There are cinematic cutscenes in Skyrim like TOR? really? i have sunk over 100 hours and haven't come across one cutscene in Skyrim yet.
You have never seen the 'Killing blow' Cinematic in Skyrim? Really?

Actually it does. It shows that Skyrim graphic mods carry into Skyrim Cinematics, just as DAO and DA2 graphic mods carry over into those cinematics as well. DAO and DA2 cinematics are a much better and common example, but you seemed to avoid addressing that exmaple.
Nexus demonstrates that graphic modding easily carries over into cinematics, and as such, suggests that graphic differences in TOR were not a factor in the limited CC ranges.
Just my experienced opinion here....but if you're standing in one place mashing buttons in SWTOR, you're doing it wrong.
And this behavior is of course probably just a bad habit picked up from other MMOs.
I think it will be a while before people "get it" with SWTOR's combat. They see a hotbar, and can tab to target, and they assume that it's just like the other games they are used to.
In answer to your question.....no, I don't think so. Try Darkfall, and tell me how much fun FPS combat is in an MMORPG.
You're really going to fucking site DARKFALL as the example of FPS combat in an MMO failing? Completely absurd. Try TERA and say the same.

I know the OP is a big fan of Skyrim and the Mount and Blade series (so am I btw) but the worst thing about both of those games is the combat, esp. melee combat. With SWTOR having multiple classes that use light sabers (melee weapons) it would be a problem having a more fps style combat rather than the more tradtional rpg type combat. The other Star Wars games that were fps (Battlefront, Jedi Academy etc.) had very limited melee combat, which consisted mainly of clicking your mouse once the cursor was over the target. Thats fun in a game that has around 20 hours of content, but try playing like that in an mmo for months on end. I don't think most people would find that fun for very long.
Is a man not entitled to the herp of his derp?

I played Planetside and it has FPS combat, and it was a blast. Please do not use DF though as an example of a good FPS MMO, because it isn't.
Also, tell me what good running around in SW:ToR is...everything is based on RNG combat. Once something or someone has targeted you, its a roll fo the dice if they hit you - no amount of jumping or running is going to change that. It isn't Asheron's Call and it isn't Planetside.
At least be fair towards Darkfall. Before magic was a factor... meaning Beta / EU launch the FPS combat in Darkfall was both interesting and fun while also fairly balanced between melee / archery. There were actually tactics to employ using shield walls and so forth. Only after the dominance of Magic did Darkfall FPS combat truly "Suck"
Would TOR be better as an FPS? I'd like to think so. I'm sick of tab target no matter the twist they put on it.
Now I know this is a sticky subject with some people that feel the standard hotbar, tab target, combat mechanics is how an MMO should be made, but I can't help but wonder what this games combat would have been like with FPS combat. Not psuedo FPS, but good FPS with real type ballistics physics. Imagine the kind of fights one might have using this type of game play. It worked for such games SW: Battlefront and Jedi Acedemy - why not SW:ToR?
Gone would be the static, stand in one place playing whack-the-mole. Gone would be the static, stand in one place, shooting it out. Because that is how the current games combat mechanics, which to me, are sad, dull, and boring. Am I the only one that feels FPS combat would have made this game a 100% better and a game that would have been challenging and fun?
I tried it in one of the beta weekend and I think like you, fps combat could have improved the game, sure. Even if the game is fun as it is.

Darkfall archery was very, very good. Surprisingly good. So good, it gave me hope for FPS elements in that environment. Nothing is as fun as stalking prey in shadows with a bow that was subject to physics. It felt like hunting! Awesomeness. (DF had other problems, and melee was a near miss, almost being acceptable; again, other problems)
With regard to the folks who are worried about ping/etc. affecting their FPS playability, you will not get more than a ping of ~100 with a server located almost anywhere in the contiguous states to wherever you could possibly live. With any decent MMO release, there are typically PST and EST if not CST servers. This would further improve the pings of players, especially if the game wasn't catering to IPs from outside the country or continent. A ping of 100 or lower is almost unnoticeable in most circumstances, with ~50ms being ideal.
Asheron's Call was a fantastic game, and I enjoyed it for years. It also utilized FPS elements and allowed you to dodge spells thrown your way, which is an amazing feature for immersion.
I suppose I don't understand people "loathing" or "hating" FPS games to the point of being COMPLETELY against even trying an MMOFPS in a setting that utterly deserves it (Star Wars). The FPS style isn't for everyone, and of course a lot of whiney people will site reason X or reason Y for hating them, based on their experiences in a warm living room in January 1998, being ganged up on in Bond Goldeneye on N64.
The point of the genre is fun, and fun with other people. For me, that means competition and a test of skills, and a combat system that offers a depth of immersion unattainable with conventional methods that slow the pace of the game and limit creative inputs (skills/problem solving) that FPS competition (against AI and other players) offer. I think the future of the genre lies in the "cross-polination" of these species, in an MMO setting.

