This game is like what the Dark Knight was to Batman Forever.. A gritty more realistic version of the same franchise.. We get nice blood effects straight out of the box, decapitations and pretty epicly grotesque finishing moves that really make the world a lot more believable..
Unlike Oblivion, the storyline over the land makes it seem so much darker. Everyone is in a desperite struggle during this age of war. It's so gritty, even from the very start and they make NO apologies (a.k.a. No Russian).
The controls do kinda feel consolish, but they actually fit and work once you get over what you already knew about PC Gaming and grasp it. The menu's are definitely optomized for consoles but they really don't intrude on you too much. It even pauses the game for you as you sort through.
Combat this time around makes you actually feel like you are playing a game, instead of just going through themotions to get through an encounter.. This time you have to actually fight for your life and if you have your difficulty set right and you get past the early bandit trash mobs, you will begin to see exactly what I mean.
The optimization is near flawless for a game of this maginitude. On this same machine, I have experienced a little bit of lag with BF3 on High and I stay at a constant 60 fps anywhere in this game..
Heh, that's a pretty interesting contrast. The PS3 version definitely looked sharper compared to the 360 version.
The xbox version looks like PC on low settings. PS3 looks like medium. Not to bad really. With PC I didnt notice a huge diffrence between high and ultra excet for how things looked at a far distance but the framerates took a huge dip. By far distance I mean looking from one mountaintop to another. The FPS dip was expected though. there was a LARGE diffrence between medium and high though and the frame change was only about 5fps for me.
Now if I could just figure out what to play. I have 1 of each race past the initial attack so I can swap without giong through that many times when I just wanna try something new lol.
The Armor models so far are also very blah. Hopefully there will be a healthy mod cummunity to help deal with that issue.
I'm really surprised you say this, I think they are one of the best features of the game. The armor and weapons are absolutely beautiful. FAR better than Oblivion.
in some cases it's almost art nouveau. Not really but it reminds me a bit of the style.
I don't suppose anyone could post a few screenshots of their characters? I'd particularly like to see how the faces turned out since I'm with fiontar in feeling disappointed when presented with lackluster customizationoptions. I don't trust what the marketing suits have made available. I'd like to see what gamers are actually seeing upon release.
the face customization is "ok". better than Oblvion and morrowind as far as art design but it's still lacking a bit.

I got about 10 hrs under my belt so far and really enjoying the game play. Very well made game, improvement over previous Scroll games somewhat imo. Had some pretty challenging puzzles so far.
I haven't even gotten to play the game yet and I am pissed off.
/end rant
Another idiot that doesnt read the packaging when buying a game. It is clearly written in red and white that it requires internet connection and a steam account, and as long as you didnt open the package then you can take it back to the retailer for your money back. which is also clearly printed on the package.
Your game is not controlled by steam, just you having a rage fit. grow up.
If people didnt pirate games and music then we wouldnt be using these security measures, blame yourselves for getting the crap you dont want, and get used to it because its going to get worse and less freedom is coming to the internet.
Yeah, I was raging, that is why I ended it with /end rant.
I am entitled to be angry that it requires 3rd party software to run, and I am entitled to express my displesure about it.
As for growing up, I believe grown-ups are quite capable of rage as well, just over other things, such as children, or other various misgivings in their life.
Either way, it did help to releive me of the anger I had surrounding it, as well as help me get past it. Sure it was a little silly, but ah well, what is done is done.
I still dislike steam, and everytime I do buy a game and it requires steam, I get pissed off, but I eventually get past it. The getting past it part is part of being a "grown-up".
We all can rage in the moment, to say you don't is a lie.
--------
On a side note, I could not figure out how to play steam off-line, but then again I didn't mess with it too much.

Skyrimm is absolutely beautiful though on max settings on the PC. The UI I admit is a bit clunky, but using "favorites" at least adds a little more simplicity.
Combat is enjoyable and am looking forward to playing the game more when I get time (granted steam lets me <--this is a joke).
So cheers to the game itself, but boo to the 3rd party software.
I am entitled to my opinions, misspellings, and grammatical errors.

