play if I'm going to be tied into that kind of setup. WW2OL for example - I had to quit that because it sucked all my time away. It's way too awesome once you get your head around it.
On that list of non-active bad games, you have Auto Assault? Really? To me, the game was a blast. It did not take long into the beta to go ahead and do the pre-order for the CE version. It had a great beta. The launch - it was definitely a case of asking, "Is anybody there?" because the servers were so empty... too many servers, not enough marketing, and the problem that EVE has suffered from - vehicular avatar.
Yeah, Auto Assault never did it for me. I was in the beta and gave it a go after launch to give it a proper chance (I really wanted to like it) but it never stopped feeling like a minigame. It would've been much, much better if you could get out of your car and go on foot, in a standard third-person view. There were so many times when I was fighting pedestrians and wanted to do that, or when my car was battered and I wanted to get out and make a last ditch defence with a bloody great big rocket launcher.
I guess I wanted it to be the MMO of the ancient Car Wars game from Steve Jackson Games, but it wasn't.
Worst MMO I've ever played is Mortal Online. Not because of the ideas in place, but because of the execution of those ideas.
Agreed. I've been playing MMOs since UO's release in '97 and I always follow sandbox MMOs, especially those that are influenced by the UO of yesteryear.
I was a heavy Mortal Online follower, even when they never gave us much to go on, and was heavily involved in the forums as well as Aegis Imperium, one of their better pre-launch guilds. That being said, the moment I installed Mortal Online and troubleshot the 100 problems my computer faced with getting it to work (as everyone did due to a terrible dev team) ... I was already disappointed. Severly disappointed. The character creation system was horrible. The graphics ... don't even get me started. Compared to what their original videos/teasters promised? Laughable. And then ... the game play ... wow. You talk about a game that felt like it was one of the first 3D releases in existence. My memories of EQ looked better. My memories of Birthright: Gorgons Alliance looked better. This game not only looked horrible, it played horrible.
I won't go as far to say that Mortal Online was a majorly published MMORPG - it wasn't. It was mid-to-above tier. Decently funded but by no means a major title like SWTOR, TERA, etc. But definitely not F2P garbage. They had a good bunch of millions invested. The rookie dev team just had no idea how to pull it off. And what they pulled off was an embarassment of unplayability and ugliness.
Horrible graphics. Horrible game play. Massive let down. Darkfall looked like a goddess when put next to MO - and Darkfall had a huge slew of problems.
So Mortal Online gets my vote. Good ideas and intentions do not translate into good games. I have plenty of good ideas - yet I have no means, nor want, to ever try and implement them into a video game because I would be utterly destroyed. If you don't have the talent, put your ideas in the back seat with the rest of the countless trillions people have thrown back there for the ride.
Talk about taking a fabulous, world-wide known IP, and making it an unrecognizable abomination on what Star Trek is. Absolute waste of huge potential. And because of STO, there's absolutely no chance of someone making a better Star Trek MMORPG while this piece of trash is still around.