Yeah, I am. I played Darkfall for a year, started at release when you had be up at the ass-crack of dawn spamming F5 waiting for the store to open for five minutes.
With regard to the folks who are worried about ping/etc. affecting their FPS playability, you will not get more than a ping of ~100 with a server located almost anywhere in the contiguous states to wherever you could possibly live.
I live in Virginia. My normal latency to the ToR servers was ~180ms and up. Ping aint that useful a tool because it's a one shot deal. Sometimes my latency reached as much as three seconds. So I'm going to call bullshit on that one.
That's possibly a 'quality of ISP'/quality of server issue as well. I just know from doing /cmd and pinging different servers around the country. Worst was a weather channel server in Maine from me in LA, ~120 ms.

Ping isn't a one shot deal. It pings 3 times and you can continue to spam ping over and over to explore maxima/minima. I'm in LA and my ping to Germany is 200.
When I tested TOR I thought the 2 best things in it were:
1. Combat fluidity - the combat was very very good, although as a consular I felt that bioware fell into the lame trap of not allowing moving while casting.
2. Flashpoints - felt like you were in the movies, but again you were running through things fast, like they did on the Death Star.
I honestly don't think combat would be improved with FPS combat.

What part of variable internet latency and inadequate server response times is so hard to understand?
you're right we wouldn't want that to be a factor maybe they (future MMO desighers) should go back to EQ1 style ... no wait i remember lagging in that game and having the mob get some free shots. so how about true turn based combat.
I stand in front of you, i bring up my menu use my attack and then click the "finish turn" button. so you then can pull up your menu and make your move, when you're done don't forget to clicke the "finish turn" button.
I mean we wouldn't want latency and server response to decide and outcome right?
So exacerbating a problem solves it?
/facepalm
so we shouldn't innovate because problems might occure?
sorry but when i see games like Planetside able to carry out 100 vs 100 vs 100 player wars and yea there was lag here and there but nothing gamebreaking and nothing constant, then see people whining on the forum "omg what about latency and server response!!!!"
as a response to action oriented mechanics getting put in a game. it just seems like they are clueless.
Planetside was unplayable for a lot of people due to so much of the hit detection being client side. Being shot through walls isn't much fun. Piss poor example.

I don't think EA wants to limit it's playerbase to only people with good internet connections. That would pretty much doom the game to failure.
I think its time to get off your 56k modem. i was on crap DSL back in the day with an even worse PC and planetside ran fine for me.
so just because you're on some 56k modem or live in some podunk town doesn't mean we should keep the same dumbed down combat. maybe online gaming ain't for you?

Wasn't much static about the combat I experienced in Beta .... Not sure what game you are playing.....
SWTOR is what it is and I believe Bioware have taken the right approach for an MMO; Asking the above question indicates you do not really understand the MMO challenges of Tactics/Longevity/Growth against fast furious and insta gratification.
One can support vast large worlds the other requires a small map crowded with people overdosing on caffine and food containing lots of E numbers.

...And, depending on how you set it up, you'd annoy the healers all to hell =/
Interesting point, versulas, and I had thought the same thing. With healing AoEs and something akin to an aura spell or a "healing grenade" type AoE, it can be done. I think there are some videos of TERA healing out on youtube. I don't mean to go off topic, but it's worth looking up as the question of healing in FPS games is definitely a tough one to design and develop for.

Meh... too many casual players to pull it off.
...And, depending on how you set it up, you'd annoy the healers all to hell =/
Well one thing is for sure for me, combat needs to improve and become more interesting, tab targetting isq getting old and boring.
Would of liked to had seem some more added to the combat, does it need to be FPS, maybe, maybe not. But this system is olf and boring.