For console PS3 is definitely the version to go for.
Completed main story line in 8 hours. Cities are still zoned though. Still got anouthe 100 hours of sidequestiongn to do though so the fun is far from over.
That's the experience many will have the main scripted quest is a bit on the brief side, but can do the side stuff and get a couple of weeks of enjoyment out of it.
Personally I'm probably not going to finish it anyway. If there's one thing I HATE in TES games it's being the friggin' CHOSEN ONE. It's so cliché it feels awkward. I just want to sandbox as a citizen of the world and love the faction questlines generally. Played Oblivion for hundreds of hours but never finished the main storyline either.
I hope one day, they'll release a game with a main quest ending very abruptly with the wizened wizzard and the counsel proclaiming that "We are really sorry about this, [insert playername], but you are not worthy to decide the fate of the world (You pick-pocketing piece of murdering scum!)" and they'll pick npc Pete instead.
I love being the chosen one.
Not only do I love being the chosen one but I backstory myself so that I'm "so chosen" it's disgusting.
Depending on the race I play, I can be a fallen "Angel", a daedra who was sent to disrupt Mehrunes Dagon, the son/daughter of a union between a mortal and a god/goddess or just the fantasy embodiement of Clint Eastwood.
So yeah, chosen one? no problem bring it on!
Just got home and the disk is in my hand. Bought two candles for a northern woods effect, have a big sandwich and a large coffee.
It's go time!

Skyrim is basically everything I hoped Oblivion would be after coming from Morrowind. I love the art-style and how the character models actually have personality again. The world feels wide open and expansive unlike how Oblivion often felt as if you were in a fish bowl. Combat is really my only complaint. It doesn't seem as responsive as Oblivion for whatever reason.
I have zero sympathy for anyone complaining about the PC version of this game. Those of you who beat your chest and proclaimed so loudly that the PC was the only way to enjoy this game should have known full well you were trading playability for framerate and high resolution textures.
See, I guess I'm the oddball out here, 'cause I'm having a blast on PC. No trouble what-so-ever with any of it. The controls took a bit to get used to, and remembering what keys do what took maybe 30 minutes to memorize... Besides that, I'm having no trouble at all on PC with mouse and keyboard.
The game looks fantastic, the attention to detail in the world design is stunning in my opinion.
I can see where the textures could use a bit of tweaking as they do look a little bit pixelated when you're close up and looking at them.. But when you're focusing on the game and the envrionment as a whole... I think it works beautifully.
The interface's simplicity - graphics wise - was surprising to me at first... But now that I think about it - it makes sense. It's simplistic/minimalist on purpose.... so it doesn't get in the way. That you have so little HUD elements on screen while you're playing really helps immerse you in the game more.
Oh.. and I LOVE that the characters look good! They've looked horrid in every previous game in the series so far, including Oblivion with its weird stretched-looking details. In previous games, I just tried to make the characters look as un-ugly as possible (up to and including mods for Morrowind, etc). In Skyrim, I'm actually having fun finding what combo of options make it look as good as I can.

Well.. having to have Steam loaded and running it from there is a bit annoying. I understand why they do it.. I just don't like it.

Thank god, I'm a lefty so default keyes in most games are very akward for me.
You can key map, but it won't work for you very well. Many things use directional keys or keys near the WASD keys, and they will not move when you rebind them to a new key. In many cases you will still need to use WASD or keys on the left side of the keyboard to do basic things. And you will find yourself hitting Tab a great deal. I mean all the damn time. And there is no way to change it. And even what you do manage to change, the in-game prompts will not change to reflect the new keys.
In short, you can remap keys, but not all actions associated with that key will change. And some things will be awkward or impossible for you to do.
You can remap keys, but not really.

I'm just happy the game is a decent challenge. Went into my first dwemer ruin, got pretty far in and fought one of those big Goliath guards with my dog and Lydia. We had our asses handed to us 3-4 times before I had to head out and get a heal other spell to keep Lydia and my dog up. That Goliath guard hits like a damn tank. 1 hit while I was not wearing armor took off 60-70 percent of my health. ( Playing a stealthy mage that dual wields axes.:P )
I purchased the collectors edition & after a few hickups with stream installing I got into the game & must say it looks amazing & run great even on my 2 year old machine
The only gripe I have is the 630 Page Official Game Guide that come with the collectors edition , yes you read right 630 pages , It gonna take me 2 weeks alone to read lol

Here's a scaled down image of an awesome sight I just witnessed upon traveling to a city... Borealis "flowing" behind the clouds. I stood there and kept watching it 'til the sun started rising behind the mountain, and the borealis disappeared.

