This thread is full of comeplete misinformation. There was no high resolution textures during beta and the screenshots that have been thrown around and touted as normal in game ones are from cut scenes. Anyone who says the actual game looked like the cut scenes during closed beta is misinformed or downright lying.
Am I the only one that thinks this is a reasonable response by EA/Bioware? It is very clear to me what the situation is after reading that, and I personally feel better about the situation now.
Agreed. Unfortunately most people seem to think that whatever bothers them is the most important thing in the world and should be fixed two days before yesterday.
just read through the official forums threads this is a huge deal for a LOT fo people.. not just the lack of getting the high-res textures but how they are handling it...

Yup, you are absolutely right! We are all misinformed!
Hell, even Bioware is completely misinformed by admitting themselves that the high res textures were available during a period in Beta.
Whatever floats your boat man. Just like the over 4000 posts thread about this on the official forums is just our imagination as well.

The proof is in the pudding. Buy the game, see for yourself. Just wait til a trial or price drop so you don't lose out on your money.

Maybe in your beta your settings were on High? Or was it Medium then? (that's a joke, har har).
Also, someone said the only people who have to worry about SOPA are thieves. There's some actual misinformation right there.
Guys you really need to be looking at the majority of the people who are upset in this thread over the graphical changes, Teala, Paragus, etc...all people who had 0 interest in the game but are just using this as a platform to "rage" (as fake as it may be, because they dont like the game. Why dont you go review Darkfall again and say how good it is
(most of this is intended in pun, but bears a very high level of truth to it also )
i'm outraged about this yet still have a very large interest in the game as I play and will still subscribe.. need more evidence? I just wrote a guide here on page 1 about getting the most out of the games graphics. So no you can't lump everyone in that category on top of that just go to the link I posted above for the official forums and see how many outraged fanboys are raging about this.
and in full mod force aparantly...my post against some of the "stars" of these forums (ones who have no intention of ever playing this game got removed immediately).
The ones screaming loudest never wanted to play to begin with, and are just using it as a pedestal to try and discourage others from playing, cause their games they like flopped
You know what is so damn funny, Bioware was caught lying to their player base and many of them are so blinded by fandom that they do not even know they have been lied to.
Or maybe some people have much bigger priorities in life than a video game.
So the high-res textures aren't in the game. Boo hoo. CRY MOAR. If that's the worst thing that you ever have to deal with, then bully for you.
See perfect example. By the way, high res graphics were in game, during beta. That is why the UI had three settings, low, medium, high. Now Bioware comes out and says there never were any high res textures, which is a lie, and the UI showing the texture settings of low, medium and High should have only ever showed, low and high. They out right lied to you. They then tried to cover up their lie by removing the medium setting in the game UI and were going to say, "see high res textures are in game" - PTR screen shots be players showed where Bioware removed the medium setting in the UI.
It is not that they removed the high res textures from the game because the engine cannot handle it, it is that they tried to cover their arses by lying to you and every other player of the game. Some of you are so blinded by fandom that you don't even know you've been lied to.
Absurd. Simply absurd. What is this alleged lie supposed to cover up? That they decided the 'atlas textures' were better than the high res textures in terms of perfomance for gameplay outside of cinematics? No, that would be circular--making a lie that is exactly the same as the truth. Perhaps then you're suggesting they changed their mind at some point and didn't announce the change in a timely manner, and therein lies the deception? A bit disappointing, perhaps, but calling that a lie is at very least an exaggeration. The whole conspiracy theory as far as I can see (and I'll admit perhaps I've missed something) is completely incoherent.
So if you reread Stephen Reid's quote you'll see the words 'During development and testing of The Old Republic, our priorities were to ensure the game looked great and performed well. In testing, we discovered that using our 'maximum resolution' textures on in-game characters during normal gameplay could cause severe performance issues, even on powerful PCs. There were a variety of possible options to help improve performance, but one that was explored and ultimately implemented used what is known as a 'texture atlas'.'
Thus, contradicting your statement 'Bioware comes out and says there never were any high res textures'.
Am I missing anything here? I really can't undertand typing your final sentence, Teala: 'some of you are so blinded by fandom...' Just absolutely unneccesary.
Anything else this game ISNT going to have they want to tell us NOW instead of later under the excuse of trying to find a solution?
ever try sitting in game? you can sit :P, just type /sit
Maybe he meant in chairs? I know you can sit in your spaceship's chairs, but AFAIK, not in the MMORPG portion of the game. Sure, little things add to a game, but the first thing I check when I log in is not whether I can sit at a table.