I couldn't have said it better myself. The potential for an online Star Trek game was HUGE and what we got was complete and utter garbage, IMO.
what gets me about the amount of people on these discussion boards who consider themselves MMO addicts and officianados on what is the best game ever, you all seem to base a game on a few hours play. and i see the same people posting the same rubbish that is spouted about games by game haters.
my opinion based on proper things
worst game community - WoW, hands down no contest, advice get in a guild turn off general chat
worst game still active- now this could be argued for days, but for me it's a hard decision so i'll go with a couple that truly i thought were aweful
1 FFIV- awful engine, bad community, looked pretty though
2 Guildwars, granted i havent played since GW vanilla, but that game really was a shallow, just couldnt get into it.
3 and after cataclysm wow, until that point, wow was ok, kept me entertained for a few years, but everything in wow is now rinse and repeat, even down to the mobs, it's a phat lewts grind fest at the top with no feeling, wow is the mmo worlds version of the iphone, well marketed.
and to get a feel for what i feel are better IMO and playing
Champions, it took a few years but it's now a great game
Rift, take lots of things from other games and does it better, for a game that is not even a year old, it is being expanded constantly and faster than most i've played.
city of heroes, massive game, so much fun, even 6 years of subs down the line i'm still finding missions i haven't done yet.
and finally Lotro, highly true to the lore (90% of the time), good community beautifuk game.
all four im playing, i also sub the f2p games listed
games i'm looking forward to, TSW, SWTor.
the only thing killing MMO's is players that blast there way through content and complain theres nothing to do.
I'm with you on Champions. I was there at launch and really, really perservered with it, but after four months I conceded defeat. I went back about six months later and it was marginally better but it still didn't grab me. Then I played DCUO and loved it for about two weeks, and then just got bored of the repetitive shallowness of it that all the polish couldn't make up for.
I ended up loading CO again just to get whatever I could from it and I couldn't believe how much it's improved. I've only played as a Gold player since F2P so I can't comment on the Silver player experience, but it really has come on. I do have a few niggles about the cash shop thing, I think they could probably do with dropping a few more freebies on the players rather than charging for everything, but I guess that's the nature of the beast. And I'll say this for Cryptic - whatever the popular consensus is about them being rubbish and evil, from what I've seen over the past 6 or 8 months they've turned themselves round to be the most communicative, responsive and in-the-community dev teams out there. They screwed up CO's launch and made a mess of STO (I kinda liked it for what it was, but I'm pretty much the opposite of a Trekkie), but they get kudos from me for how they've turned themselves round.
I like LOTRO too (haven't played for a year though), I thought it did well with balancing Tolkien's world with the requirements of an MMO. I also loved my kinship (still do, Blades of Arnor on Snowbourn - love you guys!). The main reason I quit is because it was taking up more time than I could commit to it, and I couldn't commit to it as much as I wanted to. I just don't have the lifestyle for hardcore gaming anymore.
Easily FF14 for me. I freely admit to not having played a great many MMOs. I began my MMO career in 2004 and have mostly enjoyed the few games I've played. Until recently, I haven't had a reason to even want to try numerous other games.

I almost forgot this one, or rather tried to forget about it. It was, and still is, such a horrible waste of a great IP that I almost want to cry when I think about it.
Anarchy Online was my first MMO that really made me regret the purchase. Run around all night just to get to a cave mission and then get stuck under bridges and have to relog just to get over the bridge. So many glitches, and so much time sink built in, I was not impressed.
I tried a month of Asheron's Call 2 and Vanguard but they were so barren, I felt like I was playing a single person game and not an MMO.
I have seen several best game threads.. what is the worst you have actually played?
For me: it was WoW.. not because of the actual game but because of the community. My opinion folks not bashing the game, many like it - I do not.
What was your worst MMO played?
i know its your opinion but the part in red should be corrected actually.... the community didnt make the game bad. The community probably made your experience in the game bad (no reason to say a game is bad).... WoW is by far the best mmorpg i have played and i have played over 30 mmorpgs old and new....
just wanted to point out that the community doesnt make a game bad or good.... only your experience (im answering according to the title of the thread and the part of your comment in red color)
the worst games for me can be any game that has no in depth lore, no WASD movement, no variation in class / race, and grind progression (spam skill to kill tons of mobs to gain exp, like dungeon crawlers).... put all this together and you have my worst MMORPG ever...
Talk about taking a fabulous, world-wide known IP, and making it an unrecognizable abomination on what Star Trek is. Absolute waste of huge potential. And because of STO, there's absolutely no chance of someone making a better Star Trek MMORPG while this piece of trash is still around.

Glad to remind you of it!
What makes it even more funny is that despite possessing the name of a world-class IP, the game is essentially forgotten. Except by us that like to rant about it. The only good thing about STO is cancelling one's subscription.

Your last part there kind of confuses me. In the first paragraph, you stated that you wanted to get out of your car. The single sentence there says you wanted it to be Car Wars. You did not get out of your car in Car Wars. No doubt, the setting and story were off - but not being able to get out of the car would not have been it.
Still kills me that I lost all my CW stuff. Have looked around some of Scibd, other sites, just to be able to read some of the old ADQ articles and all the rest.
Lol, I had a funny idea the other day in reading an article about Garriott - which made me think about the work he and Chuckles did with Autoduel. I wondered if he could work things out with Steve to make a new Autoduel with his Portalarium endeavor.
I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?
Not sure an exact worst but here are a few that I were the most "not for me".
Perfect World
WoW
The worst MMO still active is Warhammer Online T4 PvP. Clarifying I love Warhammer from T1-T3, it is a fun game. I only mean T4, the end game, utter crud.
