It's not just you. It is unacceptable for a company like Bethesda to have such a serious problem in which they don't seem to have done anything to make it better for PC users.

That said, I plugged in my Xbox controller and am playing it, and it's totally fine. A mistake like that shouldn't stop you from playing the game with a controller and loving every second of it. I think it might be as good as Morrowind otherwise.

A modder just posted that they're working on a new UI reminecent of Oblivion.  It'll prolly be a week or more before its done, and I'm sure there are probably others working on some unannounced ones too!

I give it a month or three after the construction kit it released before we start seeing some truely great UI mods, but if this modder can pull it off without, then all the more power to them...  And yes, Bethesda sucks that they gave we PC gamers such a shoddy UI, but we all know they did it on purpose knowing full well the modding community would make it better for free!

So as a PC user, do you think it is worth it to get?  I am ready to purchase this one, it sounds very immersive and a blast to experience.  However, I'm not going to purchase it if the UI is really that bad for PC users.

One of the best gaming experince i had in a very long time. Sadly, Skyrim is more immersive than any MMO currently on market. This is the only CE edition i will never regret.

Its not that bad, Its very much playable they just didnt design it for the PC players...

My personal bug with the UI is the same as fallout's engine, No hotkey fast swiching for wepons...Wana go from a Melee weapon to Bow? Have to navigate some windows! same for spells and such. Would be much nicer to switch on the fly during encounters...

Although im having an excelent time playing it, I can see where your coming from..Im 100 hours in and Its becoming very black and white where you are assigned to clear a dungeon/area, Collect/kill your objective, Return.

But on the game as a whole it is truly great, It signifies the milestone in technology where Things that were once impossible are now possible.(ill use the random dragon attacks as an example)

Game is released on Nov 11th and you have 100 hours in?

You can assign favorites then assign keys 1-8 for fast swapping weapons or spells.  I do think eight options is too few though.  I have my 1h assigned to 1, shield to 2, bow to 3, self heal 4, heal other 5, dmg spell 6, aoe dmg 7, ward 8.  I suppose it comes down to playstyel whether 8 is enough or not, but I find myself swapping 7 and 8 quite often.

it has been posted elsewhere (and maybe somewhere in this mess of a thread)...you can indeed assign hotkeys to weapons/spells. there is no explanation for it, but like former bethesda titles, you have to look around a little. simply designate your favorite bow, mace, restoration spell, whatever to favorites: then with the favorites menu open and the particular weapon highlighted, hit a number key. now you can switch from bow to sword without even pausing the game!

is the game ideally optimized for the pc? oh god, no. but there is a solution for many of the issues if you do a little investigation and exploring...much like the game world itself :)

Thing is, in EVERY game I have ever played or have seen played end up like this over time.. Every game has an established routine as to what can be done and depending on a number of factors it may or may not bother the player.. I once played 15 seasons of Madden in franchise mode.. I know it's sports but hear me out.. Not much changed if anything at all through all that time.. I mean, it was an all rookie league with the only veteran presence being coaches, but the core game and mechanics were all the same.. Even all the same commentary, cut scenes, presentation, etc.. But it never got old to me..

If you are getting bored with Skyrim, then you may not be looking through the same glass as the developers or other players..

Some players may choose to live the rest of their lives doing daily jobs as a companion, even if they may repeat themselves..

After thumbing the web some time before Skyrim, there is a contingent of players who are still adventuring in Morrowind with over 300 hours in!! THAT game doesn't even have the Radiant system..

The UI is a bit clumsy but not too bad once you figure out the hot keys. Do yourself a favor, if you're a fan of RPGs, PICK UP THIS GAME!

The game is simply unreal. Now, if they'd only add 1-4 player support in a DLC it would be complete. image

Thanks for your response, and all the others above as well.

Yes, I am a very big fan of RPG's. Sad you can't find anymore RPG in MMORPG's anymore (oh the irony).
I love immersive games like this seems to be, they are just very few and far in between, but maybe that's not such a bad thing.