Guys you really need to be looking at the majority of the people who are upset in this thread over the graphical changes, Teala, Paragus, etc...all people who had 0 interest in the game but are just using this as a platform to "rage" (as fake as it may be, because they dont like the game. well i did say most :P which also means not everyone
That screenshot is from a cinematic in-game. As stated, cinematic scenes use high resolution textures because we have control over how many characters are rendered on-screen at once. This is how the game was always intended to look in cinematics. We did not 'remove' high resolution textures - they were always in the game for use in cinematics.
With that said, thank you for all of your responses. We understand everyone's desires around this issue, and although it's not going to be an overnight fix, as mentioned we're working on addressing this. Many of the suggestions you have made are similar to potential changes the development team is investigating.
I rounded up the development team once more and had another discussion, and wanted to update you with a better timeline and some more precise details on what we're doing right now.
The first major changes will be in our next major Game Update, which will have the version number of 1.2. Those changes will bring greater visual fidelity to your character and those around you, but will still allow for good performance in situations where a lot of characters are on-screen at once. In other words, for those screenshots of your character in their best gear, you should see a marked improvement.
Other potential changes are being discussed right now as I said, many of which are similar to changes suggested by many of you. As usual, youll see these sorts of changes on our Public Test Server before they make it into the live game. Right now we cannot commit to a live date for the 1.2 Game Update, but it will be within Q1 2012.
It's good people reacted the way they have it's made a difference and kudos for them listening, they have realised it needs addressing sooner rather than later so it is being worked on.
Still think the UI bug was a laughable excuse but at least there is a result for those hanging around
Here's some in game screen shot's i just took of ny character. My system is 8 yrs old and i use a Nvidia GT 430 card, with a monitor res at 1360 X 768. I think it looks real good to be honest and once AA goes live, i don't see the problem.
Franklin was a punk who's reputation was built on lies and shyte he stole from other people. Granted he was smart, but no smarter than say anyone on this forum is. Actually, if he were still around today and was an mmo nerd he would be perfect for this forum. Fake profiles, trolling. Franklin was a TROLL!
Anyway, why would a company that cares about players release a game as an mmorpg (a game that takes considerable effort and time; which we like) only for it to instead be a soloesque game that takes 40 hours just like a single player game?
Why did they take out high res when it is obvious that they didn't have to? That excuse I can understand if EVERYONE had the same PC. Or if it was a console game online. That article makes me think they are planning on having this be some "work on netbooks," type of game. Like Conquer online is now comming out for Ipad2. Like, they are looking to the future? When Ipad or android type can play this game.
We understand the passion and desire for people to see the same textures you see in our cinematic scenes in the main game. Because of the performance issues that would cause for the client, that's not an immediate and easy fix; we need to ensure we're making choices that the majority of our players will be able to benefit from. Having 'atlassed textures' helps performance overall, and that's a very important goal for us.
Nope I just think people want the option for the game to not look like its 5 years old....
This has sealed it for me, its gradually being getting worse. I was waiting for the textures that don't make it look like console rubbish.
So I guess they are using the wrong engine, as other games seem to manage it...Ouch big hurdle to get over this one.
And yeah sounds like a cover to me too...
No kidding, look at Lord of the Rings Online, even though "certain" aspects of that games graphic engine are showing their age, over all the game on max settings blows SWtOR out of the water. A beautifully painted, alive game world that draws you in. SWtOR in comparsion comes off as dead and not vibrant. If Turbine can do that going on five years ago, Bioware should have been able to do a lot more
What gets me more and more is that Bioware's PR machine is really just that a full of crap PR machine. They keep stacking on more and more promises and yet I don't really see follow through yet. They need to shut up a bit on "what they are going to do" and just do more.

Recently for example in EQ2 they disabled support for Shader 3.0 to the detriment of the majority.
Why?
'cause a few people crashed in Velious with it enabled and $0E automatically assumes they know best.
(Instead of admiting their engine is a piece of shit.)
This is a perfect example of such behavior.
WE pay THEM - not the other way around.
Eat a dick, lazy developers and corporate shills.

They are just backtracking....
Sigh, high resolution textures will probably never be seen again ( they were in beta for a short time).
Bad news... As for the misleading thing, companies always show stuff that is
a. not at a supported resolution / detail ( or is never released that way)
b. never seen in game.
It is not new and is lame but its just the way it is...
How dissapointing
think he meant on chairs and at the bar at the cantina's and such...
