I guess there's some confusion about this. There was not some "high quality textures" pack that was up to now enabled and is now being taken out. From what I saw, they never used high quality textures in open beta. There were always two sets usable in game; what's now being called "medium" and "low".
Sure, there was a setting for high quality textures, but it did nothing. It actually loaded low textures - not even medium! And when you picked "low" quality textures from the settings, the game now loaded the so-called "medium" textures (that is, higher than low but still lower than those seen in cinematics). The selection going all wrong was a bug, but the unavailability of actual high res textures had to be intended. Your safest option to get best textures the game would give you was to load up the .ini file and put TextureQuality=0 there. And again, those were just medium textures: Better than low, but not cinematics-good.
I remember several threads on forums and on reddit going on about this, and the general consensus seemed to be that the game had settings for "hi-res textures" but actually you could not use high res textures during gameplay (except maybe a few points where they seemed to load for afraction of a second, like when you click on a holo terminal). Nobody seemed to be able to get into close-up and take a cinematics quality image of their character. I know I tried and in close-up textures were a mess.
During a large chuck of Closed Beta the High settings were indeed present. Just because you were not present for that does not mean they did not exist. And considering that not only do you mave beta testers like myself confirming this but also Bioware; dismissing the claims as being a misunderstanding is a far stretch.
There were indeed hi-res textures in Closed Beta, and the game looked much better then than it does now.
Yeah, that's why I said "up to now enabled and is now being taken out" and also specified beta as "open beta". I also did not say "misunderstanding" but rather "confusion".
I am also not dismissing any claims. It's just that there seem to be people who think we have the high quality textures in now and they'll be gone after the patch.
Here another posted picture from one of the last closed beta test days, before they removed the highres textures!
If people are unable to see the difference between these screenshots and what we currently have ingame, they really need to get a good pair of glasses!

After a number of player voiced their concerns over the suddenly lower textures in the game they stated that the final game will look much better and not to worry.
These are the "real" highres textures that were once present and available in the Beta Client and now dissabled and only visible via cutscenes!
Just look at the amount of detail! The game looks so much better than now. No way and no NVidia panel tweaking will get you anywhere close to this, simply because they hardcoded the highres textures out of the game on character models to only show during cutscenes!
oh Im very aware we used to have hi-res and loved how it looked I see how good they are when I go into a cut-scene.. Yes I'm pissed they are dropping the textures and making up a bunch of bullcrap just like what happened to match to chest in beta.. but with super sampling you can at least make the game look a lot better than it does now.

Wow didn't know this game has bump and spec maps, the textures were too blurry to tell.
The game actually looks better with this edited ini file! The default, with just AA enchancing via NVidia Panel (as it won't allow override for swtor.exe) looks even worse!
No matter what I do, I won't get the High Res textures like in the cut scenes! Simply because it's dissabled!
There is proof posted on the forums in the Remote Renderer topic about how they HARD CODED to reduce texture quality by 50% on player models!
Exactly what we are seeing. Blurry unsharp textures on our characters!
There is no way to override something they HARD CODED into the client! And now we got a official statement confirming this!
ini settings make game look better than original yes BUT super sampling and sparse grid make game look way better than ANY setting in the INI.. no you cant make the textures appear high res but you can sharpen and smooth out by forcing super sampling making things overall look a ton better
also with my settings the cutscene armors look just amazing and so wish I could get these all the time:(

Okay I looked and the graphics change HAS NOT been patched in yet.... so any screenshots posted from the client as it stands now are irrelevent unless they are from the PTR as that is where the issue is. Once the PTR patch goes live then you will see the change of the high settings to actually be the medium settings...
So yes the games looks okay right now... until patch time
No... please show me the line in there where you are getting this statement. What he is saying. Is that there was a low medium and high setting. This should have been low and high. Even if you used the high setting, you were only getting medium, as the true high was removed. The extra option was a bug.
The textures in game now are what is being used. I really can't see how you're not getting this? The high setting was always the medium. It didn't change anything when you selected high. For the love of god. The whole point of this thread was about the textures being gone now... not after the patch... now. So, the textures are gone for high now. When you click high in game right now, you're getting medium. You get it?
If what you're saying was correct, the high textures would still be there now and removed after the patch. They're not there now. That's the reason for the thread........Please tell me you get it now. Please.

I don't doubt they had highres textures in closed beta, but... about that screenshot... Isn't depth of field restricted to cinematics?
For the love of god... there's nothing that arguing in these here forums is going to do. The textures are gone for now. They have said that they'll try to come up with a way to add them, but for now, they're gone.
So either leave the game, or play the game. That's the only option. Why won't they lock this thread?
Meh could care less either way. I play games for their entertainment value, not how they look. If I wanted to go oooh pretty graphics, I can go watch Avatar. I still play UO from time to time, and thats not even in 3d.
Also if you are disgusted by this, and think this is such a huge deal, you really need to turn on the news more and see what real major corporations are doing to people, not some company that did not include high res textures that a 100 people out of the over 2 million people who bought it, will care about.
[Mod Edit] We're in 2012, graphics play a major part in games whether you like it or not, and for a hell of a lot of people it IS one of the major deciding factors.
To say "If I wanted to go oooh pretty graphics, I can go watch Avatar" is just moronic. Watching a movie has no relevance whatsoever to a game, even IF it has amazing effects/graphics.

I tried to turn on super sampling, just for giggles. I did not see any improvement with my current gear on my Jedi Guardian. Only that my framerates were cut in half! :-/ So I dissabled it again.
No matter how people twist it and how the diehard fans try to push this away as a non-issue and call us drama queens!
Fact is that they had to recreate the thread for the 4th time now, due to passing the 1000th post mark.
If the diehard fans like it or not, there are a hell lot of people pissed off right now and this cluster feck up by Bioware is going to back lash at them like no tomorrow!
They either have to come up with a quick resolution to bring the HighRes option back in the game, or they gonna loose a lot of subs over this.
Lots of people are pissed (and rightfully so, as the statement posted today is downright insult to our inteligence) and won't let this just go and forget about it.

Actually, movie watching is very relevant to this game.

You are correct, he already corrected it, as because during Beta there was no difference between cutscenes and normal gameplay.
Here is his new post with more actual gameplay screenshots from beta. It just makes me sad the more I see this /sigh :
Again that first image was from a cut scene but there was no difference between the textures in game or on cut scenes during BETA. Below are in-game shots:

So, what I understand is they might think about making the high texture pack available again?
I reckon it'll take a long time if they felt the problem was serious enough to necessitate taking them out.... I doubt I'll be there to see it, but in my opinion they should go for it, because even the best usable textures in game right now are just really weak. And the game's character models are not stylized enough to get away with it (like, say, WOW does).

Same as the missing HighRes environmental textures in DC Universe Online. SOE promissed to put them back in too. Never happened. DCUO went F2P just 9 months after release.
The thing here is, that this whole High Res texture debacle and how they are handling it, couldn't have come at a worse moment for EA/Bioware, just before the free month runs out.

While I think some people go a bit far in defending this as a "non-issue" (really? cutting corners for as long as your customers don't notice is an issue to me), I'm not as concerned about the graphics as I am about EA's bad reputation. I don't care whether my character looks detailed during combat, but this whole thing still gets to me a little, and is further evidence of why I'd rather not deal with Bioware's sugar mama. It won't impact how long I play the game probably, but that doesn't make it right.
