I've been playing TOR since June. If it was #1 on XFire right now I'd say that the game just officially launched and that there was no way to consider the numbers reliable since it's new. We need to get past the free month and initial launch first before anyone should be claiming that a game is reaching its peak. Why? Because XFire is unreliable and it's too soon to make any definitive statements at all about the real shape of the game.
Good or bad, it doesn't matter. XFire is the perfect example of self-selection bias. Anyone who's ever actually taken a statistics class will tell you that it makes them a useless source of information for that reason alone.

XFire is a perfect example of self-selection bias. Using it as a metric for anything is meaningless, since people have to install it to use it, thus excluding large sections of a game's playerbase. ANY game's playerbase, BTW, not just SWTOR's.
As a statistical tool, it would be tossed out because it's not going to give reliable information.
Except it is still relevant cause I have seen no proof claiming Xfire is used only by X type of players.
I see all type of online games represented there, so unless you want to claim that people that install Xfire have an hidden agenda or are all FPSers or what else, I think it is still relevant.
No, it is not scientific accurate, but really? do we need scientifc data for forum discussion and by God! if it is not 100% perfect then it is completely useless?? Wow.
Considering xfire data is pretty good when considering the same game only to track trend of players, I think it can be a valuable asset.
That being said, it is still too early to tell any trend. Let's wait until the end of the first 2-3 months, then we can see how it goes.
Personally, I am enjoying the game, I think it is well made and really immersive, but replaying the same story with an alt is a problem and it triggers spacebaritis. And yes I know that you get the class quest being different, but I went through Coruscant twice, one with my Jedi Knight and one with my Trooper, and there is like 1 class quest per area of Corustcant (Migrant guild, Black sun, Justicar and the Works). all the other 10s of quests are common.
Also I found out only acertain % of conversation options differ from class to class but most are the same. So yes, my trooper will say something about duty to the Republic instead of the Force occasionally, but more often than not, the sentences are the same or similar.
Still, combat is quite engaging and I am going as slow as I can (I am level 21 with both) to not ruin my experience. Also I love the space game

It may have gotten to #1 if people could get their time cards, as I am still waiting for mine to arrive, and have been locked out of the game for a week now, because of their stupid system. If I did not have to enter a time card to access the free 30 days, or time cards were easy to get, then I would have been playing SWTOR ticking up some hours for it.
I don't use xfire, neither are we forced to use xfire, so basing a games success on a program which not everyone uses is quite pointless.
Heh no it is not.
It can be used as one part of a way to determine trends in gaming. I could care less if it is used for SWTOR or WOW or any other game. It is just another piece of data that CAN be used if you do it right.
That has been my point, and the whole point, the whole time:P Because this person uses it and those 2 do not, does not make it better or worse. It is just data, if this week 1k play a game, and 2 weeks later it is 2 k and 4 weeks later it is 5 k, then that is a trend and a piece of data.
It does not represent any thing else, but it does produce some info, like it or not:) Saying YOU do not use it, or know anyone else that does will not change it either:)
Basing anything on unreliable data is unreliable.
Agreed. Good thing then Xfire isn't totally unreliable. I have been following numbers on Xfire since 2003. The data can't be used to say anything about the numbers of players playing a game.
But one thing it is damn accurate about showing is the trend in a game. If the game is increasing in popularity or not.
The top 5 games on Xfire is ALWAYS the top 5 games that is generally accepted in all communities. Show me one game on that list that you can go "rofl, that is so wrong, no one but Xfire gamers play that".
League of Legends skyrocketed there about the same time gaming community was talking about how big that game has gotten. SWTOR seems damn accurate as well just using the data as guidelines and not statistical proof.
Just watch when Diablo 3 hits the market and SWTOR is no longer on the top 5 list. That will be pretty accurate as well trendwise going.
There are rougly 140 000 people online on xfire on any given day. I'd say that is a pretty good number to show if a game is popular or not.
However I agree that you can't draw any conclusions on number of subs/players for a game given the data on xfire.
Ok, the XFire user count for SWTOR is increasing, its now above 10k. The average playtime is higher per user than for wow or other games. The trend is still showing increase!
And now, checking how other games behave i have found that RIFT has now numbers in XFire that compare to numbers that AoC had last year and if XFire is a trendsetter than that game has nowhere near the numbers the fans still claim.
Warhammer is rightfully on pos 339...
In the end SWTOR is still healthy, no server closures announced and no Riftlike sales rushes. I believe it will have a month more than predicted

