SW:ToR - better with FPS style combat?

Baud rate has nothing to do with latency. Planetside's problem was the way the game was constructed to avoid latency.  Look up wall hacks sometime. A quarter of the United States' population lives in podunk towns or the equivalent. They're not going to restrict online gaming to the left coast no matter how much you want it. It's just not practical to make a proper FPS MMO at this time. Not unless they rescind Einstein's speed limit or set up lots of regional servers.

What developer would ever release a game running on severs solely on the West Coast?  Planetside was ultimately fine, and playing on DSL was enjoyable.  Some of my best gaming memories are from the battles in that game, from beta (RIP Jackhammer) through release, and I even tried to play it through BFR days.

What is this, 1998?  Not practical to make an MMOFPS?  You underestimate the state of affairs regarding our information superhighway.  I'm hoping TERA pulls it off, and I'm all over Planetside 2.  I wish some developer with $$$bling$$$ would take what Darkfall tried to do and polish it up, make it awesome.  I wished TOR had at least tried it.  Bah, moot point.

Would of liked to had seem some more added to the combat, does it need to be FPS, maybe, maybe not.  But this system is olf and boring.

I could say the same thing about FPS.  i just bought BF3 and already sick of the game.

2 of my favorite games are Star Wars Battlefront and Xwing vs Tie Fighter. If Swtor had the style of combat of them, I would've preordered without thinking. It would be a very different type of MMO. Tab targeting is the worse combat systems in games in my opinion, I wish RPGs would find a different method.

A hybrid FPS or even a TPS like Mass Effect would do very well in a Star Wars game in my opinion.

Also, who ever mentioned  getting rid of the holy trinity, god yes. I feel it's bizzaro world to try and fit that style of gameplay into a Star Wars themed game.

I'm kinda with you on that dude.  The game doesn't have enough "fun" packed into it.  Not to mention the maps are freakin small for my tastes.  TF2 was fun for a long, long time.  I'll continue to try MMOFPS titles, as someone is bound to get it right in not too long.

I don't mind having to aim in games, I know the Fallen Earth version isn't an exemplar by any means, but I felt after 2 years of it that tab-targetting games were easy-mode.

That changed once I started testing SW:TOR, I've said elsewhere that one of the things I admire most about the design is the way they train people for group content through 'solo' content.

There are enemies pretty early on that use AoE targetting droids on you, that you should be skipping out of range of (and I'm not just talking about the suicide droids in Black Talon), if memory serves you first come across these on Hutta, and there's quite a few of them throughout thegame. At the very least they should teach players not to stand in the fire (or on the big glowy target). Later on there are mobs that heal other mobs too. Mobs that use cover, mobs that bring friends.

As you progress through the game combat is anything but static (if you want to stay alive). The early areas (first few planets) are much more forgiving as it's assumed people are still learning how to play their class. For quite a few players, that will be the case. Combat on Belsavis or Hoth is not the same as combat on Dromund Kaas or Balmorra. Belsavis was pretty challenging for me the first time through. I was under-level for it, but I had a blast until I entered an area where I could barely dent the mobs (darned 5 level mechanic) and ended up doing some space and some PvP til I dinged and could put some hurt on them.

If you're on-level, there will still be some tricky times, the only way at late game you can get away with static combat is if you out-level the zone, and that's only possible up to a point (with cap at 50, you're still going to have to play at level on some planets).

    It just doesnt fit...

TOR is very heavy on abilitys, people would have to manage 20 different buttons + mouse targeting.. its maybe for some pro gamer kiddies but not for causual gamers.

I played fallen earth, it was ok couse you had very few skills so it was manageable.

Its just a different playstyle... and I even think that managing and timing your class skills is much more complicated then FPS like, aiming for heads.

I think FPS style combat would have been awesome :).. but sadly the would have been too different for them.. They needed a pure and simple themepark cookiecutter MMO and thats what we got..

I get annoyed with FPS combat. It gets boring real fast for me.

I would definitely prefer it Teala, but Bioware has played it very safe with this title and they have a certain target audience in mind.

This topic kind of excites me because server technology has finally come along far enough that a solid FPS mmo could be technically feasible.  I am really excited to see what Firefall, and Planetside Next bring to the table.

I would avoid the game if it had gone anywhere near FPS combat. Having played the game I am more than happy with it's combat as it is.

Well, once someone does make an MMOFPS that works as intended, let me know, cause it has yet to happen.

I'm certain there are a few that are/were working as intended.  Planetside the best example, WWII online, and whatever your take on TERA might be.  If you're at all interested, I'd keep an eye on TERA and Planetside 2.  These two may help to bring some change into traditions in MMOing.

How strange, everytime there's a thread about alternative combat styles in MMOs, the only option discussed is FPS style combat ...

MMO with Arkham Asylum style combat? Hell yes!

Lasers should not change direction. What are they, homing lasers?

    That is all.
