I see a lot of people saying that SWTOR is doomed because it's linear. Since when did linear become synonymous with bad? My favorite RPG series to date is Mass Effect, and that's as linear as it gets. Saying SWTOR will fail because it's linear it's like saying Mass Effect is bad because it's not Skyrim. I'm sure plenty of people prefer the former over the latter, myself included.

It is not even that linear. yes it is no sandbox but is it a very linear game? nope. Once you reach Corsucant one can pretty much go in any direction as numbert of planets are open for exploration. But ofcourse if you are following your personal storyline it will be linear.
There are many mis conceptions about this game and hopefully it will change after this coming weekend.
it's not really hate, but rather a disproportionate reaction causing hardcore fans to perceive it as "hate". the game should not be excused for being more linear than world of warcraft. linearity is frowned upon and seen as a flaw(not a gamebreaking one mind you) in most RPG's and MMO's. it's nothing new, it's been dislike for ages.
Mostly I think people are worried that linear will mean there is a finite amount of content .. meaning the game will only be fun for a few months as once you have done the story, there wont be a lot else to do. I think a lot of people are just hoping someone comes up with something that isn't so restrictive and doesn't just funnel you to more of the same raids / pvp endgame boredom.
Of course there are 8 different stories so there is replayability .. but that isn't for everyone I guess.
The flip side of it is also that people seem to be tired of being told what to do and are looking for something where they have more freedom than most if not all AAA titles allow.
LFD tools are great for cramming people into content, but quality > quantity.
I am, usually on the sandbox .. more "hardcore" side of things, but I also do just want to have fun. So lighten up already
You have to remember alot of ppl on these forums want a "hardcore" sandbox mmorpg. But looking at recent attempts at sandbox games and how uderly bad they failed i can not say im sad that they are sticking with a standard model for Swtor.
People just think they know better then the multi million dollar companys.
Strange thing, i love movies and books, and they are all linear.
Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)
Follow the yellow/orange lines on the map. It is a themepark mmo and that will sell well with the kids.

Yes there are lines on the maps. I have been testing for months. Follow the line man they will lead you to victory!!!
Pure and simple because there are quite a few gamers out there that would love to see a game world they can interact with without feeling like they are on an imaginary leash.
While I agree with you that linear games can be quite fun, the fact that pretty much all of the AAA MMOs are this way leaves some gamers seriouly annoyed that they don't have a game they can pick that suits their needs. For this game it is also still some of the backlash that this game isn't SWG 2.0, or at least fans hoping this game would somehow be able to be different from the rest of the MMO genre. Something Bioware never promised.

So they show you were to go.. So what If you read the dialog it tells you were to go to ( IN any MMO) so whats the diff between showing and having to read were to go? apart from those of us who don t want to read 200000 pages of text in a game.
See, I remember what MMOs were like back in the day when there was no content.
No quests, no instances, no in-game lore or events...
Just some game mechanics, a bunch of numbers, and a fair number of players.
We found stuff to do, most of which was killing each other for various bits of this and that.
But in retrospect?
I could never go back.
I love Skyrim, but it's also got amazing storylines and characters to offset the fact most of the "quests" are really just travel, kill, collect types spiced up with various bits of dialogue and interesting settings.
But isn't that exactly what TOR offers?
There has never been a "true" sandbox MMORPG, because a true sandbox would have no levels or raising of skills or any type of grind for anything one way or another.
MMOs are by their very nature dependant upon the grind - be it story or levels or skills or money etc.
But how well is that grind hidden? How "fun" is the activities and systems and locations/characters etc. we interact with on our path from noob to veteran?
That is what I look for these days, that the journey is a fun one and there is enough content to keep me happily entertained for a good long while.
TOR from my experience has all of these things and has them presented in a format and with a variety and also sheer volume of content that is most, most pleasing.
Anyone who wants a sandbox can fuck off, theres plenty of those shitty sandbox mmos out there, time for something else for the rest of us.
I think the space combat is Linear as hell
There are no lines on the maps he is just jesting.
True but then you don't get to make any personal impact on these films or books. And once you finish one there are millions of others to chose from. The same cannot be said of MMOs.

It's posts like this that make me hate people on this site. Elitism at its finest.
Follow the lines on the map man. I am telling you they will lead you to victory. They are on the minimap in the right corner as well as on the man map that you can pull up.
It is all about following the lines.
I think he's talking about actual roads on the map. He's just trying to be cute about it. Put him on ignore because he has nothing of substance to add.
Easy there big guy I am pointing out it is a linear themepark mmo. I am sorry if my sense of humor as somehow offended you lol.
It was your original post on this thread that offended me. Saying that you think the game is too linear is one thing. [Mod Edit]
I have no problem with linear content but I don't like constricted playfields. It doesn't bother me if I am supposed to go to this zone after that zone but I would like those zones to be explorable and have secrets. SWTOR seemed a little tight but I hope it gets better past the newb zones. There was some exploring to be done in the beginning (hidden holocrons mostly) and I hope that eventually the planets are full sized explorable worlds. The thing that I really didn't like is that every square inch was used for some sort of quest mob. RIFT did this as well and I'm just not a fan of it.
Pleas stop complaining about workd size or world openness until you get off the first planet. You are wrong. They get much bigger. It's the starting zone, of course it's smaller.
Sincerely,
Everyone who has played the game long enough to get past level 7.

My current toon is mid 30's republic and the maps open up some when you get to Tat and Alderan or however you spell it. The lower level planets have a more confined feel to them. But that being said it is stll all about following the line man.
Personally I prefer a less structured enviroment but that does not sell well with the masses.
The inner explorer in me is not a big fan of linear at at. That is why I couldn't play Aion, Rift, Warhammer and others. I like open areas and several of them to choose from (for each level set i.e. 30-40). And when I finally go to embark on a quest, I dont want to feel claustraphobic (sp?) while doing it....for whatever reason that's how SWTOR feels....can't explain why, that's just how it feels for me. Another thing is that linear is more than just the world of the game, it's the progression, crafting and so on....to me the entire game feels linear...from gear and crafting to companions and skill rotations...but i said before that most of these are basic limitations for any themepark type MMO and at least for me, they have run their course. Just not interested anymore.
Rofl are you serious or just trolling? There's like ..... 3 or 4 sandbox's? And about a couple hundred themepark mmos.
A lot of drama over swtor lately. People like different things...omg.
70% of this forum being dedicated to these swtor flamewars makes me appreciate massively.