The point is, XFire requires that people install it, meaning that their numbers are entirely self-selected. From a statistics point of view, that makes their numbers meaningless.
If we really wanted to gauge TOR's numbers, we'd need a random sample of MMO players, not just a group of people who have installed a particular program. We'd ALSO have to wait until after the free month and the novelty of the initial launch have passed, and people are actually being charged subscription fees to play the game. That's the point.
Look -- I'm a fan of TOR. Been playing since June. It's the first MMO I've played in a few years because graduate school pretty much trumps my gaming life most of the time. I'm having a blast playing it. But even if TOR was #1 on XFire I *still* wouldn't trust the numbers because it's based on a self-selected user base.
xfire isnt a good measurement tool at all , in fps games alot of ppl use it but None of my guildys or reallife friends that play mmorpg games ever used it before.
Yeah, Xfire isn't a great measuring stick at all lol. Gamers do not equal MMO gamers first off so regardless of how many Xfire users there are it's moot to bring it up. Secondly it's used less and less by those playing online games as many anti cheat programs have conflicted with Xfire and it is fairly pointless considering whats needed out of what it offers is done better by so many other people.
I mean if we are to use Xfire WoW has 20k people playing a day and it's boasting 10mil subs, does that mean with 10k players a day SWTOR has 5mil subs?
Haters and fans of games need to stop using Xfire as a measuring stick.
Myth
Xfire is good because it has a good sample size -
Wrong. It's a mix of gamer types and most of which are not MMO players. Xfire has had enough issues in the past that most online gamers do not use it or at least turn it off when they play online.
Myth
Xfire can give you at least an idea of how popular an MMO is -
Wrong. It's so random who uses it and several games with large communities don't even have a Xfire pressence due to problems in the past and due to some that still exist. And again...... it's a bit random on who uses Xfire. And we won't even get into the discussion on whether devs/gms/mods/fans use Xfire to try and boost hype.
Bottom line, for the most part Xfire is fairly useless the good things that it offers are done better by so many others. Xfire is not an accurate measuring stick to be used for or against a game. If you use Xfire, good for you I guess but just keep in mind most gamers do not especially online gamers and those that do do not have it on all the time.

it represents a SAMPLE of the PC gaming population, and as such, can be used to determine trends in gaming. There is a definite link between WoW as the top MMO for so long, and the top xfire played game. it reflects trends within a sample. not too hard to understand. if SWTOR drops out of the top 5, that would tend to indicate the game is not growing, but declining. pretty simple stuff really.

All I can say is that it was accurate at showing population trends with AoC, WAR, AION, and RIFT. Each time someone would say "but it's not accurate", but time and time again it was. I'm not saying that it is infallible, but it does show a trend and those trends have been accurate in the past.
not reading 22 pages of this, but it shows 10,000 SWTOR players use xfire. thats less than 1%. Kind of tough to draw any realistic conclusions from that at this point.
Its also not a good sampling. For instance it may have a decent relevance to the 18-25 bracket, but the amount of people 30+ that use xfire is extremely small.
Xfire is a free application that combines multiple gaming tools into one powerful tool to alleviate the need to run multiple different gaming related programs. For instance, Xfire allows you to chat with your friends, see what games they are playing, what servers they are playing on and join them instantly with one click. Xfire also allows you to show off your gaming skills by capturing screenshots and videos and uploading them to your Profile page on the Xfire website.
If you use it when you log on it shows what games you are playing and for how long as well. They then have some stats on how many x-fire users are playing which game and how many player hours, stuff like that.

Ok, lets use your example. If 10 k x-fire users play SWTOR and they play 90 k hours this week, in 2 weeks they play 120 k hours, and in 1 month it is up to 160 k hours of playing SWTOR.
Would that not say for x-fire users it seems to be more popular for them? And that they are playing more or have added players?
So either you are willing to use it as a tool or try to find some silly argument that it is worthless. Can you look at it for one day and say anything? no of course not. But it can be used as a way to see what that particualr group of x-fire users are playing and how much over time. Thats all.

I dont think it will be still atop 5 game 3 months from now, but time will tell and the trend in xfire will allow nearly perfectly with the health of the game...this has played out time and time and time again on xfire.