Amazing game. I am playing it on Ultra settings and mods have already started to show up on Skyrimnexus. Also did some changes to skyrim ini file and game looks even more breath taking, couple of graphic enhancing mods that i will add tomorrow before i start another long play session. Can't wait to see how much more visualy stunning this game can get.
I have never played a TES Game before, yet i dont feel like i'm not in the know of what's going on.
The game is freaking BEAUTIFUL as well, except for the characters(besides Nord's). I suppose that's a franchise thing though(having never played TES games), that the character's are really....gritty, for lack of a better word lol. Maybe all my time on the OMG-this-digital-chick-just-gave-me-a-boner game's spoiled me. Still, in first person view, that doesn't really matter much either lol.
The combat is very challenging when fighting bigger mob's, my straight archer build got raped multiple times by trolls and giants when forced into close quarter fights. the fighting animations are really top notch in my opinion, though i did get a kick(a good one) out of the dual magic's Goku-esque kamehameha animations.
now, to escape the oncoming fanboi tags, i did have a bit of trouble getting into the openess of the world. So much so that i restarted on a new character to do it right lol. i found myself getting pwned by normal mobs in a certain embassy after doing ONLY storyline quests. This comes from the myriad of linear games i've played i suspect. If it didnt TELL me to go there, i didn't, and missed out on so much for it. So i restarted, and didnt follow the story atall after abit, i just wandered from city to city doing things for people and hunting random creatures for fun. Still havent made it back to the storyline yet.
On the Story itself, i am completely immersed. I thought at first the Dragon theme would be 'played-out' so to say, but i am actively hunting them fuckers now lol. After seeing the effects after killing one(reminded me of Highlander's There Can Be Only One scenes after cutting a head off) i was like "awwwww YEAH , that just happened. More!"
EDIT- I have the PC version, so im not sure what you guys on the console are looking at, but mine on ultra settings is crisper than a sheet of paper( 2x 6870's xfired, 1900x1200 resolution)
TL;DR- Go get it. right now. no, dont even finish this sentence. GO.
could anyone say what the chances of it being on sale on black friday are though?
just wait a month and it will be like $29.99 on amazon
Not likely. It'll be a long time before a game this good gets a permanent price drop.
I'd roam Target over the next 2 weeks every Saturday if you have any near by. They often have new titles (even big titles) 5 to 10 bucks off. At worse you'll get a 5 or 10 dollar gift card as a bonus.
I used to play MMOs like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee.
One would hope that other developers would take a look at what Bethesda's achieved here (yet again), and maybe take some inspiration from it.
But no... Most other developers keep doing exactly as he explains... finding ways to limit what we can do to keep us on their "critical path" and play the game exactly the way they want us to.
I do agree with the "chosen one" thing, though. It's getting a bit old. Although, I guess it's kinda like.. "If you're not there to serve some specific purpose, or play some significant role, then what makes you any different from anyone else in Skyrim?"
And besides, there is the opportunity to ignore the main storyline and go off to become whatever you want to become anyway. I imagine you could spend hundreds of hours in the game before even fighting your first dragon if you so chose.
There's definitely something - many somethings, actually - about this particular installment that has me immersed and enthralled to a degree I haven't been since first playing Morrowind... only I kind of like this game's pacing a little bit more.
Another thing I would like to point out.. I think next time someone states that a game can't look good if it's "only using DX9", I'm going to point them to Skyrim and beg to differ.

I'll be honest, I'm glad there aren't more npc's or mobs. I just hate worlds where you go every 20 ft and get attacked. I love getting lost in a wilderness and feeling that I'm far from civilization.
maybe some more wildlife in certain areas.

Also did some changes to skyrim ini file and game looks even more breath taking, couple of graphic enhancing mods that i will add tomorrow before i start another long play session. Can't wait to see how much more visualy stunning this game can get.
This Game Friggin Rawks.
GO.
The Deep Web is sca-ry.
PC gamer has a pretty good write-up too. Mentions the negatives honestly, but like most of us here: mainly full of praise.
"While everyone else is faffing around with how to control and restrict the player, Bethesda just put a fucking country in a box. It’s the best open world game I’ve ever played, the most liberating RPG I’ve ever played, and one of my favourite places in this or any other world.
In case I’m not getting it across, this is a thumbs-up."
Lol
My brand new bloggity blog.
That is awesome lol!
But so true.

Game absolutely looks beautifull and with freedom to go wherever you wanne go its screaming for exploring finding secrets roam dungeons or ruins. Only wish world was bit more popu;ated with npcs and mobs and more difficult to fight them.
Hope to build full AMD system RYZEN/VEGA/AM4!!!
MB:Asus V De Luxe z77
CPU:Intell Icore7 3770k
GPU: AMD Fury X(waiting for BIG VEGA 10 or 11 HBM2?(bit unclear now))
MEMORY:Corsair PLAT.DDR3 1866MHZ 16GB
PSU:Corsair AX1200i
OS:Windows 10 64bit
I'll be honest, I'm glad there aren't more npc's or mobs. I just hate worlds where you go every 20 ft and get attacked. I love getting lost in a wilderness and feeling that I'm far from civilization.
maybe some more wildlife in certain areas.