I bound eveything 1-8 on my mouse then I used the Q to put the numbers to the skills and potions. You favourite them first then bind them.  Like healing was 1, magicka 2  then heal spell 3 and flame spell 4 and 5 for my sword and bow 6 and so on. If you want to equip two swords have two of the same sword and click 5 twice or click 4 twice for both hands to equip the same flame spell. Works with my G500 mouse.

This way I do not have to open the menu when I fight then when you want an upgrade or change it then just unfavourite it and reassign the numbers.

Skyrim is VERY immersive, it's the best dungeon crawling I've seen yet. The atmosphere and ambient sounds are incredible. image

I agree about MMOs, hopefully Bethesda will work on a 1-4 multiplayer expansion and maybe even a full MMO in the future. At any rate, this game is a MUST BUY for RPG lovers. Be warned though, you will lose hours, days and weeks!

I completely agree on the immersion factor, the sounds are amazing too, I about jumped out of my seat the first time I got jumped by a dragon.

I beat the main storyline in about 22 hours, it was a complete blast. Now I am going to go through and do the sidequests and what not.

I highly recommend this game for anyone who enjoys single players RPGS. I recommend the PC version for the mods, the tweaks and console commands (handy if you are too a.d.d with perks like I am).

  • I'm a little confused about the way skills work in this game so far. Does my skill level affect anything other than my character level and ability to take perks? Do I sneak any better at sneak level 100 with no perks than I do at sneak 25 with no perks?

I dont know, But i would say there could be an internal multiplier for say 1 handed swords that increases damage done per rank.

    of course thats just speculation.

Yes, the skill level affects things directly. Better sneaking and more damage with weapons, etc.

'Sandbox MMO' is a PTSD trigger word for anyone who has the experience to know that anonymous players invariably use a 'sandbox' in the same manner a housecat does.

No game is more fun than the one you can't play, and no game is more boring than one which you've become familiar.

I love how all the characters look grim, damn ugly and dirty i would never implement mods to make them all supermodels lol

Ive made my own character also seasoned and with scarfs and older, no catwalk model for me hehe.

Others may actually prefer such pacing. I would, however, liked to develop a character a bit before starting galloping. :)

P.S. I've read "you shouldn't have started"... Well, I didn't know I'm starting it at the earnest! It was masterfully hidden in the quest log between "kill the rat" and "bring me a silver spoon". Which, accidentally, I already had with me, having liberated it from some cave earlier.

If I had some warning, I wouldn't touch that quest yet!

Not sure what to tell you. They said "go to whithall" or whatever it was and I said "sure, I'll get there". Still not there.

Oh, and if people are having problems with crashing apparently it's a sound thing. I found something that indicated one should go to control panel - go to manage audio devices - right click on your audio device - go to properties - go to advanced and set your sound to 24 bit 44100 hz studio quality. I also saw one that said 16 bit so not sure which to believe but i set my to the 24 bit and I haven't had any crashes.

Just thought I'd add another solution to the crashing problem.  I just bought the game today, and it was literally crashing to desktop every 2 minutes or so.  No error or anything, the program just instantly closed.

I tried the sound solution, that didn't do it for me.  What ultimately resolved it was to close Steam entirely and run Skyrim WITHOUT Steam running (find and run the TESV.exe file to run the game).  Haven't had one crash yet since doing it.

    The game is great.

The UI is COMPLETE TRASH for PC, which it's bad enough that I'm shelving it until the mods start flowing.

Have played about 7 hours total, no problems at all but at least they could make a nice ui on the pc, i have a lot of keys on keyboard to use, can't be that hard for a developer to do.

The collectors edition box was bit huge i admit, and costly but love the TES games so might as well fork out on ce :)

Question : Interface - Can you have you  Magicka-Health-Stamina showing in Numbers instead of just colored bars  & can you have your HUD info allways on screem ,  & why no Minimap ?

If you loot them sometimes they have a contract on their body and it says why you are wanted.  :-D
